AMD Radeon RX 6800 & 6800 XT: 4K Performance of 17 launch reviews compiled

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 12:05 PM PST

    • compilation of 17 launch reviews with ~1410 gaming benchmarks at 4K/2160p resolution
    • only benchmarks under real games compiled, not included any 3DMark & Unigine benchmarks
    • geometric mean in all cases
    • stock performance on reference/FE boards, no overclocking, no SAM, no RayTracing
    • missing results were interpolated (for the average) based on the available results
    • performance average is (moderate) weighted in favor of reviews with more benchmarks
    • 1080p, 1440p & RayTracing results will be available (later) on my launch analysis for 3DCenter

Anandtech not doing GPU reviews anymore?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 03:37 PM PST

RDNA2 launched today, and it occurred to me that Anandtech hasn't even posted so much as a review of Ampere. I generally look forward to their architecture deep-dives and reviews, and have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed that they don't seem to be covering the new GPU releases.

Have the profit % margins of GPUs changed over the years?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 01:44 AM PST

I find myself genuinely curious about this. GPUs used to be much much cheaper, but they were also much smaller and cost much less. Does anyone have a verifiable approximation on what the bill of materials have been for GPUs over the years. Starting from the 8800gt ?

    Thanks!

Anandtech and their knowledge of Apple uarchitecure names

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 10:08 PM PST

Where is Anandtech getting their information from? I did some digging and every source on Apple's A series and M series chips' uarchitecture names like Firestorm and Tempest all point to Anandtech, with no first party sources to back them up. Does Apple disclose the names in their developer site? Does Anandtech have sources inside Apple? Or are they named by Anandtech?

Question on Apple's lead in chips

    Posted: 18 Nov 2020 01:23 PM PST

From what I've gathered, Apple's big advantage in chips comes down to "they don't have to make money on the chips, because they make money selling the final product". With tech companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon going a more Apple-like route, "making their own chips for consumer products" do you think Apple would still have major advantages on chips in future consumer products?

Title says it all. With new MacBook coming out, can we expect that more manufacturers will shift to ARM?
