This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

What should I upgrade next, CPU or GPU?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 05:08 AM PDT

Hi. I am not a very active reddit user, but I am hoping this is a good option for getting some advice. Here is my current PC:

    Processor: Intel Core i5-357K CPU @ 3.40GHz

    GPU: GeForce GTX 970

That is mostly what I am concerned with. I have 16 GB of RAM, and decent storage with a 1TB SSD handling most of my games.

I recently got an Oculus Quest 2, which I really enjoy, but I would love to be able to reliably play more games with it with the link cable. I don't have a huge budget, but I am not rushing to make this upgrade. I am basically just wondering which I should be looking to upgrade first. Any advice?

Just got a GTX 980ti, getting terrible lag in every game (10-20FPS)

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 07:53 AM PDT

Had a GTX 970 before, and it was working perfectly fine (60-80) fps, in Minecraft for example. I slotted in the GTX 980ti and restarted my pc, and got intense stuttering where everything was unplayable (benchmarks, etc.). Swapped back to my GTX 970 and was now getting the stuttering on that card as well. I did a fresh install of Windows, uninstalled my old drivers with DDU and that solved the stuttering to a degree (on the 980ti) but I'm still getting only around 10-20FPS. Also made sure all of my performance settings (Windows and NVCP) were set to favor high performance, but that has not made a difference. I've reinstalled my processor and GPU drivers multiple times as well. Also tried setting my PCI-E slot to GEN 2 in BIOS, no difference after that either.

    My build:

    i5 4460

    Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI

    Rosewill 600w PSU

    Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM DDR3

What could be causing this? is the GPU bad?

SOLVED: My CPU Heatsink was detached and I didn't notice, processor was running at 99C lol.

hello guys. I would like to send my i5 6600k@4,5ghz in retirement. So i was thinking to get ryzen 5 3600. Now im not sure if i should get Msi B550 A-Pro for 104€ or Msi b450 Gaming plus max for 62€. I would like to keep that system for at least 2 -3 years and after that i would like to go for a DDR5 socket. Im a average gamer and i never buy high end stuff.

    my current system

    cpu: i5 6600k@4.5ghz

Upgrading A Very High End Gaming PC Bought 4 Years Ago.

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:22 AM PDT

Budget (including currency): around 4500 shekels (about 1400$), with a maximum deviation of 500.

    Country: Israel

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I'll be playing new games (like cyberpunk, assassins creed valhalla, etc.) on a 2K 144HZ monitor, and i'd want to play them on ultra/high at above 100 fps if possible.

This is my current pc: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zTVVdm

I'd like to upgrade the CPU, motherboard, CPU cooler and memory (and maybe case if needed), and i'll buy the graphics card (3080/3080Ti) seperately later whenever the restock happens and prices normalize.

It's really important to me that the CPU has high single core speeds, meaning I'd like to OC it to 4.5+Ghz, so I'll need proper cooling for that, and I also want really fast RAM, so I'd like it if it had a base of at least 3866Mhz, low CL and a capacity of 32GB.

    thanks!

PC won't post with 32GB RAM, 16GB or 24GB works just fine

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 01:05 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I have been having a peculiar issue where my PC won't even post if I install 2 different RAM kits onto the motherboard. Here's my current setup

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x, stock with PBO on

    Motherboard: MSI B350M Mortar

GPU: OEM GTX 1660 Ti (pulled from a prebuilt)

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB

HDD: Seagate 4 TB 7200 RPM

PSU: EVGA 650 GQ B-stock unit

    RAM: 4x8 GB G. Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, CAS 18-18-18-36

One RAM kit has gray heatspreaders, the other has black. Otherwise the speeds and timings on each are identical.

The black kit is brand new from an RMA I got from G. Skill after the first kit I bought was found to be unstable no matter what frequency I used. The gray kit I have had for about 4 years now and has been through 3 builds and rock solid in both of them.

The issue I am having is by installing all 4 sticks from both kits, no matter what combination of rearranging them my PC won't even post. 1 stick at a time works fine, running 3 of the 4 works, running each kit separately works and passes a Memtest load for 30 minutes, and even mixing 1 stick from each works, but all 4 together gets me a black screen on boot.

Short of RMAing one of the kits, is there anything else I can try to make it work?

    Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to clean off thermal paste without isopropyl alcohol?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:31 AM PDT

I don't really want to spend £15 for a bottle to clean off stock thermal paste so if there's anything else that I would find around my house that would be great

My roommate has been helping me put together my first PC build and we've hit a wall. The graphics card, fan LEDs, and some lights on the motherboard seem to be getting power, but nothing else is. The fans won't spin and it doesn't seem like the CPU is turning on. I've plugged it into a monitor and nothing, so after a lot of staring at the motherboard and questioning my financial decisions I figured I'd ask some experts for help. I've attached an Imgur gallery of all the pictures I could think to take, and I'd really appreciate any suggestions or corrections.

First time picking out my own parts and building a pc, and on a budget (under $600). With GPU prices the way they are, I decided to go with an iGPU and then add a GPU when prices were stable. Are there any glaring problems with this build?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:06 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Playing E-Sports games such as LoL, Apex Legends, Cs;Go, etc. Later down the line, when I can get a GPU, I want to be able to run new games at 60 FPS. I don't have to run them at ultra settings, just want to at least have good, stable FPS.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Like I said above, later down the line I would like 1080p, at least 60 FPS. Not really looking to run high-end games on ultra settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Under $600 preferably, can't spend much more than that.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United states.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Build is here on PcPartPicker.

I know how bad it is to build a PC right now. However, my brother and I made an arrangement where I would give him my current PC. I want to eventually build him a PC as well, but right now he just wants a system to play Fortnite on, and my current PC can fulfill that role just fine. Thank you for any help!

3060 or wait to get something better?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 12:17 PM PDT

So my buddy lucked out on Best Buy's website and managed to get a 3060 Ventus 3X OC. He's offered to sell it to me for retail, a little over $500. I've been trying for the last two months or so to get a 3060ti / 3070 and have had 0 luck.

I feel as if I should buy the 3060 because it would be a massive upgrade over my current card (1060) but more importantly because it's near impossible to get a GPU right now. I honestly don't know if I'm going to be able to get what I'm looking for any time soon.

On the other hand, I feel like I'm settling on a card that isn't nearly as good as the 3060ti / 3070, and probably isn't worth the $500 I'd be paying for it. Granted, I'd actually be paying a little under $400 for it because I'm selling my 1060 once I get a new card, but I feel like the sentiment still stands. I want to be able to eventually get into 1440p gaming and I feel like the 3060 probably isn't going to help me much in that regard.

I'm stuck here, and could use some advice!

    Specs (might be relevant): 1060 6GB / i7 7700K / 16GB DDR4

For some reason the idle temp is a little high for my liking (~40c) using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut with the 3 bottom fans on intake, 3 pushing the radiator, and 3 more intake top. Case is a Lian Li O11D. CPU is an i7 9700k.

    Check my build!

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 01:35 PM PDT

Hey there, long-time Playstation player here. I've been wanting to build a PC for quite some time now and I have just about everything picked out, but I thought I'd have someone else check the list for me just to see if I need to swap anything out and whatnot.

My current monitor is 1080p 60hz so my main goal right now is to just hit a consistent 60fps at high/ultra settings in games like Overwatch, GTA V, RDR2, etc. Icing on the cake if it goes over that considering I'll probably upgrade my monitor in the future!

Ryzen 3600 aliexpress, is it faulty?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:52 AM PDT

So i bought a Ryzen 3600 processor from aliexpress.

2366 reviews with 4.9 star rating, read on google/reddit it should be a safe buy.

After replacing my 1600 for this new 3600 it booted 1 out of 20 times to windows, the other times it keeps loading endlessly on the motherboard screen.

    Already did:

    - CMOS Reset
    - Updated MB to F51

Is it a faulty processor or am i doing something wrong?

    My PC:

    MB: B450M DS3H-CF
    RAM: 1 x 16GB 3200MHz
    GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3070

GPU died at the worst time, what should I replace it with in this horrifying market?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 08:00 AM PDT

So my GTX 970 died about a month ago after 7 years of service and despite my best efforts I have been unable to find a decent deal on a graphics card. I almost bought a GTX 1660TI for £380 and I cancelled the order because it for real isn't worth that much, I have looked into every card under the sun from 780's to 3060's and the best offer I have had so far is a 1070 8gb for £250, what do you think of that offer? I don't really care about resolutions higher than 1080p and honestly 99% of the games I play were released 3+ years ago like Skyrim, CS:GO, The Witcher, but I might also play RDR2 again though my gtx970 only pulled 50fps on medium settings.
