So I finally got a 144hz monitor... Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:21 PM PST I honestly thought people were exaggerating when they said they couldn't go back to 60hz after using 144hz, but it's so bloody smooth! It's a big jump from my old 1080p 60hz monitor to this new 1440p 155hz (max) one, and it feels weird even moving my mouse over to my secondary display because it seems so jumpy by comparison. I'm spoiled now, not sure how I'll do in games that I can't run at those frames.... So to anyone tossing it up, don't skimp and get a 60hz display like I did for years, it's worth the extra funds on what's without a doubt the most important peripheral. Can we stop being so mean to people who make mistakes in this subreddit? Posted: 05 Feb 2021 02:13 AM PST Whenever I see posts about dumb but honest mistakes due to lack of knowledge or experience, like this guy who spilled water on their PC, this guy with the broken pins inside the motherboard (on r/AMD but the same sentiment) or even my own dumbass using hand alcohol gel to clean CPUs, there is always a large amount of "Oh my god OP how can you be this stupid I always do x and y and never had problems with this and I'm so much smarter and experienced and you should feel bad". And some of these posts get lots of upvotes. I believe it directly breaks Rule 1 of this subreddit. Listen, people who done stupid shit already feel bad and feel a certain amount of self hatred already. Writing mean comments is adding insult to injury, it's toxic and will just push away users from the community. Dumb mistake posts help others to be aware of negative outcomes and how to avoid them. I find it ridiculous how in a sub where so many posts about "Had my high refresh rate monitor at 60 Hz for 2 years now" and "Plugged my monitor into my motherboard instead of graphics card and been using integrated graphics this whole time" are taken lightly and many in the comments tell their own similar stories, but suddenly not knowing other basic shit is asking to be crucified in the comments. By all means, explain why it was a mistake/bad idea, what to do moving forward, and how to avoid it, but spare the mean remarks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Feb 2021 09:06 AM PST I'm planning a new PC build, finally, after maybe a decade. Probably going to be an AMD system with a 3950X. In looking at GPUs, I'm hoping to get my hands on a 3080 (I know it's hell out there, but I'm staying optimistic for now). But one thing I've never really understood: when one looks for an Nvidia RTX 3080, one finds GPUs made by EVGA, Asus, MSI, Gigabyte... is there any real appreciable difference between these different manufacturer's cards? Would there be a particular one that one would recommend for an AMD system? Or is the difference pretty much just aesthetics? [link] [comments]
I FINALLY BUILT IT! My First PC Build Montage 2021 Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:58 AM PST Thanks to everyone in this community for the continued support:) https://youtube.com/watch?v=vSQ4LdwTZmI&feature=share During the pandemic I decided, like many others, it was time to build a home office. Everything from the desk to the PC is custom built and took me on quite the journey. The video spans a couple months of planning, researching, shopping, & building. Toward the end of the build I broke my leg in an unrelated accident so I had my dad help me with some of the heavy lifting. Overall it was a very rewarding experience that I would recommend to anyone considering it. Please feel free to reach out for any questions or to collab in the future [link] [comments]
How to confirm your monitor is actually running at rated refresh rate Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:31 AM PST Saw people talking about not being able to tell the difference between an old monitor and a new 144 hz one, so felt obligated to post this. Check this site- https://www.testufo.com/ It should default the framerate on the top bar to that of your monitor. Does it look significantly better then the one below it at half the framerate? If it doesn't, something is probably wrong, and it isn't actually using the correct refresh rate. [link] [comments]
Putting together a list of compatible parts for a pc under $1600 USD Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:14 AM PST Hi, I am trying to find a nice configuration for a desktop that is fast, good with storage, ram, and does not over heat. I don't know a lot about this, but I think a Ryzen 7 will be a good core, and if possible, high/decent fps on some basic games with good/great settings (not that important). I already have a base list under 1500, but I would be grateful if someone could help me do this. Ps: what is overclocking, and should my pc be able to do that? Link to pdf: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18AEnBNczlvv4oCGNIdGj9AxObsAjj7bb/view?usp=sharing Edit: I have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor already, also, do I need a capture card? Newly built PC turns on but no fans start spinning or anything Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:52 PM PST The power button is lit up but none of the fans are spinning (we haven't installed Windows yet, is that why?) [link] [comments]
USB Wifi adapter is better than PCiE card... what gives? Posted: 05 Feb 2021 11:38 AM PST Coming to here because I can't figure out whats going on. My wifi USB is a Netgear Nighthawk A7000, looking to free up usb space, I eventually found a Ubit PCiE Wifi card I thought was decent enough to upgrade from the USB unit.... only to find that im getting way worse speeds on the PCiE card. Ran speed tests, USB would average 2.4 GHZ speeds at around 14-17 Mbps, which was decent, but my PCiE is averaging speeds of 1-3 Mbps, automatically downgrades my NAT type from Open to Moderate/Strict, which is abyssmal and a obvious downgrade. These were both tested in the same spot, so location has nothing to do with it. The PCiE card I have required Intel Ax200 drivers so I thought that was the problem, but after multiple fresh reinstallations and even re-seating the card, still no luck, the USB still wins by a landslide. Did I buy the wrong card and downgrade? Or does this issue sound software side related? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:50 AM PST So I just got a 3800x on sale for $260. A deal I couldn't pass up... But im still leaning towards the newer 5600x for a few more dollars. Luckily I have a Microcenter local to me. Problem is im stuck with an overclocked 1070ti until I can get a new gpu. Not sure If I should keep the 3800x or upgrade? Its mainly a gaming pc, might have discord or spotify playing. [link] [comments]
Motherboard missing cooler brackets Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:00 PM PST I recently ordered a new motherboard for my first build, and currently have all of the parts now. However, the motherboard did not come with the CPU cooler brackets in order to attack the CPU cooler to the motherboard. What do I do? Posted: 05 Feb 2021 01:12 PM PST I built my PC back in September. Today, it turned off and wouldn't turn back on. I think I've narrowed the problem down to the PSU. I have a Seasonic Focus GM650 80+ gold, which is semi modular. I followed testing instructions from the manual and online, which seems to be similar to a paper clip test, and the PSU fan didn't spin up. The testing instructions seem to be written for fully modular PSUs though and I couldn't find any info on how to test a semi modular PSU. I'm not sure if the loose 6+2 and 4+4 pin connectors (which aren't plugged into anything while I'm testing) on my semi modular PSU are affecting anything. Any help? Is it ok for my RAM to be touching my air cooler? Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:36 AM PST I was thinking about getting another 16 gb of ram making a total of 4 sticks and 32 gb. However, I have a Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler and I first wanted to make sure there was enough clearance to add more ram. I used one of my current sticks since I plan on getting the same kit that I originally got. After putting the fan back on there is essentially no room separating the fan and the ram stick. Is this ok or do I need to maybe look at getting a different CPU cooler too? I know I could just get a 32 gb kit with just 2 sticks but at the prices, they are at right now I would be willing to put in the extra work to put in a better-looking CPU cooler as I am not a huge fan of how big looking air coolers are in comparison to an aio Mobo: MSI B550-A Pro RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V series CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 [link] [comments]
Spending $5000 on a workstation, do these specs make sense? Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:54 PM PST I work in a neuroscience lab and for bureaucratic reasons, if we spend at least $5000 on something it counts as 'equipment' instead of 'supplies', which I guess is desirable because my boss asked me to pick out a computer for just north of $5K. It's gotta be either a Dell or Lenovo because they are our vendors, and our strong preference is that it runs Linux instead of Microsoft. As far as I can tell they don't actually sell anything out of the box for that much, so I have to customize. In any case, I don't know a whole lot about picking out parts, but the computer will mostly be used for real-time processing of neuroscience data in MatLab or Python, and my experience suggestions this will require a lot of RAM, a very good processor, and a decent a mount of storage, although nothing needs to be stored there long-term. I won't be doing any gaming at all on this machine, and I don't expect to do anything that is super graphics-intensive. Some of the code being run might involve neural network or other ML applications, but I have access to other resources to handle most of that. In any case, I put together these specs, but I have no idea if I did something stupid or if I left out something obvious. Any feedback would be appreciated. DRAM light stays on, no POST, no display, no idea where to go from here. Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:50 PM PST List of parts used:
This is my first PC build, so bear with me. I am still trying to figure out how to boot my PC. When it powers on, the DRAM light constantly stays lit. I've tried everything I could think of to get my computer to boot, including the following:
At this point I swear I must have a faulty part somewhere, because I cannot possibly think of anything else I can do at this point. Does anyone have an idea of what part might be faulty from this description? I realllly don't want to have to go through the trouble of buying a buncha new parts just to test them out in the event that it MIGHT work, so I want to know the most efficient and cost-effective method of testing my parts would be. The main suspects here would be the CPU, the Mobo... maybe the cables I'm using? Again, I am highly appreciative of any help I may receive, because I am on the verge of going crazy lmao [link] [comments]
How many generations of GPU can a high end CPU handle before becoming a bottleneck? Posted: 05 Feb 2021 04:45 AM PST Basically i'm planning to buy a high end cpu and pairing it with a high end gpu like RTX 3080. Then waiting at least 2-3 years before replacing the 3080 with 5080 or 6080 etc. How long will it take until I have to replace my CPU (which means motherboard, ram etc as well)? I'm looking at motherboards and I can't tell if it supports my ram Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:35 PM PST I was looking at the ASUS STRIX B550-F GAMING and was looking to pair it with 3600-speed ram, but the closest ram speed listings is 3666(oc). Will the mobo support the Ram? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:29 PM PST The electricity bill is < $300 there should only be a slight difference, not hundreds. It's winter time and of course, the heat has to be the primary cause lol. Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:22 PM PST So this is my current build. My bugdet is not fixed but i would like to spend as litle as possible. Im down to buy used. Also not sure if i should buy AMD ou nvidea. Since my monitor is a Asus that benfits from nvidea but my system is AMD. Im thinking rx570 or 1050ti. M.2 NVMe drive doesn't show up anywhere after wrong bootloader without uefi was installed. Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:13 PM PST Alright guys, I feel like I have a little bit of a situation here: since the old SATA ssd in the pc of my brother died, he got himself a new m2 since his mb gigabyte b450m ds3h supports one pcie gen 3 NVMe SSD. We installed it, I went to get my old win 10 installation dvd and my dumbass brain forgot to switch it on uefi mode before booting from the dvd. System worked until now where it shut down and the drive doesn't show up in bios nor disk part via repair mode. Is there any chance to get this drive back? We have no other pc in the house with NVMe support, my mb ist an ASRock b85 pro4... I hope you guys can help me... [link] [comments] |
