That feeling when you buy a part and see it sold cheaper a few days later...

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 12:29 AM PDT

Title says it all. Bought an S2721DGF for 499.99 plus tax and was happy when arrived. 2 days later I see it being sold for 429.99, ah... life sure is cruel.

AMA: PCPartPicker x charity: water - let’s talk building PCs and building wells!

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 09:03 AM PDT

/r/buildapc is a community dedicated to helping others - so excuse this interruption as we ask for your help with a rather special campaign.

If you've spent five minutes here you will have heard of PCPartPicker - a free, easy to use, and unobtrusive tool created by Phillip over 10 years ago that has made PC building much more accessible for all. What you may not know is that Phillip has also been working to make clean drinking water accessible for many less fortunate communities across the world. In conjunction with charity:water, PCPartPicker has made clean drinking water available to over 34,000 people across Ethiopia, Rwanda, Bangladesh, and more.

Last year, charity:water raised over $320,000 in a one week long campaign. This year, starting from World Water Day (March 22) and ending on Earth Day (April 22), they're hoping to raise money to fund water projects all across the world. Even better, PCPartPicker has promised to match every donation up to $500,000 for a total of 1 million dollars donated!

This is where you come in. Please consider donating to the Water x Stream campaign on Tiltify. Remember, for every dollar you give up to $500,000, the folks at PCPartPicker will match your donation.

If you're a streamer and interested in fundraising for Water x Stream, visit the donation page here and select "Start fundraising". You can find overlays and banners on the charity:water streamers page here.

Just to sweeten the deal, Nvidia have provided us with an RTX 3080 Founders Edition card which we will give away if charity:water is able to surpass last year's landmark of $320,281. Keep an eye out for that goal and for a giveaway post on this subreddit when we reach it!

Lastly, Phillip from PCPartPicker, and Anthony from charity:water are here today to answer any questions you may have regarding the fundraiser, PCPartPicker, or how to smoke a great brisket. Leave a comment below and /u/pcpartpicker and /u/anthony_charitywater will do their best to get to you!

    Tl;dr:

    • Donate to charity:water and watch PCPartPicker match your donations up to $500,000

    • When donations pass last year's total, we'll open up an RTX 3080 giveaway for everyone!

    • Got questions for either PCPartPicker or charity:water? Post 'em in the AMA below!

    Cheers everyone and happy building!

Cpu usage is at 100%. Is that bad?

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:51 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I recently bought a PC from my wife's coworker who is moving away, he gave me a great deal. Everything is working properly as far as I can tell but I am not very experienced when it comes to these sorry of things. After getting all the drivers I needed( I hope all) downloaded I noticed in the task manager that the cpu is always running at 100% even when I am not doing anything.

The cpu is an Intel i7-9700k. I was doing some research and saw that this can happen if there's too many things running in the background or the proper drivers aren't installed.

Did I mess it up somehow? Is it normal for it always to be at 100%? The cooling system seems to be pretty good so will this matter?

Any help would be appreciated. I can provide more info as needed, I wasn't sure what sort of thing would be helpful.

EDIT: I'm going to reinstall windows when I get home from work today, what sort of thing am I going to need to install drivers for? Do I need to look up every part or is it just cpu gpu motherboard?

Edit 2: we resetting boys, hope this does it

Putting my old HDD in my new computer?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:54 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

So, I haven't built a PC in 10 years. My computer that I'm using now, I built anticipating the release of Skyrim.

I recently bought everything I need to build a new computer, including an SSD (Inland Premium 1TB SSD). I plan to install a new copy of Windows on that.

My current computer has a 1TB HDD (that's 10 years old and very slow now) and I want to be able to use it with my new computer, for at least moving the files I want to keep onto my SSD. I imagine that my HDD doesn't have much life left in it, and I plan on using the other SSD slot in my motherboard (Asrock Z490 Pro4) for another SSD sometime in the near future.

I want my new computer to boot into the SSD, and not into the HDD, so I'm thinking of installing Windows on the new machine with only the SSD connected, then after that's done, connecting my old HDD. Will that cause issues?

Would it be weird to have Windows installed on both drives? Will it still boot into the SSD?

    Many thanks.

CRYORIG R1 bracket loose and wiggling on AM4

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 10:32 AM PDT

Hello, I bought an R1 Universal for my Asus B550-E. The R1 comes with an AMD bracket but strangely when I install the 4 screws into the backplate, the screws tighten on the 4 pillars of the backplate but do not rest on the motherboard's PCB. Check the link below for photos to understand better. I tried installing the screws the other way but same issue. Am I doing something wrong? https://imgur.com/a/PU4iYaj

Should I just give up at this point?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 06:39 AM PDT

I own a business that builds and maintains computers from your basic office machines, to high end gaming rigs, up to full enterprise server racks. I'm now going on 5 months since I was able to purchase a single graphics card with performance better than integrated graphics.

Processors have been a struggle too but at least I've managed to snag some older stuff without too many issues. New stuff usually at least has stock long enough to get one.

I'm currently sitting on pending orders for 260+ gaming machines. I've been able to struggle a bit and fill business orders for office computers, but anything requiring any level of graphics processing has been a total no-go and my customers are pissed at delays as well as increased prices (I didn't even match inflations)

I feel like we're just being continually lied to about the silicon situation getting any better, and with the crypto boom on top of that I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Eventually this crypto craze bubble will pop and GPUs will be a dime a dozen if you want used hardware but idk how long it's reasonable to stay open waiting for that to happen.

I don't want to let my team down and abandon them at a hard time, but paying 4 people $25/hr full time isn't sustainable without being able to fill orders. Business went from being extremely profitable and booming to about breaking even most of 2020 to losing a significant amount each month from about October till now.

Idk if this is even a place to post something like this, but I guess I'm just looking for some hive mind thoughts as to when it's going to be at all reasonable to expect any level of stock. I'm thinking 2022 at this point.

    Would you swap a 1440p 144hz 1ms TN Monitor for a 1440p 95hz 5ms IPS HDR monitor?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 09:56 AM PDT

Had this monitor for a while but it's a TN panel so the colour consistency is all over the place. I do gaming and design work so need the colours to be pretty true. The only thing I'm concerned about is going from 144hz to 95hz, but I usually play at 72fps anyway. Would this be a noticeably drastic difference? and is it a decent exchange? Any thoughts would be great, thanks!

Would it be possible/worth it to build a pc, with graphics in the cpu, then buy a proper gpu when I can afford it? Sorry if it’s a dumb question

    Is my PSU Too Small?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:59 PM PDT

I was reading some posts somewhere on reddit where someone mentioned a recommended PSU to a similar build, stating that 750 ish is recommended.

    Here's what I got:

    i7 9700k

    Asus ROG strix 2080ti

    32 GB DDr4

    full atx mobo

6 case fans, three with LEDs, and 4 LED strips

Two hard disk drives and an SSD

webcam, keyboard, glowy mouse, two monitors

All powered by an EVGA G3 Supernova 550 gold

It has been recommended that I upgrade, however, when I calculate all of that stuff on two separate sites, it says my system has approx 550watts. Does that mean I should give myself a little headroom? or is that the PSU its recommending

    Thanks in advace.

PS: My computer has been kind of noisier since I upgraded the cpu and GPU, could this be because the PSU is working extra hard? I've set the fans pretty darn low in the BIOs

Win10 Gaming Rig to the UnRaid do it all machine assistance

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 11:33 AM PDT

Thanks for looking! - Sorry for the length, like the username says I am new and in need of help!

I have watched so many Space Invader One vids to learn, guys my hero. Almost ready to build this next week just some final questions and looking for some feedback in case I missed anything super important!

Cut to the chase - moving from Windows 10 to Unraid and wanted to make sure I am not missing anything before I upgrade my Windows 10 gaming rig to a do it all UnRaid rig.

Main use case: Plex for me and close family to their homes Windows 10 VM for gaming Multiple Linux Vms to learn MacOS relica VM for the wife Start owning my own data with some redundancy (Nextcloud / paperless etc)

Ideally be able to run Plex x3 1080 (1 local 2 remote), and two VMs running to two old laptops to give them new life (one windows one mac).

Here is what I have now, and what I am looking to add in red, MOBO pics to begin with for reference later on

    https://imgur.com/a/fTB7TTa

Thought process: 1) Double ram for more multitasking 2) 2x 8tb Nas - big enough for my plex needs 3) Add a 1TB NVME to put windows on to pass through with the GPU for the Windows 10 VM.

Question 1: Can my MOBO support this all / SSD CACHE CONFIG OPTIONS

Here is my mobo, skip pics for explanation on thought process, 6 SATA ports, 2 NVME slots, 3 PCIe x16, 3 PCIe x1

    I have 3 SSDS (2xNVME) and 3 HDDS, and 1 GPU,

I think I am able to run the PCIE ports in 8x8x4 instead of 16/0/4 (DO I DO THIS VIA BIOS? DOES IT AUTO PICK?)

I read that 8x vs 16x has no gaming performance difference so not concerned there,

Based on the last pictures table I have some flexibility with the NVMEs being in SATA or PCIe, so does having a GPU saturate a PCIe lane and force me to use a NVME in SATA mode. I am looking at the final pictures 1st and 3rd column options for any of the following:

Windows 10 Main passed through: 1x GPU in 8x PCIE slot 1 in 8x to be passed through to Windows 10VM 1x 1TB Samsung 980 in NVME slot 1 in PCIe mode (8x) passed through to Windows 10VM 1x 4TB HDD passed though or in array? (mainly gaming files but as far as I read having it in the array couldn't hurt - only mean more spin ups?)

    With

UnRaid and VMs Option 1: 1x 256 GB SSD (NVME ) in SATA mode in RAID1 with the other 256 GB SSD (MOBO pic 4 Column 1 option)

    or

Option 2: 1x 256 GB (NVME) in PCIe (4x slot) for quicker VMs and Docker Containers that need it and 1x 256GB SSD (Via Sata) for Plex and containers that dont need the extra speed NVME gives (MOBO pic 4 Column 3 option)

    or

Option 3: Raid0 the two SSDs to act as one for more flexible storage

Will option 2 for SSDs even work?

I am partial to option 2 as it will give more VM speed and space and put Plex on a slower (albiet still fast) SSD - I am less concerned about redundancy in SSDs as I will be able to backup VMs and Plex Data externally via this following plan

1x 12 TB external for HDD / Array backup 1x 1TB External SSD for Cache and VM backup

    Offsite storage to follow.

IF YOU'RE STILL HERE THANK YOU, that was the main question

    Followups:

    1) Should I get a USB controller and Sound Card for the PCIe 1 slots to pass through for the Windows 10VM - I am unsure of the IOMMU Groups - Just wait and see what I can pass through when I see the groups or would it be far easier with the controller / card?

    2) Learning Linux I would like to start making it a daily driver - until then what is the state of KVM switches to go from Windows to other VMs? what I could find seemed a couple years old in terms of boarder-less keyboard and mouse apps- could just get a switch to pop back and forth?

    3) First server and still new - with things being internet accessible (forward facing?) I am concerned with security of the network. I was looking at a decent plug and play firewall that isn't basic consumer grade but Pf-sense seems out of my league at this time. I am considering Untagled due to its plug and play nature. Additionally I was looking to host some home automation and security in the future as I move my gaming out of the UnRaid Box to its own machine, giving me some more space to work in it (More SATA ports / 10gig Networking additions). I was looking at Ubiquti Unifi Dream Machine Pro for this. I also read some mixed reviews about it and its firewall capabilities to do some of the regular tasks people chose UnRaid for, any tips would be appreciated!

    4) Any tips on the remote access from laptops - currently using Parsec to access the Windows 10 gaming rig from an old Windows 10 laptop - will look for similar solutions when UnRaid is up and running! I very unfamiliar with the Wife's Mac she would use to access the MacOS VM from.

    5) Should I install the new components on the Windows 10 rig before the Unraid upgrade or power off, install all, run Unraid?

Any help is very much appreciated!

    Best KVM Inquiry

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 11:21 AM PDT

    Situation:

I have 2 monitors a keyboard and mouse that I would like to switch between my Desktop and my work Laptop very seemlessly. I basically just want to have my laptop plugged in nearby on a shelf.

I use DP 1.2 with both monitors for Desktop @ 144hz.

Work Laptop can connect via 2 HDMI ports out of my laptop dock (Thinkpad). Refresh rate is unimportant for Work Laptop.

My monitors have 1 DP and 1 HDMI port each.

I do have Synergy Pro 1, but that requires manual unplug/plug AFAIK

    Requirements:

No plugging or unplugging of connectors to make it work.

Both Monitors can be used for only worklaptop or only desktop

-- nice to have: can do 1 work and 1 desktop per screen.

    Unimportant:

    Audio for work laptop

pass thru power for laptop - can just plug in

    Thanks in advance!

Building a lab computer, wanted suggestions for parts to look into

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:20 PM PDT

A fellow grad student and I are building a lab computer for the lab with a budget of 4k. I consider myself an experienced builder, but I also have no experience with non-personal use computers, and wanted some input from the community.

Primary goal is to have a local machine that can do gpu-accelerated base calling, to remove the need to transfer hundreds of GBs to the HPC.Secondary goals are to have a local linux system to run bioinformatics pipelines that our lab may use in the lab space, having a local machine that can have all our environments, and also potentially a machine that will store all our data we generated from our sequencer and other research activities.

With this, a few considerations are:

    1. Ideally a GPU better than a 2080
    2. Computer will likely not be turned off for extended periods of time
    3. One pipeline I run has pretty high RAM requirements (>64GB). I've been running it locally on my personal computer though, so it isn't a big issue if this isn't satisfied.
    4. Smaller form factors are nicer, since bench/shelf space is valuable

    So, I have some questions:

    1. Does AMD GPUs have something similar to CUDA/CUDNN? I've only done this type of computing with NVIDIA GPUs
    2. Any considerations for parts for something that should be on for basically it's whole life?
    3. How important is ECC? I personally want ECC memory for peace of mind, but I'm concerned that we may be gated by the slower ram speeds for these pipelines.
    4. We're deciding between a Quadro card vs lower end gaming cards. I've only been comparing the single precision flops and tensor core counts, but am confused on what would be the selling points on a Quadro card we can afford vs just a newer lower-end gaming card (ott=her than availability)
    5. Are there SFF mainboards that are compatible with ECC memory? Is Ryzen or Intel better for EC memory?
    6. How reliable are M.2 drives vs Sata SSDs? Are HDDs still more reliable?

Cooler Master Mb311L front fans making static or buzzing-like noise?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:19 PM PDT

Hey guys, so just recently finished my 1st pc build with this case and i've noticed a sort of static-like buzz coming from both of the 2 front fans. The pitch is low but it changes constantly regardless of rpm. Its subtle but noticable sitting arms length away and defo becomes more clear when my head is by the case. Im wondering if I have defective fans or do all cheap fans make this like of static-like noise? Thanks!

Traded out case fans, RGB still blue.

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:05 PM PDT

Disclaimer, I'm not very tech savvy so keep it dumb for me. Long story short I bought 2 packs of Corsair QL 120mm case fans and for a while the RGB worked, icue was fine as well. But later down the road I changed my PSU and then my fans just turned blue mostly, somewhat yellow and some areas were just gray from the lights just not working at all. As icue saw the fans but nothing I did could change the lighting effects. Later today, I got some new fans, EZDIY moonlights, some decent controller fans. As soon as I installed them and powered up the pc, the fans blinked a few colors, then just turned blue, yellow, and gray just like the Corsair fans. I have no idea what's wrong, any advice would be very hip and hood.

    MOBO - MSI Z490 Godlike

Update: I've uninstalled all RGB software and started up in safe mode, lights still blue.

My corsair fans were connected into the MOBO via USB, The EZDIY fans are connected via JRAINBOW. but both fans still ended up blue. Is my MOBO broke?
