    Simple Questions - January 12, 2021

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is this a common problem in this community?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:23 AM PST

I just finished building my first computer a few days ago and I had a blast. Picking out the parts, the anticipation of waiting for everything to arrive, the slightly stressful thrill of putting it all together and then finally the high of success when you see it successfully boot up.

The glow is starting to wear off and I don't even really want to play any games on my new computer; now all I can think about is building another one for my 7 year old daughter. Where is this hobby leading me? This isn't sustainable, I can only build so many computers...

How are you guys getting 3000 series or 6000 cards right now?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:57 AM PST

What is my best option? Online or micro center? Is there a way to check retailers stock dates when they will have more cards? Thanks!

EDIT: thank you everyone for the replies, some great info on this post and way more help than I thought I'd receive. It really is a wild time to be a PC gamer. I hope you all find the cards you're looking for. Good luck

Y'all need to read the description first.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:05 PM PST

Just saw another post asking when 3060ti will be readily available. I've been (loosely) debating a 3070, checked a stock tracker, and saw that, yep, the only site with stock is eBay. Clicked through just for kicks and saw this fine piece of art. Yes, it has 10 bids on it.

Edit: Just reported the listing to eBay. eBay has a terrible report system (only prewritten choices), and has no way to directly report this kind of behavior.

    RTX 3060 12GB Announced - I have some Questions

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:39 AM PST

    • What do you think the performance of the RTX 3060 12GB will be like? In their announcement, they never mentioned anything about how fast it will be (which doesn't seem like a good sign).
    • Is the $329 USD price tag reasonable?
    • Will there be an FE card?
    • When do reviews go live?
    • When will they put out an exact date of launch instead of late February?

An Interesting Option for a new monitor

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:52 AM PST

A different kind of discussion in regards to AIOs!

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:19 PM PST

Hey everyone, a thought just popped in my head and thought I would ask the experts here. I know there has been a lot of different discussion in regards to aio orientation, top/bottom tubes on top blah blah blah. But I actually have another question. I have the MSI 240 aio, and was curious if the tubes themselves, at the point of connection to the water block itself, if where THOSE are oriented matter? Like should it be above the water block, below, side or does it matter? What are your thoughts?

I honestly have no more clue about Ultra wide vs Dual monitor

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:14 PM PST

So im thinking about upgrading my monitor. currently have a cheap 75hz 1080p 24 inch monitor.

Im looking to upgrade to a UW or a new extra monitor. i hear so much different experiences that i dont have a clue any more.

what i do on my pc is: watch movies/series/youtube. play games, runescape the witcher 3, cyberpunk, rocketleague, and sometimes other competitive games, but not a lot. i find that i dont really use my small second monitor a lot. so adding another Monitor would be overkill.

i think buying a UW and keeping my, cheap current main monitor as a second one would be a sweet spot.

im looking to buy this monitor: Iiyama G-Master GB3466WQSU

any ideas an tips on this topic?

Can I have 24gb of RAM?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:50 AM PST

Could I have 2x16 and 1x8? Or 2x16 and 2x4? Or is it a stupid idea either way

    EDIT: I meant 2x8 instead of 2x16 my bad, so 2x8 + 1x8 OR 2x8 + 2x4

As someone who desperately wanted to SEE 144hz, now that I have I must tell you, seeing is 50%, the rest is how it feels, specially FPS games.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 04:56 AM PST

Just so you know, if you play lots of FPS and wanted to get a 144hz monitor but you saw it somewhere, put didn't played with it and ended up giving up on the idea, know that there's more than just the visuals.

To me is quite incredible, maybe not as much as I though it would be but I'm loving it. If feels like I have a better hold on the mouse pointer and when playing FPS (I rarely do) I immediately felt better.. Not "OMG I'm awesome" but there was definitely a very noticeable feel of tight control.

So, as this, along with 1440p, 4k, OLED, 144hz and other stuff that we can't actually know how it feels only searching online, I wanted to give you my insight to maybe get you closer to what actually looks like.

Just finished my first Custom Loop PC, some pictures along with my thoughts / suggestions for people interested in building their own custom water cooling PC

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:24 AM PST

    Pictures:

    https://imgur.com/gallery/DC45lzT

Recently I finished my first custom loop PC. This was a build in progress for me for roughly 6 months. I ran into a few snags along the way, mainly I discovered that the Lian Li 011-d (non XL) was too small and I had to wait on a backorder of the XL to come in. Then I was lucky enough to obtain a 3080 FTW3 Ultra back in early October, but I wound up not being able to actually get a water block for it until just last week.

I wanted to provide a few thoughts I had for people who may be thinking about going down the custom loop path for themselves or are just interested in knowing more.

    1)

Create a loop plan and budget, then take your budget and multiply it by at least 1.5x to get a real number. Yes, seriously everything you expect to need is only at best 75% of what you will actually need. However much hardline tubing you buy, however many fittings you think you need. You will need more than originally planned. Lots of people will buy like 2 90* fittings for an entire build and unless you are like the Beethoven of tube bending that's not going to be enough.

There are lots of additional costs you don't plan for either. Are you doing hard tube? Well did you think about something to do the de-burring? What about bending mandrills? A silicon insert? Heat gun? It all just adds up really quickly.

    2)

Install all your components including pump, radiators, fans, CPU, GPU, water blocks, mother board, RGB LEDs and cable manage it all before you start running tubes. It's especially important to get things like 8pin EPS, VGA and 24pin motherboard cables along with SATA, Front Panel IO, Internal USB run and plugged in early in the build. You wouldn't want to run a tube and then not be able to plug in your mother board 24pin.

    3)

Get a second PSU. No, you don't need 2 PSU's to run a loop. The second PSU can be a giant hunk of crap (mine was $14 on Ebay, good old reliable crappy PSU) you won't be using it to run anything for very long anyways. So why a 2nd PSU? Well, if you've been managing your cables along the way you will get to a point where you need to fill and leak test your loop, but your primary PSU is hooked up to everything. Using that to turn on the loop would also start the PC and in the event of a leak could be catastrophic.

You will use one Molex connector from the 2nd PSU to connect the pump, you will bridge the 24pin ATX cable on the 2nd PSU (to jump start it) and use that PSU alone to fill and leak test your loop. If you do have a leak and some water gets onto something, in theory that component should be absolutely fine as long as it has no power running through it.

    4)

Take your time. Seriously take your time and enjoy the build process. If you are rushed to complete a build like this you will probably take shortcuts and/or make mistakes that will affect the end product. This is true for almost any PC build going for aesthetics but especially true here. With a loop there are so many more moving pieces that the likelihood you overlooked something is higher than ever. Don't rush to finish, take your time and do it right.

I don't really feel like writing much more, those were my high-level thoughts but I'd love to answer any questions anyone has. Also, this was my first loop, these are my thoughts and I may be incorrect or someone with more experience may disagree. That's great and I'd love to hear that too.

    Stutter, FPS drop

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:04 AM PST

Question is my psu able to handle everything? I upgraded my cpu to a amd RYZEN 3600x. And ever since then every game I play will stutter or fps drop? Any suggestions on how to fix or what I can upgrade to fix this. Could it be the psu not supplying enough power? Evga 500 w bronze 1660ti gpu

    I am a complete idiot

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:49 AM PST

Bc I dropped the glas side panel of my Enermax Starryfort sf30 and it broke into about 40000 pieces.

I don't think I can order my exact side panel but is there like a standard for ATX cases ?

    Thanks

Is 500gb storage good enough for a budget pc

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 10:16 AM PST

I'm just about to build a new pc and I was wondering whether 500gb would be good enough to have a few games and some other software (discord, steam, launchers etc).

    Difference between these two ram?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:27 PM PST

I was on newegg looking for some new ram. i've been considering the g.skill trident z neo's when i found two of the same products (in links below). The only difference seems to be the timing from what i can tell so far. Is there a significant difference in these? im just leaning towards going with the cheaper one if theres no noticeable difference in terms of performance. I'm currently building on a x570 & 5600x if you guys have other recs (kinda want rgb's, pls don't kill me)

    $144.99 vs $129.99

    5900x + 3080 COD Cold War 1440p FPS?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:23 AM PST

I play CW with maxed settings, though I use the most quality DLSS setting. I average about 110-120 fps. Anybody else who does the same, what do you get? And should I switch my DLSS to more performance heavy?

Btw, I also run the advanced texture pack, even tho it's supposed to be for 4k, I've heard it makes a difference atr 1440p, is that true or should I turn it off?

Just reviewed my entire new setup and it cost way more than I thought lol

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:52 PM PST

So I just built my first pc, which I posted on here already - but here is a video of the process/final build if you feel so inclined - PC Process/Final Build

But yeah, like title says my entire new setup cost me like $2,600. Granted that is with a second monitor, new mousepad, keyboard, and mouse. But the pc alone still cost me $2,000. I did get some stuff for Christmas though. Just a post to remind people to check the entire price before you start buying parts over like 2 weeks. Luckily this isn't that much more than I budgeted, so I'm fine. I don't really know the point of this post, just wanted to tell someone because I don't know who else I would tell.

Did anyone else have this happen to them?

TL;DR - built a pc/setup and it cost me more than I thought it would. Prices add up quickly.

Losing Hope & Patience for Ampere

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:18 AM PST

So Newegg is now selling 3060ti (MSI) for $630! Literally the last thing I need for my first build is a new graphics card and I'm losing patience. I've been researching and waiting since August to do a build with the new 30 series. My fear now is that we are never going to see MSRP for these cards and this only reaffirms that fear. What a terrible time to finally get into PC building. What would you advise I do to complete this build? I feel like a degenerate with the amount of time I spend receiving notifications and trying to beat the bots. I'm losing it.

Tips on covering up or painting a part of a gpu?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 10:42 AM PST

My gpu has a red trim (pictured below) at the end of it and is now starting to bother me since it clashes with the rest of the build. Any tips on how to cover it with paint or other materials?

The worst part of building a new pc...

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:42 PM PST

...is waiting for the last part to arrive! I have everything except the motherboard so I can't even get started on my build. Checking the shipping updates every 5 minutes lol

Currently watching how to build videos to refresh my knowledge in anticipation and finding mods for the games I want to play. Anything else I can do in preparation while I wait for the last part?
