This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I just upgraded my ram, PSU, gpu, and cpu for the first time by myself and it posted the first try. I can’t believe how easy it actually was.

Finally have a “Gaming” PC and it has changed my entire view on gaming

    Posted: 03 May 2021 06:41 PM PDT

    Final Build!

I've spent years wanting a gaming PC. I've always been a gamer, but never understood why I should switch to PC from console. I live in a potato town and I literally dont know a single person who has a pc so I wasn't ever able to try it. My "gaming" pc was a prebuilt FX-6300, RX 580 (just upgraded to last year) 8GB RAM, and a 1TB HDD. New specs are:

    Ryzen 5 5600X

    1TB SSD

    500GB M.2

    4TB HDD

    GeForce RTX 3070

This has shown me why I should've switched years ago. Games play SO much better and smoother at 144 FPS+ than they do on console. I have both the PS5 and Series X and neither come close to what pc games feel like. I don't even want to turn on a console anymore. Lol I know the build isn't the best, and I'm gonna keep trying for a 3080, but for me this build is a beast!

I replaced my power supply all by myself!

    Posted: 03 May 2021 08:44 PM PDT

Had a prebuilt from a few years ago, and the power supply failed on me :(

The most I'd done before this was replacing/adding RAM or plugging in another hard drive. But I did it. I disconnected the right things, and I reconnected them the right way. And it booted first try! Genuinely proud of myself and wanted to share :)

Edit: Thanks for the kind words and replies! Just to answer some questions, the faulty psu was a thermaltake smart 600w. Upgraded to a fully modular Corsair RM750, so all the cables were replaced.

To the person who suggested to sell or trade our RX 5700 XT cards..

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:10 PM PDT

Thank you for the suggestion! When I read your post about how miners were willing to buy our cards for much higher value or even trade for newer better cards, I was like "no way!"

Got my RX 6800 XT yesterday with the money I made selling my RX 5700 XT and still have some change left and it's all thanks to you bud! Thank you for the advice!

    11600KF or 3700X for 3070 1440p 144hz?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 05:37 AM PDT

They are at similar price point, and I've got no idea which one to go for. Will be pairing it with RTX 3070 for 1440p 144hz gaming and programming. Which one do I go for?

They are bundled with a few parts from my local part center so I cannot modify them, otherwise I won't be able to buy it :(

It seems that the intel bundle has better cooling, but hey I'm not sure.

Need to upgrade my graphics card.

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:11 PM PDT

Hello, currently I have a 980 ti that has been experiencing lots of graphical issues even after I've made sure all of my drivers are up to date. I have had the computer running for at least ten hours a day for the past four years and I think its just run its course. I recently got an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, G.Skill 16GB (2 x 8GB), and GIGABYTE B450 AORUS M put into my computer. I don't know if this makes any difference for what I need but my friend recommended I get the NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3070. I know they're scarce right now so I'm not buying one but I wanted to know if I should wait and be on the look out for one of these or if I should try to get a different card. If I am getting the 3070 should I go with the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 EAGLE 8G because it has more fans? I think an issue that lead to the failure of my graphics card was over heating so maybe this would help? Thanks for any advice!

What determines processing speed? I'm incredibly confused!

    Posted: 04 May 2021 09:54 AM PDT

I need a computer for work, and my boss (who is financing this) doesn't want me to spend time building it from scratch. Regardless of what I buy I plan on upgrading its RAM, and other components, as necessary (we probably want to do 64 GB RAM). But I want to get something that we can use right away for our applications (EPhys analysis on Matlab and image processing). However, as I've been shopping around, I've become incredibly confused as to what processing speed is and what determines it.

I've seen desktops with i3 processors and 8 GB of ram being advertised with 3.5 GHz processing speeds, and desktops with i9 processsors and 16 GB of ram being advertised with 3.1 GHz processing speeds. WHAT???

Please help me understand what is contributing to processor speed, and how important it is for the purposes of running MATLAB codes on big data sets.

Here are some links to the computers I was looking at, for context

    1. Dell OptiPlex 3080 (i3, 8 GB RAM, 3.6 GHz)
    2. Lenovo ThinkStation P520 (Xeon, 8 GB RAM, 3.6 GHz)
    3. Lenova ThinkStation P330 (i9, 16 GB RAM, 3.1 GHZ)

Everybody agrees you should get a UPS for your rig, but I have no clue what I'm looking for.

    Posted: 04 May 2021 09:46 AM PDT

All I know is that pure sine wave delivery is the best. But some models list a wattage, some have a number in VA (ie 900 VA). How important is having a replaceable battery? How many joules of surge protection should I look for? I spent a lot of time researching my PC and got some good deals on great hardware, but I'm having a harder time understanding what matters with UPS backups.

Could you fit 140mm fans on the side of Lian li 011DXL

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:51 PM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/q4LkgdA.jpg

So I know in the specifications of this case that the side is compatible with 120mm fans only. However, the slits as shown in the picture seems like it might be possible so I was wondering if anyone has tried 140mm fans? I would try myself but I don't own any.

    Help building 3080 pc

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:19 PM PDT

    Hey,

I'm planning to build a new PC, my current one is around 10 years old and running an HD 5850. The new one will mostly be used for 1440p 165Hz gaming.

I have a couple of concerns about the parts:

    1. Is the ryzen 7 an overkill?

As far as I know most people recommend ryzen 5 for gaming, however I want to use the new PC for another 10 years

    1. Will the case be large enough?

I would like decent cooling and I figured Noctua would be best, but the case would be quite cramped. I found these 2 builds on PCPartPicker and everything seems to fit, but I'm still worried the crammed space will affect cooling. Build 1, Build 2

    1. The RAM clearance is a bit tight.

Noctua lists that the maximum RAM height without moving the fans is 32mm, the RAM I choose is 34mm high but I saw someone else was able to make it work.

    1. Price

Is the SSD I chose overkill? Are there cheaper parts that would do just as well to save me some cash?

    1. Cooling

Ive always heard Noctua is best, and I am 100% sticking to air cooling. The case I had can fit 2 140mm fans on the front (or 3 120mm), 2 140mm fans on top, and 1 120mm fan at the back. I figured the best would be 2 140mm intake at the front, 2 140mm exhaust on top, and 1 120mm exhaust at the back. The only problem is what brand and model of fans should I use?

    Silent wings 3 (140mm). Normal or high-speed?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 12:08 PM PDT

Im looking to replace the noctua A14 fans in my case since they seem to cause a rythmic like resonance in my case. After finding others mentioning they had similar issues with those fans and the case I have (fractal design meshify c), some suggested silent wings 3 did not create this noise.

For two in the front of the case, would I be better off with the normal 1000rpm fans or the high speed 1600rpm fans?

Need some assistance finding a new chair for my old back. WFH 8+ hours daily w/ schooling adding another 4-6 hours... and I game as well. Need something reliable, comfy, and supportive.

    Posted: 04 May 2021 12:07 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I am in need of some advice and guidance regarding office chairs. I am currently working from home 40-50 hours a week whilst attending school online as well. So basically, I am sitting in a chair in front of my PC for at least 12 hours daily; even some weekends because of gaming. I have a pretty strict budget and would like to stay < $500 USD. I have done lots of research, honestly, but the reviews on things are all over the place. Especially on chairs. I am needing something that has a tilt lock and lumbar support. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

So far I have looked at used Herman Miller Aeron chairs, secretlab, la-z-boy executives, and some Amazon stuff. I am just really needing to get out of my $100 amazon chair before my back goes completely dead, lol.

Upgrading from Ryzen 1600x to 5600x

    Posted: 04 May 2021 11:43 AM PDT

Going to be upgrading my build to a 5600x. I have a mini ITX tower and a b350 motherboard so going to need to get a new motherboard. What's your recommendations? I know I'll need a B550, A520, or x570 mini itx board. Looking at what's available on NewEgg. Might need to get a separate fan depending on motherboard. My existing parts are:

    16gb ddr4 3000 Corsair Vengeance LPX

    Gtx 1070 ti ftw V2

Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ITX Series White

Friend's selling me his old build

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:47 PM PDT

    Hey all,

A friend is selling me his old build, but I'm completely oblivious of computer prices. Another friend suggested me to ask here. He is asking for $600 for a i7-7700k, 16gb ram, nvidia 1080 fe, 256gb samsung 960 in a small case. Is that worth it?

    Thanks!

Edit: Thanks for answering! I'm gonna buy it.

Can I Put New Wires In This PSU

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:17 PM PDT

So I got this prebuild a year ago. Its the cyberpower pc with a 580 and a ryzen 5 3600. It has been glitching and I found out it is graphic issues. I plugged the pci cable in and out a few times but it didnt fix it. I thought maybe it was plugged good in the psu. I went to check the psu and found out that the cables go inside the box, which there are no screws to open. So all im asking is is there a way to open it. The psu is a Apevia ATXPR600W

I'm buying this used PC. Seems like a good deal. What do I look for to ensure I'm not getting a problematic build?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 01:03 PM PDT

The seller said it was built in March 2020 for gaming. Last thermal paste change and dust cleaning was this January and it hasn't been used since March 2021.

The asking price is $2200. Estimated original cost is $3335 (I made a parts list of the specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kNgcsX )

    Specs:

    GPU: ASUS ROG 2080ti

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900x

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600mhz 4x8gb

    PSU: ASUS Thor 850w platinum

    SSD: Corsair mp600 2tb

Cooler: NZXT x53 240mm AIO water cooler

    Motherboard: gigabyte x570 arous master

Case: lian li lancool 2 mesh rgb

To me it seems like a good deal but I've never bought a used PC before so I'm not sure what I should be looking for. Any tips are appreciated :)

Building a Gaming/Workstation PC for a friend who doesn't mind to pay extra for Aesthetics. Could I have some final input?

    Posted: 04 May 2021 12:46 PM PDT

Hey! I normally help many others on this sub, but would like some final input before ordering this PC for a friend. He already has his old GTX1070, and will upgrade probably next year when things quiet down. He will be using it for Blender and animation professionally, and for gaming (most main-stream games).

He doesn't mind paying extra for aesthetics, but I kept making sure he at least knew the cheaper (to me more reasonable) part options.
