    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    My wife surprised me... kinda

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:13 AM PST

My wife and I have a strong history of not being able to wait until Christmas to give each other the presents we got them.

Well my wife is about to graduate from nursing school and wants an Apple Watch to wear around during her nursing shifts and various other nurse reasons.

Just yesterday her Apple Watch came in from UPS and I couldn't help but to open the package in the other room and place it in plain sight to see if she would notice it, she didn't so I had to provoke her to finally see it. Need less to say she was speechless because I am usually a penny pinching cheap skate.

Later on that night she was alluding to buying me some sort of computer Christmas present and I was curious of what she may think of getting my setup since I know she does not know much about the computer world.

She told me she was wanting to get me a GRAPHICS CARD particularly then nvidia 30series.

I was so excited but sad at the same time because she didn't know how scarce they were lol.

    Just thought I'd share.

Help me! Can't get 3080 to work.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 09:13 PM PST

When I boot my pc all of the lights turn on but I don't get a display signal. If I switch to integrated graphics it works just fine. (Obviously I'm switching where I plug the display into.)

Of note: when I have my card plugged in not only does the display not work but also my keyboard and mouse don't seem to be getting power. It shouldn't be a power issue tho as I have a 800 watt psu. (Cpu is 10850k)

I've tried different monitors, mice, keyboards, cables, disabling intergrated graphics, making sure the card and all power connectors were plugged in correctly, updating the BIOS, but to no avail.

I also tried changing in the bios so it uses intergrated graphics over my 3080 so I could hopefully post and try and download the latest drivers but no power to the mouse or keyboard and while it did detect a display, the picture itself was just a black screen.

Again the system works perfectly fine so long as the card isn't connected to the PCI slot.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks :)

Edit: Thank you all so much for your help!

I got the pc through cyberpower and I plan on returning so they can figure it out.

When checking out I used the 800 watt standard gold plus option for the psu (basically it's cheaper and they pick whatever psu they have on hand that fits that standard.) This worked perfectly fine around 5 years ago when I purchased from them as a got a nice EVGA that has served me well. This time however they sent an Apevia... regardless of what my issue is (could honestly be the psu) I don't want a high end system on a notably unreliable and literally cheapest psu available at those specs. So to avoid voiding the warranty I'll just send it back so they can switch it out/figure out the problem.

Again thank you all so much for your help!

Is it impossible to get graphics cards right now?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 07:34 AM PST

I've tried to find a couple of solid mid priced graphics cards and everywhere online is either sold out or at an exorbitant price. Is this generally the trend of graphics cards or is it due to the holiday season?

What Do I Do After My PC Is Built?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 10:16 PM PST

So i just finished my pc build. Everything seems to be working perfectly and i've even downloaded a few games and played. Is there anything else I should be worried about?? Can my PC just randomly break?

I cut a payphone into a PC case for a mancave build.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:07 PM PST

I wanted to build something small form factor or custom for a while. When I found an old payphone at a pawn shop, I figured that was it. Build description is on the imgur album.

    Payphone to PC

The specs are very modest but RDR2 medium quality getting 60fps isn't bad. But seriously made me consider a dedicated GPU. There isn't one that would fit organically, but with a riser I might be able to achieve it.

    Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.

Card similar to the RTX 3060??

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 10:51 AM PST

So I'm trying to build a PC, and I got a submission from r/buildapcforme that included the RTX 3060. (https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/yj4fht)

The problem is that this card is basically out of stock everywhere I'm looking. Anybody here knows a card with similar performances/price that would be compatible with the build I'm trying to do?

    Thanks !

I don’t know how.. but I got it

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:50 PM PST

So a couple days ago he woke up at 6am went on the Best Buy site to buy the 3060ti with full expectations to fail. Hearing all of the stories of scalpers and new GPUs selling out in seconds, there was no I thought I would get it. Anyway I ended up checking out and "buying it" it was sort of surreal to me so I still thought that until it shipped I could not be certain that I actually got it. Well today I got an email saying it shipped. I don't want to make this post to put salt in the wound for you all who didn't get it, rather just to share my surprise and excitement. I hope you all are able to attain the card as well!

In big trouble after installing new GPU! Don't know what to do...

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 12:44 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I have a threadripper based system and finally got the GPU I wanted for my 3D animation work.

I took the EVGA GTX 1080 out and installed the new Asus 3090 in.

Booted the computer and kept getting BSOD right at the startup. 2 to 5 seconds in at the login page.

The GPU is clearly working as it's sending the signal to my monitor. So I thought it's a driver issue. I went in SAFE MODE (which works perfectly fine) and uninstalled all drivers for my GPU. Restarted, and BSOD again.

Went in safe mode and installed 3090 drivers (clean install). Restarted, and BSOD again.

    What else can I try?

I'm okay with reinstalling Windows, but is that really going to solve the problem? Am I missing something here? What one needs to do when switching GPUs?

    Old, cool uncle needs help

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 03:43 AM PST

Hello dear build a pc sub!

My nephew is finally getting rid of his console and wants to join the glorious PC-master race (that still a thing?)

Me, as the wannabe cool uncle, did pipe up when my sister thought about buing a prebuild from the next store and minutes later a deal was made, configuration and assembling of the PC will be my X-Mas present.

His Budget is about 600€. He mostly plays Fortnite but I hope his taste for games will grow with him.

The last time i build a PC is 4-5 years down the river so my config might need a lil bit of reality check up!

I tried to make the basic components future proof, the GPU will need to be upgraded in a few years but the rest should serve the next ~7 years?

Would you be the helping hand and make this Christmas something special for my nephew by taking a look at my list and maybe give me some hints where I could upgrade for little money?

Thank you very much in advance and have a good time!

Potential Tips for Hard to Get Items

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:28 PM PST

I keep reading that everyone is struggling to get things like the 5600X, 3070, etc. so I wanted to try and share some things that worked for me.

Recently, I decided to build a PC for my little brother (after laughing at my friends who couldn't get the CPUs and GPUs) and joined in on the struggle. I started ordering the parts on Saturday, and as of yesterday all my parts have been ordered. I got my hands on a 5600X from Amazon on Monday, an MSI 3070 Gaming X Trio on Tuesday, and ended up getting three 3060 TIs because I was helping some friends out.

Honestly, I gave myself a pat on the back because I keep seeing people missing out yet I managed to acquire so many things in such a short period of time. So, I wanted to share helpful streams, Discords, Twitters, etc. to try and help others. If you have anything to add, please do so!

AMD CPU stream: AMD 5600X/5900X/5950X Stock Checker - With audio alerts
AMD GPU stream: Radeon 6800/6800XT Stock Check
Nvidia GPU stream: RTX 3060TI/3070/3080/3090 Stock Checker - With audio alerts

Turn on Twitter notifications for these:
    https://twitter.com/BotRtx
    https://twitter.com/_RTXBot_

    Discords:
    StockDrops
    Refresh - In Stock Alerts
    Falcodrin Community Discord

    Apps:
HotStock (1 alert for free, 10 alerts for premium which is $5)

For the Discords, be sure to do some role reacts so you can get notifications. However, sometimes they are a bit late. Do be warned that the streams do have loud sounds, scared me when it suddenly went off. Make sure you have your BestBuy, Newegg, and Amazon accounts set up where you can checkout and pay immediately. I made most of my purchases on Newegg, and I had my billing, shipping, and credit card information already stored so it was a really quick checkout. For Amazon, often times when you add to cart it doesn't appear in your cart. All I did was go back using mouse button 5, refresh using F5, and add to cart again. I kept repeating that over and over and eventually it added to cart and I could proceed to checkout. Amazon can be really frustrating, especially when you get so close but then they take it out of your cart, but don't give up!

Hopefully these can help someone, and please do let me know if there are any issues, or if you have any success! Best of luck, keep trying and I know you'll get one.

5 Year old PC suddenly not receiving power

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:02 PM PST

    Hi All,

Any help troubleshooting would be appreciated...

My wife and I recently upgraded to Logitech G935 Headphones. She was having some audio issues with them so I ran Driver Easy and updated all of her drivers. All seemed to be working fine...

This morning she went to turn on the PC (that I had put into sleep mode overnight) and it wouldn't wake up. The power button was lit up, but not the keyboard, mouse, etc. She held down the power button for 5 seconds, and we have not seen a light on the device since.

Any best guesses as to what this could be? Could me updating the drivers have affected the hardware somehow? Just odd timing otherwise for the CMOS battery to die or the PSU to have failed.

Another item: She went from 8gb ram 1 slot, to adding 16gb in the second slot for 24gb ram about 1 month ago. Could this have been cause to fry the PSU or motherboard? Or should it hopefully be something as simple as replacing the CMOS or PSU?

Specs I can read while it's dead are below

    AMD Radeon RX 470
    24gb RAM

    600B EVGA Power Supply
    GA-H110M-A Gigabyte Motherboard

Intel Processor - Can't read the specs at the moment

    Thanks!

    Am I stupid for pairing a Ryzen 3 3300x with a RTX 3060ti?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:18 PM PST

so here's what happened: i was driving by my local canada computers and saw that there was no line, so i figured he'll might as well inquire cause i heard they're going like hot cakes... to my disbelief the guy finds 1 left from the back, so i'm like "fuck it" and bought it.

    i have a ryzen 3 3300x

that being said i'm aware that "bottlenecking" does occur sometimes if the processor isn't strong enough but i'm not really into buying one at the moment.

so like...was this a stupid move? or should i just hang on to it

i guess i feel guilty that i kind of stepped myself into cheap cpu expensive graphics card territory

    Did i fry my 3070?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 09:28 AM PST

I just got my 3070 in the mail and installed it in my pc. At first startup it crashed a few times fast and then my pc proceded to start up without the gpu. Since then I can't seem to get the gpu to work. It also won't show up in bios.

My MB is B250 gaming pro and i have 650W power supply.

If I put in my old gpu it all works, atm I don't have another system to test the 3070.

Do you think i fried my card? Or any idea?

    Moving! What's the best way to transport my pc in a car? (30ish min drive}

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:15 PM PST

Hey internet, like the title suggests I need some advice. I have a tempered glass case and some nice parts inside that I'd like to not break. Here's the catch: I don't have it's original box nor anything that would fit it inside. Do I wrap it in bubble wrap and towels and keep it on my lap in the passenger/back seat? I don't have time to get a box for it unfortunately as it's going down 9am tomorrow. Just could use some advice from people who've done this before.

This is what it looks like.

And these are the parts I don't wanna kill

    Adaptive Sync on the G34WQC

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:11 PM PST

For anyone who may have or are very experienced with the G34WQC, how is the adaptive sync on it?

I recently purchased a RTX 3080 and I am worried that I may experience flickering or issues of that nature when trying to run G-Sync. On Nvidia's website, this monitor isn't even listed as G-Sync compatible.

Help with case airflow issues with new 3080

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 08:27 AM PST

So I recently upgraded to an ASUS Tuff gaming 3080 and it has really messed with my cases airflow and I need help figuring out the best way to fix it.

PC Build: Intel Core i9 9900k Asus Tuff Gaming 3080 OC Corsair Vengeance 4x8 32GB Evga 80 plus gold 750w NZXT Kraken X63 (front mounted, 2 fans on outside, 2 fans on inside) x5 Phanteks RGB 140mm case fans Phanteks p400s case

    https://imgur.com/a/nIyC37p

I previously had a 1070 Ti founders edition in my case. I think the blower style helped significantly with my airflow, I usually got around 70C on the GPU and 60C on the CPU.

The new 3080 being an open air design is throwing off the thermals in my system. Very quickly the pc heats up and I the graphics card goes up to 82C+ and the cpu was hitting 94C+ before I stopped. Another side note, when it got this hot my case fans were going full speed and started making a crazy noise before 3/5 of them stopped spinning and now won't spin anymore yet the RGB still works.

With the side panels off temps were better. The 3080 was consistently 63C but the cpu was still pushing 90C+ in black ops Cold War and rainbow six siege.

I've been told the front mounted radiator could be limiting my fresh airflow, but unfortunately I don't think it will fit if I moved it to the top of the case. I'm trying to decide if I should change to a air cooler for my pc like the be quite pure rock 2 or get a new case with room for the radiator on top and better fans on the front.

Fractal Designs Ion SFX-L 650W Gold compatible with Seasonic modular cables?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 12:52 PM PST

From my understanding, the Fractal Designs Ion SFX-L 650w is basically a rebadged Seasonic FOCUS 80+ Gold SSR-650SGX with an improved fan and cables. Looking at the pinouts provided by both manufacturers, at first it looks mirrored and it won't work. But looking at the psu key(squares and house looking shape), it seems to match up.

Can someone else doublecheck to see if I'm reading the pinouts right and that the cables are interchangeable?
Fractal Designs Ion SFX-L 650w pinout (pages 6-8)
    Seasonic 550w Focus Gold+ pinout

I currently have a full size atx PSU, Seasonic 550w Focus Gold+, in my Fractal Define Nano S case. I just bought a new video card that requires more power and a shorter PSU to fit in my case. The ION fits the criteria but the 24pin and cpu cables are short. I'm hoping to reuse the cables from my Seasonic onto the new Fractal PSU and vice versa as all modern Seasonic PSU cables are standardized.

    Thanks in advance!!!

Corsair LL120 RGB with Asus TUF x570-PLUS - rgb possible without hub/node?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 12:47 PM PST

    hey everyone!

i'm still new to the PC game - after 10 years on Mac, I made the big jump last month and it's been a lot of fun so far. I really love the whole building aspect of it a lot.

So I wanted to add another Fan to my case and got hold of the Corsair LL120 RGB. I wonder if i'll be able to use the RGB with my motherboard, without having to use an extra hub?

The motherboard comes with the following features:

    • 2x RGB Headers
    • 1x Addressable Gen 2 RGB Header

    Will these do the job?

    Thank you for your time!

New high end gaming rig - did I do it right?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:56 PM PST

So I am going to get myself a new gaming rig, but been a while since I put one together. I will buy the parts once the GPUs are a bit less scarce, hopefully in January.

One high priority for me is a very silent computer and secondly a good gaming rig. Are there some glaring errors or easy areas for improvement in the parts I have picked out?

    16gb or 20gb - which is better?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 08:56 AM PST

I ordered my kids a Yoga L390 which comes with

    4 GB DDR4 2400MHz

I hopped onto Crucial, used their tool to determine compatibility and ordered a 16GB stick of DDR4 - 2666.

I was going to add it to the 2nd empty slot for a total of 20GB but I'm wondering if I should just toss the 4GB and have just the 16GB stick in there?

It's an 8th gen i3 system and will be used for school, Roblux, minecraft, typical 10yr old stuff. I'd like the laptop to last as long as possible but I don't know if there's any meaningful difference between 20gb and 16gb, or if I'd be shooting myself in the foot by mixing two different capacity and speed ram sticks?
