The best performing and quietest PC fans I've found Posted: 08 Dec 2020 08:52 PM PST I had posted this to PCMR, but figured I'd post it here too if it can help anyone. I've got a new build going on and wanted to get the best fans I could for my case and radiator. As well as just get up to date on the best fans in 2020 / 2021. I'm looking for the best performing/quietest fan out there. Noctua's really known for this which is why they're so popular. The problem is that there's so many fans to chose from and so much information out there. There's also some decent misinformation too. Like some of Noctua's older fan designs like the NF-S12A don't really hold up anymore. Yet they're still so expensive and the poopy brown color still exists. So, here's what I've found: *Again, this is the most powerful fan that is ALSO the quietest it can be. Also not looking at RGB fans here. - In general, it seems having static pressure is always better. There's lots of obstructions in PC cases, from grills, to cages, mesh, radiators, etc... It also seems that the air that gets heated up in your case also makes airflow fans and static pressure fans perform worse. But airflow fans usefulness degrades much faster. This means that airflow fans which perform better unobstructed could perform worse than static pressure fans when heat gets into the mix, even without obstructions. (There's a post here from buildapc linked down below that goes into some math) - The Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM is the best fan you can buy right now (Whether using it as a radiator fan or case fan). But it's pricey. - The Arctic P12 & P14 are the best overall fans. That includes price to performance. Honestly, these things are so evenly matched to the NF-A12x25 it's hard to recommend the Noctua's considering the Arctic's are insanely cheaper. Getting down to $7-$10 a fan. If you're doing a huge build with 10 fans that's the difference of $300 or $70-$100 for basically the same performance. That's if you can find any to buy now anyways. - The Thermaltake Toughfan 12 is a blatant rip off of the NF-A12x25 but it really matches the performance and comes in black, and it's a bit cheaper. But Thermaltake's kinda a crappy company. - The NF-A12x25/P12/P14/Toughfan 12 perform so well on a radiator that they're even slightly better than or compare to something like a Noctua AF-A14 which is a 140mm fan. - There's also some other good fan contenders out there from Deepcool, Nidec, Scythe (Scythe in particular for case fans)* but offerings from companies like Corsair/BeQuiet/Silverstone are lagging a bit behind (Unless you have other plans, like aesthetics). Honestly with the Arctic P12/P14 and Noctua NF-A12x25 you're pretty set. - In extreme cases/niche use cases you could probably see quite a big difference in temperatures from really bad fans to the best ones. But you can very easily see 3x cash savings getting something like the Arctic P12 over the NF-A12x25 and see barely any performance differences. - Some people like to make a stink about the "type" of noise fans make, not just the loudness of the noise. And it's true some have more of a mechanical whine to them, or a higher pitch. But the Artic P12 and NF-A12x25 seem like they don't suffer from that. TLDR: - NF-A12x25 is the best performing/quietest fan. Even vs many 140mm fans. But it's pricey. - Arctic P12 & P14 are the best overall fans. It can get as cheap as 7 bucks and has basically all the performance of the NF-A12x25. These also compete against many 140mm fans. *EDIT - There seems to be a decent hum for the Arctic fans at certain RPM's which can be a bit annoying. Not really a deal breaker but definitely something to consider and listen to for yourself. Upgraded from a Ryzen 3 1300x to a Ryzen 5 3600! Posted: 08 Dec 2020 05:23 PM PST So happy I was able to get this CPU for around retail during this busy PC shopping season. On my 1300x, I'd be CPU limited in games like Modern Warfare and Battlefield, and there's no way I could play games with anything running in the background without massive stutters. Now games are buttery smooth with no problem playing music, downloading games, or having discord in the background. My GTX 1060 now maxes out most games on my 75Hz monitor. Going from a 4-core to a 6-core is definitely worth it! [link] [comments]
PC randomly restarts, struggles to turn on Posted: 09 Dec 2020 09:48 AM PST Troubleshooting Help:PC Parts
All items were purchased in August (PC built same time). Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. This all started about 1 and a half weeks ago. Most mornings when I turned on my power supply, the PC fans would run but the bios wouldn't boot. Sometimes I would just restart the PC by holding the power button and it would work. Other mornings, I'd get it to boot only after unplugging and replugging both RAM sticks. Problems started to get slightly worse on Monday, when my PC started to randomly restart. The restarts would occur when I'm not doing anything intensive either. I'd be doing something light, the screens would go black (assuming an instant shut off), then the PC would reboot. Sometimes on restart (both manual and unexpected), the PC would fail to restart, then try again and successfully boot. These restarts are very sparse, so debugging this is super difficult. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I've so far
Post relevant photos of build/parts here. I saw this screen a lot. Provide any additional details you wish below. Two things I did with my PC before all this started:
Other info:
Edit: Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I've been able to narrow it down to either the PSU or the MOBO touching the back of the case using the info posted. Will update later if the mobo was the issue. [link] [comments]
Get 8 year old pc ready for Cyberpunk 2077 Posted: 09 Dec 2020 10:15 AM PST So, my brother has a prebuild pc he bought back in 2012 or something like that. He has only ever upgraded it once, getting a new graphics card in 2016, a 1060. The specs are the following Mobo: Unknown RAM: 8GB of ddr3 CPU: Intel i5-3570K GPU: Asus Dual GeForce GTX 1060 OC 6 GB PSU: 420W no 80+ cert His CPU is cooled by an AIO system that has never been touched since the day it was bought. I keep telling him that it's going to burst open and fry his whole system, but he doesn't seem phased by it. He really wants to play Cyberpunk 2077, and has chosen to upgrade his system, however he has limited funds. As I see it, he has two options with his funds.
He has about 4000dkk to spend, you can use this site for price references https://www.proshop.dk/, if you wish to recommend something not listed above. He will have enough money for upgrading the rest of the system by summer, so spending 4000 on lesser upgrades on the entire system is not an option. Which upgrade would yield him the best performance in Cyberpunk 2077? [link] [comments]
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X reaching heat levels of 90C° while playing Posted: 09 Dec 2020 11:32 AM PST Relevant parts: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO MSI B450M MORTAR MAX- mATX Hey, got a computer last year for RDR2 which since then has had a lot of problems with heating, when gaming the CPU reaches levels of 70-90C° depending on the game, this was something i thought was quite normal until looking into it recently, my room gets very hot while playing and it would be great if my computer lasted for quite sometime instead of breaking down from the heat issues eventually, does anyone know what i could do to fix this issue? My CPU is a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, my cooler is a Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO and the motherboard is a MSI B450M MORTAR MAX- mATX. Is this a common issue with these components or have i done something wrong? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Dec 2020 07:30 AM PST I've just been handed a EVGA 1060 superclocked 6GB card from someone who has upgraded. I am already using an MSI Armor RX 570 8GB card. The comparisons online suggest that the 1060 card is superior apart from the obvious memory differences. Is it worth me swapping them out? If it makes any difference, I am using a 144hz monitor with freesync. Other specs: Ryzen 5 1600 16GB (2x8GB) 2666mhz dual channel ram [link] [comments]
3700x - Upgrading Cooler - AIO vs. Air Cooler Posted: 09 Dec 2020 11:26 AM PST I currently have a Ryzen 3700x and GTX 3080. The CPU has the stock Wraith air cooler. My case can fit up to a 280mm radiator and up to a 160mm tall air cooler. I am stuck trying to decide between going for an upgraded air cooler, or purchasing an AIO. My research/choices have ended up with the below list: Air Cooling:
Water Cooling:
Though there could be others at a similar price range you can recommend. My main consideration is noise - ideally I want something quieter than the stock 3700x cooler, which I can hear while watching YouTube etc. Obviously better thermal performance would be great too, as my CPU can get up to 75-80*c during gaming. For gaming, I'm not as concerned about noise, as I typically wear a headset. From watching a bunch of reviews, it seems that the general consensus is that the Noctua aircooler would be much quieter and last longer, whereas the AIO's are going to be louder (pump noise?) and have a much shorter lifespan. Plus if an AIO breaks, you're components can be ruined very quickly. This is my case set up at present: https://i.imgur.com/TPYtDVu.png So what do you recommend for me? Posted: 09 Dec 2020 10:43 AM PST I have seemed to go overboard and get 6 fans and stacked 2 on top of each other, somehow I was told it will decrease rpms and air flow but now I don't get above 61c on gpu and everything else is cool, my tempered glass panel doesn't even get hot now use to be pretty hot, am I wrong? Posted: 09 Dec 2020 10:14 AM PST I made a custom build from a well known company, and one of the things I did was purchase 2 SSD's. the first m.2 SSD is 500GB and I want that for the OS and drivers etc, the second m.2 is 2TB and that's for my games. Will they automatically put the OS on my 1st m.2 which is the one I want it on, or will I need to call them and specifically ask them to put it on the 500GB one? (which is the first m.2) [link] [comments]

Can someone help a dad pick a good, compatible upgrade to give as a present? Posted: 09 Dec 2020 04:30 AM PST Can someone help a dad pick a good, compatible upgrade to give as a present? My son built his first gaming PC in 2019 on a budget. I don't know a ton about building but I'm trying to learn. I'd like to spend a few hundred ($300 - $400 maybe?) to get him some upgrades. What's the most bang for the buck upgrade? CPU? GPU? I want to make sure that whatever I get is compatible and doesn't end up being unusable for him. Looking at his current build below, what should I spend my money on? His primary computer use is gaming (Valorant is the only name I know, but I'm sure there are others) Thanks for any help.

Gaming on a 144 hz monitor with a 60 hz display laptop Posted: 09 Dec 2020 05:50 AM PST So I am planning on buying an HP Envy 15, 4k touchscreen OLED laptop but I am aware that it only has a 60 hz display. Which graphics card should I choose? Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:51 PM PST Hi reddit. I'm between the RX 5500XT and the GTX 1660 Super. The thing is, each one has benefits for me but I'm not sure which one would be better. I like the 8GB vram on the Radeon and the fact that my monitor has FreeSync (it's a basic 75hz LG which I will eventually upgrade). On the other hand, I could spend a little more on the Nvidia (and judging from benchmarks it performs better) but since it's only 6gb vram I don't know if it will be enough. I could really use your help. Thanks! PS: The current parts of my build wouldn't bottleneck neither of those graphics cards. [link] [comments]
Bought the new rtx 3070 and after installing it every game is blurry Posted: 09 Dec 2020 06:17 AM PST I got the msi gaming x trio rtx 3070 and every game I tested is blurry on high settings, I had 1070 before and I didn't uninstall the drivers but I downloaded the rtx 3070 drivers , and even in some games The FPS does not improve for example in rd2 I get around 60 high setting on 1080p is that normal? Did I plug something wrong in the installation? I have an i5 9600k cpu if someone can help me please! [link] [comments]
RX 480 8GB not displaying on monitor. Posted: 09 Dec 2020 10:42 AM PST Hi guys, I recently upgraded my graphics card from the AMD R7 370 4GB to the RX 480 8GB. When I tried to install the new GPU nothing was coming up on the screen, it just remained blank. When I plugged the other one back in, everything was working fine. The fan on RX 480 is spinning but nothing is being displayed on the monitor. My specs are: Intel i5 4460 MSI H81-P33 8gb ram 1tb HHD. (I'm not sure if that helps?) I'm using a HDMI to VGA converter as my monitor is VGA. Any advice on how to get it working? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Low-end Intel is a better value than low-end AMD Posted: 09 Dec 2020 01:10 PM PST For now at least, look at the prices of an r3 3100 (which is supposed to be under $100) vs the price of an i5 10400 which greatly outperforms it. Current state of lower-end pc building is horrible. When's the last time we got a gpu under $200 that isnt comparable to an rx 580, which is a 3 year old REFRESH of an even OLDER card? Thoughts on exhaust fan underneath GPU to aid in cooling Posted: 09 Dec 2020 02:21 PM PST So I've got my rig fully up and going and it's running like a dream. Zen 3 5600x, P600S case, 1080TI, Scythe Fuma 2 cooler, and I got some more arctic 140mm PWM fans to increase the air flow. This is my layout and it's working fairly well. https://imgur.com/UZ2PlLj Right now the CPU is cooling amazing and maybe hitting 60C in gaming and a little above that in testing. It's cool to the touch under any work load and the exhaust coming straight from it is maybe what you could consider slightly warmer than ambient. Now the GPU on the other hand runs about 67C, but the backplate and exhaust is very hot to the touch and very slow moving meaning it's just sitting around soaking up heat rather than moving cooler air into the GPU. One thing I've noticed is that by the time the air reaches the back of the case it's slowed down significantly, which makes sense after all. But underneath the GPU where the GPU is getting clean cold air that really only the first two of the three fans are actually pulling cold air, by the third fan the air is just recirculated from earlier in the GPU cooling. This also results in a very low velocity pocket of very hot air that slowly exits through the PCI expansion slots but generally just stays there before possibly being picked up by the final GPU fan. My thought is if I have a 60mm fan underneath the GPU I could draw more of that cool air to the back of the case meaning that all three fans are getting cooler air, cooler air to the GPU means cooler GPU. I know that I really wouldn't gain much if anything. But has anyone done something like this? I feel like this would be a really common thing in any front fed cases [link] [comments]

3090 FE in a Micro Case (tight squeeze) Posted: 09 Dec 2020 05:30 AM PST
gallery: https://imgur.com/a/FqRLE0a Coming from a gtx 970 this has been quite the upgrade. Having been anticipating the 3000 series for a while I primitively bought most these parts ahead of the launch, thinking, "I'll just get the top end card and it should fit fine" (how naïve). By nvidia's own measurements the 3090 FE measures 313mm long, and my case's reported maximum gpu length was 300mm. At first I though all hope was lost, but then I did some of my own measurements and figured it would probably be possible. I took a dumb $1600 bet on it and miraculously I was right. However, it was no easy feat, I wouldn't recommend anyone else try it unless you don't mind a missing bottom front fan. It is so tight that you will need to take out your ram first because you have to slide it in the case at a 45 degree angle before fanangling it down past the front fans with what seems like negative clearance. But in the end, I'm really happy with the result, it runs and looks great. Here's hoping I'll never have to take it out 😠[link] [comments]
