Some background of today's AMA experts

Matt Herman (Micro Center): His first computer was an Atari 800 which his father bought him when he was 12 years old. From that moment on, computers and technology has not only been his hobby, but also a driving force in his career. Matt has, over the last 20 years, built many PC's and uses these integrally with his Photo/Video hobbies, gaming, benchmarking, and he loves to take performance to the bleeding edge with water cooling and overclocking! He also likes to share his build and build progress with the community through build logs.

Tom Paazig (Micro Center): Director of Micro Center online. Tom originally started working for Micro Center 32 years ago at their original location in Columbus Ohio. Over his tenure, he has served in multiple roles including International Purchasing Manager and Brand Manager. In his current role, he oversees web development, A/B/MVT testing programs, Site Search and Product content. Tom has a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.

Johnnie Rodriques (Intel): I am a Technical Marketing Engineer for Enthusiast Desktop and have worked for Intel for over 20 years. I've had my own custom computer business and have been building custom PCs for myself, friends and Intel for the many years. Including custom cases, liquid cooling and overclocking. I'm been a pc gamer since I was a kid and am also into 3D printing and making custom props. My current rig is an i9-9900K/2070 Super and am have been working on a new custom PC for the last several months

Alejandro (Lex) Hoyos: I joined Intel Back in 2005 as an Analog Electrical Engineer working on SATA, PCIE and DMI interfaces for the PCH. Then in 2011 I move over to technical marketing and after "taking a wrong turn in Albuquerque" I ended up as a Tech Evangelist and Community manager. I spend most of 15 years at work building systems for gaming events, shows, friends and family and my Current gaming rig is a Core i9 10-900K with a 2080TI. You can find me Re-spawning a lot in CoD WarZone these days.

    The Microcenter.com Online Configurator:

    · An online resource that helps a customer select all the necessary components to build their perfect PC

    · User-friendly interface and algorithmically designed to automatically return ONLY compatible parts based on all previous selections

    · Returns real-time data on current pricing and inventory availability

For TIPS and TRICKS before building a PC

    · PURPOSE: Have an idea what the PCs primary usage will be. Gaming, video production, work from home, etc. Knowing this will give you an idea what critical components like the GPU, motherboard and CPU you will need.

    · COMPATIBILITY: ALWAYS make 100% certain your parts are all fully compatible with one another. Micro Center's online configurator is a perfect place to get this help at NO charge.

    · EDUCATION: There are literally thousands of videos on YouTube that provide complete walk-throughs on building a PC. Try searching "how to build a PC" and include a couple of the primary components in the search criteria like your Motherboard. You might be lucky and find a video where they are building almost the exact same PC as you.

    · THE CASE IS YOUR SPACE: Cases are usually a relatively low percentage of your build budget. Make sure to invest in one that gives you all off the room necessary to add the components you desire as well as one that will have space for all of the connectors you plan to include (HDMI, USB-C, etc)

    · EXPERT LEVEL NEEDS: Are you planning to overclock? Are you putting a high-power Graphics Processor in the system? These (and other) factors and others can affect your power supply needs, your cooling requirements and others (which again, takes us back to which CASE to use!)

    · WORKSPACE: It is always ideal to give yourself plenty of space to work with good lighting. Also important to ensure the workspace (and your hands) remain clean and static-free during assembly. Dirt and/or static electricity can damage or even destroy certain sensitive components.

    · IT TAKES A SOFT TOUCH: Remember to always go slow and be patient! These are sophisticated and delicate components that can easily become damaged if proper care isn't taken. Just ask someone who has bent the pins on their brand-new CPU!

Now it's time to bring your specific questions to the experts, Let's get started!

Is all core oc worth it for gaming?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:40 AM PDT

So I have 9900k and all I do is gaming. I know it auto boosts ti 4.7/5ghz single core in game. Or I can manually OC it to 5ghz on all 8 cores. Is there any benefit to that just for gaming or should I leave it at stock and let it boost on it's own?

I'm close to the point of giving up the quest to build a PC

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:57 AM PDT

I've been trying to build a pc for months, with the only eliminating factor being the GPU. I've been to Micro Center a few times early, waited in the line, watched the same guy (who is there Every. Single. Morning they told me. Scalper.) bug the hell out of the staff for a gpu. Because yea... he really needs another to scalp.

This is my first pc build, and it's kinda just like whatever at this point.

Basically.... I'm really considering just getting a pre-built, with a half decent gpu. I don't wanna go that route, but this is just ridiculous.

I'm being offered a gaming pc from a friend for $500 and am unsure if it meets my needs

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 07:16 PM PDT

Edit: I was not expecting so many responses, thank you! I'm quite computer illiterate and still learning what all these parts and components mean, so I appreciate the assistance. Sounds like my friend is giving me a deal that I can't pass up.

First if this is not the appropriate place to post, I apologize and feel free to direct me to the right place. My friend is offering me his old gaming computer for $500 (tower and razor chroma mouse/keyboard). I am trying to figure out if it meets requirements for iRacing with good quality and seeing all cars and tracks. My primary purpose would be for iRacing, with the potential for streaming. From my understanding of what's below I may want to increase the CPU (only meets minimum) and RAM (doesn't meet minimum), but am looking for a second opinion on if it would be a big undertaking for a novice builder like myself and worth it. I would want to run the recommended specs at least (as opposed to minimum). Thank you in advance!

    These are the Computer specs:

    Win10

    Intel i5-6600 3.3Ghz

    GeForce GTX 1660

    1 TB SSD 970 Evo+

    8GB RAM

    750 PSU

These are iRacing requirements (per website):

    Operating System-

    Minimum: Windows 8.1 64-Bit

    Recommended: Windows 10 64-Bit

    Processor (CPU)

    Minimum: 4 Cores

    Recommended: 6 Cores

    High End: 8+ Cores

    Memory (RAM)

    Minimum: 16GB

    Recommended: 16GB

    High End: 32+GB

    Graphics (GPU)

A gaming graphics card with dedicated memory (vRAM) is required.

    Minimum: 2GB Dedicated vRAM

    Recommended: 6GB Dedicated vRAM

    High End: 8+GB Dedicated vRAM

    Storage (Available HDD Space)

    Minimum: 25GB

Recommended: 50GB (For all cars and tracks)

Right now isn’t the time to build a PC!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:13 AM PDT

Hello friends! I just thought I would share my opinion here to help people who are just getting into PC gaming and eager to start their build.

While building a PC is a neat experience and something I recommend everyone interested in PC gaming do at least once, I don't believe it's the best course of action right now. I believe that if you're interested in PC gaming and you want a rig, going prebuilt is the way to go.

Just like with the Bitcoin mining surges of the past, the current mining surge coupled with the silicon shortage does not provide an ideal marketplace for gamers trying to buy GPUs and CPUs. System Builders, on the other hand, are able to acquire GPUs for their builds and provide the consumer (us) a more reasonable price for our rigs overall. It might just be anecdotal evidence, but I've heard of more people finding success in getting newer hard to find GPUs by buying whole new systems as opposed to people buying just the GPUs themselves. And we all know how the secondhand market is right now.

I'd just say for the next year or so, it might be cheaper and easier to get a PC from iBuyPower or NZXT instead of trying to build one from the ground up. I'm not an authority on the matter of course so if anyone disagrees please comment and let people know.

Whether you buy prebuilt or build one yourself, either way you ascend to the master race. Hope to see you all there. ✌🏻

what to keep rtx 3060 or rx 6700 xt

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:47 AM PDT

    Hi,

I recently bought an xfx merc 319 rx 6700 xt, which only survived for about an hour in my PC.

I RMA'ed it and after some brief complaining they offered i could buy an rtx 3060, which were normally resererved for their prebuilds, which i accepted.

In the meanwhile i had gotten another rx 6700 xt of a scalper... overpriced but still cheaper than what i can actually sell it for now. Anyways... the scalper was a teenager who was trying to work his way up to building his dream PC, which made me feel a bit better about paying the price premium :p

The question is now.... which one to keep.... i just bough shadow of the tombraider which the rx 6700 xt handles pretty well (with rt shadows set to high at 1440p).

However if i want to venture into the full package with games being fully ray traced, i assume that the rtx 3060 will be a better choice, since we still don't really know how the whole amd fidelityfx super resolution will pan out.

what do you guys think? anyone had experience with both cards? did anyone try out cyberpunk 2077 with an rtx 3060 at 1440p with rt and dlss on?

It would also be an option to keep both cards and maybe give the whole dx12 mgpu a try.... does anyone have experience with mixing nvidia and amd in one system? i know that in theory it should be possible, but i figure that the drivers might just throw a tantrum and get into a bitch fight

    Air cooling vs Water cooling

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:05 AM PDT

    Hello!

My build currently sports an air cooler (NH-D15) and I've been thinking of upgrading to a 280mm or 360mm water cooler. The CPU in the build is a fire spewing i7 10700k@5.0Ghz. The thing can get to over 70⁰ while gaming, and over 90⁰ while exporting video files using Handbrake (this is with fans ramping up to 100%).

Would getting a water cooler be a worthwhile investment?

What's up with defective GPUs selling for insane prices on ebay?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:05 PM PDT

I was on ebay today and noticed several defective/for parts 2080ti listings with bids over $800. Are these just people hoping they can fix the card and willing to take the gamble or am I missing something? Wondering because I have a defective 1070 I am.consodering listing.

Monitors go black and GPU fans speed up to 100% when gaming

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:31 PM PDT

Hi guys, I've been having this problem for a month and a half now and I just can't figure out what the issue is. Built this PC in late 2019 and it's been fine ever since, until 45 days ago. Whenever I start playing a demanding game now my monitors both go black and my GPU fans speed up to 100%. I can still hear the game sound when this happens and the computer doesn't "crash". It's gotten to the point now where it happens within 10 seconds of the actual 'load' being put on the GPU.

    Specs:

    OS: Windows 10 Home

GPU: GIGABYTE 2080 Super WINDFORCE OC 8G

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700X

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

    RAM: G.SKILL 32GB (2x16GB) Ripjaws V Series DDR4 3200MHz PR4-25600

    PSU: CORSAIR RM750 750w

    Motherboard: ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING 4 AM4

    Drives: Sabrent 1TB m.2 2280 & HyperX FURY 120GB SATA SSD

Things I've tried already to see if they fix it and it still happens:

    • Tried a brand new motherboard
    • Tried a brand new 750w PSU and cables
    • Tried a brand new 850w PSU and cables
    • Resat my ram, tried with both sticks and then individually each stick
    • Tried plugging my old 970 in and it still happens
    • Used 2 GPU power cables as well as the single cable split to my 2080 Super
    • Cleaned and applied new thermal paste to my 2080 Super AND to my CPU
    • RMA'd my 2080 Super and they found nothing wrong
    • Installed the latest Nvidia drivers
    • Reverting back to older Nvidia drivers with a fresh uninstall and reinstall
    • Fresh installed Windows from my 120GB SSD to my 1TB m.2 drive
    • Freshly installed the game(s), verifying files, different resolutions etc.
    • Tried different games, anything demanding will cause the issue to happen
    • Plugging my PC into different outlets around the house
    • Using only one of each of my monitors at a time
    • Take out and put back in the CMOS battery
    • Updated my BIOS
    • Messing with all kinds of MSI Afterburner settings, no combination there helped
    • Switched from Display Port to HDMI on one of my monitors, then swapped it to using just the other one. Still happened.
    • Probably some other things that I can't think of right now

So I'm coming to you guys for help. I've tried to read every forum post in full and try everything there and nothing works. I'll try anything that you can think of to get this remedied. Thanks in advance.

How important is changing a PC case?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 08:19 AM PDT

Right now I'm using RTX 2060 and Ryzen 5 5600x on beefy MSI B550 Tomahawk. All of that in case I bought for $15 couple of years ago (Gembird Midi Tower Fornax 150r).

I keep putting case upgrade off, while adding more and more powerful hardware, because I put all the cash into performance. But when is is time to say "stop" and get a new case?

The case comes originally with one 140mm fan, but I also added one 120mm and two 80mm fans (for whom I paid $0). Overall the airflow is not bad.

The cable management is not the worst: all the cables are far from components. They fit well on the rear side. Except for PSU and SATA cables, which go under HDD base. It isn't visible and doesn't interfere with airflow.

Right now I don't need any more features than current case has. So is is it good for me to use that $15 case for some time more?

Turning my OMEN 15 laptop into a desktop PC

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:22 PM PDT

    Hi !

I chose to buy a OMEN 15 laptop back in December 2018 because I wanted a powerful computer for gaming and I needed it to be a laptop to attend my university courses. Sadly, after a year or so, the laptop started overheating and I stopped using it in my classes because of how noisy it was. Now that Covid happened, my university classes are all online so I basically use my laptop as a desktop PC, but the overheating problem still annoys me so I was thinking of buying a desktop PC when I get the money.

Then I thought: what if I turn my laptop into a desktop PC ? For the moment, I am satisfied with it's performance. So would it be wise to just dismantle the laptop and build a desktop PC with it ? I could then use a huge a** passive cooling heatsink and boom ! The heat and noise problems are no more !

I couldn't find anyone online that did this (turning a laptop into a desktop pc), so I wanted to ask you guys if there was any reason I shouldn't do this.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:23 PM PDT

    Hi there

    https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/list/TbvBt8

Already have the GPU, managed to get my hands on one last week. I'm currently using my brothers old PC but couldn't wait for a 3080 due to gaming commitments and stream schedule.

    Everything else I am unsure of, planning on playing/streaming WoW mostly at 1440p with a 1440p and 2x 1080 (maybe 1 1080 and a 2nd 1440)

Would love to stick to as close to white as possible, I know the GPU isn't but i'm sure it won't be a bad contrast.

Any alternative suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you, as I am slightly over budget but not overly concerned.

Currently I have an i9 10900K, 64 GB RAM, with a 1080 Ti I built this system with my boyfriend in December he gave me his 1080 Ti. I have a budget of about $1000 CAD to spend on the GPU. Due to the rarity of 3080's I'm looking to update a list.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:21 PM PDT

As the title says, the unavailability of 3080s has me reaching out to re-build my build list. I've purchased most parts outside the memory and video card.

I am looking to set up a PC that can play most VR games(VR chat, Beatsaber, Halflife Alyx), as well as work programs like Blender and Live 2D. I also want to be able to play games like a heavily modded Civ 6, on Huge/Massive maps with out it chugging and choking. Along with all this, I'd like to be able to stream the above with a Vtuber avatar as well. Here is the list i'm working off of.

I have a Local shop that currently has a RX 6700 XT, and im wondering if that is a viable replacement for the above needs, and if its compatible with all the other parts as well. If not, what available card would yall recommend,

Inflated Prices for GPU only or Everything?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:43 PM PDT

So I don't have a PC at all, my laptop died after years of use in the middle of Covid. I've been sitting on my hands for a while now because of prices, but also lack of willingness to learn and design a build if I can't buy it because of GPU price. It would be my first build, and everyone is saying now is not the time to build, but I'm bored enough out of my mind without my steam library to consider it. But I'm wondering if everything else is inflated too or just GPUs, I was considering if everything else was MSRP I'll just deal with the GPU Price?

    i9 9900k for music production

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:43 AM PDT

Hello, im tasked with building a PC for my father who is very into music production (as a hobby).

He is currently using a laptop, and wants me to do some research for him and maybe build a desktop that can be used for music production and daily use (currently not gaming).

As i understand, the most important components are a fast SSD, 32/64GB RAM and a decent processor. Graphics card not that important.

The i9 9900k is currently on sale for ~400 dollars in my country, which seems like a decent price. Its impossible to get a graphics card where i live. Is it an idea to use intel integrated graphics for this build?

My original idea has been to build a system with a Ryzen 7 5800x and a B550 motherboard (which has PCIe gen 4 (?)), but its a bit more expensive and it will need a graphics card.

Are there many downsides to chosing an older processor/motherboard combo for this use?

Thanks so much in advance for any replies!

I'm planning to transfer my old PC to a friend and wish to copy the important data (Saves, settings and preferences mostly)off to my new build. What's the best way to tackle that and also do a factory reset of the old computer once it's done?

    Title.

Basically i only want the important save data and user data to be transferred, and not clone the entire drives, which i would consider inefficient and also import all the trash and bloatware along with it.

I will have a very similar drive configuration so i could use the same path directories (3 drives, C: E: and H:) so there should be minimal issues on that end.

Then i plan to format the entire computer to reset it back to a blank slate. I'm not sure tho which way is the best for that as i never done it before.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    gaming desk options

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:20 PM PDT

I figure with GPUs forever out of my reach for the time being I may as well replace my desk. I've seen the ikea alex x2 and warbly option and I like it but my ikea refuses to ship the alex for some reason so I can't do it.

I kinda like the idea of an L and also sort of want a height adjustable desk. but I think I'm done with particle board for sure after this one ripped out a leg during a recent move. so a better material than that at least. I'm also looking for something bigger. I have carpet so I can't in good conscience keep my pc on the floor and my desk area is much smaller and cramped right now. the 74 inches of the warbly sound just right for the area I have my desk in right now.

any input would help. budget is $400 but not firm

    iFixit

I got my stimmy and I REALLY want an iFixit kit.

Most of what I've done is the occasional PC build, but I want to branch out into other stuff as well. Thoughts?
