Is the RTX 3060 that bad?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:55 AM PST

I ordered the card yesterday and will receive it in a couple of days, but I've been watching the reviews now and it looks like the card has bad performance, I'm scared that I made a bad choice since I've never built a pc myself, my previous prebuily pc died and since I didn't know much about it when choosing the parts I picked a 1050 2gb, I know that it's a big upgrade compared to the 1050, but is it "futureproof" for the coming years

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Since two HDDs on the same power connector died, i thought to investigate. Foolishly in hindshight i tried cheching for overvoltage on said connctector with a multimeter set to dircet current voltage mode. The PC shut immeadiatly of and am since unable to get any startup. If Power is connected to the PC, this unmarked blue LED (PICS) light up but are nowhere mentioned in the Manual. The PC wont boot, not even into bios and no fans or HHDs turn on, just this LED.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Since i thought i fried my PSU i got a replacement from a Friend - still just the blue LED, no startup whatsoever I tried refreshing the CMOS, no change as well Trying with fewer RAM or in other slots Failed as well

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    Image of the LED https://i.imgur.com/kRdGT7h.jpg

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I Plan on checking my graphics card in a friends rig but have no fitting MoBo or CPU around to test them individually.

    Any Ideas whats wrong?

    Thanks a lot

PS: I had a longtime issue with this PC that sometimes i wont boot and the debug LED showed VGA Failiure. But when turning it off with holding the power button and immediatly restarting it would alsways post and run stable. Just an issue on some startups. This may be a help ?

Why do people keep recommending the Ryzen 7 3700X?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:51 AM PST

Why do people keep recommending the Ryzen 7 3700X ($330) over the i7 10700F ($274)?

Intel's B560 motherboards have recently released (which don't artificially limit RAM speed) and you can get a decent ATX B560 motherboard for around $130 (ASRock B550 Steel Legend) whereas a decent ATX B550 motherboard can easily cost $150+ (MSI B550-A PRO).

The i7 10700 performs better than the Ryzen 7 3700X in gaming and in multi-threaded applications it performs about the same as the Ryzen 7 3700X.

You can easily save $50 by going with Intel and even get slightly better performance in gaming without losing performance elsewhere.

The only way the Ryzen 7 3700X currently can close the gap is if you're going to be using the stock cooler. The 3700X stock cooler is adequate, albeit a little noiser, whereas the Intel stock cooler isn't quite as good and you'd be better off buying an aftermarket cooler in most cases. If somebody is going to be buying an aftermarket cooler anyways, then the stock cooler doesn't matter.

Are people not recommending the 10700 just because it is Intel or are most people not aware that the 10700 is on sale for $274 currently?

What is the first thing to do with a new build/prebuild?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 03:52 AM PST

As the title says, what is the first thing you did when you booted up your new build for the first time? (I need some inspiration as I will receive mine next week :D)

A pc-build noob like me will just start installing games right away.

EDIT: Thanks for the reactions. It seems I have a lot of things to do next week.

Used rx570 overheats on windows home screen

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:15 AM PST

My friend recently got a used strix rx570 off of ebay. Whenever the pc boots up, fan speed quickly increases and the back of the pcb becomes hot before the pc black screens and the fans stay at full blast. I think it may need a repaste, as looking down the side of the card the thermal paste looked dry and cracked, but even without good paste is it normal for a gpu to overheat that quickly while idling?

Can someone help me understand the current state of liquid cooling?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:59 AM PST

The last time I looked at liquid cooling, it was a very young technology at the consumer level. It was prone to leaking if not done expertly and rather dangerous to your hardware.

It's now 15 years later and it's a very refined technology and since I just got a fat tax refund back, I'm looking at building a PC. Actually, the parts are already purchased and being shipped (even got a 3070 GPU, luckily) except for the CPU cooler. It's going on a Ryzen 5 5600x in an NZXT H510 (not elite) case.

I want to know what all goes into a liquid cooling setup, including an overview of RGB controllers and how they function.

I've seen setups where there are RGB LEDs on the fans, on the cooling block, on the power cables to the Mobo, etc. How are they controlled? I see that they typically route back and are powered/controlled via a control block, typically behind the mobo tray. Do they plug in via USB? Are they Bluetooth and need a smart phone/tablet (seems odd, but whatever...)?

What companies produce the best products for liquid cooling? Are they different companies than those that produce good RGB setups?

Sorry, I know it's a very ignorant set of questions.

Some help with choosing a pre-built

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:38 AM PST

So I was looking forward to building my first PC ever, but with everything crazy going on it's actually cheaper and much much faster to buy a pre-built where I live. Right now there's 2 options that catch my eyes and I'd like to ask some help with choosing :

1/ Intel Core i5-10400F, 16GB RAM DDR4 (unsure of specific bus speed and such but I've already got a 16Gb kit at 3600 myself), RTX3060 12G and 240GB SSD NVMe. It costs 1,170$.

2/ Identical to the last one except for 8Gb RAM and RTX 3070 8GB. It costs 1,344$.

I'd appreciate any and all feedback as I'm a newb at all this PC building business. Will ask them if I can substitute RAM and such out so please go nuts with suggestions.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

Edit: Store forgot to update, price for the 3070 gig is 1,344$ (was 1,214$ when I first checked. Was wondering if there's a mistake myself)

Hey guys I have the opportunity to trade a 3080 waterforce aio for a 6900XT, straight trade no cash. Should I take it?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:52 AM PST

Its the Aorus 3080 Xtreme Waterforce AIO for the asus 6900XT ( not the tuf or rog version ). I play mostly warzone and other shooters like tarkov. Thanks for the advice!

Is selling my GPU right now a good idea?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:46 AM PST

So right now rx 580s have skyrocketed in price, going for more than £200 what I paid for mines. I was planning on getting an RTX 3070 but obviously that's not really an option right now. So I was thinking I should sell my rx 580 now while prices are this high and get some £50 placeholder GPU off eBay, to play some non GPU intensive games while I wait for RTX 3070s to become available.

Is this a good plan or will I be waiting many months to get a 3070?

My CPU is a Ryzen 5 3600 and I live in the UK if that helps.

Will HDMI get me 144hz on my Monitor??

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:08 AM PST

To give some details, I have an hdmi cable that supports 144hz for 1080p and I just ordered a monitor that says that it's 144hz can only be accessed by DisplayPort (The Acer XFA240 bmjdpr 24"). I looked into it and apparently hdmi CAN support 144hz so will my monitor be fine with the cable I have or do I need a different cable?

My Case didn't come with any GPU screws. And the ones I bought don't fit.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:09 AM PST

So when I went to install my GPU I notice that my case came with no GPU screws, and I have a cheap case that you have to punch out the little GPU bracket plates out of the back of the case. There are screw holes where you should be able to mount the GPU, but NONE of the screws fit that came with the case. I even bought some screws off amazon that fit a much older PC, but they do not fit this case. They are too big! (You can see in the photos were I've tried to install the screws and scratched the paint off) The case also has this weird L shaped bracket that screws into the back of the case next to the GPU, but that doesn't seem to mount the GPU. I don't really know what it does.

Yeah, so I'm hoping I'm just missing something, because right now I have my GPU held up with cardboard!

btw this is my first PC build.

    Thanks!

Pc keeps shutting down from certain games but I have the recommended specs

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:21 PM PST

Hey everyone, my pc has been shutting down and restarting abruptly when I'm gaming. This specifically happened when I'm playing far cry 5 and new dawn. Also happened when I was playing control. Yet I have the requirements for all those games. I played death stranding also with no issue and that's an intensive game for hardware.

I tested my cpu and gpu temps and they seem to be consistent so no overheating. I am honestly thinking it could be something with drivers or a bug with windows update. One last thing is that I checked and I have the required Watts from my psu.

Can anyone help me out with this? Has anyone here went through this?

    M.2 install

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

So I bought a Samsung 970 evo plus 1tb m.2 and I'm working on putting it inside my computer. The question is, I'm trying to put it in the slot right below the CPU but the heat sink cover for the m.2 is way longer than the ssd, should I just plug it in and settle with the adhesive from the heat sink holding it in place? My other one has a screw securing the heat sink and the ssd to the motherboard. Thank you in advance!

Advice for a compact workstation/hybrid build for heavy-ish simulation work

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:50 AM PST

I'm looking to upgrade to a new build either this year or the next. I currently have a 7.5 year old mid-tower which I had originally built as a gaming pc, but gaming was probably the least I used it for. Still, it mounts an i5 and I've been feeling the lack of cores when I do my personal work, which has also become more demanding over the years. Plus, in the last 7.5 years I changed jobs and had to move countries, and moving a mid-tower is a PAIN.

I may be either forced or want to move countries again at some point in the future due to the nature of my industry, so I'm looking to get a small-form factor build that would be reasonably portable.

Trouble is, that it has to pack a real punch.

I've tried to put together a mini-itx through pcspecialist, but I've ran into a few issues.

    • I was looking to get the 24-core Threadripper, but no compatible m-ITX mobos exist AFAIK
    • Capped out at 64GB RAM, while I was looking to get 128

Then comes the GPU (which has to be NV, no exceptions), which has its own subset of problems (on top of the supplying issues):

    • 10GB VRAM on the RTX 3080 are too few and 24GB on the 3090 may be overkill
    • 3090 is 2x the cost of a 3080
    • 3060 has 12GB, but the card itself is too low-end for my needs.
    • ideal would be 16GB, which only the QUADRO 5000 has, but costs even more than the 3090

Any chance for a 16GB 3080 Ti? Or will I have to try my luck with the 4xxx series?

Plus, although it's mainly gonna be a workstation, it's still my personal computer at its core, I'd like to keep the option of gaming on it.

Main powerhorses will be SideFX Houdini, Redshift GPU rendering, and good 'ol Maya. I may need to have two or more running at the same time as well, plus future-proofing. I'd like the build to last as long as this one did (which is still going pretty decently, so not really in a hurry to change).

I've read a couple threads suggesting to cram a full ATX mobo into a small case like the Cerberus X instead, and I like that idea more and more to be honest.

I don't need RGBs, glass panes, Christmas lights, frills nor flashy shit. I find an inconspicuous black box which hides an absolute monster way cooler anyway ;)

I have a 1660ti right now and I'm looking to upgrade to the 3060 is it worth it

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:12 AM PST

Right now I have a 1660ti a ryzen 5 3600 and I do video editing and recording. Would going with the 3060 be a good bet because of the 12 GB vram? Or should I go for the 3060ti or the 3070.

First time building, need some advice

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:47 AM PST

Here's the parts I have picked out: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6sYFMv

Some quick notes regarding the parts I have picked:

    1. I plan on splurging for the CPU and the GPU, I played this game with the PS5 and I don't feel like having several notifications to try and snag a graphics card against the bots.
    2. My goal is to hit 1440p at 144 fps consistently. I plan on doing a lot of first-person shooter gaming like Valorant and Overwatch and so on, but for single player, "pretty" games I will probably just use the PS5 since I don't feel like spending a kidney on 4k parts and I already have a 4k tv for that.
    3. This is the first time I'm jumping into the PC scene (other than laptops) so I'm a complete beginner. Not sure if the parts I have are overkill, so please go easy on me.

UK - Need to build a gaming PC for my bro

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:38 PM PST

I am looking at getting a new PC for my brother. He's started gaming and streaming on twitch and has got a pretty decent following. People are really enjoying watching him play games (crazy world 😀). He's autistic but has really taken to gaming and has quite a lot of followers currently.

He plays non competitive games and I don't believe he would really benefit from something high powered.

Q1 - Are there any major benefits of high FPS monitors if he doesn't play competitive games like Fortnite, cod, apex etc. He currently plays PS4.

Q2 - Am I better buying everything individually or get something pre built?

Q3 - is it realistic to be looking at something around £750 or will I need to go closer to £1200?

Thanks in advance and apologies if I'm breaking any rules.

    How good is a 3060 Ti for a 3700x?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:30 PM PST

So, I am currently amid my first ever pc build, and I have a somewhat decent understanding of pc components and how to build pcs . I would appreciate some help regarding the main question in the title, and the questions below too. Thanks.

I already have my cpu - the 3700x , and if anyone has any other suggestions for a gpu, please let me know as well.

For the build I am rocking a b550 atx mobo, 2 x 8gb gddr4 ram, 512 gb nvme m.2 ssd, Arctic freezer 34 exports duo cpu cooler, nxzt h510 case. Overall, is this a great choice for a build?
