Im probably going to go with 32, but if there is any benefit to getting more, I'll gladly do it. I've heard so many times that 16gb is enough for gaming, but i rather have more so i can run other stuff on another monitor like YouTube, google, SoundCloud, discord, or just afk on a Minecraft farm if that's possible. | Good Lord, are all discrete GPU’s backlogged??? Posted: 10 Jan 2021 09:27 PM PST My 9-year old has been begging me for a PC for over a year. We tried bootcamp on an old MBP but that's just not cutting it. It's been almost 10 years since I've built a PC myself so I thought it would be fun to do with him. He's mostly just into Minecraft right now but would like to have some wiggle room for other games. I got everything ready in my Amazon cart to ship this week...everything except a GPU. I've been hearing the new high-end ones have been hard to get but I didn't realize even the mid to low end ones were back ordered too. This is crazy. I'm getting the Corei5-9400 with integrated graphics so I'm assuming that should be ok for Mincraft till we can get a discrete GPU. Any ideas/recommendations for a GPU In the $200-250 range? | Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:44 AM PST I ordered all my pc parts at the end of November and they arrived at the start of December. Everything but by GPU had arrived. I still haven't received my GPU due to the current stock issues. The return date on my other parts is coming soon. I don't mind waiting to use my PC properly but is there a cheap alternate that I can buy just to test if my parts work and to download OS. Something so I can just see the pc on my monitor. | Pc working but fans aren't spinning Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:19 AM PST After a long mixup of cables, i was able to complete my build but after i booted up the system, the cpu cooler fan and the power supply's fan didn't work. The system was working but the fans weren't spinning. It was a pre built pc where i added a few new parts and added some old ones. The power supply is new, motherboard is new as well. The processor and the cpu cooler is old. The cpu cooler has 5 pin slots while the motherboard has 4. I just connected the motherboard outside the case and a few essential cables. | Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:07 AM PST Update: I disconnected the rgb cables and the fans all begun to spin so I figured everything was fine. As I was trying to troubleshoot the issues with my monitor to make something appear the aio tubing seems to have ripped itself off and exploded leaking coolant all over the bottom of my case and I'm not sure how much of it got onto the motherboard. As thet happened and I heard the explosion immediately saw smoke rising from the top of the case so I went and turned off everything. Right now I'm trying to just salvage what I can to either reuse or return or throw away. Thanks for everyone trying to help but it seems it was all a bust anyway. I recently made a new rig and wanted to boot it up for the first time today. I plugged in the PSU and decided to try everything on and when I do all it does is turn on all the rgb on the motherboard, ram and fans tuen on and then it shuts right back off. I don't think I shorted anything out tho because after that happens the rgb on my motherboard remains on and so does the ram rgb only the fans turn off. The fans are not spinning either so I'm not sure what exactly the problem is. I have a z490 rog strix mobo, G skill trident rgb 32gb ram and a the masterfan m120r argb case fan and my case is the lian li pc-011 dynamic xl. If anyone can help me try to figure out what's wrong it would be greatly appreciated. Things I want to get. 2 Monitors (1080p and 1440p) Arm for monitors Case SSD HDD (at least 3tb) Bluetooth adapter Wifi Adapter Cpu Cooler 16gb ram Motherboard Windows Psu With all that already is it realistic that I can get a gpu and cpu that can run 1440p at a solid 60 and stay close to my 1k mark. If so what combos should I look at. Also monitor wise what might be my best option. I want 1080p 144hz for faster paced games but 1440p for more visual games. | Want to build PC - ready for RTX 3080(Ti) when it's available. Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:42 AM PST Right now there is a massive surge of graphics cards but I have the opportunity to buy old gtx1080 from a friend. It's not a perfect scenario but what can I do. At least I could use this rig for work while patiently waiting for delivery. It would be my first PC in years, I had only laptops with Intel HD for work and consoles like Switch or PS4. Is this enough for decent 1440p 165hz Gaming? At least when I finally switch to 30XX series card. I am a programmer and I run a lot of VMs so I need ram and CPU, therefore 5950x. Only issues I had/have were finding a GPU (who would have thought), downloading Windows 10 to a flash drive using a Mac (finally gave up and drove to my sisters to use her Windows PC), and dealing with a busted QL120 fan that wouldn't change RPM's no matter what. Not having another CPU, I was worried about having the flash my BIOS in order to use AMD 5000 series, but the Aorus Q-Flash made it SUPER easy. Also not in love with the lighting (blue to pink) on the GPU, but wasn't going to be picky. Still dealing with some hot temps with the 5800x but the more I research the more I see other users having hot temps with this CPU. Benchmarking put me at 90C and I'm running Warzone at around 75C on average. Any tips or advice is welcomed as I am new to ALL of this! Thanks for reading. | Should I cancel this order and build it instead? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:48 PM PST My current machine is a 7700k and a GTX 1080. I use it pretty much exclusively for VR (HTC Vive), but the GPU is also helpful whenever I do a project related to machine learning. My machine has started struggling with the latest VR games, I need to run star wars squadrons on lowest settings to not get sick. I also want to upgrade to the valve index, and hopefully whatever the next generation of VR hardware is after that. It would be nice to have a GPU with tensor cores in it as well. I figured all this justified an upgrade to a machine with a 3080, and I had been looking into ways of getting one until I found and bought this about a week before christmas from ibuypower:
Total retail price: $1805 What I paid: $2067 I got this price due to a $300 christmas sale, 5% promo code, and the RAM was free due to a daily deal. When I made this chart originally I decided that the $250 up charge was worth it since I'm not really interested in the whole building process, but since the 3080 and 5900x are both "pre-order items" it could be a few months before I actually get this machine. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to cancel the order and build it myself. Is there anything on this sheet that I could significantly downgrade at no cost to performace/longevity? If I cancelled and went through the building process do you think I could have my parts in the next couple months? Thanks for any advice. Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:47 PM PST I had built my PC at the beginning of December but I didn't realize that there are literally no GPUs on the market so I rolled with my old GTX 770 2GB while spamming F5 in shops everyday, not only to stumble onto something that is actually available but also at a price that I can pay without having to sell my wife and son to human traffickers. Finally after a month I landed Gigabyte RTX 3070 Vision. Extremally pumped I teared the box apart and started to install it only to found out that... I can't install it. Length was OK for my case but no matter what I did, it would just not fit into PCIE slot. Yup, I thought, after all of this. Busted card. Crooked PCIE... or maybe busted mobo, even better. I tried couple more times, used force, if it breaks so be it (I was pretty pissed). Then I just give up, took the card out and went for the box to pack it and send it back. While putting it into box - guess what, you probably guessed it - there is big, plastic, black protective plug on PCIE connector. | Built my PC (it worked) then upgraded PSU and it doesn't work! Please help! Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:38 AM PST Hi there, I hope this post is OK for /r/buildapc since I'm still 'building' it. TL;DR: I built my first PC 2 weeks ago. Due to the huge shortage of components, I built the PC with an old PSU and old Graphics Card, while waiting for new PSU and GPU to arrive. Installing the new GPU worked no problem. Then when the new PSU arrived, I installed it and now the PC won't boot (won't post, etc.) So that's the short version and here is the long version with details. I decided to build my new PC after seeing the long lead times for online PC builders. I only knew of a couple big names; I'm sure there are other builders that maybe could do it faster. But I was up for the challenge since I'm into tech (even if I'm not good at it) This PC (the old one and new one) are used for Video editing as well as live "webinars" like streaming, but with multiple cameras and microphones connected to capture cards. I purchased all my components on NewEgg, and was really surprised with the entire "OUT OF STOCK" situation! I even had the GPU I wanted to get, go out of stock while it was in my shopping cart, since I was shopping for RAM and a Case! In a matter of 30 min. to an hour, the GPU went out of stock! Anyways, this matters because all of my components shipped from different places and arrived at different times. ESPECIALLY the new PSU and GPU. I didn't want to wait, since there was only a shipping estimate for PSU/GPU and it was another 3 weeks after I got all the other components! So I read some stuff here, and watched some YouTube videos (especially BitWit and Jayz2cents. Hilarious guys!) I built the new PC (with the old PSU and GPU )and it worked great. It posted on the first try. I got everything set up how I wanted, got all my programs installed and was even back to editing some videos (using the old GPU of course) 1) The NEW GPU arrived and of course I was anxious. I got it installed at the PC booted up perfectly and everything ran perfectly. I did some benchmarking and the new GPU is faster than the old GPU, but due to the market supply problem, it still isn't the GPU I eventually want. 2) Two weeks later, the new PSU arrives. I wasn't in a huge hurry for this, since the new PC was working perfectly, including the new GPU. The new PSU was an upgrade: Gold to Platinum and more Wattage. It is also an EVGA brand whereas the old PSU is a Corsair. I didn't think the brand mattered, expect I think I found out a couple of the power connectors are different (as far as each pin--square versus the other shape) My "individually sleeved" Corsair cables did not ALL fit into the new EVGA power supply. (I think the Corsair PSU calls them 6x2PCIe & 4+4 CPU vs EVGA has 2 CPU connections and the rest are called "VGA". The EVGA PSU cables marked "CPU" only fit in the 8-pin CPU slots and NOT in the 8-pin VGA slots. The Corsair power supply does NOT accept the EVGA cables marked "VGA" into the Corsair's PCIe or CPU connections) I guess you all know that already, but that sort of confused me, I thought I was seeing things, so I decided to stop messing with the new PSU over the weekend. Ok so now assume I have the new GPU and new PSU installed, and this is my approximate troubleshooting phase: - I press the power button and nothing. - I realized the motherboard wasn't glowing. (It has some RGB stuff that I never turned off, so the I/O board cover on the motherboard glows and changes color.) - I first thought the new PSU was bad. I did the normal stuff like checking all cables to ensure they were fully connected. - I checked every component connection, including CMOS battery. (RAM sticks, GPU, CPU fan (air cooled), etc. This was pretty much the limit of my knowledge, so I started looking at YouTube videos for everything else. - I turned OFF the EVGA (new PSU) power-saving mode which keeps the fan off at low load, and now the motherboard was 'glowing' so I felt comfortable that at least it was getting power. - The new EVGA PSU came with a tester (to simulate the paperclip test). I used it, and the PSU fan turned on, so the new EVGA PSU works. - I got worried and thought the new GPU got fried, so I swapped in the old GPU. Nothing. - I got more worried and put in the old PSU. Nothing. - I got frantic and tried combinations of New/Old PSU + New/Old GPU and nothing. - I double checked the 2-pin PWR button connection and it IS connected. And when I press the power button, I can hear the PSU make a 'click' but no fans turn on and no POST. - I have NOT done the 'start from scratch' thing where I take out all components one by one and add them back, because I didn't want to take apart the new PC, and because the only thing I changed was the PSU. :( But I will, I guess if I have to. I have my PC connected to a fairly nice UPS, and I wore a static bracelet when working inside the case. (I upgraded to a super-static "Livestrong" bracelet that fights static AND cancer at the same time!) Hehehhe My apologies for the novel. What should I do next? I will take some photos and add them in to this post, but I wanted to type it all out first (and hope that someone out there is a genius and can tell me "Dude, you didn't do __________ !" New PC Stats: Then I added the new PSU: EVGA 1000P2 and this is where it went bad, and wouldn't POST/BOOT/Startup/ The old GPU is an EVGA GTX 1070 Ti. Remember, I built the new PC (minus new GPU and PSU) and it worked -- I was running with the old GPU for a while. Then the new GPU came in, and that worked great too. The only thing missing was the new PSU. It was then when I got the new PSU and hooked it up that I am having problems. I did the new PSU last Friday, and was getting frustrated so I dropped it for the weekend. I was running into power connector issues; I didn't realize different brand PSUs could use slightly different power connectors, and I was going crazy, not knowing if the connectors from Corsair ===> EVGA were different, or if I was going crazy, so that's when I stopped for the weekend. | Prebuilt pc does not have switch on power supply Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:15 AM PST I am replacing the power supply in a prebuilt so that it can handle a better GPU. This is the model of the original one https://www.newegg.com/p/1YT-0002-003X0. However, all of the PSU's that I can order have power switches. I am confused since the prebuilt PC has its own power button. Will a power supply with a switch work? Should it stay on or off? Please let me know. Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:34 AM PST I have been putting off buying that new rig since October because of the new hardware coming and now because nothing is available (and when it is, prices are ridiculous). I'm used to play old game on low settings so I could live with an old GPU but after a quick check, I couldn't find anything readily available at MSRP. Is there something good out there that's worth buying? For CPUs, the situation seems less bad. Sounds like an old Ryzen or going for Intel would work just fine? I'm borrowing my friends GPU until I can get a 3080. Also, PC partpicker says there's a warning on compatibility and as a complete noob i'd appreciate someone explaining it.. it says "Some AMD X570 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vermeer CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions." My build is... | Much Difference Between EVGA 3060 Ti and 3070? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:10 PM PST I'm trying to decide between the EVGA FTW3 3060 Ti and 3070 and did a comparison of the two on EVGA's website. Spec-wise they seem very similar, with the 3070 seemingly only marginally better for $200+ more. For someone that plays games at 1440p/144hz with some 3d modeling on the side would there be much of a noticeable difference between the two cards? I have these two 16 gig kits leftover from gifts and spending, I'm building two budget xomouters for my daughter's. I have a asrock b450m mobo, and a b550 mortar mobo. | What GPU should I buy or should I still wait. Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST I got a 1060 right now. But I noticed troubles in some new and even old games that I can't play on high graphic settings with "enough" fps(I got a 144hz Monitor so I want to have at least about 170 fps) anymore and the 1060 is rather old (about 4-5 years). But I don't know which one I should buy now or if it's better when I still wait (because of the high prices and the out of stock problems). Edit: If I should wait, shoud I wait for a new one to come out (I dont think I will buy a completely new one) so the prices of the other mabe go down or just wait for the stocks to fill up.
