This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Why do we have to pay for RMA shipping? Can someone explain to me?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:53 AM PST

I personally have to pay 40-45€ to ship it to the RMA center (Europe). And I paid 65€ for the item just 6 months ago. I might as well just buy brand new ones.

But even if it was 5€ why do WE have to pay for the shipping when it's THEIR fault the item was defective? What is the logic here? I truly do not understand, really. How on earth is it consumer's problem?

I asked G.Skill (ram sticks) and they are not even willing to give a pre-paid label or cover 50% despite how much I have to pay for the delivery. Not to mention this is the second time I have a G.Skill ram set die on me within 2 years which I didn't even bother RMA-ing back then for similar reasons.

    It's disgusting.

Can someone explain how I am going to move Windows 10 to other pc

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:37 AM PST

I am going to be building my first pc because i bought a prebuilt 4 years ago. I upgraded that prebuilt with a rtx 2070 super but it was being bottlenecked by my bad cpu. Now i have the money to upgrade. I've bought all the parts for my pc and they are arriving soon. The two things i want to move to my new pc is my GPU and my HDD(i dont have an SSD on my current pc). My HDD is old and slow but it has all my games and everything on it. I was wondering how i can transfer windows to the new SSD but still keep all the games if possible. Sorry i am new to this.

I stil want to keep the HDD

Learn From My Mistake Ryzen 7 3700X, MSI B550, NVIDIA Geforce 2080

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:27 PM PST

EDIT (deleted earlier post / trying to get formatting right) (added 1TB WD SSD to Components)

First build with my son. Elated that it's done and working as intended. But here the things that went wrong that I hope you can avoid.

    Components

    • Fractal Design Meshify C Case

    • Ryzen 7 3700X CPU

    • Asus Rog Ryunjin 360 RGB CPU Cooler

    • NVidia GEForce 2080 Super graphics card

    • EVGA 220-G3 Super Nova Power Supply

    • Corsair Vengeance 2X8gb DRAM

    • Seagate 2TB Internal Drive

    • MSI Mag B550 Tomahawk motherboard

    • 1TB WD SSD

    Mistakes I made during build:

    • Bent CPU Pins when I dropped the CPU - be careful - I used a razor blade to fox them

    • Used all three fans from the CPU Cooler but it limited my cable management options when the build was complete - I kept the three but would have better cable management options if I only used 2 of the 3

    • Bunch of the Fractal Design Meshify C case screws only require finger tightening; when I used a philips head I over-tightened - they're a lot harder to remove now

    • Didn't pay enough attention in getting the graphics card set right into the slot and had to reseat a few times

    • At first I failed to offset the motherboard from the case using some gold screws and had to remove the mobo later when I saw how many extra screws I had when I was done

Mistakes I made during test and boot

    • MSI B550 has an EZ Debug LED CPU - DRAM - VGA - BOOT I had problems with each step of the way and could not get my monitor to work

    • I could see each of the LEDs on the mobo telling me what the issue was

    • CPU LED was what led me to discover that I had bent the pins on the CPU - to fix, I had to remove the CPU, use a razor blade to straighten them out and re-install

    • DRAM LED was 4 hours of my life - trying different sticks in different slots; in the end I could only get past when I put one stick in the #2 slot. I'll add the other stick later

    • VGA LED - that led me to reseat the graphics card - I heard a nice click when it was right, also re-checked all the cables.

    • BOOT LED - I had to flash the BIOS using a thumb drive I used to download the latest from MSI webpage

    • Until I cleared all the LED indicators my monitor wasn't getting any connection; the only way it worked was when I cleared each of the items above and plugged the HDMI directly to the slot on the video card vs the HDMI slot on the motherboard.

    • I also needed to remove the CMOS battery for about 2 mins before putting it back in once all the LED lights were clear

    Mistakes I made loading Windows

    • I tried downloading the install files from Mac to a thumb drive and then using that thumb drive to boot the PC - did not work

    • I had to use a PC running Windows to download the files onto the thumb drive - I'm sure there's a way to do it from MAC but it was so much easier when I downloaded from PC

    • Before downloading Windows from the thumb drive I needed to find the Boot sequence in the MSI interface and click and drag USB to the first item in boot behind the CPU

Hope some of these help anyone building their own. Peace!

Is GTX 1660 super a good gpu?

    Graphics card problem !

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:37 AM PST

(Sorry for my english in advance)

I have a MSI RX580 ARMOR OC 8GB and I want to buy the same one , but the graphics card market in my contury is a problem (and I think everywhere) so I cant buy it. The question is if I can buy the same model of the graphics card but not from MSI let's say ASUS , will it work in crossfire. I know it should work in theory but I don't wanna risk it.

    Should I build a PC?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:58 PM PST

Hi everyone, so I want to get a pc to play video games competitively and have been researching the parts I need so that I have a good understanding of the build. My question is if, as a beginner to this realm, I should build the pc myself or have a professional company build it. Thank you.

Fucked up my brand new 3070's temps after repaste. Tried everything, please help

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 04:38 AM PST

TL;DR I failed to apply "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I'll keep this as short as possible, it's a RTX 3070 PNY Gaming Revel that I got a month ago.

In the same benchmark (superposition 4k), my highest temp shot up from 66 to 73 at the same settings, score went down from 10800 to 10200, and the fan is considerably louder.

Paste is Arctic MX-4. I've successfully repasted other GPUs before with significant improvement so I know more or less what I'm dealing with.

Retried the application 3 times with various paste amounts, improved slightly with more paste but nowhere near the original temps.

Case airflow is good, same as before. All 3 fans are working, same as before. Same driver versions, same settings, everything.

The only point of failure at this point seems to be the paste, does MX-4 perform particularly bad for GPUs? Should I get a thermal grizzly kryonaut? Still, how can MX-4 be worse than whatever generic paste they're using in the factory?

Another point to consider is that maybe I didn't tighten the main 4 screws as hard as they were out of the factory, I don't have access to a battery powered screwdriver right now, maybe it wasn't enough by hand force.

Feel free to suggest other things for me to try and unfuck my gpu.

Is it common for multiple parts to be DOA or just randomly die out of seemingly nowhere?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 10:36 AM PST

I've been building PCs since I was in high school and every single PC I have ever build has come with a product that was DOA. My PC previous to the one I have now, had RAM DOA, I had to RMA my graphics card like 10 times over the course of my warranty. I'm sure sapphire saw my emails and was like "Not her again."

But it seems like I'm just incredibly unlucky this time around. It started with a motherboard DOA. Then the replacement motherboard was DOA. So I got a refund and bought a different brand. All good until I realized my CPU cooler was not pumping the liquid cooler. Fans were spinning, but my PC idled on 90c. So I got a new CPU cooler. Guess what? That one was DOA too! Ended up getting mad and just buying an air cooler.

PC worked for a year until my motherboard stopped recognizing the ethernet cord out of nowhere. No one touched the PC. It was working fine the night before. My mobo just decided it didn't like ethernet cords anymore. I replaced the ethernet cord. I plugged it into my laptop. I tried resetting the adapter numerous times, using canned air on it. Eventually I gave up and bought a wifi adapter. Now my graphics card is dying and I cant RMA it since the warranty expired last year. It just seems like one thing after another. At least when I had to RMA my GPU multiple times, it ended up just my CPU not liking my GPU. It was usable, I just had it crash at least once a day.

I take care of my PC. I baby the parts and make sure to ground myself before touching them, but every single time, I have had multiple parts fail. I can't take it anymore. I'm sick of constantly RMAing everything. I'm sick of wondering if I messed up, or if it's just another broke part sent to me. I just want a PC that works the way its supposed to on the first try. I have ate hundreds due to return shipping and replacing parts due to the parts constantly failing conveniently right when the warranty ends.

Am I just extremely unlucky or this a common thing amongst PC builders? If it is, I don't know how you guys do it. I just want to know because I dont want to sink money into another PC in the future just for it to have 2 or 3 parts DOA. I'd rather buy a prebuilt at that point.

USB 3.0 header won't go all the way in?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:23 PM PST

I almost finished building my PC, but I got stalled by the USB 3.0 header. I have an MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX with a USB 3.2 Gen1 port, which to my knowledge is compatible with the 3.0. However, when I plug the cable in, there is still some space between the socket and the header. It looks like the tab that goes into the notch prevents the header from going further. Is this normal? All other cables don't leave any space in-between.

    Final build (now with RGB)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:50 AM PST

What was supposed to be only a GPU and PSU upgrade, ended up being almost a new build.

After getting my 6800XT at a just ok price I decided to also have RGB sticks for the ram which end up meaning that I had to change my CPU cooler because the previous one was over the rams which will block the light. I end up getting this ID Cooling cooler which is slim enough that doesn't cover anything and according to some reviews, works great.

After finishing all, first boot got me a black screen. After some troubleshooting I found that one of the ram sticks was not installed all the way through, so that fixed it.

Rest of the issues were RGB related. First, OpenRGB and Armory Crate only detected 3 of the 4 sticks, I was just about to call it a mobo issue, but installed MOD which was the tool recommended by Crucial and I was able to get it working. Also, because Cooler Master download links are all down, I wasn't able to install the tool needed to control the GPU RGB so I'm stuck with the default configuration.

Main thing I would do different is going for RGB fans instead of ARGB, because with the first ones I can get a controller and have them work better together. Now they all work as if they were one, and I couldn't find any good controller for all of them.

    2 gb GPU/ pre built

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:01 AM PST

I've been looking to switch from console to pc for a while now, obviously it's not the best time to do so but I was wondering if it worth buying a cheaper 2 gb gpu for the time being and wait for prices to stabilise?

Or maybe a pre built wouldn't be the worst option at this stage?

    My ideal build would be, Cpu - Ryzen 5 3600 Gpu - 1660/ rx570/580 4gb B450 motherboard 16 gb ram 500w psu 500gb ssd/1tb hdd

Nothing too crazy but the gpu shenanigans hike the price up a bit...

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Just got a $60,000 signing bonus and I want to build my dream PC

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 06:33 PM PST

    Hi all,

I just accepted a job offer that includes a generous signing bonus of $60,000. I currently do not have any debts, so I decided that I want to build the best PC money can currently buy. I was hoping you could help me with the following questions:

    1) Are there any red flags in my build? 2) Any desk and chair recommendations? 3) Is it OK to air-cool instead of water-cool? 4) When do you expect things will actually be in stock?

    Thanks!

Lian Li Lancool II Mesh (RGB) with 3070 - do I need an additional exhaust fan?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:53 AM PST

Currently waiting for my Lian Li Lancool II Mesh RGB to arrive for my 3070 EVGA XC3 Ultra Gaming build. The case was recommended to me and reading online is supposed to have excellent airflow. I have an i5 10600K as well and a be quiet! Shadow Rock 3 CPU cooler.

Are the 3 case intakes in the case and the CPU cooler fan enough, or should I supplement with an additional exhaust fan? Not sure how much positive airflow there will be without a dedicated exhaust fan and just the CPU cooler's fan.

I'm planning on overclocking the CPU and GPU once I get everything set up and just want to ensure I'm setting the temps up for longevity, but might be overthinking.

How do you even start to build your own PC!?!

It's literally so complicated if you want to do it all yourself without having to get help from experts online like from here.

You have 100 iterations per component and then you have 100 tiers of that. How are you even supposed to start to comprehend or learn this stuff without having a college degree?

Does the Ryzen 3700x need thermal paste or will the stock cooler paste do the trick?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:51 PM PST

I'm building a PC for a friend and I can't really remember if the stock cooler paste is enough (my friend won't do any OC). When I got my 2700x I also bought some Thermal Grizzly to be sure, but I haven't really kept up with the topic.

Hi! I'll be using this PC to play FFXIV, Civilization VI, and some AAA titles in 1080p at 60FPS. Is this a good build? Anywhere I can save money?

PC crashes 10 minutes into every game.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:50 PM PST

Any advice really would be appreciated. TL;DR at the bottom.

    Windows Reliability Monitor

Back in September I built a PC, the specs are as follows:

    i7 8700K

    RTX 2080ti

    Toshiba 1TB m.2 SSD

Western Digital 1TB m.2 SSD (added recently)

    Corsair 850W PSU

    Asus Prime Z390-a Motherboard

It was working perfectly and in late November I installed a new Western Digital m.2 SSD in my second slot. That was also working perfectly, until late December when I experienced my first BSOD. I can't think of anything I did to my PC, hardware or software, prior to that. For the next few weeks I would frequently experience BSODs of various error codes while playing games. I spent several hours doing everything I possibly could (reset my computer, reinstalled my graphics drivers, reinstalled other drivers, updated SSD firmware, updated my BIOS, cleared my temporary files, disabled in-game overlay, removed any overclocking and ran several Windows repair tools within Command Prompt.). Somewhere along the line, I resolved the issue and stopped experiencing BSODs, but now my games will crash to the desktop about 10 minutes in and "Hardware Failure" will show up in my reliability monitor (as pictured). I've tried this with several different games and I experience the same issue each time.

I've tried everything I can to try and figure out the cause of the issue. I ran Furmark (GPU stress test) for an hour an encountered no issues (GPU and CPU temps remained below 50 ° C), I ran the Intel CPU test and it passed with no errors, I ran MemTest86 and it passed with no errors.

I really can't think of what else to do. I've spent hours and hours researching possible solutions and none of them have worked. I realize asking for free tech support is a lot, so if anybody is able to resolve my issue I'll gladly compensate them.

    TL;DR:

Games crash to desktop 10 minutes in, with "Hardware Failure" showing up in Windows Reliability Monitor. In my attempts to fix the issue, I have reset my computer, reinstalled my graphics drivers, reinstalled other drivers, updated SSD firmware, updated my BIOS, cleared my temporary files, disabled in-game overlay, removed any overclocking and ran several Windows repair tools within Command Prompt. I have tested all my components and they showed no errors. My CPU and GPU temperatures remain under 50° C under load.
