    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Built my own computer, everything has been working fine but i just plugged my dead ipad in to charge it and the computer shut down.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 03:03 AM PST

Details about the build: - MSI MEG x570 amd motherboard - amd ryzen 7 3700x (8 core processor) - evga geforce rtx 2070 super gfx card - seasonic prime tx-750 watt power supply - idk if ram is important here but its 2 32gigs of gskills somethin or other. - Be quiet case, be quiet cpu cooler. - windows 10

The ipad is a 2018 ipad pro. it's big.

I've been using the computer for like a week but i've never tried to charge my ipad with it.

If I plug my ipad into any of the usb ports on the back of the computer, the computer just turns off.

If i plug it into a port at the top I get a notification that says "power surge on the usb port unknown usb device more power than the port can supply"

Pretty sure all the usb ports are USB 3.1 or 3. i know there are some 2's somewhere but i don't think those are the ones i'm plugging into.

So like... did I screw something up here or can i just not plug in my ipad to this computer without it overloading it?

Related note- everything has been working fine- games and music/film stuff works ok but how do i know that all the stuff is plugged into the right places and stuff? i don't know if there are supposed to be any like fancy LEDs. I kinda hope not, but I don't honestly know how to check my work on this thing. I'm not a scientist. Pretty sure my ram is right- i followed the instructions but... ya know. clearly i may have screwed something up.

Rule 15: If you don't know what you are talking about STFU.

New users are unable to differentiate good from bad advice. You could seriously destroy someone's PC or cost them needless expenses.

Bring me up to speed on the last 10 years

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 08:59 AM PST

I'm not a total layman. I built a machine many years ago and it was top of the line. It's been at least ten years and I haven't paid any attention to anything. So I have a few questions.

SSDs: Since they're so cheap these days, how are you using them? Are they all around HDD replacements? Or are people using them for specific tasks, like booting or games.

GPUs: Does anybody have like an infographic of the product families? They have such convoluted naming schemes.

Games: it would make sense because of competitive gaming. Do gamers just have higher standards? I used to think that 30 fps was like the minimum for playable. Did that change?

And are AAA games equal to the hardware? Are they actually utilizing all the horsepower or are they catering to lower end machines and consoles?

Big sweeping innovations: I loved learning about how AMD CPUs are broadly surpassing intel in the space of a single generation. Have there been any other disruptive moments over the past 10 years?

My mom wanted to surprise me but...

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 01:07 PM PST

Last week I was discussing with my mom about my PC, and mentioned that it's good enough for me but it lacks some RAM. Then she wanted to surprise me and actually bought me some RAM even if I didn't ask her. Then today she came home with these beasts. Picture of RAM

Yes, it is 2 sticks of 16 mb RAM, 16 fricking MB

Help a lonely guy with Aspergers fix my Pc so hes not lonely all christmas

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 06:21 AM PST

    ASUS ROG Strix B450-F

    Ryzen 3800X

    MSI GTX 1080 Armor OC

Corsair RMi 850W, bought back in February but got put into the PC with the new CPU and Mobo back in May.

    HyperX Fury 2666MHz 2x8 GB

Windows 10, but its kinda fucky as it seems like it was motherboard bound but still worked when i switched CPU and Motherboard (used to have Intel I5 7600 and intel mobo i cant remember) i changed back in May

    ———————————————————————

    What happened:

I was playing World of Tanks and everything was fine. Was going to play WoW with friends but suddenly 1 min into WoW it turned itself off and restarted instantly. I get right into the Log In screen, no boot screen.

Tried WoW again and it happened again.

Tried Forza as Forza is installed on an SSD and WoW on an HDD, happened again.

Tried World of Tanks, got in a game and it happened again.

I ran RAM test and showed it was working fine.

    CPU stress test nothing happened.

GPU stress test and the second it started it turned itself off. The 2nd time it didnt and ran fine, started WoW and played for 5mins before it happened again.

I monitored temps and everything was fine, the CPU got up to 85C when every core was running at 100% during the stress test, which NEVER happens in games anyways. Stock AMD cooler.

    Things i have tried:

    Windows Ram Test, detected nothing

    CPU Stress Test, nothing happened

    Updated GPU drivers

    Every cable is sitting snugly

GPU stress test 2 time. First time it instantly crashed and restarted, 2nd time the test ran fine, temps was fine, played WoW for 5 mins and it restarted again.

Then it restarts again but gers stuck in a restarting loop for a minute before Windows decides it cant launch and i get a choice between tools, but again the windows is kinda fucky and the tools wont work.

I think it might be the GPU as its the oldest part in the PC with the RAM and HDD, the HDD is just for big games though. Also the GPU is the cheap MSI version, Armor OC.

It could be Windows but it makes no sence why it would be now and now back in May.

I really hope we can fix this. I have Aspergers Disorder and the things thar come with it (anxiety and depression) , i dont have any IRL friends where i live, all my best friends live on the other side of the country, this was my main way of communicating and playing with them. I have nothing to do and im scared and lonely.

Please help me. I am out of ideas.

I dont want to be alone and lonely all christmas. The only GPU's in stock are 2070Supers and 2080Supers at the same max price as before. And i cant afford them anyways.

Will any components of my old PC be reusable after the PSU gave way?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 01:02 AM PST

So I have my old PC - Core 2 Duo, 4GD DDR2, 180GB + 250GB which I basically keep around for any potential USB killers, Virus laden pen drives, Trying out dubious software, software trials, etc.

Today, I was decluttering so I attached two Old DVD Drives to this PC to check if they work (one SATA and one IDE), suddenly the SATA Power Connector of the DVD Drive started giving out smoke. I checked the entire setup and the IDE Cable had actually caught fire.

So I am planning to throw away the entire bunch, it had cost me ~$150 to put it together in 2015. I am just thinking, if I can reuse anything other than the case like the HDD's, the fans, the network card(was a second-hand 1Gbit PCIe card actually, still of good use), the USB 3.0 4 port PCIe card(again a second-hand one, but gave the speeds of around 140MBps on all 4 at the same time), and a parallel card that I used for experimentation. Or shall I not risk it and throw all away?

Also, I have 3 throw awayble power supplys bought from local markets, all from ~2008-09. Do you think, there is a chance of a fucking blast in case I try on with another PSU.

I can't try with my current PSU unfortunately for sure, since it itself cost ~$100.

Edit - I do have a Pentium 4 PC (has PCIe) lying around. What all things can I plug into it to check if they are OK so that I might sell them or reuse them? I just don't want that PC to blow before I've finished and now I might not be able to check a working part.

I'm trying to upgrade my current pc for my son, but i know nothing about pc's.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 10:28 PM PST

Christmas is right around the corner, and all i hear my son talk about when he plays with his friends on fortnite is "If i had a pc i could be so much better." So, i wanna do exactly that for him, get him something that can run half decent ( at least 60 frames per second). Problem is, I'm on a really tight budget. My current pc i know little to nothing about. It has a GeForce 550Ti, Intel Xeon 3360, 8gb of ram spread across 4 green stick...thingys. And I think a cooler master heat sink/fan combo.

With 167 dollars, what can I upgrade to get it to run fortnite at a solid 60 frames per second?

Can i buy 2 sets of 1x8gb instead of 1 set of 2x8gb for the same setup?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 01:35 AM PST

    Hi,

    I found a website that sells G.Skill Aegis 3000MHz 1x8GB at 30€ while the G.Skill Aegis 3000 MHz 2x8GB set is at 67€.

Can i just buy 2 of the 1x8 for 60 and run dual channel? What's the catch?

Edit: i do NOT plan to overclock any of my components btw. Also, cpu is a Ryzen 3. Not sure if this extra information is useful?

Gigabyte RTX 2070 super or Nvidia GeForce GTX 3060 ti founders edition

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 09:25 AM PST

I am confused on which graphic card to buy. I was going to buy 2070 super but then Nvidia launched 3060 ti founders edition and is bit cheaper than 2070 super. So I should wait to buy 3060 ti or go for 2070 super?

Bought 3 Kraken x63's. Are all 3broken, or is the pump supposed to be obnoxiously loud?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:07 AM PST

I decided to swap my NH-D15 for a much smaller and simpler cooler - that was my life's biggest mistake.

Over the course of this week, I have bought an NZXT Kraken x63, and replaced it twice due to pump noise. Each replacement AIO's pump was literally louder than the last. The pump noise at 20% is audible, and at 100% it sounds literally like a printer, and this applies to all replacement AIOs, especially the latest one.

The direct quote from NZXT claims: "(11:36:57 PM) Matt K.: There should be a slight noise to it because the impeller is cutting through the fluid but it should be barely audible".

I am dead sick of installing AIOs in my PC, and I am extremely scared that the fourth will come broken as well. I really don't want to switch back to my NH-D15 as it looks super ugly in my case and takes up so much space compared to an AIO, and when paying $200 for a high quality AIO, I expect it to work!

There is no way in hell that I'd receive three broken AIO's in a row, right? Is NZXT support lying about the cooler's noise levels, or am I that unlucky? (I doubt this is how the AIO is supposed to sound, all three are obnoxiously loud, and the third one even makes a grinding noise). Should I try for a fourth AIO??

Hopefully someone with an x63 can help me out, thanks in advance!

EDIT: I followed the Asetek AIO quieting video that NZXT support gave me, Gamers Nexus's AIO orientation guide, and everything else I could find online for the cooler.

Hoping some folks here could confirm whether I'm getting underperformance in the MSI 3080 Ventus I just received. Think my CPU may be bottlenecking, but not sure how much it would. I have a 7700K @ 4.8 Ghz.

    My Heaven benchmark results:

    FPS:140.7 Score:3544 Min FPS:36.4 Max FPS:293.4

    3 Way PSU Swap

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST

Ok, so I currently have a 400w evga garbage teir unit that I got off my friend for basically free. I recently bought a $100 pc to flip, and it came with a corsair ax760i. My friend has an 80plus 500w evga he got new a few months ago and asked to trade for the ax760i. I agreed, if the 400w can run the flip pc, as I would like to get rid of the 400w.

    • TLDR: Can a 400w psu run a GTX 760, i5 4670k that will be oc'd (can it be oc'd?), 16gb ram, gigabyte z87x ud3h mobo, and a 240gb ssd?

First Build Issues, Fans and Mobo work, No display. System shuts off by itself after 5 minutes

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST

    Hi All,

So I built my first PC yesterday and it wouldn't turn on so I replugged everything in and got the fan and mobo working with nothing on the display. The led lights light up red for DRAM and CPU. I have tried resetting the bios, plugging the ram into different slots, unseating the CPU, plugging the monitor into the GPU. But it still won't show anything and the system turns off (or dies?) by itself after 5 minutes or so. Please help.

    Specs:
    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
    Gpu: xlrb 1650s
    Psu: Corsair cx 550m

Apart from the capacity, are there any other differences like speed or reliability? I'm thinking of buying Samsung EVO SSD.

    I5 10400f vs ryzen 3600

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 02:26 AM PST

The 10400f is currently £140 and the 3600 is £200.

I'll be doing gaming but also some cad stuff.

10400f looks better for gaming but not sure about the cad performance?

    I need help building a stream/gaming pc...

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 01:10 PM PST

This is my first time building a pc and i want to get into streaming and i can't decided what CPU to get for streaming and I was thinking about the 3700x , 5600x and the i7 9700k (super good deal now). I know I would also need a good GPU but that has also been a problem since each one is really expensive.
