This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    First PC Build, finally!

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 01:57 AM PST

When I was a teenager, my dad and I spent ages looking at a small paper pamphlet called 'build your own PC' and browsing mail order part catalogues (it was a while back). We never took the step beyond that though of actually doing a build.

My son is now 14 and started looking at pre-built computers for his Minecraft addiction. I suggested that we wait until his birthday and build one ourselves. We finished yesterday and got it all working! We're stoked to have got to this point!

GPU: Sadly none yet, looking at a GTX760 to tide us over until the GPU-pocalypse ends

RGB: oh yes, RGB everywhere - fans, keyboards and he's already talking about getting some extra strip lights!

Having issues with my MSI 3080 Gaming X Trio. Monitor not turning on, losing power on peripherals + other things plugged in

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 03:40 AM PST

hello buildapc subreddit, i'm in need of help. I just put my 3080 in for the first time, and i'm having power issues. I start up my PC, and the PC works fine. Fans move, everything's lighting up. but once it starts, i get no power on my peripherals or my external hard drive. My monitor doesn't turn on either.

The times that it does work is when i have one peripheral plugged in, which is my keyboard. it works the same way with the mouse plugged in by itself as well. i login to my computer, plug in a peripheral and then all of a sudden, my computer freezes. i've never had this problem with previous builds, and i think it may have something to do with my PSU, but i'm not too sure. I have a Corsair HX1000m 1000w 80 plus Platinum Modular PSU. There are even times where i only have my HDMI cable plugged into my monitor and it doesn't turn on. I appreciate it if someone can help me with this, it's really annoying me right now :(

    My overall specs are:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB 3600mhz MOBO: MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk FANS: Noctua NF-A14 140mm PWM Chromax Black Swap 1500RPM WD Blue 2TB Hard Drive Samsung 860 EVO M.2 SATA 1TB WD Green 2.5in SATA SSD 250GB

EDIT: I think I may have fried my PSU trying to set up this 3080... computer instantly shutting down on power press. great

ANOTHER EDIT: i am 90% sure my PSU cooked itself while trying to set up the 3080. SMH. will continue working on it tomorrow and see what happens. i'll keep you guys updated. thanks for all the help so far i appreciate it :3

Just bought a used 2080 XC gaming edition on the Bay for $52.99 with the buy it now option

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 06:45 AM PST

Idk if the seller is gonna try and scam me, or if they accidentally enabled the buy it now option, but I have $50 to gamble so I figured why not give it a shot? Crossing my fingers

The pictures looked legit, and the seller seems so too. You guys think I'm getting scammed, or maybe they're a generous crypto miner trying to pay it forward?

UPDATE: As expected it was a scam. The listing was taken down and the seller's account was deleted. Oh well I can just get my money back.

That feeling when everything is connected to the mobo from the front panel, from the psu, and to the case fans then it booted up fine? We we're jumping out of happiness looool

Having trouble with stuttering during gaming even though I have a good PC

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:26 AM PST

    VIDEO of Gameplay HERE: https://youtu.be/Y_oEYJO2ZWU

I have this issues with all of the video games I'm playing with this stuttering. Please see the example of me playing Valorant in the video above. It happens mostly when I turn the corner or flick a shot really fast. It's really annoying. I'm running 2070 Super, 32 GB Ram, 3900x, 850w power supply, with a 144 hz monitor. Can't seem to figure out the issue. I've tried using Intelligent standby List Cleaner to clear out the standby memory, Using RTSS to stabilize the framerate, and lowering my graphics in game, but I still have this issue. I need help because I have no idea what to do about it. I was wondering if someone here ran into a similar problem and what they did to fix it.

Did I really just set my GPU on fire?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 11:26 AM PST

So two days ago in the middle of an editing project my PSU (Corsair AX860) died.

Because of the time sensitive nature of the project I needed to find a replacement PSU ASAP. Because the AX860 is a few years out of date, I was unable to find any online.

So I drove to my local micro center and bought the closest equivalent PSU, a Corsair RM850.

When I got home and plugged everything in and turned it on, nothing happened. I realized I was using the existing wiring, a full set of white individually sleeved cables purchased from Corsair.

So I unplugged all of the existing cables, and used the included ones in the box, and crucially, only plugged in the 24pin power for the motherboard, and the 4pin power for the CPU.

As soon as I turned on the PC my GPU caught fire and started smoking. I immediately pulled the plug as fast as I could but the damage was already done.

    My 980ti is dead.

    Was this my fault?

I was in such a hurry I didn't consider that these cables wouldn't be compatible with a newer model of PSU.

Did I do this to myself?

Well, looks like I deserved this.

[Troubleshooting] PC keeps restarting after installing 3070, even after DDU and new PSU.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 09:02 AM PST

    Hi all,

I recently installed an RTX 3070. Works fine in-game, performance is where it should be. Temps are normal; I've tracked them during intense gaming and during FurMark, and the temps never went higher than 73, even with ray tracing maxed out and all that jazz.

Nonetheless, the PC hard restarts randomly, both during gaming and when on desktop. This has happened every time I've booted the PC since I installed the 3070.

Suspecting the PSU might be an issue, I swapped out my shitty old one and installed a Corsair RM750.

    Still restarts.

I've flushed out all the drivers with DDU. Tried a clean driver reinstall.

    Still restarts.

I'm at wit's end here, folks. I can't seem to reproduce the issue. It just happens randomly, normally after about an hour or so of use. Any idea as to what I can do to troubleshoot/prevent this? The only thing I haven't tried is physically taking the GPU out and back in again, which I hear can help.

    Here's my setup:

    Motherboard: MSI X570-A PRO

PSU: Corsair RM750, RM Series, 80 Plus Gold Certified

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

    RAM: Corsair VENGEANCELPX16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3600

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 EAGLE OC 8GB

Here is a crash report: https://imgur.com/OVaONif

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

EDIT: May not be important, but I've noticed my GPU temps never rise above 73, even when in-game, and even with max temps set to 85 in Afterburner. Seems a little low?

Confused on what RAM is compatible with my AB350 Pro4 + Ryzen 1700. Not getting advertised speeds.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 12:03 PM PST

Title is pretty self explanatory, but the ASRock website has confused me before with missing or inaccurate information and I just want to get to the bottom of it. Build info at the bottom.

Pulling all of my info directly from their website

It says that on a summit bridge (which my 1700 is), I can get "DDR4 3200+(OC) / 2933(OC) / 2667 / 2400 / 2133 ECC & non-ECC, un-buffered memory" which would lead me to believe that I should be able to get 3200mhz out of some memory. Whenever I go into my bios and enable XMP, I am greeted with a lot of different timing settings I can use. Currently, anything about 2667 causes me to crash and it reboots until it fails 3 times and goes back to 2667.

Also, weird observation, but in CPU-Z on the memory tab, my DRAM frequency says 1330MHz (which I know doubles), but under the SPD tab, it says max bandwidth is 2132. So...not really sure which I'm supposed to believe? Memory vs SPD

I am curious, is this because the RAM is limited, the CPU is limited, or the MOBO is limited? Looking in the actual manual, it says max is 2667, and on the "specs" tab on the site, it says roughly the same..

Any ideas? I've been doing video editing lately and wanted to see if adding more RAM might help, and then went down this big rabbit hole again.

    CPU - Ryzen 1700

    MOBO - ASRock AB350 Pro4 (currently on 5.80 BIOS)

    RAM - 16Gb 2400MHz (2x8)

PC suddenly reboots playing GPU intensive games

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 12:01 PM PST

    FINAL EDIT:

I got the fan working again!

By getting my PC under a moderate load and nudging it around, I was able to get the fan spinning a little bit, though not steadily, and with a 'grinding' sound. Using the nozzle of my compressed air can, I pressed down on the center of the fan, and after applying pressure to a few points, the fan stopped grinding and loosened right up. I'm assuming there must have been something caught somewhere in the mechanism causing it to lock up; but now it spins up and stays moving every time I boot up.

Will obviously keep an eye on it and replace the unit altogether if it craps out again!

    Original post

EDIT: Okay, the problem is DEFINITELY the PSU. It was getting incredibly hot during another GPU test so I checked it out, and the intake fan was moving so slowly it wasn't doing anything. After blocking it with a little piece of card for a second it sped back up, but it's inconsistent. The fan is clearly capable of running at operational speeds, but seems to just, not want to? Is there any reasonable fix for this or should I replace the whole unit?

EDIT 2: In the interest of being a cheapskate and exhausting every (safe) option before shelling out for a new parts, I pulled the PSU, probed the fan with a stick, shook it around, blew a bunch of compressed air into it, the works. The fan is just too stiff; it won't spin if you push on it, even though nothing seems to be obstructing it.

To get it working, I have to put the PC into heavy load and then MANUALLY push the blades in order to get the fan to start unreliably chugging. Was hoping that maybe if I could force the fan to get spinning for a while, the bearing might loosen itself, but this seems like a lost cause...

A couple of days ago my PC shut itself off in the middle of a game of Dead By Daylight. No warning, screen went to black and then a couple of seconds later it booted itself back up

I immediately assumed it was the CPU getting too hot and shutting itself off - I was getting temps close to 100c, so figured I should replace the fan and paste.

With the new fan my CPU maxes out at 80c under stress tests, but was still getting these shutdowns.

Having DBD open causes my GPU to max out at 100%, so I ran a bunch of stress tests with FurMark and everything seems fine with it, never hits temps above 80.

I decided to run CPU and GPU stress tests simultaneously and noticed my PSU started making a really loud noise and was getting pretty hot and realized I hadn't cleaned it in a while, so cleaned the filter and blasted it down with compressed air, but after 30 minutes it happened again.

This seems to be only be reproducible with heavily GPU intensive games. For example, I was able to play Apex Legends without any issues for a couple of hours, but I decided to play a game with all my settings maxed out and crashed in the final ring.

Checked Event Viewer to see what these crashes were listed as: "Critical Error: Kernel Power 41", and most troubleshooting online diagnoses this as a problem with the PSU.

Any idea as to why this is happening? I'm convinced the PSU is dying and simply getting too hot, but I don't want to go to the effort of replacing it without being sure. Any other diagnostics I could be running to get to the bottom of this?

    Using xmp

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 01:19 PM PST

So I've been using my pc and haven't overclocked anything everything's set on default but I want to enable xmp to get the ram speed that it's supposed to be on. The ram I have is 2x8 3600 and I was wondering if this would mess anything up if I turn it on? I have a ryzen 5 3600 and a RTX 2070 super and a rog strix b550 f gaming motherboard. Would anything mess up if I turn it on and can it cause my cpu to heat up more?

How do I install this hard drive?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 08:19 AM PST

Long story short, my buddy donated me his old computer. I re-used the fans/case/psu. I got all new components for the pc. I only got a 500gb SSD to use as a boot drive but I am out of space now. But on the pc he donated to me, he had a 1TB HDD that wasn't cleared. I still have it but it isn't cleared and he said there could be a virus on the pc.

Is there a way I can use this HDD now? Installing it on my pc which is completely different user and data from what is on the hdd. I would obviously need to clear the HDD and wipe it clean of any virus. I just have no idea how to do that so some help would be amazing! Thank you :)

Monitor said no cable connected and now no signal? PLEASE HELP.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:18 PM PST

So I built my PC a few days ago and all has been well Up until now. I played for a few hours earlier today, turned it off and came back to play a few hours later. The monitor then said no cable connected, checked all the cables they were fine. Rebooted, doesn't change. There is power to the monitor and it turns on. Then I switched out the HDMI and now it's saying no signal? I'm honestly baffled lmao, does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening? I'll post my build and the monitor down below.

Debating on the cost savings between the 10600kf and 10600k. As it stands I feel like I don't need an iGPU, but if the cost savings are minimal it might make sense to switch to the 10600k.

Want an Micro ATX build as I currently have a full tower ATX and would like a size reduction.

Currently have HDD and SSD which I will be transferring from my old build.

RAM I was thinking of just grabbing this but it wasn't listed on pcpartpicker.

Motherboard is somewhere I'm not sure if I can save costs or not. Was also looking at this one for possible cost savings. Not really good at comparing motherboards, but both seem to have the main features I'm looking for.

Any way to get this down $200 from the current price?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 11:30 AM PST

Looking to use the computer for music production, beginner video editing, and light gaming. Nothing too crazy so, if I'm being honest, I don't need the best of the best for anything. I'm currently working on a macbook pro 2012 so it's not like I have the highest standards. Think about if you were building a PC for someone you look down on but you still want them to have a good, working computer. What would I end up with?

My computer freezes up and yes, I have already reinstalled windows and drivers. Any ideas?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:08 PM PST

Okay the build is Tuf Gaming x570-Plus motherboard Ryzen 9 3900x Samsung 1tb m.2 Nvme SSD 1tb Seagate HDD(doesnt even show up as a HDD that I can access) 1 stick of 32gb DDR4 3200 TForce Ram 750w PSU

I installed windows from the Microsoft website, and already had a key for registration. The freezing can be fixed by opening the task manager, but will freeze again soon after. At first I couldn't do anything, then I reinstalled every driver I could find for the motherboard. Then it stopped happening! 5 days of pure bliss with an amazingly fast computer. Then it started again. Any ideas?

Posting from 1st self-built PC: recommend free security

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:07 PM PST

First of all I'd like to thank all the people who helped me along the way, it was not easy with the hardware crisis raging. Am I allowed to tag people to thank them for helping me?

Then, I was wondering if people could help me with the best way to secure my PC for free. Or maybe if there's another great subreddit for this, redirect me please. Nice articles about the subject would be appreciated as well of course.

I did just install Kaspersky Antivirus, I enabled the Kaskersky cloud thing. I guess something that finds malware would be nice? What else should I have (besides good passwords)?

Again I am over the moon with this new machine, I've been limping along with totally obsolete hand down laptops for over 2 years, it was becoming hard to just use Facebook alone. I really wasn't sure I could do it either, I'm so glad I didn't mess anything up.

Build a PC for Music Production

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 12:33 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

My dad is an avid music lover and has been creating and producing music for over 30 years. His computer is running extremely slow so I'd like to build him something new.

    Budget: ~$1k USD

    Location: US

This is the DAW he uses to create music.

I've read reviews that Intel is better for music production so preferably building with an i7 or i9.

There is also 4-8 Keyboards / Synths / Drum machines that connect to the PC, so a build with a lot of USB ports is ideal.

    Dual monitor setup.

    Any help is appreciated! Thanks

PC won't boot every time I try to change BIOS settings

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 12:17 AM PST

Hello, I'm running a Ryzen 5 3700x and RTX 2070 on a Gigabyte B550M motherboard. I built it just before the RTX 3000 series launch, so it's still relatively new.

In the past, I was able to change BIOS settings perfectly fine. However, about a month ago I tried to undervolt and underclock my CPU so that it would run quieter overnight (as I'm mining on my GPU when it's not in use). After applying these changes in the BIOS, the computer wouldn't boot. No big deal, I took out the CMOS battery like I had done many times before to reset the BIOS. However, now I can't make any changes!!! Enabling XMP, changing fan curves, any of it just causes the PC to not boot, stuck on a black screen. The problem is solved every time by removing the CMOS battery, but of course all changes to the BIOS are not preserved.

At this point all I'm really hoping for it to be able to enable my XMP profile or at least turn down the fan curves to silent mode. Any help is appreciated.

Oh, and if the info is relevant, I am able to apply undervolting/underclocking through Ryzen Master without issue, as well as overclocking of my GPU through MSI Afterburner. I'm unaware of whether these programs actually interact with the motherboard's BIOS at all, but figured the information may possibly be relevant.

    Thank you!!!

What is the hardest thing while doing your first gaming pc build?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 03:51 AM PST

I've built one pc b4 but never this intense of a gaming pc. Cable managing will be tough but also figuring out what cables lead to which, but what would you think is the most difficult while building your gaming pc from just the parts laid out in front of you?
