This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

So basically the 10850k is the better option here right?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 06:52 AM PDT

if 10850k+z490 is $80 cheaper than 5800x+b550+wifi card+gt710 Its basically a no brainer to choose the first option right? Like I don't think the 5800x's singe core is worth the extra money.

Cos the z490 tuf gaming has wifi and i won't need to buy an extra gpu for the display.

Is it still worth building a Gaming PC given the current cost of components?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 06:34 AM PDT

So I have pretty much planned my PC build, with cost coming to around or just under £2000. (I shall list my build at the bottom)

Is it worth building one when alien ware and other brands could save me a couple hundred pounds?

I'm new to this so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    My intended build:

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 5800x -£420

Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON WIFI AM4- £200

Graphics Card: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB Gaming OC - £470

RAM: Corsair Vengeance pro RGB DDR4 3600 MHz PC - £180

    Hard drive: WD Red 3.5" 4TB - £120

    Power: Corsair TX750M Semi-Modular ATX PSU - £80

Fans: NZXT Kraken X53 240 mm Liquid CPU - £95

Edit: wow I got a lot more replies than I thought. Thank you to everyone that commented, there's a lot of different opinions and options for me to take. The insight and knowledge shared has been really helpful. I hope stocks for graphics cards will be sorted soon and I can see how the prices are. All the prices for my build were Curry's/PC World here in England.

Yeah SSD over HDD, definitely going down that route.

Thank you again everyone. Any more advice please keep commenting. I have a lot to learn!

So my pc got a virus, i can easily change my drive, are my other parts safe?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 04:59 AM PDT

Basically yesterday my pc got a virus (my family also uses it and you know what happens...) I have another ssd floating around and was thinking of just replacing the infected drive and make a fresh install of windows on the spare drive (which was not connected to the pc, so it's safe). I was wondering if my other parts can be affected by the virus or am I safe by just replacing the drive

If you need more info i can try to answer, just know that I'm not a really techy guy...

Hello r/buildapc! I'm going to build a pc in the Antec p120 crystal and i need a pcie 16x riser cable. How long does it have to be? I use an ATX-motherboard. Cheers!

Thank you to everyone that helped me complete my first PC build!(It performs much better than my 6 year old Xbox One)

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:11 AM PDT

As the title says, Thank you:) Thank you to everyone that helped me make educated purchases for my first build. I now feel like I can pass on general knowledge to other PC noobs like myself, which is a big reason why I love this subreddit. Now to my build, it works great for all my games, and I would like to think I am getting pretty decent at keyboard and mouse. It isn't the sexiest build visually, but I am pretty satisfied with it(I know I could cable manage better). I'm also still looking for a better color theme so let me know if you have any ideas:)

I got extremely lucky and was able to snag myself a 3000 series card, and I hope this can give some hope to others. I used a google extension called octoshop which notifies a drop, then I just spammed add to cart. Again I got lucky, but I hope this gives some hope to those trying to get a card without selling their soul.

    Again thank you

RTX 3060 vs RX 6700 XT

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 07:37 AM PDT

I'm currently building a PC for some 1080p/1440p gaming. I can get hold of a 3060 (non ti) or a 6700 XT. I have the 3060 in my build but a 6700 XT has become available for £97 more. Is it worth getting 6700 XT or sticking with 3060.

    Current build specs as follows:-

CORSAIR iCUE 5000X RGB MID TOWER GAMING CASE

    AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Six Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.6GHz/35MB CACHE/AM4)

    ASUS® STRIX B550-F GAMING (DDR4, USB 3.2, 6Gb/s)

    16GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3600MHz (2 x 8GB)

    12GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3060

    2TB CORSAIR MP400 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (up to 3480 MB/R, 3000 MB/W)

CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET

Corsair H115i ELITE CAPELLIX RGB Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler

Taking a step from prebuilt to building myself, can I salvage anything from my prebuilt?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 01:29 PM PDT

    Prebuilt: HP Pavilion 580-023w

I've only ever added a 232 GB SSD and I may have maxed that out even though I feel like I have many less games now than I had before. I had a list of recommendations people had given me previously but...lost it lol so this is my way of documenting it. Personally I like the idea of slowly making upgrades if that's an option but if my best move is to take minimal and upgrade most of it, then I'd much prefer that. Any recommendations are welcome!

Budget ATX case with easy dust cleaning and acceptable airflow & built quality

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 01:40 PM PDT

Hi guys, I've just spent maybe 3 hours today desperately searching for the ATX case that is under 80€, has easy dust cleaning and is not pure crap. And is available on European market.

I imagine dust cleaning as simple as I have at my Zalman R1 case (not available anymore), using the front door panel you access detachable dust filter, which you can straight up shower. You need 2 moves with 1 finger to detach the filter. There is a dust filter at the bottom of the case which is also easily detachable and washable.

I just haven't found anything that matches these criteria. I did find the Q500L but watching the review of it made me avoid it. They said that it is very crap quality and also a tight squeeze for an ATX MB.

    Do you have any suggestions?

If possible I would prefer to have the slot for DVD burner.

Rant: Also did every producer just straight up lost its mind? There is so little attention paid to this, but so much on having glass panels, as much rainbow lighting and 10 fans spinning in every direction essentially creating a colorful tornado of dust inside. If you would detach the front panel more than 5 times there's no chance you wouldn't break it. And why do we still not have a chimney based cases where you would have a clear one direction(\giggle*) of airflow and would use a chimney effect that would provide you amazing draft with far less effort required from fans?*

    Budget gaming PC advice request

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:44 AM PDT

I'm looking at building a budget rig to run non-AAA games. Some older stuff like the Total War series, Crusader Kings 3, Fallout 76, World of Warcraft, Civilization 6 is what I expect it to run. Playing at maxed settings is not a priority for me. I priced out some parts and built around the idea that I will not be getting a GPU anytime soon. Also, I am more interested in value than aesthetics.

    • Intel Core i5-10400 2.9 GHz 6-Core Processor - $150
    • ASRock H410M-HDV/M.2 Micro ATX LGA1200 Motherboard - $130
    • PNY CS900 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive - $53
    • Kingston ValueRAM 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR4-2666 CL19 Memory x 2 - $35 each - $70
    • Zalman S2 ATX Mid Tower Case - $50
    • Corsair CV 450 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply - $45

Puts me in at around $500. I originally intended to go with an AMD processor but those things are pricey right now. Please criticize.

The pc does not produce a picture and the beeper remains silent

    • 500GB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 32Gb/s 3D-NAND TLC (MZ-V7E500BW)
    • AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 8x 3.90GHz So.AM4 BOX

    • 650 Watt be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 11 Platinum 80+
    • nvidia geforce rtx 2060 super

    #####################################################################

I have already ruled out all other sources of error:

    1. - Replaced power supply
    2. - Graphics card replaced
    3. - Monitor works with other computers
    4. - All cables readjusted and replaced
    5. - Mainboard replaced
    6. - RAM replaced
    7. - Mainboard BIOS updated
    8. - Mainboard CMOS reset

    #####################################################################

    Problem remains:

Still no picture (not even the bios is shown to me). Still no sound from the beeper.

Now only the CPU should remain as the source of the error. But I don't understand why it should suddenly stop working after 2 months of error-free use.

Any ideas what else it could be?

Motherboard box opened and security tape already cut.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 05:40 AM PDT

Hey all. I need some advice. I just received my motherboard and the packaging was really bad. The box had been opened and the tape on the motherboard bag has been cut. Its an MSI board that came in a Corsair outer box as well. This is supposed to be a new product. I have no means of testing if it works because I don't have all the parts yet. I'm super stressed cause it took like 3 months to save for this board and I'm not sure if its 2nd hand damaged. Do I accept that its been opened or return it?

My PC vs PS5 for Resident Evil Village

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 12:26 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I was wondering if I could pick your brains about something that's been bugging me.

Basically, I bought a PS5 just so I could play the upcoming Resident Evil game in the best possible way but I'm wondering if my PC will perform better and i just wasted my money

(which is entirely possible because I bought a prebuilt on the suggestion of my friend who knows way more about PC's than me lol)

My GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER and my CPU is AMD Ryzen 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.59 GHz

Thank you for any help at all whatsoever in advance!

    Need Suggestions for PSU Upgrade...

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:36 PM PDT

My current PSU is an EVGA 750W N1...

    I know, not that good.

    My build is listed below:

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
    • GPU: RX 580
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x 8gb DDR4

When I first built this PC, I got my step-brother to give me his list of parts so I could just copy him - essentially trying to avoid doing my own homework. Now that I know just how bad the n1 series can be, I feel lucky that mine has lasted for one year, but I still want to "upgrade" to a better PSU, preferably no more than 700W. I blame him for my past ignorance - my mistakes are clearly his fault. (Might be sarcasm.)

    Current issues with PSU:

    • Performance has been fine, but the fan has rattled from day one, and I really do not want to disassemble a PSU to fix it.
    • Other than that, my only gripe is that these PSUs carry poor reputations, so having this PSU in my PC with the knowledge of other, wiser men has made me question the stability of my machine.

I've been eyeing some PSUs, but I wanted to take my questions to this cesspit of nerds: What PSU should I get?

Motherboard giving VGA issue with GPU powered on

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:30 PM PDT

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix b450-f gaming

    GPU: ASUS - NVIDIA GeForce TUF-RTX3070 8GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0

    RAM: 4x G.Skill Trident Z 8gb ddr4

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600

    PSU: Corsair CS-M Series CS850M 850w 80 plus gold

    Local drive: Samsung 1tb SSD

    Media drive: Seagate 1tb HDD

I finally got my hands on a 30 series gpu and was able to swap out my ancient 970. After swapping the card's out I went to boot my pc and was receiving no signal from my gpu. I went to check inside my case and there was a white led glowing on my board.

After looking it up, the led indicates that I have a VGA issue. I rechecked my GPU to make sure it's seated properly and checked the wires but the gpu is powered on with its rgb going and all fans running.

For reference everything in the case minus the cables and psu are less than a year old, and right before swapping the gpu in everything was running fine. I just can't figure out what is causing the issue

Testing an EVGA PSU with Auto-Eco Mode

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 02:25 PM PDT

No help needed here; just posting this for the record in case someone is on the internet looking for an answer like I was an hour ago. Maybe the answer is obvious, but I'm new to this all, and it wasn't obvious to me.

Some EVGA PSUs are equipped with a feature called "Auto-Eco Mode" whereby the fan will only activate if the PSU gets hot enough. This is distinct from other EVGA PSUs with (manual) Eco Mode, which have a switch to manually enable or disable Eco Mode.

When running a paperclip/self test an EVGA PSU with Auto-Eco, you should expect the fan to start briefly, then stop.

I confirmed this with EVGA support over the phone. For some reason, this isn't explained in the PSU manual or on EVGA's website (that I could find).

How much changing thermal paste in gpu actually improved temps

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 10:29 AM PDT

I have a Gtx 1660ti phoenix and it always ran @ 83-86C under load and i thought it wasnt worth cleaning since the temps were probably high due to the small cooler.

Was cleaning my pc today and decided to fully clean my gpu and change its thermal paste.

Was getting a steady 75C in Heaven 4.0 where i got 86 last week when i tested after upgrading CPU

Hello brilliant people of buildapc, I got the same model of cpu cooler as I had in my last build and it runs way louder after a mobo upgrade - did I do something wrong in my upgrade?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:51 AM PDT

Hi all, I had a cooler master hyper 212 evo in my last build that I made 5 years ago and since I liked it I got another for my recent mobo / cpu / ram upgrade that I did yesterday. After finishing the upgrade the cpu fan runs way louder (usually around 1500-2000 RPM) and I'm not sure if its because cooler master changed fans in the last 5 years or if I screwed something else up in the build.

Temps are usually 50-70 C. on just chrome and few other apps open.

I did update my bios and the fan settings are normal there.

Low FPS in CSGO with higher end PC

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 11:50 AM PDT

Started a few days ago with no settings changed or updates that I'm aware of. All drivers are updated and I have every power setting set to maximum performance. CSGO settings are also on low as well. Was wondering if anyone had similar issues or a solution.

    Specs:

    CPU: i9-9900x

    GPU: RTX 2080

    Motherboard: ASUS Prime X299-Deluxe 2

    16GB of ram

Temps are fine and benchmarks were normal. FPS is constantly spiking to ~100 during comp matches. If anyone has any idea what is going on I'd really appreciate it.

New to PC building and trying to upgrade already built PC

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 01:39 PM PDT

    Hey guys,
8/9 years ago my cousin helped my built my PC (frankly speaking he did all the hard work as I was pretty young at that time). I wanted to upgrade two parts of this pc (CPU and replace HDD for SSD) but I believe that it's not as easy as buying just new CPU and replacing it. That is why I would like you guys to help me with finding the right parts for my pc or at least telling me whether the parts that I picked are ok or not.
    My current build:

    • CPU - Intel Core i7-2600
    • Motherboard - Asus P8P67 Rev 3.1
    • Graphics Card - GeForce GTX 1080 (was able to upgrade it some time ago)
    • SSD - Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB
    • HDD - Western Digital WD Green WD20EARX 2TB
    • RAM - 2 X Kingston HyperX 4GB
    • Power Supply - OCZ ZS 750W 80+
    • Case - Thermaltake Armor A90
    • Disc reader - LG Blu-Ray BH10LS38

I would like to replace some of the parts for this:

    • CPU - Intel Core i9-11900 (don't know if buying something like i9-9900 wouldn't be better price/value wise)
    • HDD -> SSD - Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 1TB

I know that my motherboard doesn't support this type of SSD so I know I need to replace my motherboard and RAM too. I was thinking about this:

    • Motherboard - MSI Z590-A Pro
    • RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB

I would also like to replace my case, because it seems to be breaking down (the front is loose). But I don't know if I should look for some specific cases or pick one at random (I'm completely green). Will my power supply be enough for the new PC? And do I need to replace something else too?

I would be very grateful for some advice/help. Thank you guys in advance and sorry if I made some mistakes with what I wrote (and also how I wrote, english is not my mother tongue). I tried my best to google this stuff and learn it.
