Swapped my PC case and dropped CPU temps 15 degrees at lower noise with only stock fans Posted: 27 Nov 2020 10:23 PM PST I live in Australia and it gets seriously hot here in summer (Dec-Feb). I'm talking over 45 Celsius/110 Fahrenheit a few times a year and regularly over 35 Celsius/95 Fahrenheit. In my Be Quiet! Silent Base 800 with 2x 140mm intake and 1x 120mm exhaust fans, my heavily OC i5 6600k would get up to mid-70s under load with a Noctua NH-U12S cooler. This was at only 20 Celsius ambient temp. I was worried that in summer the machine would seriously cook, so I researched a new airflow focused case. Today I shifted everything into a new Lian Li Lancool II Mesh 'Performance' case (the non-RGB version). I ran a bunch of tests including 3dMark, Realbench and CoD Modern Warfare and the highest CPU temp was 62 degrees even though ambient temp was 24 Celsius today. The new case has dropped a good 15 degrees and that's with the case fans spinning much slower (and therefore quieter) than the previous case fans. GPU temps are about the same, but I think that's partly because the intake fans don't spin up enough to exhaust the GPU better because the CPU never gets hot enough to trigger my fan curve uplift. Anyway, just goes to show how good these newer style 'airflow' cases are. It was also super easy to build in and has much better cable management than my old case. I Just Noticed My Fuck Up After 3 Years of Using My PC Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:17 AM PST So I was just randomly watching some Linus Tech videos on Youtube and then suddenly i heard this: "you should always put your gpu in your Primary/First PCIe Slot for maximum performance". That was the moment I realised that i had fucked up. I never thought that a 16 slot PCIe slot would not have 16 lanes necesserily. So this means i have been using my gpu on an x4 lane PCIe slot for 3 years... The difference is not VERY BIG and its as much as 5 to 15% in performance (personally I believe its a major difference) differing on different setups and cards. I had put my gpu in second PCIe for case space management reasons. So i just thought many others would be in a situation like me and never even know about it... my advice to you guys is that if you have your gpu on a Secondry PCIe slot check your mobo manual and make sure that your gpu is running at x16 lane. You can also use gpu z to check this. [link] [comments]
Learn from my mistake - Modular PSU cables are NOT interchangable and can absolutely fry your drives Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:08 AM PST During my recent PC build I fried (literally - there was smoke and flame and everything) a SATA hard drive and a BD-R drive by using a PSU SATA cable which I didn't realise was from a different manufacturer. The plugs were identical at both ends but the internal wiring was different. There is a happy-ish ending to this story, an electronics guy I found on ebay was able to repair the drive electronics so I was able to get data off it (always back up folks) He told me I had basically created "an arc welder" as the current was so high. So proceed with caution folks, PSUs are powerful things, proceed with extreme caution when plugging in cables. [link] [comments]

First pc build. Can't even play Roblox. Posted: 27 Nov 2020 08:50 PM PST My son and I built his first pc and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong. I've installed and updated windows 10 and also flashed the bios to the latest version. But it can't even handle Roblox. It's very laggy when he plays and he says his 3 year old laptop is faster ha ha. I think it is a setting in the bios that I haven't enabled or something related to the ram. I have enabled xmp " profile 1" in the bios also. Thanks for any help. Here are the specs. First time building a pc. Had to go through hell. Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:07 PM PST First problem arrived while screwing in the wraith cooler. The springs with which you need to apply the pressure to screw in the wraith cooler just wasn't helping. Then while realigning the screws of the cooler with the motherboard I applied too much force and the CPU came right off.... Along with a bent pin (θ‿θ). I freaked out and almost broke down as every YouTuber I knew talked about how scary that situation was and there was a good possibility that all my money went down the drain. And then searched it up on Google and tried to straighten it with a sewing needle. I was so scared to apply too much force and break the pin altogether. Thankfully it did get straighten out and I cursed AMD for such a shitty socket and CPU design. So this time I tried my best screwing it on the bare floor which wasn't prone to static electricity and was able to apply sufficient amount of force on the mounting bracket of the cooler to screw it in. (I was using the motherboard box before and it was bending so much that I was unable to do so). I also didn't know that you had to screw diagonally. Next issue came up when I saw my pc case didn't come with motherboard stand offs. Had to scour the web for an hour before realising that my pc case has built in stand-offs(is that a thing or did I do something seriously wrong?). Next issue was the fact that I inserted my rgb fan led into the wrong socket and blew parts of the rgb. So now the fan shows one color each for two fans and the other one has no RGB. Nice. Next issue is I bought a semi-modular power supply and the cable management KILLED ME. I spent like 3 hours managing cable and it still looks messy... Not to mention my pc case back panel is still bulging out and I ran out of zipties and willpower. Nevertheless everything else went fine, computer booted up, windows got installed. Installed windows on SSD ( was hard as I bought a 1tb ssd and 1tb hdd and during installation I had to google up which one was more likely to be ssd) and then successfully installed steam and epic games. Everything's running quite well. And damn SSD is fast. This is my first time owning a fast PC. The one that I've been using so far was really really slow. Much like all the slow computers linus and jaytwocents reviewed. Also nevertheless I just felt like sharing my story will y'all. Ik many other people here go through SO much worse than me so I don't want to sound cocky or lame. I just wanted to say that building a PC the first time is a bittersweet experience. Would I do it again. Probably but after like a year or so I'm just exhausted. This took like 6 hours of anxiety T_T. [link] [comments]
Just a rant about tech scalpers Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:56 AM PST I'm working on my second build and I'm super excited for it, but I'm about to honestly implode with anger if I find another scalper selling a 3080 for 1.6k. Feels like I can't find that video card anywhere. If you're reading this and a tech scalper, you're a garbage human. Rant over. Edit: Didn't expect a rant about scalpers to be so controversial. Thanks to everyone who posted stock update resources. Credit to u/NSUCK13 and u/rallymax for sharing the https://stockdrops.net discord. Is this $850 gaming pc setup good? Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:38 PM PST Hello! So I wanted to build myself a gaming pc and fit in the monitor, mouse, and keyboard into my budget of $900 (I did $850 just in case of tax/ shipping/ warranties). There aren't many great deals going on for AMD based pcs, but there's some cash that I've saved overall. I want to be able to do a little editing of videos, as well as play games such as: Sims 4, Minecraft (with mods), resident evil, CSGO, rocket league, etc. The build attached says $800 with rebates, but I'll get those after Christmas, so they'll be used for future upgrades. Is this a good build overall, or should I get other parts? Thanks so much! Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:48 AM PST Before I get into this, just want to let everyone know this isn't my first build, been building for twenty years, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah. For my daughter's birthday this year she wanted an upgrade to her computer which I thought was a great idea since she was on my old build (2009), school was going to be virtual (COVID), and she has been doing some light gaming. Decided to go with a Ryzen 5 build since Micro Center was having some bundle deals and we did not want to break the budget too bad. The Initial build: CPU: Ryzen 5 3400G MB: Gigabyte B450M SSD: WD Black 500GB RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws V PSU: Cooler Master 700W (it was from the old build and still doing well) About a week ago my daughter came to me saying the computer was throwing a BSOD about once a day and randomly rebooting. I thought this was odd as the computer had been stable up to this point. Started to do all the usual troubleshooting (drivers, Windows updates, etc) and this seemed to work for a day or so. Once it appeared it wasn't software related, I started to dig a bit deeper. Dug into Windows Event Viewer and noticed the computer was reporting a Critical Error Code of 41. Which meant some sort of power issue. Aha! The PSU must be dying! So I swapped out the PSU for a EVGA 400W model I had from a previous build. Checked the power requirements and the PSU could handle this modest build. Guess what, didn't solve the issue. Alright, time for some serious troubleshooting. Memtest86, CPUID, HWiNFO, and even a Linux liveUSB to ensure it wasn't a Windows issue. After banging my head against the wall, I thought it is a power thing so the MB must be bad. Off to Micro Center, because who really needs another excuse to go there! Got a good deal on a refurbished MSI 550 board. Current specs: CPU: Ryzen 5 3400G MB: MSI B550M Pro-VDH WiFi SSD: WD Black 500GB RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws V PSU: EVGA 400W Got the new motherboard installed and it continued to throw different BSOD error codes. Clock Watchdog Timeout, SysException, etc! Motherf!#$%&!!!! I could install Linux but not Windows. Maybe the SSD is bad? Maybe the CPU is bad? What could be going on?! Update the BIOS? That's gotta be it! I updated the BIOS but to no avail. Started to think it was the CPU since Windows kept throwing the Clock Watchdog Timeout error but then I decided to check out everything from top to bottom. Dropped in a temporary SSD, reset the CMOS, and even tried the Linux install again. Nothing worked! Finally stumbled across a random post about the Ryzen 5 and G.Skill memory not playing well together. Well that doesn't make sense. It's just RAM. It's 3200 MHZ memory and some people mentioned it had to be downclocked to 2933. Well let's fire up the old BIOS and check the RAM speed. 2133? That shouldn't affect anything, right? WRONG!! The RAM was too damn slow! Selected the 3200 speed setting, saved the BIOS, and rebooted. The computer rebooted and got into Windows with no BSOD and no random reboots. Checked the event viewer and no critical error 41! Success so far..... TL/DR: Check your memory clock speed as well as your CPU clock speed when building your new machine. Don't assume the auto settings in the BIOS will make your machine work well right off the bat. [link] [comments]
My friend built me a PC a few years ago and I still haven't been able to hook it up. Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:21 AM PST But I'm wondering what model case it is. New PC Build after seven years. Looking for quick review / approval. Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:04 AM PST Build Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes, I have. What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. My current PC is from 2013 and this year the time has come for a new one, because it couldn't handle newer games anymore. I already ordered a rtx 3080 gpu (arriving next week) and a ryzen 9 5900x cpu. My goal is to build a pc around those 2 parts. Additionally, I like the aesthetics of the Corsair 4000D Airflow case, so I made some adjustments to the components, also embracing the RGB-looks with the fans and going for an AIO cpu cooler instead of the initially planned Noctua NH-D15 / D15S cooler. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) 1440p, 144hz monitor, >60fps, (Ultra) High settings. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Around CHF 3'000.00. In what country are you purchasing your parts? Switzerland. Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).
Provide any additional details you wish below.
Let me know if you need further information. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:36 AM PST Hey everyone quick question, I have a 2 x (6x2) pcie cable from my corsair rm750 psu. First build in 6 years! Super happy with the way it turned out. Posted: 28 Nov 2020 12:21 PM PST Full lighting, normally all white Normal setup, off center a bit Bonus 2 person lan this weekend Decided to do a fresh new build including peripherals and all over the last few months as I was waiting for sales and good buys. I didn't keep track but I would guess I saved around ~$500 if not more by waiting things out. Normally not about RGB but after I unintentionally went almost all corsair products I decided to just go all in. Still need to get some diffusers for the strips as I'm unsure I like them but I am happy with how it turned out, especially with the cable management which I am very bad at.

I'm building a new computer and I have everything but my RAM and M. 2 drive. What should I do next? Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:59 AM PST As it says in the title, I've got everything except for my RAM sticks and M. 2 drive. These two final parts should be here by Monday. My power supply is ready to go in the case, and my CPU and CPU cooler are installed. My motherboard has been sitting on it's box for the past couple days, and I'm wondering what I should do with it. I was considering installing the video card and putting the motherboard into the case so it wouldn't collect dust, but that would inconvenience me as I'd have to pull it back out in a couple more days. What should I do from here? [link] [comments]

Built a full fledged work beast myself. And I am so much proud of it. Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:46 AM PST View: https://imgur.com/a/9x3Oyv8 Finally decided and completed my shift few months back, from using a laptop to a powerful work machine, which I can use for my design work as well as gaming. And most importantly I built it myself. I am very proud. CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x GPU: Gigabyte 2070 Super Windforce OC MoBo: MSI X570 Gaming RAM: Corsair LPX 16Gbx4 PSU: Corsair HX850 Cooler: MSI 360R SSD: Samsung Evo 970 Nvme for System, Crucial Nvme as second drive Case: Cooler Master MB511 Also too much upfront investment, but it's worth it. 😍 I am in love with its performance. Will a Hyper 212 Evo be enough for i7 9700k? Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:05 PM PST I recently bought a i7 9700k, with my old processor being an i5 7500. Graphical Glitch Before Boot. New MOBO and CPU. Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:00 AM PST Just bought a new MOBO (Strix 490e) and got a new CPU from intel (i7-10700k.) however right before Windows boots I get a small graphical glitch. It's not present when using the MOBO hdmi. I've reinstalled windows fresh multiple times as well. Weirdly it doesn't effect any gaming performance. But it's a bit worrisome. For reference my system components are GTX 1080 Ti I7-10700k 16gb Corsair vengeance DDR4 And of course the motherboard. Here's a video. EDIT: while I'm at work I just wanted to add a few other things. Whenever I boot into the safe mode menu or anything similar. There's no graphical glitch popping up with my GPU. This only occurs when loading windows. If it's booting into bios or anything else there's no glitch. I've possibly read that it could just be my profile picture glitching before windows fully loads. But I haven't seen anything else. Others on forums suggests it's a defective GPU. That wouldn't seem right considering it was working fine in my other motherboard (Strix z270e). My possible guess is maybe a defective PCIe? But at the same time I don't get any performance issues. It's just a weird glitch when booting windows. I've noticed it's either always when I boot or every other time. I've also tried reseating my components and nothing's changed. [link] [comments]
How much better is a gold power supply over a bronze Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:07 AM PST I have been planning to build a pc recently and I was going to get a power supply however a gold one is more expensive than a bronze. One of the things to note is I do want a quiet pc. Can someone suggest what reasons I should get a gold power supply. Edit: thanks for the help I will most likely be getting a gold power supply [link] [comments] |
