This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    GameCube PC

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 05:33 AM PST

    --Imgur album here--

So, this was my project for the past months. A GameCube pc. I know I'm not the first one to do this, but I do think that mine is one of the cleaner ones out there (in terms of how its built internally). There are multiple images in the linked Imgur gallery with various comments so please also take a look there too if you're interested. I'll include some generic comments here too.

First, the specs of the PC are:

    • AMD 3400G cpu/gpu
    • Asrock A300-STX motherboard
    • Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 chromax.black
    • 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws 3000mhz
    • 1TB Kingston A2000
    • Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200

At the start of the project, I had a few main goals (aside from, of course, getting a pc in a GameCube), and I can happily say that I have managed to tick all the boxes, plus more :)

    1. I wanted to have working GameCube controller ports
This was one of the most important ones. I have GameCube controllers and also DK Bongos and it'd be great to be able to use them in Dolphin. The way I solved this was by taking a MayFlash GameCube USB adapter and then attaching the original GameCube ports to the adapter. And connecting the adapter to the internal USB2 header on the motherboard. There are a few pictures of this in the Imgur album.
    2. I wanted the outside of the GameCube to be as original as possible
I really wanted it to look like a GameCube. The only visible non-original GameCube part is the backplate, which I custom-designed and 3d printed to fit the new back-io, plus I added some more ventilation. Most other GameCube pcs I could find, hollowed out the bottom of the GameCube creating more vertical space. I decided not to, because that would mean the bottom (expansion) compartments of the original would have to be glued shut, which I did not like. As you can see in the images, the bottom compartments still look 100% original and usuable as some kind of storage.
    3. I wanted the GameCube to be properly closed; i.e. not falling apart when you pick it up
This one was tricky to make work together with point 2 and 4. The original GameCube is a sandwich of parts that are all tied together with 4 corner screws on the bottom that screw together the top and bottom case. I could not use those screws, because the motherboard was larger than the original motherboard and thus overlapped the screwholes. I solved this by creating a custom 3d-printed motherboard tray and in essence creating my own sandwich. Sort of. It's difficult to explain in words. The only downside is that it still is not truly properly secured, as part of the sandwich is still based on glue and thus hoping that the glue will hold…Not hollowing out the bottom did gave me a pretty neat bonus though: the front-io of the motherboard perfectly lines up with the first memory card slot. So this thing even has working front-io without having to dremel a hole for it haha. You could stick a usb stick in exactly the same place where you'd normally put your memory card.
    4. I wanted to use as little glue as possible.
First reason for this was that I think just gluing everything is not a very elegant solution. Second reason is that it allows for some form of upgradability. The only things that are glue is some standoffs that are used in the sandwich mentioned in part 2 and the 2nd memory-card flap. All the other stuff is attached using some form of screws and custom 3d-printed parts. I can take disassemble the entire thing with just a screwdriver. Whether it's truly upgradeable I'm not sure, as the tolerances are pretty tight in some places and here and there stuff has been designed for exactly this hardware. But in theory, it should certainly be possible to fit a new STX motherboard in here in the future (if they even exist: STX boards are a rare breed it seems). In any case, it's at least certainly possible to upgrade e.g. the storage :)

Furthermore, I achieved the following small but noteworthy points:

    1. The disc flap top thingy still opens perfect fine.
    2. The power and reset buttons both work as power and reset buttons.
    3. The original power LED works just fine.

Also, in case anyone's wondering: temperatures seem to be fine. At least, I haven't extensively monitored them yet so take this with a pinch of salt, but playing some GameCube games in 1080p or running a benchmark seems to result in temps not much higher than around 70 degrees C. And that is with the top lid closed. Also, I haven't yet fine-tuned the fan-curve, but as it is it's already damn near silent (great cooler Noctua, as always!).

hi, I've heard lots of my friends, also read that people are so happy with switching from a 60hz to a 144hz. I haven't myself really tried a 144hz, im still using 2 60hz monitors, but im curious is there such a huge difference like people describe it? not sure if this is the right subreddit, correct me if it isnt

So I finished my build this year and I am quite happy about the performance. Also it doesnt seem to look this bad. But I think I overdid it a little with the UV-LEDs. Rate it or rant it :)

I found out why my cpu was overheating

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 12:07 PM PST

I made this pc back around early 2013. I have never taken apart the fan radiator sandwich. Recently I have been having over heating problems when I game and stream netflix at the same time. Something about Netflix website absolutely uses cpu and has overheated me in the past. Today was the day to finally open my radiator sandwich and here she was

I got it all cleaned and now I can play and stream netflix hd at the same time again. Btw upgrading to windows 10 ruined the program for windows7 that controlled my fans. Does anyone have a new fan program for windows 10?

I decided to spend a little more on the MB with the MSI B550-A PRO for the USB 3.2 A and C front panel on my case and for a little overclocking. I'm pretty clueless about RAM, I initially wanted 2 sets of 2x8 DDR4-4000 but after doing research I learned that I'd have to dial them back anyway so I went with DDR4-3600. I want but don't need an AIO but for the cooling specs on air cooling at that price it wasn't much more to get an RGB AIO. I'm not stuck on my case choice, but wanted a mesh front case with good out of the box air flow with RGB, so I think the Phanteks Eclipse P500A D-RGB is a good choice. Anyway, any advice or help on shaving off a few dollars from my build would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

A Quick Note About DDR4 Memory for New/Novice Builders

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 01:26 PM PST

I just wrapped up my 2nd pc build and I spent more time than I want to admit troubleshooting ram issues, so I wanted to share to help others.

Just because your ram snaps into the slot and the lock closes does not mean it is seated correctly. You have to push down on the side without the latch until it makes a click and then push the latch side until it locks.

I kept getting an MSI EZ Debug dram error (white led) on the board and I did a full teardown and rebuild only to find that the ram was not properly seated even though the latch had closed.

Anyway, like everyone always says you have to push hard than you expect, but you also need to hear a click on the non-latch side.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Hopefully this helps some other newbie googling EZ Debug codes and stuff.

Updated parts and now want to do a clean reinstall of my system, how do I approaches this?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 01:14 PM PST

I encountered some small annoying issues over the last half year after I updated different parts of my system. Since I changed my monitor and GPU this January it came to a point where I was unable to trace the settings and so on, that partly lead to them. So, I decided to do a clean install of my system. All posts I found on this aim at only deleting the boot drive, can I delete everything in one go? Cause my folders are a mess and some programs are split over 3 drives.

My second question, do I lose licensed programs (license for one computer), or is it still considered the "same" system after a clean reinstall?

I'm kind of lost on these points and don't really know how to search for answers.

Monitor arm that would fit my desk

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 12:32 PM PST

Hello there! I have this desk here. I've been trying to find a monitor arm to mount on it, but I've been unable to. As you can see from one side (both sides and back are the same) regular under desk clamps won't fit. I found this Ergotron mount with a top c-clamp, but in the specs the top desk panel needs to be 12-32mm. My desk is 40mm =/

I have a single 27" vesa monitor and need a single monitor "movable" arm. I have a good stand, but it takes desk space, and the height and movement are limited, so I don't need another stand. Are there other options besides making a grommet hole or bolting the arm to the desk or wall? I'm in Canada if it matters.

    Graphics Card Issue

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 12:25 PM PST

I have built a pc maybe 6/7 months ago no issues.

Over the last few days, what I can only assume is my graphics card, is starting to freak out a little. It doesn't happen on my desktop and just started happening in the middle of a CSGO game. GPU is a 2060 Super.

    Here's a video to help: https://imgur.com/k6g61sb

I have restarted, uninstalled drivers etc. No luck. Anybody have any idea what it might be?

Your cables exist even if they are managed and hidden enough

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 12:16 AM PST

So the story of how I realised I was an idiot begins this week end when I had a bunch of free time and decided to install some custom cables that I had ordered a while back.

My old cable management was really messy so I decided to go for it all, I had the whole afternoon in front of me, some extra SSDs to plug and thermal paste to replace so I begin by cleaning everything and removing dust off the AIO, while it was hanging loose I notice that I can pass the cables behing the motherboard in order to hide them.

I keep going, install my new cables, they look fancy as hell, once everything's installed I plug everything back in, computer boots, I input my password, everything works and since the thermal paste has been changed I notice my computer is more quiet, neat!

Yeah well 5 seconds after my computer crashes, I spent 1 hour troubleshooting thinking "maybe I got the wrong cables, better re plug the ugly ones 😕" when I finally realised that in the pack of cables I hid there was one for the AIO's pump that I forgot to plug back in...

To no one's surprise your CPU cooler works better when it receives power, don't forget your hidden cables everyone 😉

I think I received an unmatched pair of Corsair DDR4-3200, crashing in Warzone

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 07:27 AM PST

So I have had an interesting debugging session this weekend with my friend's brand-new build: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/kDLjK3

The problem he was having was the machine was mostly stable, except for it would pretty reliably crash in Warzone after a few mins, giving 5763 and 6068 errors - memory-related.

As a group we tried pretty much every trick in the book to help him with this, and eventually I took the machine home to run some serious diagnostics on it. The first thing I did was clean reinstall - no improvement. After that I suspected the memory so I tried running one stick at a time, and that seemed to solve the issue. At this point I went down the wrong path, suspecting the Ryzen memory controller, but after trying different SoC voltages I eventually decided to pull the Crucial E-die from my machine that completely fixed the issue, it runs Warzone for hours even at XMP with stock voltage.

The interesting part for me though is why this Corsair memory crashes Warzone when running as a pair but not individually. I have tried all the slots, reversing the sticks, I've done default and XMP profiles, and even tried default @ 1.4V and it crashes Warzone within minutes every time. My only conclusion is that this is an unmatched pair - but I honestly thought that was a myth designed to scare children into paying extra for kits (which this was anyway).

Interested to hear thoughts from other people who have had memory problems?

Last month I knew next to nothing, I've researched , now I know some things.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 12:50 PM PST

...but I don't know close to enough...

I'm trying to build a high performance PC used for scientific calculation (matlab/python). Typically I do image processing on MPixel images 8-12bit. However I don't necessarily have to look at the images in super HD, just do post-processing. (irony: I have roughly 6 TB in data on HDD, this will eventually get turned into a few 100 MB in post-processed results). Oftentimes this means storing quite a few images in RAM while processing and loading/saving massive amounts of data.

I'm not sophisticated enough to do gpu calculations, and I'm not a gamer, so the the gpu doesn't really matter to me. From time to time I do parallel processor computing so the more cores the merrier.

Anyway I've got a healthy budget for this PC since its for work. If anybody has any comments or spots some glaring incompatibilities that would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

Why won't my USB devices fit into my USB 2.0 Type A port on my MSI motherboard?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 11:55 AM PST

I have a few peripherals (keyboard and mice) that I tried connecting to the USB 2.0 Type A port (according to mobo manual) into my motherboard. The mobo is a MSI MEG x570 Unify. However, I can't get the USB devices to properly fit into the USB 2.0 port on the mobo.

For those with MSI mobos, does anyone else have that problem? Or is this a manufacturing error?

    Thanks.

EDIT: photos here, the USB 2.0 are the ones right next to the big red PS/2 port. So the 2 topmost black ports are 2.0. The rest are 3.2.

For those talking about the IO shield, MSI comes with pre-installed IO shield. So I might need to contact them about it, or try to fix it myself. Thanks for this guys.

Help installing Corsair SP120 RGB PRO fans

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 07:24 AM PST

Hey there! I bought a pre built PC a few weeks ago, and wanted to upgrade the fans I have on it. From the lonely stock fan at the back to 3 Corsair RGB SP RGB Pro fans.

However, I'm having trouble in finding space for them, or where the cables go. Can someone help me?

My case is the Corsair 220t and the motherboard is ASUS TUF gaming B550-plus. I also have a Corsair iCUE H100i PRO XT aio.

    Any help is appreciated!

Edit: After seeking advice from elsewhere, I'm just gonna strip the parts down from the case and rebuild it around the fans. My problem was the lack of space for two more, due to it only being pre built for just one. I wanted to avoid that if at all possible, but I guess it can't be helped.
