This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Built my PC 2 weeks ago, here are some tips I have for people while building for their first time.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:57 PM PST

    1. Your cpu might have crack like sounds when being installed and pushing the lever back down, don't freak out (immediately) because some CPUs will do this.
    2. Put your ram in before your CPU cooler if it might occupy or require low profile memory as it will make dual installation a lot harder.
    3. Try and find out what orientation your motherboard is going to go into your case and preplace cables inside the case to those locations. (personally for me I won't do the PSU cables though.)
    4. Try and at least get good lighting when installing the motherboard in the case, as it'll make your life so much easier.
    5. Make sure your IO shield isn't upside down when installing your motherboard, or else you might spend 20 minutes like me figuring out why the motherboard isn't fitting the screw holes.
    6. Before screwing in your motherboard double check that all holes in your motherboard can be screwed.
    7. As painful as it is, be extra sure that your putting in your case cables in the right place or your computer won't boot.
    8. Your motherboard is pretty resistant, in fact most components to your computer are (CPU and Storage Drives are probably the most fragile). So when installing your 24 pin, don't be afraid to use a good amount of force, but also be sure to cable manage these well, because in the event you need cable manage it somewhere else, it'll be a pain to take out.
    9. Having friends in a call with you will also be a life saver sometimes, it'll make the process go much faster if you have questions that need answered.
    10. When done, make sure you have a good grip on the case before placing it to where you want it. don't want all that work going to waste!

Edit: Here are some tips from YOU guys, thanks for all the support as well.

    1. Build on your motherboard box when installing things on your motherboard. Doubles as cool packaging and an anti-static work station.
    2. If you have a giant CPU cooler, it might be better to install it after screwing in the motherboard.(For me, I was lucky to have a long magnetic screw driver that allowed me to screw it in normally at an angle.)
    3. pre cable manage the cables you can before installing your motherboard in your case.
    4. Don't have friends? Join the BuildAPC discord! You can have answers given to you with in seconds!
    5. Install as many parts as you can on your motherboard before it's in the case (with the exception of the GPU.)
    6. Try and find a video on installing your CPU cooler. Yes they'll have a manual when the time comes but having this knowledge prior and seeing how it's done visually will make the process go much faster. I spent less than 10 minutes installing mine.
    7. Each CPU requires thermal paste if your cooler doesn't have some pre-applied. There are quick infographics online showing you how much for certain CPU types. It's harder than you think to apply too much thermal paste.
    8. CPU cooler fan touching memory = fine, CPU cooler heatsink touching ram heatsink = fine, CPU heatsink directly touching ram = problem
    9. Manuals are good, but youtube videos can make you go much faster. For me I probably read about one part in a manual to help me solve a problem. A quick youtube video shows you a visual example as well.
    10. Double check to see if you have spacers in your case before installing your motherboard. If not please make sure to get them from your case bag parts. Your motherboard CAN short circuit this way.
    11. Try and avoid installing and uninstalling your cpu multiple times, as each time could lead to a pin being bent.
    12. Make sure you know what needs power on your computer. An NVME drive for example gets its power directly from the mobo while other components will need cables directly from the PSU.
    13. Don't zip tie all your cables and reinstall your case sides before turning on your PC. Even though mine worked first try, I did exactly this because I was expecting a problem.
    14. Make sure nothing has plastic on it. Some CPU coolers will have plastic on the giant metal part connecting to your CPU, this could lead to horrible thermal throttling.
    15. Make sure your monitor is actually on when trying to boot for the first time. Happened to me, I felt stupid and relieved at the same time.
    16. Turn on XMP when booting for the first time. It'll save you a bit of time and you could even forget about it. (had a friend who forgot once and was running @ 2666 for years.)
    17. Most drivers will be installed right when you plug in the internet but always double check by searching online automatically for new drivers.
    18. Magnetic screw drivers are going to be a savior when building a computer and I'd highly recommend getting one if you don't have one already.

Took me just over 5 hours to build mine, with few breaks in between. Don't be discouraged! For anyone curious as well, here's my parts list. Good luck future builders!

I contacted MSI because my motherboard did not include an M.2 screw...

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:00 AM PST

... While various forum posts and unboxing videos clearly showed there should be at least one in the box.

Support said they were going to send me one. The package just arrived, but I assumed there was a mix-up because

It came in the biggest box possible.

Filled to the brim with plastic bubble wrap and air pockets. The box contained a smaller box, also filled to the brim with bubble wrap. This box contained a huge anti-static bag. Containing... 2 standoff screws.

I don't need standoff screws, I need the actual screws.

So I contacted them again, clarifying my initial request and urging them to please send those tiny screws with regular envelope mail instead of this incredibly wasteful and ridiculous amount of packaging. Let's hope they listen (and send the correct thing this time.)

If you're getting unexplained stuttering on a high end system - read this

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:42 AM PST

    Hi All,

A couple of months ago I built the ultimate gaming monster which comprised the following:

    • Ryzen 5900X
    • Crosshair VIII Hero (Wifi) Motherboard
    • G Skill Trident Z Neo 3600Mhz C16 RAM
    • RTX 3090 FE
    • ADATA 1TB M.2 NVME
    • 1000w Corsair RMX PSU
    • 2x Samsung Evo 2.5" SSDs

I was getting 100 FPS in every game I tried on max settings (my monitor is 100Hz) however, I noticed that If I dropped 1 frame it would feel like the worst stutter and was really noticeable - the only way I can describe it is like a split second freeze. I thought at first this may have been a G-Sync/V-sync issue - so I decided to cap the framerate at 98 in Nvidia Control Panel - this didn't make a difference at all.

I reinstalled Windows multiple times, stress tested every component, turned off Game Mode/DVR, uninstalled Asus AI Suite/Armoury crate and nothing improved. I then thought - could it be the M.2?

Turns out - it was! I had installed the M.2 with its flat heatsink on with my motherboard heatsink. It turns out it was throttling and I'm surprised that it has lasted this long without melting. I also didn't remove the plastic from the thermal pad on the MB heatsink - which probably didn't t make things any better. Upon removing the M.2 heatsink and just using the MB heatsink I have not got any stutter anymore.

I wanted to write this post to help out anyone who may have made a similar mistake. I honestly wasted hours on end trying to work this out and it was driving me mental.

3080 at 100% Usage for any game

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:25 AM PST

RESOLVED: Was using one power cable from PSU, changed to two and performance is now fixed.

BONUS: Now that the GPU is getting the power it needed, I have severe coil whine. The adventure continues!

    Original Post:

I recently switched over to a 3080 FE (from a 2070 Super) and I'm starting to lose my mind. Any game that I run immediately sends the GPU to 100% usage. I'm getting 60-100 FPS in games like WoW with moderate settings (7) which is worse than the performance I was getting from my 2070 Super. My GPU is never going over 40 C despite this 100% usage and diminished in-game performance. I uninstalled all NVIDIA drivers and GeForce Experience before swapping video cards and then installed everything fresh with the GPU upgrade.

    Original 3DMARK Benchmark: https://imgur.com/ogVxROY

    Resolved 3DMARK Benchmark: https://imgur.com/PrJZAG1

    3700X

    3080

    32 GB DDR4 3200MHz

Any help with this would be amazing. I feel like I'm losing my mind after spending four months trying to get my hands on a 3080 just to have worse performance.

I want to transition into newgen and I need your thoughts on the upgrades I plan to buy

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST

Okay, so I've been getting frustrated lately with the results I've had from my 1080. Since I know pretty much nothing about building gaming PC's, I used to think getting a new GPU would fix all my problems. Here is my current build:

    GPU: GeForce GTX 1080

    CPU: i5-3470 3.20 GHz

Motherboard: Asus Z77-a(probably the biggest offender)

HDD: WD10EZEX (WD Blue 1tb, also terrible)

Okay, so thats what i currently have. I feel like I need to upgrade everything except my GPU. So heres the build i had in mind:

    GPU: GTX 1080

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600(180€)

Motherboard: Either an MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus(160€) or ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming 4s(140€)

    HDD: WD10EZEX

SSD: Transcend PCIe SSD 220S 512gb(75€)

Would this build be compatible? Ive seen people hating on the two motherboards I've chosen on reddit, but are there any other alternatives at this price? I've set a rough budget for myself and, being a student in a Southern European country, I cant really afford to invest more than 150ish into a motherboard.

Please give me any advice if you can. Would i be able to use both this SSD and the HDD i have? Is everything I've chosen compatible with each other? My greatest fear is to buy something I wont be able to use. I already have a wifi adapter, so its not a problem if the MOBO doesnt come with one.

EVGA BR 600W or EVGA BQ 650W? / Is the EVGA BQ more reliable than BR?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:52 AM PST

I can't get my hands on any power supply brand or series other than EVGA BR and BQ. The BQ is a bit more expensive, but offers +50W and is semi-modular. But I don't really need and extra 50 Watts and for it to be semi-modular. Is the BQ more reliable than BR?

I want to get into pc building as a side hussle/profession, any advice?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:18 AM PST

As a preface, I don't know a whole lot about computers. More than everyone else in my so I'm the "tech guy", but that just means I'm aware of how little I actually know.

I, on the other hand, have always had an appreciation and aptitude for computers, and I took that into engineering and graphic design in high school. Giving me knowledge in CAD, and basic wiring (PLTW, iykyk). I'm also a fast learner, picking up and understanding things rather effectively.

So a couple years ago, I built my first (and current) pc, and loved it. I loved picking out the parts, I loved putting it together, and that feel of it first booting up and seeing it work? Bliss. After a few years of occasional upgrades, cleaning, wire reorganizing, I kind of realized that I still love this and that if I could, I would do this as a profession.

Which brings me here. I pretty much don't know anything about anything other than pc part pickers compatibility reports, and plugging pieces together.

TL:DR// Man loves building and working on pc so much decides he wants to do it as a profession. Doesn't know shit about anything, asks for advice.

Never built a PC before, wondering if I’m making any mistakes with this build

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:08 PM PST

Hey guys I'm sure this sort of thing gets posted on here a lot and I'm not really sure how the community feels about it, but I'm building my first PC and I'm curious if I'm making any mistakes with these parts or if there's something I could do better.

I want it to be a nice "middle of the pack" build that I won't need to upgrade for at least a few years.

I'm looking to keep everything around the price of what I have picked out +/- a few if there is something worth changing

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZjMght

(I know there's no video card selected. I will be going with a 3070 once I can actually find one.)

    Sleep or shut off pc?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:06 PM PST

In short, my question is for the longevity of a pc, is it better to sleep or shut off everytime? I started to keep my pc on sleep and turning off when it's night, mainly because I don't ever know when or if through the day I'll use it, so I don't want to constantly turn it on and off. I have a ssd, so boot load times aren't really an issue if it is shut down. So again, is it better to sleep or shut it down? Or will the life of it choosing either be small and negligible?

    Thanks

Out of the loop on Current-Gen CPUs, GPU, and PSUs and would love some small pointers

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:40 AM PST

Hey /r/buildapc, long time no see.

Doing some upgrades on my rig and was looking to get a current-gen AMD CPU and GPU (whenever GPUs are actually back in stock) and was looking at a Ryzen 9 3900x since there seem to be some available. With almost everything out of stock right now, I was curious why it was available. Is it just hugely overkill or is it not recommended for some reason that I'm unaware of? I also plan to get an RX 6000 series GPU whenever they become available again and was wondering if the Corsair RM850 would be a sufficient PSU for these parts. Also would these parts require water cooling as well? I've got a Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler that I got in my last upgrade but was unsure if that's still sufficient for current-gen stuff.

I do a lot of video editing, music production, and plan to catch up on new games like Cyberpunk on my PC and I use it daily for my job so I want to ensure that it'll run smooth as butter for all of that for the foreseeable future.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    PC vs Laptop

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:55 AM PST

    Hello,

I currently own a gaming desktop and I use it every day to do work, study, game, and watch TV and movies.

Because of lockdown, I spend all day in my room, and using one PC for everything means that I am confined to one space all day.

I like to be at my desk throughout the day to work and study, but on evenings I'd rather be on my bed to watch movies and relax.

This has prompted me to buy a laptop, but I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on one because I will only use it for basic stuff.

However, I also don't want a cheap TN panel and IPS screens only seem to come with expensive laptops.

Therefore, I am thinking of selling my desktop and just buying a powerful laptop, and linking my laptop to my monitor, keyboard and mouse during the day, and disconnecting it in the evening.

    My current PC specs are:

    - RX 5600 XT

    - Ryzen 5 3600

    - 16GB RAM

    - 1.5TB SSD

If I sold my PC and got a laptop, the best I could probably get is:

    - i7 10750H

    - 2060 Max Q

    - 16GB RAM

    - 1TB SSD

I only game semi-regularly and to be honest, I mostly play Rocket League.

Do you think it is a good idea?

    Thanks.

first build in 20+ years finished: 5600X + 3090 FE; VRAM cooling progress (long)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:10 AM PST

tl;dr: Replaced a Dell Optiplex 755 Core 2 Quad. Planned on a 5600X + 3080 FE, but blew my budget with a 3090 FE instead. No regrets yet.

    Build pics: https://imgur.com/a/cw3R05U

Story: The last gaming PC I built was in the 90s with an Intel P2-400 and 3dfx Voodoo graphics card. I dialed back my gaming a few years after, fell behind on hardware, and until last week had been using a Dell Optiplex 755 which I "updated" with a Core 2 Quad 9650 and Radeon HD 7750. With an SSD, it was adequate for casual gaming and web browsing.

With COVID and the release of MSFS 2020, my interest in PC gaming was renewed, and I began planning a new build following the release of AMD's Zen 3 CPUs. I finally started buying parts in late November, but it took a long time to find a CPU and GPU.

I used a stock checker on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bgsHmPZId4) to snag the 5600x. I tried the same strategy for a GPU but wasn't successful, and so I started monitoring /r/buildapcsales/ for Best Buy stock drops. I had my eye on a 3080, but when the opportunity came, only the 3090 FE was available.

I had originally planned on flipping it for a 3080 FE on /r/hardwareswap/, but they're in even higher demand. Buying on the open market was unattractive because they were selling for only a few hundred less than 3090 at MSRP. When the rumored 3080 Ti didn't materialize, I began thinking about keeping the 3090.

Keeping the card meant that I could finally stop looking and start building, which had enormous appeal. The recent tariff-related price hikes and high crypto prices convinced me to keep it. Rather spending more time monitoring stock with uncertain prospects, I could mine 24/7 in the background, make up the cost difference in 4-5 months, and enjoy the card all the while and hopefully for years to come.

Unfortunately the unplanned expense on the GPU meant that I have no budget left for the LG 27GN950B that I wanted, and so I'll still be gaming at 60 Hz for the next few months. It's kinda silly with the 3090 but it is what it is.

While mining, I noticed (via GPU-Z) that the GPU was thermal throttling even though the core was at a cool < 50 C. Apparently this was caused by high temps on the backside where there's only a thin plate to cool the 12 GBs of VRAM. The temps would routinely break 100 C and the card would throttle at 110 C. This was seemingly confirmed with the latest HWiNFO64 release which includes a monitor for memory junction temps.

I stuck some 40mm aluminum heatsinks on the backplate to see what would happen. Four were good for ~4 C drop from passive cooling alone--not bad for $10. I'm planning to add a few more heatsinks and add a slim 92mm NF-A9x14 which should help it cool even further.

Can this PC even be built at all?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:35 AM PST

Me and my brother want to build our own PC instead of going out and buying one from Walmart as we want something that is ours that is unique and something we can enjoy.

So after watching some videos on Youtube of custom PCs we found this video

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Perqf0dOGLk&t=385s

And dispite the size of it we like the concept of the idea but we like to do something even more unique. a PC that has more then one OS on it but instead of the OSs sharing the same HDD having each OS on its own HDD.

Also my brother loves having a lot of HDMI Ports Do not ask why he just does.

So after trying to draw up on Paint our concept art we came up with this

    https://imgur.com/56D3Da1

Oh and instead of being as long as the one in the video. Ours would be a lot smaller

    Motherboard rgb fan connectors

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:10 PM PST

I don't really get how the fans part of pcs work. I'm planning on getting a Lancool 2 Mesh RGB. It comes with three rgb fans pre installed in a bracket. Correct me if im wrong:

    1. You can take fans out of the bracket and install it in another place?
    2. Each of the three fans comes with their own fan power plug things where i plug into the system fan motherboard connector + their own rgb plug things, which I can plug into the D_LED1 and LEC_C1 part of the motherboard.

    ^correct me if im wrong,

My motherboard (gigabyte b550m ds3h) only has two LED plug thingies, (D-led1 and Lec_c1), so i can only make two of my fans rgb?

    Case: https://lian-li.com/product/lancool-ii-mesh-rgb/?cn-reloaded=1

    Motherboard: https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Motherboard/B550M-DS3H-rev-1x#kf

    Any help would be nice.

Advice on what to do with old PC?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:55 AM PST

Hey, I have an old 8 year old PC that I am not sure is worth doing anything with. Let me know if I should try to upgrade it, sell it for parts (lol) or just recycle it?

It can play some older games like CSGO, Minecraft but nothing new. Would it be worth it for Bit coin Mining or Streaming off of?

    Intel i5 750 Quad core 2.67Ghz

    4Gb RAM DIMM 1.3Ghz

    Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 x 2 (SLI)

    1GB 7200 Hard Drive

    Motherboard Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD4

    Benchmarks Crash on new pc

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:42 AM PST

Hey there, I've just finished another build for a customer and apparently I can't finish 9 out of 10 benchmarks because they would all eventually freeze or just crash. The PC itself runs just fine it's just the benchmarks that crash and I'm not looking forward to testing cod warzone. Maybe you guys have any idea of what's wrong with it.

    • 5600X (4600MHz, 1.25V - I tried stock settings too)
    • MSI B550 MPG Gaming Plus (latest BIOS)
    • Patriot 32GB 3600MHz (runs at 3400MHz)
    • Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC (65 deg max, tried an older driver already)
    • Focus GX 650W

Temps are fine, Prime 95 runs for hours (68 deg max), cinebench runs just fine, everything else works. It's just GPU-demanding stuff that crashes. I haven't tried anything else besides Furmark and Heaven Valley. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Kind regards

RTX 2060 mini itx version has 1 long beep then 3 beeps, sometimes has green lines and sometimes boots normally

Found a relatively cheap rtx 2060 on ebay but it has the issues as listed above. Has anyone else's GPUs ever had those problems and have you fixed it/gotten it fixed?
