    Xbox 360 Build (Ryzen 1700 & GTX 1660)

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 06:54 AM PST

Hi all. Just wanted to share my Xbox 360 build. This was my first time doing a small form factor build or custom build. I spent a lot of time measuring and planning out where to put everything, but I was able to get everything to fit! Specs: Ryzen 1700, GTX 1660, 16GB Corsair 3200MHz, HDPLEX 400W, MSI B450I, 1TB M.2 SSD, Noctua NH-L9a-AM4, 3x Noctua NF-A4x10.

I know people love silent PCs, but there is something very satisfying about hearing your fans ramp up and knowing that the parts you spent all that money on are doing their job.

Then you put your hand over the exhaust and nod approvingly at all that heat you're removing from the case.

Our IT teacher just bent the pins on his cpu

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 03:40 AM PST

So our IT teacher was showing us how to build a computer, and everything went fine until he tried installing the cpu. He was installing the cpu and (idk if he didn't align the arrows on the cpu and motherboard or what but) he bent like half of the pins. But yeah. That's how our IT class went.

Computer wouldn't power up. Decided to check if there's something wrong with the power supply. Ask my son (4yo) if he knows anything about it. Says, "Dripped water in it and it turned off." Welp, guess I'm buying a new motherboard.

I have 2 computers, I want 1 wireless mouse and keyboard for both.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 07:42 AM PST

I have computers attached to TVs in our living room and I currently have a bad reception logitech mouse and keyboard.

It's nice that it's only 1 usb, because I can easily change between computers.

Most online options are 1 usb per mouse and 1 per keyboard.

    Any suggestions?

Is a 970 Evo worth it?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 07:35 AM PST

Currently just use a HDD takes up to 10 minutes to boot and everything else I use typically takes less than a minute. I'm a rather patient person and don't mind waiting but I saw the Evo was down to £130 for the 1TB. I'm considering it but not too sure.

What is the cheapest 500w power supply you’d recommend and why?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:06 AM PST

I'm building a PC for my Mom, and while it's not a powerhouse, I would like the components to last and not give her trouble. I chose the Seasonic S12 III because it's only $40 and has a 5 year warranty, and at least has 80+ bronze ratings. What do you all think? What's the cheapest that you'd go for a basic build?

Will CPUs start to get physically bigger?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 12:48 PM PST

We're currently seeing AMD releasing 7nm based CPUs, next year they say it will be 5nm based.

This is approaching what some say is the limit of how small we can make transistors. (about 3nm)

When we can't get transistors any smaller, will the die size of CPUs get bigger? Will we perhaps see CPUs 2, 3, even 4 times as thick as they currently are with complex cooling solutions? Or maybe just grow in width and length like Threadrippers?

Or maybe size won't change but we'll see AMD stagnate on the 5nm process in the same way Intel has on 14nm.

Curious what everyone thinks of the future of CPUs.

    Meshify C still worth it?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 07:53 AM PST

I am planning to build a PC in the next few weeks. I have already settled on a few components, but I don't know which case I should really get. I really love the look of the Meshify C as I do not really want to make a complete RGB build (too expensive). Currently the case has really dropped in price for me (like 20$) and I am thinking about buying it. The questions I have are

    1. Is the Meshify C still such a good case in 2020?
    2. since fractal released the Meshify 2 today, will the prices decrase again by such big amounts?
    3. Should I wait and order it with the other parts or right now?

Thanks a lot for anyone that can help me here :)

New PC Build for a Multi-Monitor Addict

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:59 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Primarily intensive CAD, modeling, and rendering work, with occasional singe-player gaming. I am a brain-fried visual media junkie, and accordingly have a 4 monitor setup (3 monitors and a 4k tv - more info in additional details section below), and would mostly be working off two of the monitors while peripherally watching streams or movies on the other monitor and the tv, and occasionally gaming on the 4k TV with maybe one other monitor active playing a random tv show.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

4K/2K resolution, at decently high (not ultra) settings, 60-144 fps.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1400 or less

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

(This is an adaptation of a build previously listed in the wiki)

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    Monitor / port info:

    1) Primary work monitor, Acer ED273UR: 2K w/ 144hz max. Primary ports: 1x hdmi 1.4, 1x displayport 1.2

    2) Secondary work monitor, Acer K272HUL: 2K w/ 60hz max. Primary ports: 2x hdmi 1.4, 1x displayport 1.2

    3) 4K TV: TCL Roku 49S405: 4K w/ 120hz max. Primary ports: 3x hdmi 2.0

    4) Media monitor: generic 1080p Viewsonic monitor. Primary ports: 1x DVI

I would love to be able to use all of my monitors and TV simultaneously at their max possible resolutions & refresh rates. I am assuming this is where it would be worth the extra money for the RTX 2070 over the 2060, for better performance with multi monitors? With this case I need to keep the video card length under 315 mm, but seems like most 2070 builds do that.

For the 4K TV, I think I am limited to 60hz at 4K due to hdmi 2.0. Currently I even have to disable all of my other monitors and have the TV connected to my GPU's displayport via an active adapter to avoid dropping down to 30hz. But can the RTX 2070 w/ hdmi 2.0b do 4k at 60hz with also at least one other monitor active, via an 18 GBps hdmi cable? And could it do 2k at 120hz, either with all other monitors disabled or with one other monitor active?

I'd like to build something over thanksgiving because my current workstation is dying, but I get the sense that this is kind of a bad time to spend on a GPU with a newer generation out - so is it better to keep other pieces of this build but go with a cheaper GPU and then swap it out with better one when supply and prices stabilize next year or whenever?

Thank you for anyone who was able to read this, and for anyone who has any insight or feedback! I think y'all are a really awesome community and it is super cool for you to help others here.

    i7 10700k and RTX 3070 Underperforming

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:32 AM PST

Hello. I am not thrilled with the performance of my newly built PC

Specs: CPU: Intel i7 10700k GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3070 OC RAM: 32gb Corsair Vengeance RGB NVME: Intel 660p 1tb HDD: Seagate BarraCuda 2tb 7200 RPM MOBO: Asus ROG STRIX B460-H

Userbenchmark is not working because it's not detecting my GPU for some reason.

Going to resead my GPU and get back to you.

CPU Score: 79% but background CPU is at 67% and that was on a fresh restart. Task Manager is saying only 10% usage idle.

Ram Benchmark: 87% which I feel is kind of underperforming.

    3DMARK Timespy result was 13721

GTA Benchmark runs at around 130 FPS which I feel like should be a lot more than that.

Minecraft Runs like crap even with 16gb of Ram dedicated to it.

Star Citizen runs at around 40fps which I should be getting around 100.

Any help would be greatly apricated.

Looking for a sharp, 1440 or 4k resolution, color accurate monitor.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 01:37 PM PST

I'm looking to spend about $300 or so and would like a 27". I work professionally in video editing and photography, so color accuracy is my #1 desire, as well as a higher resolution than 1080p. I'd like something with a refresh rate of 75k or higher as well.

So far, I've found this Asus. The colors are supposed to be great. But ideally I'd like a 10 bit. But I'm having trouble finding something. If you know anything off the top of your head I'd love to hear some recommendations!

    Thanks.

    New to Pc Building

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:50 AM PST

Hi, I'm new to pc gaming, I reached out to my brother in law for advice on what parts I should grab. I already got a Corsair mid size case, here is the list of parts he recommended, my budget is $700, does this list look good? Or are there replacements anyone would recommend instead? I don't care about 4K, 1080 or 1440p, 60fps and smooth gameplay is enough for me. I'll mainly be playing Baldur's gate 3, Cyberpunk and Destiny 2. Thank you everyone.

New Mobo & CPU install. Any tips?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 08:35 AM PST

Hey guys - getting my 5600x today with a new b550. Never replaced a mobo/CPU in an existing build and while I've watched some videos & read the mobo user guide, anything in particular I should be careful about?

I'm feeling pretty good about replacing the hardware, and planning on just plugging in all my SSDs, but is there anything software related I need to do, or should it just boot up normally to windows once I plug everything back in?

    Upgrading PC Help

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:29 AM PST

Hey All. In Lieu of getting a new console, I think I'll just upgrade some parts on my PC instead. I've decided to potentially upgrade my old intel CPU for a Ryzen 5 3600 as well as a new case and a few other odds and ends.

This is what I was thinking for my upgraded build. Any items that I already own are priced at $0.

I'm not 100% confident with my PC building skills/knowledge. I've built two but am no means well verse. I just wanted to get some other people's input before biting the bullet on these purchases. Thanks so much!
