This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Top tip for avoiding driver issues

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 06:56 AM PST

Don't connect to the internet until you've installed everything important.

After countless strange issues with new builds, especially with inbuilt Wi-Fi, Ethernet and some AMD graphics cards, I decided for my last build to install all important drivers without letting Windows connect to the internet, and it was an absolute breeze in comparison.

I downloaded the latest BIOS, Chipset, Networking and Graphics drivers from their manufacturers' websites on a different PC, stuck them on a pen drive, installed them and then finally allowed Windows to connect. Easy enough to do, and no weird issues.

Going to do this every time in future, hope it's helpful!

£400* budget build for my son, we're both pretty happy with it!

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 04:45 PM PST

    Photos here: https://imgur.com/a/67P8dz5
First build in ~20 years...I decided to get the best gaming PC little money can buy, for Christmas for my 11yo son -- and, in all honesty, for myself too :)

He was playing the likes of Minecraft, Roblox, and various Flash games online, on an old laptop.

The guideline for the build was: budget £400, best bang for the buck, cut corners where possible.

I got to have fun researching and building.
The kid got a gaming computer, an understanding of what's inside the black box, and hands-on experience.
We both had a great time together!

    TL;DR:

AMD Radeon RX 580 (SH): £125
    Intel Core i3 10100F: £76
    Gigabyte mobo: £58
    Seasonic S12 III 550W: £50
    256GB SSD + 2TB HDD: £0 (see below)
    Crucial 2x8GB, 2666 MHz: £40
CiT Flash case + extras: £40
    Mechanical keyboard: £22

\* Grand total: £411. Close enough!

Do you think there's anything obviously wrong?

The long story, piece by piece.

    Case: CiT Flash: £35

Could have saved £5 on something even cheaper, but it's a really small price to pay for side and front tempered glass panels and 4 oh, so bling fans! The kid loved it.The metallic walls are super thin, as expected. It's fine, just don't use it to hammer nails.

For the price, it turned out to be great: adequate hidden space behind the right panel for "cable management" (euphemism for the jumble of cables, but hey, they're out of sight), 4 very RGB fans (but not addressable, they just connect to a SATA power cable and there's a button to change modes)Unexpectedly, even the wife loved liked it!

The 3 front intake fans were place very close to the front panel, but were easy to move further back inside the case for more adequate air flow. One exhaust fan in the back. Positive pressure FTW!

It even has metallic mesh dust filters on top (magnetic) and bottom (not). The one thing it does not have is a dust filter where it actually matters - the front panel, which brings me to...

    Ghetto dust filters: £5

I ordered a pack of dryer sheets and a strip of magnetic tape to hold them in place, and covered the front fans. Sorted, and I tell myself it doesn't look too bad!

    CPU & Mobo: Intel 10100F: £76, Gigabyte H410M S2H: £58

I was sure it will be an AMD system (Ryzen 3100) for the longest time, but was swayed to the blue side by lack of availability or price hikes. The cheapest Intel motherboards were also a bit cheaper than the cheapest AMD counterparts.

It had to be a gen 10 Intel, to have some chance of upgradability later, without replacing the motherboard too.

The motherboard was the winner of the race to the bottom. No frills. 2 RAM slots (but hey, no way to install the RAM in the wrong slots!).

I assume it will support the current line-up of gen10 CPUs and future gen11's.In a couple years it will be time to look at the SH market for CPUs. [EDIT: It appears I was wrong. Bummer.]

Also, "BONUS"! - cheaper memory, since this combo only supports RAM < 2666 MHz. Thanks, Intel! \s

    RAM: Crucial 2x8 GB, 2666 MHz: £40

Again, cheapest one that fit the bill. Black friday-ish price drop. No XMP. Oh well, Intel won't let me use faster RAM anyway.

    PSU: Seasonic S12 III 550W 80+ Bronze: £50

Could have gotten something cheaper, but remembered the advice of our forebears:don't skimp on the PSU, don't meet the fire brigade.Seasonics are widely regarded as some of the more trustworthy PSUs, and this had enough power for the GPUs that would fit the budget.

Of course it's not modular. Why pay extra for modular when I can spend 5 minutes of my life to secure the unused cables to the case?

At some point I could have bought the 650W version for the same price, but I had already bought this one and had opened the package.

Storage: Micron 256GB SSD + Seagate Desktop SSHD 2TB SSHD, £0!!

Gutted an old laptop for the SSD.

Remembered I had a box of PC parts laying around, unused for years. There were a bunch of hard drives, one of which I was thrilled to discover had a quite decent 2TB capacity, and it's a SSHD! (is that even still a thing?)

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 580 Pulse 4GB: £125 + blood, sweat and tears

I didn't expect it to run an eye-candy game like Forza Horizon 4 at 3440x1440, everything maxed out, at ~55 FPS. I'm impressed. So far, of all Xbox Game Pass games we tried, the only one that gets choppy is MS Flight Simulator.

    The GPU saga

I started looking at GPUs in November. Was considering a GTX 1650 Super (new) or a GTX 980 Ti (SH), each going for about £140 and wondering if that's a good enough deal.

Then December 1st came and the global GPU drama kicked in!"You thought £140 was too much for a GTX 980 Ti? How does £210 sound? HA!"

For weeks, I couldn't find anything half-decent within the budget. I saw "recently sold" cards at decent prices, but they were getting sold so fast I didn't stand a chance. Xmas was getting closer and I was getting desperate.

    So I wrote a bot.

It scours eBay and messages me when cheaper cards show up. The 'buying' part is manual. There are definitely other people out there that have automated the process, because the time to react for a deal seems to be 1-3 MINUTES!

That's how I could get my hands on the RX 580 for an acceptable £125! Xmas was saved!

    Peripherals

    Dell ultra-wide monitor, 3440x1440, 60 Hz: £0

I happened to have one around.

Keyboard: Aula Assault RGB, mechanical, £22

This one was firmly in "splurge" territory, but the kid was chuffed with the crazy lighting patterns and the (way too) clicky blue (probably knock-off - but still) switches. At the end of the day, £22 for a new mechanical keyboard (that turns out to be built like a tank) is not a bad price.

If you have trouble getting Windows 10 through your school or the student estores, try getting it via Microsoft's Azure website.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 07:24 AM PST

My account with onthehub didnt work in getting a free copy of windows 10, but i was able to get student access to the Microsoft Azure site.

Here are the steps I took to get Windows 10 on my computer.

NOTE: This is free, legal, and through the Microsoft Azure Education site. You can technically skip to step 3 if you need to create your account for azure first, but I did it in this way so you know what to look for.

    1. login to https://portal.azure.com/#home with my regular microsoft outlook email. It ends in outlook.com.
    2. on the search bar within the webpage, there will be a drop down with "recent services." Head on over to the education section OR click this link -> (https://portal.azure.com/#blade/Microsoft_Azure_Education/EducationMenuBlade/overview)
    3. you will see a couple of software already available to you, and near the top, you should also see something about getting student access. Click that and it will lead you to (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/free/students/)
    4. select activate now... all you need to do is verify your student status with a student email address.
    5. Head back to the link posted in number 2, and you should see a longer list of available products... a few of them are windows 10. Some of them say different versions, but a couple of the versions may give you the same microsoft windows key.

I did not have to enter any credit card info. And i am using windows 10 now.

Look for a version of the windows 10 education... im not sure what ALL the differences are, but i think this version is the best. Dont get the "N" version unless you know you need that one.

Building a PC for my 8yr old - Looking for Advice [$800 Budget]

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 07:34 AM PST

I need help optimizing my list...my original budget was $800. If there are better options for the same or cheaper prices...please help.

My 8 year old got into Minecraft on his ipad and now wants it on PC cause he wants to experiment with mods and other things his friends can do on PC that he can't. I also want to build him something where he will be able to play some future titles (he likes Horizon Zero Dawn for PC).

I have a used GTX 1080 and 500gb SSD Samsung Evo. It seems my list below could be optimized to be under $800 for what I want. I really like the case and gskill memory (rgb...hes a kid, probably thinks its cool)....if there is a more budget friendly version similar to this you could recommend please do.

Thanks for your help in advance Reddit.

What is one thing to have on hand that makes building PCs that much easier?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 06:39 AM PST

I've built 3 PCs now and usually always end up buying extra zipties (tweezers) and although some parts will come with it, not all do. Are there any additional tools/parts that greatly aid in building or the upkeep of PCs? Curious to hear your answers.

EDIT: Also, I bought an electric duster and have saved SO MUCH MONEY. Air duster is way too expensive IMO

Could a VR-capable PC be bought for under $1000?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 10:42 AM PST

First timer here, I've never built or really danced with PCs before. VR is a dream to me, and from what I've played from other peoples machines, is something I would very much like to have.

I'd love to be able to come in under $2000 for everything, including the Oculus Rift S I would also be getting.

I'm not quite sure if asking if it's possible to buy a pre-built PC is illegal in a PC building subreddit, but I've never built a PC, and it's a little scary. But I ask your help anyway, I really don't want to waste a lot of money.

A reminder when you RMA a motherboard, from someone who just learned that lesson the hard way.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 05:48 PM PST

Just a reminder, if you ever have to RMA a motherboard after putting it in your build and finding out it doesn't work is to remove all the components from the motherboard before sending it back in.

To the customer who orders a refurbished ASrock b550 pro 4 from BandH who receives a free Crucial P1 1TB nvme drive...you're welcome.

After 13 years I am building myself a desktop again. How is it?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 05:59 AM PST

I can't forget how excited I was when I picked parts for my first PC 13 years ago. It was all black... Long before the rise of RGBs, it was an era of white PC domination. Yet my companion was cladded all in black like a dark knight. A silent protector.

It helped my closest friend with his WoW adventures after 4 years of service under my command. Since then I have always used laptops but now I think the planets have aligned once again. With the rise of the third full moon, I will be building myself the PC I have built below. But I am rusty and have stayed away from the fields for a long time. What do you think of my build?

I need advice for better cooler for my Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:14 AM PST

So I have been playing games with stock cooler, while at some points in games like GTA V or battlefront 2 it went higher than 90 degrees. I wasn't worried because this have read that the limit for the CPU is 95. However last time the temp was 99 degrees, which I am a little worried about. So could you recommend me some solid cooler, under 50€ which would solve my problem? Thank you!

Do AMD cpus degrade worse over time compared to Intel cpus?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 10:21 AM PST

I'm planning to build a pc and couple of people recommended me to go for a intel cpu instead of an amd one because they say that are known to have degradation in performance much faster than the intel counterparts over time. Is this a known fact or just a myth?

I need a temporary graphics card

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 08:57 AM PST

In anticipation of the 3060 ti, I preemptively sold my 1650 to my brother, along with helping him pick out the rest of the parts for his new budget PC. Unfortunately, when the launch happened, I wasn't able to get my hands on a 3060 ti, and now I'm about to have no graphics card, as all of the other components have arrived for his PC. I have the option of buying a used GTX 970 for $100, to tide me over until I can get a 3060 ti. Is it worth the price, and will I be able to resell it when I finally get my hands on a new card? I don't want to screw over my brother and not be able to give him the graphics card for his PC that he already paid for, but I don't want to be stuck with a second card I don't need down the road.

TLDR: should I buy a GTX970 for $100, or keep desperately searching for a 3060ti?

    CPU cooler recommendations

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 10:16 AM PST

I just got my first pc and it seems my cpu may be running hotter than what is expected. My pc has a Ryzen 5 3600 and MSI rtx 3070. Playing call of duty with around 40% cpu usage it is around 80C. I have a single fan 120 mm liquid cooler currently but do not think it is performing well. Any insight is appreciated!

What do you think of my 3070/3080 build?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:17 AM PST

It's time for me to start thinking about building a new pc. I'm going to reuse my old case and, until supply comes back, I'll continue using my 1070. I'm not totally sure if I'll go with a 3070 or 3080 yet, but I think this build should be happy with either.

I included the monitor I've been using to help inform what I'm working with as well. I know it's not really a gaming monitor, it's one my job has loaned to me while working from home. It seems to work great, I'm not totally sure what a true gaming monitor would do differently, but maybe you all will have some thoughts about that.

    Help: Can I assemble/test a build without a case?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:07 AM PST

My case has been on order since middle of November, and still no word on when/if it's coming. The only information is "COVID may cause delays".

But - all of my other components are reaching their "Return by X Date" limit, and I obviously can't check them to see if they work or not.

Can I just assemble all the core components on my table (MOBO, CPU, HD, PSU) and see if everything works? Or is this just asking for a short circuit somewhere because I'm not using a case?

I don't want to finally get everything put together down the road and find out (too late) that I should have RMA'd one of my components.

Thanks for any tips or info.

Need help connecting new graphics card to PSU

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:01 AM PST

So my MSI 3060 Ti gaming trio just arrived (so many sleepless nights, refreshing pages ) and all I need to run it is to orders some power cables. *Using a EVGA B3 550W Bronze PSU

I know it has 2x8 pin slots but I can't seem to find any 2x8 pin male to 6 pin male cables. I'm assuming I have to set it up as such; GPU= 2x8 male to 6 pin fem = into = 6 pin male to 6 pin male =PSU. Is this correct? Are there any potential voltage problems using splitter here?

Also, with my given PSU, should I plug it into VGA or PERIF? I know that'll change whether I need an 8 or 6 pin into the PSU. Here's the link to the PSU: https://eu.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=220-B3-0550-V2

    Cheers.

I'm not very great with computers and I need help

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 04:04 AM PST

Hi, so recently I've (attempted to) upgrade my cpu from a ryzen 3 2200g to a ryzen 5 3600

Ive managed the installation just fine but when I boot it up I get "no signal" on my monitor

No beeping coming from the speakers either

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the bios as my motherboard supports 3rd generations cpus

And I've tried almost everything I can think of

EDIT: Yes I have a graphics card

I'd like to build a PC and have the budget for it but not sure what to buy.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:41 AM PST

    I have a budget of around $2220.
I currently have a PC but it's so out dated (gtx 660 type of out dated) so i'm pretty sure i won't be able to keep anything from my current PC to use on my new build but for the hard drive (I have 8gb of ram but someone told me i can't use rams of different hz's)

I was thinking an RTX 3070 for the VGA and an Intel I9-10850K for the CPU, i still need a monitor and i'm not certain how much watt i need for the PSU, i'll probably go with 32 gigs of ram. For the case, monitor, motherboard, etc, i'm clueless so any suggestions would be wonderful!

Please keep in mind that i'll use this PC to work (as a video editor) and for gaming as well.

    500 gig SSD Western Digital Blue 7MM 545/525 r/W

It didn't say the exact model, but from a bit of googling, the only model of Western Blue with 545/525 r/w I could find is the NAND 3D. Which DOES have dram. So I should be safe, right? I'm concerned because I know there's at least one Western Blue that doesn't have dram, but that one seems to be a completely different type of drive.

Can anyone set my mind at ease? I'd hate to make such a simple mistake.
