Intel undervolting a thing of the past?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 09:10 AM PST

After having attempted to undervolt a new laptop of mine, with an i5 8250u, it appears that undervolting no longer works, be it in Throttlestop, or Intel XTU. After some research, this appears to be due to a patch for Intel's Plundervolt vulnerability, which came about roughly November of 2019.

If you are currently capable of undervolting, I would suggest you back up your BIOS. Unfortunately in my case, I installed the latest one when setting up my laptop, and it doesn't look like there are archives anywhere of older versions (HP Elitebook 830 G5).

Does this mean that from this point on, there is no undervolting on Intel laptops? This has some pretty major implications due to the thermal restrictions of laptop chassis, and OEM's tendencies to apply unnecessarily high voltages. Taking -100mv+ off the core voltage is common occurrence, along with temperature reductions of 10C, higher performance due to less throttling, quieter fans, and naturally, increased battery life. It's tantalising to know that all of this is hidden behind a software lock.

On a related note, how does this compare on the AMD side? From what I gather, you can't undervolt or use Ryzen Master, but the chips auto-optimise their voltages?

What do you guys make of all this? Will undervolting survive or is it going to become a thing of the past to look back on?
