The ugly PC update you've all been waiting for

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 05:20 PM PDT

You may remember this post from a while back, where I asked for submissions for some ugly ass cases to gift to a friend with a full build inside. We looked through every single post, and collectively, the favorite idea amongst The Boys™ ended up being from u/fuddyduddyc , which was to get a bright vivid pink case and sticker bomb the shit out of it. It's finally (almost) finished!

Ignore/excuse my messy basement. Prepare the eye bleach! And yes, that fan is off center on purpose. It bothers me, and that makes me happy for him.

Unfortunately there's some bad news. We didn't end up getting a GPU. We had planned a ryzen 5 3600 and a 2060 super. We actually ended up with a 3700x, but the GPU we were after ended up not happening, as it had to go to another build (to someone who was waiting for their PC). Since this one is a surprise with no timeframe, and I had to pick one or the other, I decided to use that card in the other friend's PC, as I didn't want to keep him waiting for an undefined amount of time.

I'm in the middle of a total of five builds right now for friends of mine. Some of it I'm paying for myself, some of it I'm just doing the build, but I've got two at present that need GPUs, and unfortunately this is one of them. It may be a while before he ends up getting this, because I'm stretched pretty thin financially at the moment, so, disappointingly, I don't have the reaction video I wanted to do.

Anyway, we opted not to clear coat the stickers, so he can remove them if he wants to, but at the cost of an hour or two of scraping and frustration, and he'll still be left with a vivid pink case, and surprise ugly cable management when he takes the glass panel off! We also disconnected the front button that changes the lighting, so he's stuck with the terrible color cycling default preset.

Wanted to say thanks to the 1600+ comments I got on the last post. I didn't expect more than a couple dozen, and I can't wait to show him that thread when we eventually get it to him.

The case is MSI MPG Gungnir 110M.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I convinced a friend of mine to build his own PC, since I had already built one for me and it was the best decision I could have made. But building this PC has become a nightmare, specially for him, and I feel very guilty. We've already spent one entire month trying to figure out what is wrong, without success. Here's a description of the symptoms:

The first attempt at building the PC we saw that every time we booted it up, the POST was passed successfully (I knew this thanks to the EZ debug leds of the motherboard) and the monitor displayed the BIOS menu. But, after a random amount of time (which ranged from a couple of seconds to several minutes), the PC restarted. The case fans and the CPU cooler kept moving, but the EZ Debug leds cycled again (CPU -> DRAM -> VGA -> BOOT), the loading BIOS screen appeared on the monitor and after a couple of seconds the BIOS menu was displayed. This process was repeated indefinitely.

After trying to troubleshoot this problem (you can find more details in my older post: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/mfn78t/pc_keeps_restarting_after_successfully_passing/), we decided to replace the motherboard. Since we still had the same issue, we decided to replace the CPU.

With the new CPU, the PC is perfectly stable while in the BIOS menu. I can even set the XMP profile 2 (3600 MHz, 16-18-18-38) without crashes. Therefore, we thought that the nightmare was finally over. But it is not. Now the problem appears when trying to install Windows 10. When booting from the installation USB, the Windows 10 installation process starts but after some seconds a reboot happens. We sometimes just see the white dots moving in a circle, sometimes we get to the language selection screen, and once we got to the disk selection screen. After this reboot the installation process is attempted a couple more times, until the PC stays in a black screen indefinitely.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

After this new problem, we have tried everything again:

    1. We have updated the BIOS to the latest stable version (7C95vA5).

    2. BIOS settings have been set to default by clearing the CMOS battery. The RAM is left at stock speed (2666 MHz) and we have ensured that the Secure Boot option is disabled.

    3. We have used 5 different USB sticks, where 3 of them have been prepared with the Windows Media Creation Tool and 2 of them have been flashed using Rufus (with GPT partition scheme and NTFS file system, which are set by default). We have also tried every single USB port of the PC (both the ones of the motherboard and the ones of the front panel). We have tried both to set the usb stick as the first boot priority and to use the one time boot menu (accessed by pressing F11 while powering on the PC). None of this combinations work.

    4. We have checked that all cables are connected properly, specially the 24-pin one (ATX_PWR1) and the 8-pin one (CPU_PWR1).

    5. In order to see if the problem was the RAM, we first tried to install just one stick on slot DIMMA2 (same issues), and then the other stick too. Since the problem still persisted, we tried another pair of RAM sticks that work perfectly fine on another computer with a Ryzen 5 2600X. Same issues.

    6. CPU idles at a temperature of 37ºC, which seems to be okay. The thermal paste has been used adequately. Even then, in order to see if the problem was the CPU (although we had already replaced it), we tried another one (a Ryzen 5 2600X) that works perfectly fine on another computer. With this new CPU the reboots happen while being in the BIOS, just as it happened before asking for a RMA and replacing the Ryzen 5 3600 with a new one. EDIT: This test is meaningless, since Ryzen 2000 series is not supported on our motherboard. So the CPU could still be the source of the problem. Thanks to /u/Tevans75 for the correction.

    7. Since the Ryzen 5 2600X has a VCore of around 100 mV higher, we thought that it might be related to some power issue. In order to see if the problem was the PSU, we tried my PSU (Corsarir RM650x). But with my PSU, his PC doesn't boot. The CPU EZ Debug led stays on, as if the CPU wasn't detected properly. We checked the cables again, and they were connected properly.

    8. As a last measure option, we tried to connect his PC to the power outlets of my house, just to check if it was some kind of electrical problem. With his PSU we had the same problem as always (while trying to install Windows 10 the PC rebooted automatically), and with my PSU the PC did not boot.

So we're basically desperate, since we've tried virtually everything. So we're considering giving up, though I wouldn't like to. Is there anyone out there that knows how to solve this problem?

UPDATE: This afternoon I have tried several new things to test if the problem was the SSD, as suggested in the comments:

    1. First of all, I've installed Windows 10 on an external 64 Gb pen drive using the "Windows To Go" tool of Rufus on my PC. After a successful installation, we've disconnected the SSD from the problematic PC and plugged the pen drive. But we have not been able to boot into its Windows installation correctly, the PC has rebooted a couple of times until a Recovery blue screen has been shown in the screen. On my PC the pen drive worked fine (although it's very very slow).

    2. We have tried to install a Linux OS, just in case the problem was related to Windows 10. Same issues.

    3. Finally, we have connected the new SSD into my PC, where I have been able to use it without any issue. I have been able to format it successfully. After disconnecting every drive of my PC except the new SSD, I have been able to install Windows 10 successfully (without internet connection to avoid any automatic software installation). Once the installation ended, I was able to boot into Windows without problems. So then we tried to move the SSD to the problematic PC. It reboots as soon as it tries to boot into Windows (we just have been able to see the Windows lock screen during a fraction of a second).

So to me it seems as if the SSD is not the problem either. I have checked the BOOT settings of the BIOS and everything seems fine. Any other suggestion?

    32 or 64gb ram?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 10:56 AM PDT

My workload is going to be pretty ram heavy, I think; I'm going to be editing short 8k video clips, gaming over VFIO, and running a few docker containers and databases, maybe some other virtual machines.

Would 32gb be enough for that? Or should I do 64? I really don't have anything to compare it to, as I can't really do any of these effectively on my current 8gb system.

I also unfortunately can't do 32 and upgrade later, as it's an ITX build and I only have two DIMM slots.

Replaced GPU thermal paste - BIG SUCCESS

    Posted: 04 Apr 2021 05:07 PM PDT

A couple months ago I bought a 2nd hand 1080 from r/hardwareswap for my first build. The whole time I used it, it would run between 80-90C, even under 30% load.

I messed with the fan curve, Googled over and over and over about what to do. I only really play Valorant, and a 1080 can shart out 200 fps on that even at 90C no problem. However I was getting worried continuing to run constantly at those temps under light load.

I didn't think my airflow was bad because my CPU would be around 50C no matter what. But I took my side panel off to make sure, and still the same temps.

Even though this was my first build, I decided to try replacing the thermal paste as it seemed simple enough(thanks Jay and Linus!). So I opened her up and that girl was CRUUUUUSTY. Cleaned it up, put a fat glob of kryonaut on there, and sealed er back up.

I just finished running Heaven on High for a good while, and it never went past 60C, the whole time at 78-99% utilization and a really high framerate(not to mention silent!).

I've seen a lot of talk debating the merits of this, and so just wanted to share my experience. It wasn't a hard process by any means and I'm excited about the new headroom I have!

Tl;dr: changed out thermal paste on second hand 1080, got 30-50C reduction in GPU temps.

Built my first PC, now I’ve got the itch..

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 12:31 PM PDT

I was really into pc games as a kid and a teen, but only ended up making simple modifications to prebuilt computers back in the day (shout outs to my old school packard bell and compaq PC's!).

Since then I've been a big console gamer and I love my Ps5, but I got the itch to build a pc and really enjoyed it. If curious re: my build, here it is: https://i.imgur.com/GQPZoVB.jpg

Now that I've finished my build, I'm a bit....bored. I've been downloading and playing a few games which has been fun, but honestly I enjoyed the building process a lot more!

Now I want to know - what else can I do? I have no need for another pc but I'm almost tempted to build another just for fun (though getting a decently priced GPU seems impossible right now). Or are there other modifications I can make to my existing machine that would be fun to do?

I've got the pc building itch now, and I'm looking for recos on what to do next!

About to just order a Pre-Built....

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 10:35 AM PDT

So I've been looking into building my own rig for about 5-6 months. While I'm fairly new to PC building, I have done enough research to know that graphics cards are in extremely high demand and are being re-sold for double and almost triple market value. After about 2 months of searching FB Marketplace, New Egg, and even some discord servers, I am giving up hope of ever being able to complete my dream build.

I was wondering what some of you geniuses think of pre built rigs? I would really like to be able to build my own and know my components inside and out, but I don't want to be searching the market for another 3-4 months when I could just get a new console in that time frame.

I guess I'm really just trying to see what you guys think. Is it a good idea? Bad idea? Any where in particular I should be looking?

Any advice or comments are appreciated!! Even if it's constructive criticism it's better than being lost in PC Limbo!! Thanks!

    i9 10900k or i9 11900k?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 05:41 AM PDT

So, a friend of mine wants to upgrade his PC, so I'm selling him my i9 9900k with my mainboard. It's an delidded i9 which can hit 5.1GHz. Now, I want to upgrade to either the i9 10900k or the i9 11900k. I'm more on the 10900k side, since a Z490 board would be cheaper and I heard overclocking it to at least 5.2GHz is more likely. The 11900k is more expensive and the boards too, and overclocking seems to be tricky as well. So getting at least 5.1GHz there is also not that easy.

My goal is to push as many FPS as possible on 1080p with my RTX 3090.

What do you guys think would be the better move in my case here? 10900k or 11900k?

(And no, I don't want to use any AMD CPU, thx!)

Need guidance for creating a budget friendly streaming PC

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:15 AM PDT

Hi all, so I've been thinking about trying my hand at streaming this summer and I need some help. My current PC (i3-9100f, GTX 1660 SUPER) is capable of running most games at over 100fps, but i'd like to invest in a budget friendly streaming PC for the encoding. I don't need anything crazy, I'd purely use this second pc for streaming. Does anyone here have any ideas? Also, i know the 9100f is shit so I plan to upgrade that to at least a 6 core processor soon. Would repurposing that for streaming potentially be a good idea?

    GPU prices increasing real quick

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 02:10 AM PDT

So I've been planning on working my first build. Done purchasing all the parts - yeah, 800 bucks for a 3060. During this time, I was also checking out others and found out here in my country, Philippines, 3060's are $800-850 while 3070's in the $1200-1300.

Now just after about some 2 or 3 days, 3060's are being sold at $900-1000 and 3070's in $1400-1500. It's as if the scalpers and retailers are both coordinated and united in upping the prices.

Anyway, just thought to report this as in my country at least, it's really not getting any better. So if you're "waiting", I think it's going to be quite a while.

I mean it's just insane to see such a price leap just after a few days - very few days. Talk about crazy.

Edit: Last prices I've checked were yesterday. And now, 3070's are about $1500-1600 already.

Need some help looking for a monitor that's a good middle ground for gaming and content creation

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 01:21 PM PDT

To give some context, I previously had a two monitor set up, one is a drawing tablet monitor (XP-Pen 22e pro) and the other was an LG TV monitor (I think 21 inches). The TV monitor was also connected to my PS4 set up.

Recently, my TV monitor from my two monitor set up died and I'm now in the market for buying a new monitor that serves as a good middle ground between content creation and gaming. I'm a computer graphics student, so I work with a lot of software like Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush, Substance Painter, etc. I do play PC and PS4 games on the side, but I'm not a hardcore gamer.

I'm looking from something that would be a good middle ground for both needs that would be within the $100-$200 range. I'm looking for something with accurate colors and a good refresh rate that's suitable for gaming, but if I had to compromise, I would prefer something with high color accuracy.

(I did find out about the ASUS ProArt Display PA248QV 24" that seems like a good option for the content creation side of it, but I don't really know how the PS4 games will do because of the refresh rate.)

    Thank you!

    Pc prebuilt help

    Noob here, need help

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 12:35 PM PDT

Ok, so I just upgraded my PC and I can't get video output from my GPU. I upgraded my mobo from a B360M (LGA 1151) to a A520M (AM4). I also upgraded from a i3 9100F to a R5 5600X, but all the other parts are the same.

I know the gpu should work because it's the exact same GPU I was using in my i3 build. I have already built my current PC from the ground up 5 times to make sure I have all the pins and connections right, and I still get no video.

    Things I've tried:

Reinstall every single piece in my PC 5 times.

    Change RAM channel.

Use only 1 stick of RAM instead of 2.

Check if my CPU is mounted correctly

Change input between HDMI and DP-1/DP-2

Carry a fucking TV from my living room to my bedroom so I can test if it responds different from my monitor

Any ideas of what my problem could be? My GPU fan is not spinning, and at first I thought it could be indicative of something, but now idk. I have a RX 580 MSI, if it matters. My cooler fan spins like normal and all my case LEDs light up

    First build - HELP!

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 10:24 AM PDT

Hi all, thanks in advance for your help. Please feel free to pick me apart

I managed to get my hands on a EVGA RTX 3060, still hoping to run across a 3070 or 3060ti before the bots, so I would like this build to be pretty future proof - whether it's for a 3070 or anything that may come out in the next few years.

This build will be used strictly for gaming - I'd like the option to stream but I am not a streamer nor do I really believe I ever will be but I like to stream Tarkov for a few buddies to watch that are stuck on console. Pity them

That being said, Escape from Tarkov is the primary game that will be played but I do want to make this my primary machine so of course, I'd like to run any game smoothly. My target is 1440p at 120fps - is this even possible with the 3060? I'd like to be able to overclock as well.

So with 1440p in mind, at the highest FPS possible please consider the following build and let me know if I'm setting my target a bit high for the 3060 or not. I'd like to know more about the TUF Gaming MOBO I plan on picking, seems to have everything I need as far as overclocking and front USB C header but is it a decent board? Also looking into Ryzen with a B550-F ROG Strix Board - they're both comparable in price but I'd have to make the ultimate decision of red vs blue. It seems like Blue team has better benchmarks for strictly gaming?

Any and all insight on 10-10700k vs a 5600X or even the 3700X is appreciated as well. All that being said, please pick this apart! Thank you

    CPU - Intel i7 - 10700K

    Cooler - Corsair H100i Elite 240mm Liquid

MOBO - ASUS TUF Gaming Z490-Plus (wifi)

RAM - Corsair Vengeance or Dominator at 16gb or 32gb - Let me know preference for Tarkov at 1440p!

    Storage - Samsun 970 Evo Plus - 1TB

    GPU - EVGA RTX 3060

    Case - Corsair 4000X

PSU - Cosair 750W 80+ Gold Fully Modular - Can I get away with 650 - even with OC in mind?

    Gaming laptop not worth it?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 04:11 AM PDT

So i have seen quite a few things on here about how the laptops would be more money in almost every instance, but honestly from what ive seen and want it seems i can find multiple laptops cheaper than the set up I got built on new egg (well all the components i chose) and they both have very similar specs if not the laptop has a few upgrades? Why is this? I tried to compare to other "basic gaming desktops" for reference and looked into a lot of specs and I cant seem to build what i want for as cheap as lets say a pretty good msi laptop. Why is this? Can anyone give me some tips or help? Looking for something that has 32gb ram and decent graphics card pricing up to around 2100 (as much under as i can but can go up to that) honestly im not the most tech savy when it comes to this stuff specifically like i know what the stuff is and does but havent built a pc and only have like super base knowledge of the components. Just know around what i need/want. Pls help im debating just getting another laptop and i wanted to make sure this was an okay choice or if i can actually get a desktop for a few hundred cheaper. (Laptop i found is about 1,700-1800) EDIT: the laptop in question is the: MSI GP75 Leopard 10SDK-469 17.3" 144 Hz IPS Intel Core i7 10th Gen 10750H (2.60 GHz) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 64 GB Memory 2 TB NVMe SSD Windows 10 Home 64-bit Gaming Laptop In I havent been able to mismatch and build something as good as this. Maybe im doing something wrong?

Blue screened, ok hit restart. artifacting and blue screen after boot, just before the login screen. flipped the bois switch on it, same thing. Boot to safe mode, uninstalled msi after burner and drivers, restart. Boots to login screen on normal boot but quickly artifacts and blue screens

Boot safe mode and reinstall drivers, does the same thing. So reset Windows and does the same thing right before the setup screen

Is my gpu dead, boots into safe mode but I'm guessing it's still dead

Is 400$ AUD good for a used 1080 on eBay? (No ti)

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:56 AM PDT

Upgrading from 1660. 1080 ti is a bit too expensive right now. The best I can do is 1080. Is 400 AUD good for this? Could I get a lot of that back from selling my 1660 on eBay afterwards? Thanks!

RTX 3070 MSI Suprim X vs RTX 3070 Gigabyte Aorus Master

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:49 AM PDT

It's highly possible that I will have a chance to purchase either of these two graphics cards, and I wanted to know which one is the better of the two. Would you pick the Suprim X or the Aorus Master if you were in my shoes? (Assuming price is around the same)

Help - HDD looks naked on one side

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 01:34 PM PDT

I salvaged an old 2.5" hard drive from a laptop. It looks like it's naked on one side with exposed board. Can I install it onto my drive cage as shown just like that? Or do I need to cover that exposed side with something? If so, what?

Questions about a 1st time NAS build

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 01:29 PM PDT

    Hi here,

First of all, I want to say that I am a total noob in everything server related. I always been using a lot of storage, mainly external, but I am tired of having my files spread between all of my HDDs, plus I have a second computer, so it's time to start using a better solution. I am not interested in pre-built NAS like Synology, the prices/specs of these devices aren't appealing to me. I want to build my own custom server and have absolute control on the hardware/power/heat/noise.

    - My actual setup (nothing fancy):

    2 computers - ps3 - old laptop - smartphone - tablet

    - What I want to use the NAS for:

File server only, no VMs, no plex (at least for now). I want to be able to listen to music, read ebooks and watch videos from any of my devices.

Since like I said before I am a total noob in network storage, I have a some remaining questions even after a lot of researches. I live in Morocco where electronics are expensive as hell (plus basically I have to import everything) so I want to be sure to do things correctly. I am apologizing in advance for every dumb question ^^. Please correct me if something is wrong.

    1 - Hardware:

Let's start with the hardware. ECC memory is a must have, I do care about my files. I also want to keep power consumption as low as possible. Finally, my budget is low so I want to spend it on the important stuff. After a lot of readings/videos, I have opted for something like this:

1.1 - CPU: Ryzen 3 3100 / 3300x / Ryzen 5 3600* (*too expensive here). These are all 65w, pack enough horse power for what I need and support ECC (all of Ryzen CPUs and Pro APUs support ECC). What do you think? Any reason to not go with the cheapest one?

I can also get the Ryzen 5 2600 for the same price as the 3100, it's also 65w, What do you think? Worth it or not? (Since Ryzen 2xxx wasn't as good as the 3xxx series).

1.2 - Motherboard: Some Asrock/Asus b550/x570 with listed support of ECC. Should I go for a board with a lot of SATA ports or get a PCI card? I have seen some cards in ebay, but they are at least 100 usd and I am concerned since it adds another possible component for failure.

1.3 - RAM: How much do I need? I have to find a good ECC sticks compatible with my motherboard, it's always possible to add more so I don't want to spend a lot here. For now I am considering a single 16gb stick, should I go with 8 instead? The prices aren't that different.

1.4 - Intel route: Another possibility is the i3 9100 + GIGABYTE C246-WU4 motherboard (10 sata ports). What do you think, compared to my first option?

1.5 - Case: This is the most troubling part. As I said before the options here in Morocco as basically inexistent, and importing a case is f*** expensive!! Something like $400 for shipping. I want a case with at least 10 HDDs, for now I can get:

    • COOLER MASTER MASTERCASE MC500P (10 x 3.5") for $200 (but I can find the additional HDD brackets anywhere).
    • COOLER MASTER COSMOS C700P (seems to support 12 x 3.5") for...$370 (+ $60 for importing 7 more brackets). the C700M costs $600 here haha what a joke (murdering the store owner is legit in this case or not? ^^)
    • BeQuiet Silent Base 802 (excellent case but supports only 7 x 3.5") for $280 (+ brackets)
    • Phanteks P600s (10 x 3.5") for $300 (+ brackets) - Not even sure if I still can get it.

Any idea here? Also concerned about the noise/temperature since it will be in my room.

1.6 - PSU: A 550W Gold is enough here right?

1.6 - GPU: Some cheap fanless one just for setup. I should get a motherboard that boot without a GPU right?

1.6 - Network: dumb question here. My router (ZTE F660) ethernet ports are 1GB, this is my absolute limit right? Or does adding a switch or any other device change something?

    2 - Software:

The eternal dilemma: Unraid vs Openmediavault vs Freenas...fight!

I am considering Unraid as my first option. A few things to say:

    • I have never used Linux.
    • I don't want to have all of my disks always spinning.
    • I have a lot of drives of different sizes, speeds and even form factors. I want to be able add/mix/replace drives easily, without configuring from scratch.
    • I am afraid of losing files and want a safe parity, even if everything will be still backed in my cloud.

From all of my researches Unraid seems to be the perfect system for me, but again I am a noob here so maybe I'm wrong. My plan is to start with the biggest parity disk I can afford and use all of my drives at first, then start adding new drive(s) every few months and hopefully replace the old ones. A few question:

    • Can I add parity disks anytime I want ?
    • Is my plan realistic (I mean is this possible with Unraid/other OS) ?

    3 - Storage :

Any recommendation/advice here? Concerned about noise/power/heat.

From what I have seen 10/12 tb 5400 rpm helium sealed drives seem to be the best bang for the buck right now, is that right?

Since I am in Morocco there will be no warranty when purchasing from US/EU, so I am planning on getting some WD 12TB elements and shucking them. What do you think? Especially concerned about quality/durability.

    Any advice will help.

    -----------------------

Finally done! Hope this was detailed enough and not too long! Thanks for reading.

Is there a white AIO with a temp display?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2021 01:24 PM PDT

Im building a white build atm and I really like how some AIOs can display the current CPU temp on their pump.

    For example:

Gigabyte's AORUS RGB AIO Liquid Cooler

    NZXT's Kraken Z53/63/73

    Asus ROG RYUO

    Asus ROG RYUJIN

The problem with those above is they are all black and do not have a white version of them available.

Am i missing some more unknown AIO which i just don't know of? Google did not show me any result for a white AIO with a display.

    Any help appreciated.

PS.: I know there are motherboards with a display that can show temps but switching out motherboards is out of question for me rn.

    1. The application requires 4GB of RAM and 1GB of free Hard Disk Space when running on Windows. In addition, an Intel Multi Processor (or later) is required. Adobe refers to its current offering as a "professional audio workstation" while urging customers to "create, mix, and design sound effects with the industry's greatest digital audio editing software."
