Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Built my friend a PC for his birthday and I’m very excited to give him it

    Posted: 13 Mar 2021 07:49 PM PST

Specs are AMD FX 8350, 16gb DDR3 ram, 8gb RX 480, windows installed on an ssd with a 2tb hdd to back it up, 600w psu, preinstalled with discord, and steam

I'm really excited to give it to him, he has an OG Xbox one so it's definitely an upgrade.

Just wanted to vent my excitement to someone that isn't my girlfriend for once because it's all greek to her. It's my friend's birthday so I'm not charging him for it.

Edit 1: Here's the imgur album for the photos of his PC build, https://imgur.com/gallery/abp7faG, hope you guys like it! I have his power cable, giving him an hdmi cable, and his spare pc parts in a small Ziploc bag. I pulled them out of the photos because I figured y'all wouldn't be too interested in those lol

Also, thank you guys so much for the awards, seeing this post blow up like this put a smile on my face. You're all awesome and I'll be all of your friends (:

    Any PC Cat-proofing tips?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 01:06 PM PDT

My cats like to climb on/ lay on top of my PC. I assume they like the warmth coming from the fans. The problem is sometimes they still have litter on their paws and it gets into my PC! I am especially worried now because I just picked up an MSI Suprim X and the back of the GPU is open (Not sure if it is for aesthetics or cooling) and I am very worried about what could happen if some litter crumbs or fur get in there!

I cannot move the PC currently. I have my radiator mounted on top and the fans are pointed to exhaust air from the top. It has one of those magnetic mesh covers. If I cover it up I will be suffocating my computer but if I leave it uncovered the cats get their crumbs in my computer. I also worry if I move my computer to where there isn't room for the cats to get on top I will have the same problem, not enough room for airflow/exhaust.

Has anyone had a similar problem and came up with a solution to keep the cats off and the computer temps down?

P.S. This is NOT a shitpost. I am NOT trolling. It IS a silly question but I'm sure other people have had a similar problem.

Do not update your Lenovo Ideapad Flex 15 firmware

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 01:05 PM PDT

Edit: title says 15. I believe my wife's is a 5. Sorry if that causes any confusion.

Tldr: Lenovo ideapad flex 5 with AMD processor is having widespread brickage from a recent firmware update

Being the IT department for my wife's laptop I thought I'd take a look and make sure she had been updating windows and such to keep herself safe/because that is what I prefer for not my own computer.

She has a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 with the Ryzen 4300 processor.

    Update starts

Lenovo splash (NOT WINDOWS) Please wait while we update

    Beeep

    Updating

    Beep

    2 seconds

    beep

    black screen

Huh must have needed a restart like some updates do in windows

    black screen

You gonna turn back on bud?

    30 minutes later

Okay we are going to push the power button

keyboard lights. No display. No post

    Take it to Microcenter

"We have had like 15 this month. The firmware update bricks your motherboard we will order parts."

Upgrading the rest of my PC to support my RTX 2060 Super better for multiplayer at 240hz

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 11:42 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Online live-action multiplayer @ 240 hz 1080p

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    Framerate

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

400€, 500€ as an absolute upper limit

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Germany

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    CPU:

    i5 10400F (125€) or i5 10400 (155€)

I haven't really gone into overclocking since the last CPU I bought was an i7 4790 but I'm definitely open to giving it a shot, if it makes sense without getting a watercooled system. Is the potential performance increase worth the increased price?

    Mainboard:

    Gigabyte B460M D3H (85€)

It supports RAM speed up to 2933mhz. Is going above that going to give me a noticable increase and is going up in price worth it? From what I saw so far, RAM with higher speeds is significantly more expensive, same as mainboards.

    RAM:

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz C16 (85€)

This one I am curious about since it's a 3200mhz stick but the mainboard only supports 2933mhz. Will it still run those without losing performance?

    GPU:

RTX 2060 Super (Already have it in my current toaster)

    +100€ for some case.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Will this work and enable me to play LoL at a decent framerate? I'm upgrading from ancient hardware so I'm hoping to get a smooth framerate in between 144 and 240. Ram sticks at 1.333mhz etc., real old stuff. Thanks a bunch guys

Buy or Build PC for son interested in video editing and live streaming?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 10:46 AM PDT

My son will be graduating from High School in May 2021. He is interested in going to college to learn video editing (He is familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro) like a course offered at Full Sail in Orlando Florida. He also likes to live stream while he is playing on his PC, XBox, or Nintendo Switch.

His current system is a DELL Inspiron 3252 Specifications but because it is old and he has used it for the activities mentioned above and his school work it lags a lot.

I believe he has already asked in this platform for advice, and this is what it has been suggested to him:

    https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/desktops-and-all-in-ones/ideacentre/500-series/IdeaCentre-T540-15ICB-G/p/90LW0001US

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Pavilion-Gaming-Desktop-Tower-AMD-Ryzen-5-2400G-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Graphics-1TB-HDD-8GB-SDRAM-DVD-Mouse-Keyboard-Shadow-Black-Green-LED-Light/755857361?athcpid=755857361&athpgid=athenaItemPage&athcgid=null&athznid=PWVUB&athieid=v0&athstid=CS055&athguid=5519f36c-007-1782829548403b&athancid=null&athena=true

What I would like to know, because I don't know a lot about computers is:

    • Are the suggested computers good for him to use to start with options to upgrade?
    • Are there better options? Where?
    • Is there a basic system we can start from?
    • Are we better off trying to build our own (we'll learn together) with options to upgrade in the future?
    • Budget for this is about $1,000 for now.

I'm new to this platform and I want to reach as many people I can with my question.

    I'll post this in:

    r/buildapc/

    r/pcmasterrace/

    r/techsupport/

I thank you in advance for your replies and suggestions!

Ram and motherboard compatibility for Corsair Vengence LPX

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 09:46 AM PDT

The tech specifications on https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Memory/VENGEANCE-LPX/p/CMK16GX4M2Z3600C18#tab-tech-specs doesn't list AMD 500, does that mean this ram doesn't support the B550 motherboards?

I love building pc's , bit outta touch

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 12:11 PM PDT

My daughter wants to build a pc. (Finally! Yea!) From what I gather, recently not such a great time to build. Chip shortage and all. Is it just nVidia cards, are amd cards available? Really hurts to say this, are pre-builts a viable option atm? I would tell her to just wait it out but time is a factor. She's building it for her SO. kinda needs it soon, the thesis he's creating needs some computational horsepower, aaaaand they are gamers..

Tl:Dr are pre-builts a viable option in this time of chip shortage. Budget around two grand american buckeroos. Can't blow the whole budget on a gpu.

Finally got sick of my ancient laptop and built my first ever PC (after lots of lurking here). My setup is finally complete!

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600

    Storage: Crucial P5 1TB

    PSU: EVGA Supernova P2 750W

    Case: Fractal Define 7 Compact

Monitor: AOC Agon 27" 1440p VA

    GPU...... Nvidia GeForce 710.

Now I just need to bide my time for a 6800XT to become in stock for a reasonable price and I'm set. For now, I am just so psyched to use what I have at the moment since it is miles better than what I am used to despite the shitty graphics card.

    Questions about upgrading a prebuilt

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 01:30 PM PDT

I bought a rog strix prebuilt with a 2080 super but managed to snag a 3070 now. Im super new to pc builds so i was wondering if i can just swap out the gpu if i want? Or can i basically gut the prebuilt and use a new case and motherboard with the existing parts? The motherboard seems really small to so others have complained about needing a new motherboard. Sorry if these are dumb but couldn't find enough (explain like im 5) info

PC won't boot, could use some help

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 12:09 PM PDT

    Hey guys
I've built a PC last year with the help of this subreddit. It has worked fine and without any problems until today.
I didn't use my PC for the last three months, because i was abroad. Came back today, and it was able to boot normaly. However, when i checked my AMD software it said I only had 8GB of RAM instead of 16 GB. So I shut down my PC and plugged my RAM in and out. Rebooted my PC and it didn't boot up properly. RGB and fans start and shut down after like 20 seconds to restart afterwards. Black screen all the way through. Keyboard and mouse won't light up.
I tried booting it with only one RAM and without any RAM plugged in. It didn't help though.

    Specs:

    - MOBO: Asrock B450 Pro 4

    - GPU: 5700xt red devil

    - CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

    - RAM: 2x 8GB Viper

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What to do with a used case?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 11:25 AM PDT

Hi dudes and gals! I've just upgraded my PC case because I needed more hard drive bays. So I'm curious, how do you dispose of old cases? Mine's almost 10 years old and probably not good enough to sell because it doesn't even have USB 3.

Do I just throw it in the trash? Try to get someone who wants it for $5 or give it away for free? What have you done with your old PC cases?

Is this abnormally cheap PSU reputable?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 12:23 PM PDT

Hi, I was looking for a 750w gold full modular PSU and came across this one on newegg https://www.newegg.com/segotep-gp-series-750w-fully-modular/p/1HU-00Z0-00006?Item=9SIAM7KB3V6504. It's only 80$, while a SeaSonic 750w gold full modular would cost almost twice as much, so I wanted to know what the possible repercussions could be, if this brand has been heard of & used before, and if there are any possible features that i'm giving up if I do purchase this psu.

    Thanks in advance!

HELP!!! pc won’t boot after RAM upgrade (red cpu debug LED)

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 01:48 PM PDT

    I just bought a new 2x16gb 3600mhz kit to replace my current 2x8gb 3200mhz.

same brand (TeamGroup), bought from the same place (amazon)

So i turned off and unplugged my pc, took off the front panel, released and removed old ram, and put the two new sticks back into the same slots.

When i turned on the PC, i get a red CPU debug LED. Removed both sticks of ram, put in old ones, got the same result, red cpu led. Took BOTH sticks out, tried to boot, and i get a red RAM LED.

so as far as my knowledge goes, the mobo should be fine, as it's still giving different debug led's.

as far as i'm aware, i didn't touch the CPU or cooler at all during the installation.

i'm at a complete loss as to what else to do. i'd rather not remove my cooler and cpu and double check and re-seat and reapply thermal paste, but i will if i have to.

Current Specs: MSI B450 Tomahawk (NOT max)

    R5 3600x

    1660 Super Gaming X

    750w EVGA 80+ Gold

    Graphics card

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 02:58 PM PDT

I picked the wrong time to build my first PC, I just want a 1660 super but they're all 600+ when they should not cost more than 300. I read it has something to do with crypto mining? Not sure what that entails but because of it there is a shortage for graphics cards as I'm sure you all know. I guess my question is, does anyone know when prices will normalize? Or if there is a store still selling at uninflated prices?

GPU / CPU which should I upgrade first?

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 02:53 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

I'm a big fan of strategy games, especially the Total War franchise, but my current build is limiting my experience to 30fps with some heavy frame drops during battle sequences.

I'm looking to upgrade so I could at least play at a steady 40/50fps.

    My specs:

    • GeForce GTX 1060 3GB;
    • AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core Processor;
    • 16GB ram;
    • 1440p monitor.

Is the performance mentioned above normal for these specifications (while mainly playing Three Kingdoms Total War). What would you upgrade first?

    Memtest 9 freeze while 8.4 doesn't

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 02:51 PM PDT

I've tried memtest latest Version 9 (2000) on 2 different X79 chinese motherboard systems (Jingsha X79M-S V. 1.00 and Machinist X79 V2.82) that one of them (Machinist) has been tested successfully few months ago, And they both froze around 26-28 minutes mark - No matter what memory configuration and memory chips I've tried it with (DDR3 ECC and DDR3 non ECC single and dual channels) - Which didn't seem right.

I've just finished testing both systems with memtest 8.4 free and they've successfully completed 4 test runs.

Just thought this info might save people a lot of frustration.

I5 2ND GEN CPU Best GPU

    Posted: 14 Mar 2021 02:45 PM PDT

First Post ever on reddit, so hope I've not chose the wrong sub to post in. Apologies if thats the case. So before making this post I've spent alot of time on Google. And I'm finding alot of contradicting awnsers. Some dated, so thought I'd ask reddit for myself.

I've just ordered a budget pc to get me started with gaming, which I plan to build a little on.

    The specs are; CORE I5 2ND Gen 16gb ram 1tb hdd Gtx710 2gb

Im planning on buying a new graphics card next month but what is the best for the i5 2nd gen that won't either slow it down or go to waste? I know the processor is dated but due to being on a budget I have to make do with it... for at least now A mate of mine suggested looking out for a more up to date cpu on the cheap... but said I may need to get a new motherboard to install this? Although I will consider this later if nessacary. I really just want the graphics card right now to give my build its full potential. I plan on playing valhiem and kenshi. Possibly halo ark. But if can get 60 fps on red dead redemption 2. Ill be buzzing. I'm seeing the GTX1060 pop up alot but whether my processor will handle it I'm finding it hard to get a clear awnser.... Appretiate all feedback and any advice.
