    Simple Questions - December 10, 2020

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 04:06 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Posts that consist of nothing but handmade-by-OP "performance hierarchy" graphs with absolutely no indication of where the data for them came from should not be allowed on this sub (especially when the charts have extremely obvious errors right off the bat!)

    Title says it all...

The 1660 Super is not faster than the 1660 Ti, by the way (and really, I thought everyone on Earth already knew that).

If your PC is running like crap check your fan/pump profiles.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2020 04:25 PM PST

    I've had my computer together for about two years. I7-8700k @5.01ghz and a evga 1080ti SC2 21:9 120hz 1440p monitor.

Recently my games began to run terrible. The other night it reached a tipping point for me and I decided to look through settings and make sure I had things optimized.

I opened up intel tuning utility because once before some updates had wiped my overclock settings. Ram and CPU were all set correctly but I saw that I was hitting thermal throttling which I never hit under load.

I opened up SIV (gigabytes fan program) and evga X1. My fan profiles for my cpu and gpu had gotten switched to stealth/quiet profiles at some point either accidently by me or via program updates. I made some custom aggressive performance profiles and performance went from 10-60 fps in warzone to 80-120 fps.

I had been living with this for probably weeks or months assuming that game updates were making the game run slower.

Tl;dr - if your computer isn't running to your expectations check the fan profiles and that your ram/cpu overclock haven't been lost.

First PC build Feedback please :)

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 08:27 AM PST

    Hello Everyone.

First and foremost Thank you all. My questions have been plenty and you all have helped tremendously :)

I am a mechanic by trade and bored as hell due to COVID.

So far during covid I have:

Built about 15 bang bangs :)

Pulled the engine and trans out of my car and stroked the engine, big CAM and built the trans. LSX

Several projects around the house. Happy Wife, Happy Life...

My 9 year old has a pre built that I am guilty of buying for him last X mas.

It was crashing and thus I started to look into components and found it was a very low end build and fairly outdated.

Looking back I'm not sure what I expected for 600.00 but I guess a little more than what we had received. Lesson learned..

He mainly plays Fortnite, COD and BeamNG Drive thus this is what I put together for him below.

Hoping he is excited as I am come X mas morning :)

    Ryzen 5 5600X

    MSI Ventus2X RTX 3060TI

    Lian Li case (Used)

    6 Thermaltake RGB Fans

    MSI B550 Gaming edge MOBO

    Corsair Vengeance 2x8 3600mhz

    Samsung 1tb NVME 2.0

EVGA Super nova 750w 80 cert (Purchased used came with those extra red/black cablemod wires)

Here is what I would do differently.

NOT BUY a used case. As you can see I'm missing a couple screws in the MOBO.

New screws and stands are on the way but backordered like everything else.

I do know both sets of fans are pulling are out. I have 9 all white RGB fans on order. I will be bringing fresh air in from the side and bottom and then out through the top.

I will be upgrading the CPU cooler as well.

Again thank you all as this would not be possible without the help of this page...

    My Evga 980ti Caught fire

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 04:14 AM PST

2 days ago I was playing skyrim and my pc just randomly shut off and would not turn back on. It just seemed like a dead pc. Motherboard would have the power light on. But it just wouldn't turn on. I did some googling and some threads said to wait an hour and then try again.

The next day I unplugged all peripherals from my computer and tried to turn it back on again. Luckily it turned on, I could see error codes on my motherboard which I couldn't see the night before, then like 2 seconds later, I saw a flame next to my gpu, and smoke coming out. Then my pc shut off. I didn't try to turn it back on again.

I was taking out parts to see what actually caught fire and noticed a black mark next to my gpu and a horrible smell. I took it out and tried to turn on my computer and it worked. I checked system info, I still have 16gb of ram so my ram is okay. My cpu seems to be okay. I'm just using integrated graphics now.

My main concern is what went wrong? I somehow got incredibly lucky and managed to order a 3070 and I don't want to put it into my computer without knowing what caused my last gpu to fail. Could it be a psu issue? Mb issue? Pcie slot issue? Or just a gpu issue?

    My parts:

    EVGA 980ti Sc Intel i7 6700k Kingston 16gb ddr4 memory Thermaltake 850W 80+ gold psu Gigabyte Z170X-UD5

TLDR: GPU caught fire, I took it out and now pc works. But what went wrong? I want to know before putting in a new gpu.

U can watch all the YouTubers, (I did) but won't get to know some trivials. 1. The strongest man competition is to decide who is the only one alive who can plug in the 24pin in a single go. 2. There are noises that sound like you break something, but you don't. 3. The reason to buy a fancy case(not necessarily rgb) is to have space.

    Anyway I managed to put Ryzen 5 5600x B550m bazooka Msi 3060ti ventus 2x oc 2*8 gb 3200-16 hyper fury Evga bq 650w 1gb hdd 240gb ssd

In a less than 30usd case (zalman s2) decent case but not so much space. No pic, because can't make a good one.

Rtx 2070 super ryzen 5 3600 not performing as expected.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 11:55 AM PST

I've heard many examples of people running cyberpunk and black ops cold war with higher framerates with builds similar to mine, however I struggle to hit 60fps on the lowest settings on each of these. 1440p or 1080p.

I don't know what it is, I'm using the stock fan with the ryzen 5 3600, and my mobo is a msi thomahawk max.

    Might return 3060ti

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 12:27 PM PST

Hey guys. I came from a Radeon 5600xt. Switched to asus rog strix 3060 Ti. I was expecting to have 2080 similar performance yet I'm getting barely better performance than my old 5600xt. I've been reading and researching about the low gpu usage issue and a LOT of 3000 series owners are facing low gpu usage issues and low fps. I am talking about 115-130 fps in warzone and i used to have 110 with my 5600xt lol. GTA 90 fps. To be honest, I feel like nvidia ripped me off by selling me something that looked so good on paper yet not a big jump from older GPU's. I've asked help in many subs and forums yet no one had any solution. If you go on the nvidia forums you'll see how many people are complaining about low gpu usage and even people with 3080'a and 3070's... I don't know, i might wait a bit to see if nvidia will do something about it otherwise I am gonna have to look into other options...

1660 Super - Top Screen flicker on 144hz Monitor.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 12:12 PM PST

Hi guys, Am running a PC with Ryzen 5600x and Gigabyte 1660 Super dual OC GPU with a 144hz 1080p Monitor.

I am experiencing occasional black / white flickers in the top of my screen. (IDK if it's artifact). This is happening under idle and light loads such as browser sessions, Office, etc.

Note that this doesn't happen during GPU intensive activities such as games.

I saw people posting similar issue with 1660 Super in few forums such as Linux tech tips, Nvidia, reddit, etc.

From my understanding, the issue is due to the GPU under clocking all the way down and fails to provide proper output to high refresh rate monitors.

So far the only fix is changing the performance mode to max performance under Nvidia control panel.

I should add that this is not Monitor / Cable issue since I changed both of them to isolate this to GPU. I also have freesync disabled on monitor and gsync is also disabled.

    My Questions :

Is every 1660S user experiencing this? Or this is happening only to a few set of people. 1660S users kindly comment so that I can understand more about this.

Setting my GPU to max performance seems to turn up core and memory clocks all the way up. Does this degrade my GPU's Life / Quality? Am expecting to squeeze 5 years outta my GPU without much loss in hardware quality.

Is this a Driver issue or a GPU's "OC" issue? Since everyone posting this issue is using a OCd version of the card.

If this is a driver issue, Is Nvidia aware of this? Is this gonna be fixed?

Thanks for reading through this Post. Kindly comment if you want to help me out or want to add some information.

Please don't comment if you don't know what you are talking about since this may confuse people with similar issues.

    Thanks a lot again. 🙂

    Gift for gamer boyfriend...

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 08:44 AM PST

Sorry for the rambling but.... Hello all I'm a noob when it comes to gaming but trying to understand it better for my sweet little gamer bf. he currently has a gaming pc that's falling apart and a PS4, he's saving up to build his own PC. Is there anything or any part that I could get him to help? Or does it all revolve around what type of GPU and processor he wants? I'm not positive on exactly how he wants to build it. But I really would love to give him a gift that has to do with gaming because I know he would really appreciate it.

Should the Power supply fan run all the time?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 03:03 PM PST

I recently got a new PC build and kind of naïve when it comes to the new components, i was checking my PSU fan and it's not working and I'm used to be aware that PSU fans should always run (that was back in 2010 when i used to have an old PC) however this one isn't running but the PSU is not hot at all. It's Aorus p850w and is has a label called "smart fan". Any help would be appreciated 😊.

Computer Does Not POST After Playing Cyberpunk

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 12:14 AM PST

EDIT: Removing one of my sticks of RAM did the trick. Turns out one of my sticks went bad. I also noticed once I removed this RAM stick that my GPU fans no longer rev to 100% anymore and the time to POST is significantly shorter now. Not sure if that has anything to do with it?

Thank you to everyone for the reply's I really appreciate it!

    Hi everyone,

I started play Cyberpunk 2077 today and was playing it fine for about 2 hours when I left my computer for around 10 minutes and came back to a black screen. My keyboard and mouse also had no lights on and the computer was completely unresponsive.

I restarted my computer and now the computer will not POST. I also noticed my GPU fans are stuck at max speed.

A couple things to note are

    • On a normal startup, my GPU fans would instantly rev up to 100% for about a second and instantly rev down. Now the fans are staying at 100%.
    • The LED on the motherboard is orange, but there is nothing about a orange LED in the manual.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Compact PC cases with decent airflow suggestions?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 11:59 AM PST

Lately, I've been trying to stray away from tower design PC cases and been wanting to get smaller and more travel friendly cases with decent airflow. I bought a cheap MicroATX case but found out my temps were running 10 degrees celsius higher because it had no airflow on top of it.

I was inspired by a post from PCMR where he made a really tight case mostly for travel uses. Any suggestions like that

Does every little sound your PC makes drives you crazy, or is it just me?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 12:20 PM PST

I built a PC for the first time a couple months ago and so far its running great.

That being said, I have become EXTREMELY conscious of every little sound the PC makes. Before I built it, I was using a prebuilt PC and never payed much attention to the fans, or rattling, or shaking, or whirring, or any kind of sounds a PC might make.
I'm actually not sure if i'm just easily agitated by noises, or if these noises aren't normal.

I've probably spent hours just sitting on the floor staring into the PC trying to locate which components are making which sounds. Additional hours googling what these noises are, what are the causes, is it normal, etc.

I even took the HDD out of my PC and replaced it with and SSD solely because of the disc spinning.

I'm curious if anyone else is in the same boat as me.

From how many hz do you start needing Gsync/Freesync?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 06:26 AM PST

I'm thinking of getting a humble 1080p 75hz monitor, and a lot of people say that I'd want Gsync. But those people are pretty intense gamers who have 144/240hz monitors and I don't know if I'll have as much fps fluctuation as them.

The games I'll probably play are stuff like Minecraft and Apex. Should I actually consider Gsync? Or should I even look into monitors with higher hz?

HELP WITH CPU and GPU Combo

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 01:30 PM PST

Hey everyone I'm building a new pc and am a little tight on budget so I have 2 options

    1)Go for RYZEN 5 3600 with RTX 3070 2)Go for Ryzen 7 3700X/R5 5600X with RTX 3060Ti

My main goals with the system are:- 1) Playing games on 1080p with high fps and great graphics (high fps is priority after that I want highest possible graphics 150 around) WHILE streaming in 1080p

2 Playing Games on 4k highest detail possible Not streaming

Personally I want the first combo but some people are saying R5 3600 will bottleneck while streaming even after using NVENC

I need you guys' opinion on this will it bottleneck or should I go with RYZEN 5 3600 and RTX 3070
