    Simple Questions - December 26, 2020

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 04:06 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Buyers remorse sometime after building?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 08:02 AM PST

Hey, any one else sometimes think about things like "I could have gotten something better if I had done this" or "I should have waited a bit longer for this to come out"? I finished my build like a month ago, and just realized that if I had gone with the 10400f with 2666 ram instead of 3600 with 3600 ram I could have gotten a 2060 or 5600 xt instead of 1660 super. Well, I was in a bit of a hurry and excited after waiting months for the build, so that was my fault, but anyone else have a similar experience?

Built brand new pc and it's stuttering, even with nothing open

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 07:51 AM PST

    I just built a new PC with 5800X, 16gb DDR4-PC3600, GTX 970, Samsung 980 Pro 1TB

All I have installed so far are the Nvidia drivers and Call of Duty

It has worked fine for a few days but now it 'stutters'... i.e., it seems the FPS is super low (even when not playing COD.

I have an X63 cooling the CPU.

Here are the temps (in picture).

What do you think could be the issue?

What kind of cable is this?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 10:26 AM PST

Right now I'm replacing my brother's old case with a new one, and it comes with a bunch of fans and an rgb fan hub, but it has this sata cable I have not seen before. The motherboard is super old so it might not be able to use it? I'll show you photos.

Rx 5600 xt pulse be low FPS

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 07:59 AM PST

Hello. I've got a new RX 5600 xt Pulse BE for christmas, but the FPS are not what i've expected. I've the same or less fps than with my old RX 580. For example on AC Valhalla benchmark, on high, I got 55 fps in 1080p, same score as the RX 580. I've tried new drivers, older drivers, make a fresh install of Windows, nothing working. Did you have any ideas ?

PS: Sorry for my bad english

What would be a good replacement for my dying GTX 1080 for below £400?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:20 PM PST

As the title says my GTX 1080 is currently dying and I'm looking for a replacement GPU that doesn't break the bank. Currently looking at an RTX 2060 since I've found one in stock but I'd like to see some other opinions on it.

    How fucked am I

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 12:55 PM PST

Hey, so yesterday I got a 3080 as a gift and installed it in place of my previous 2080 super. Full specs: 3080, ryzen 3900, 16 gb 3600 ram, 750 power supply, tuff x570 plus motherboard. It also has a Wi-Fi card if that matters

So install went fine, played some games. Today I watched some videos, nothing demanding. Went to eat, and I come back to a burning smell coming from my computer. It's shut off and is not turning back on. I took out the power cable and that's how I've left it. The question is, what broke and what do I replace? I'm assuming it's the motherboard that's fried, because when the computer was plugged in the power supply indicator was lit up but no motherboard lights were working. Any clues?

Brand new to building a PC. Please help?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 08:21 AM PST

Hello all! I'm brand new to this community. I've been looking into building a PC for a couple of months now but after doing a lot of research I'm still stuck on where to start. I really want to make the best budget build I can possibly make since I don't have much money. I'm a student and this is a hobby I wanna be able to partake in whilst being able to upgrade as I get the substantial finances for it. For now I use an old laptop and I think it's time for me to treat myself. Can someone please help me at least get a good start on how to make a budget gaming setup? I've done tons of research but everything I've looked into I'm not sure of. I just don't wanna waste any of my really hard earned money. I don't have any close friends to talk to about it that are into this hobby as well, so I'm all on my own. Thanks for the help, and thanks for being such a welcoming community!

It's possible I could have touched the motherboard when I was pulling my hand away but I'm not sure. Is this it for me chief?

    First build troubleshooting: CPU issue

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 10:30 AM PST

    I'm building my first PC.

    MSI B5550-A Pro Motherboard Ryzen 7 3700X
Corsair Vengance LPX 3600 Mghz 2 x 8 Lian Li Lan cool 205 MSI Geforce GT710 (while I wait to get a better card) Deepcool RF120m x 5 EVGA Bronze 650W B5 Crucial P2 500GB SSD Wifi Card - Ubit 144 Hz Sceptre monitor w/HDMI

We are troubleshooting booting the PC.
On the first boot, all of the Deepcool and CPU stock cooler fans came on, only the CPU cooler had RGB lights. The monitor indicated no signal. The EX Debug LED had the CPU LED light up.

In trouble shooting, so far we have… Reseated the CPU power cable on the motherboard, Reseated the RAM, Reseated the GPU, Removed one RAM stick, leaving in one in the 2nd channel from CPU, Removed the Wifi Card, Added Windows Boot USB in the slot right under the Bios Flash button, and tried hitting F11 a few times, Removed CMOS battery and replaced for 5 minutes

The EX Debug LED still has the CPU LED light up.

I think the next step is to remove the CPU Cooler, remove the CPU - check the pins. Then remove the thermal paste. Then reseat the CPU, then add thermal paste, then reconnect he CPU cooler and test.

Given it will take a few days thermal paste, I wanted to check to see if anyone has any other ideas for troubleshooting. Thanks!

    Cube mid atx cases?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:29 PM PST

I'm currently looking at the Corsair carbide air 540, I'm not sure if there are any cases that are better airflow wise or if this case is still solid compared to other cases.

    Endless Bsods

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:14 PM PST

Hey guys, I need help. I built a pc a week ago and since then it's been having issues. It keeps freezing up then flashing a bsod. The most common is "critical process died", but occasionally "memory management error" or something to do with the kernel pops up. I've tried almost everything, running sfc sacnnow, running storage checks, reinstalling all driver, down clocking my ram to 3200, doing bios updates, yet nothing seems to work. Is there anything else I could be missing? Thanks in advance.

    Clueless and ready to build

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 01:10 PM PST

Good evening all you PC building enthusiasts! I'm looking to build my own PC soon and I am clueless on where to starts, I know the basics but still not enough...

Basically I am going to build a PC that is primarily used for creating music with softwares such as Ableton and I'll also be using it for gaming too

If you where to build ONLY the tower and everything inside to make it powerful enough to run a lot of large softwares (except for any SSD/HDD) what parts would you buy?

Let's say the price range is 1000-1500 What would you make?

    Thanks people!

2 Microcenters in the area and for the day after Christmas they got me sooooo close.

I probably should have known better than try to update a 10 yr old PC the day after xmas, but I figured with 2 microcenters within 30 min of me, I should be able to find something, right? Apparently, a couple of 3070s were released today and everything left on the shelf was picked through immediately leaving zero cards in stock. got me most of the way though.

Need help finding a power supply for a new build.

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 12:58 PM PST

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/tN44PV

I have attached a list of all the parts I'm going to be ordering and I already have a small SSD and Ram cards from a previous build. I was wondering what kind of power supplies you guys would recommend for this build. It doesn't have to be a completely modular power supply, but I would like to avoid ketchup and mustard cables in the power supply if possible.

    Thanks in advance!

Installing a new SSD for my OS, should I clone my old HDD onto it or make a bootable usb and do a fresh install?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 12:42 PM PST

I recently got a new SSD to put my OS on, it has enough room if I wanted/needed to clone my whole HDD onto it. I was going to do that but then I learned of doing a fresh install with a bootable flash drive. Which one of these would be the easiest and safest to do? Id like to keep the preferred settings that I have on my pc right now but I could set them up again if need be.

    Thanks!

PC won't boot when TV HDMI connected

    Posted: 26 Dec 2020 06:15 AM PST

A new build with x570 Msi Mag Tomahawk Wifi and RTX 3070 won't post when TV is connected. The VGA led light on mobo is on. If I disconnect HDMI, wait till it posts and then reconnect it - all works. Other monitors, both with DisplayPort and HDMI posts fine.

BIOS is the newest and I am certain I am putting HDMI into graphics card.

I have tried turning off fast boot in Windows as somebody had this issue resolved by it, but it didn't help. I am not sure what else I could try.
