This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Starting with my first PC build! The White Beast!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:37 AM PST

    Hello people,

I am 17 years old and building my first own PC after having several second handed PC's.

I saved money for a really long time, so I could build a very strong PC which I could use for my study and for gaming for the upcoming years.

Today I finally got all my parts in, except the GPU (Gigabyte Vision OC RTX 3080, should be here in 1 or 2 weeks). I'm building a white PC as I love the clean look of it. Here are the parts:

Case: Fractal Design Define 7 White + Tempered Glass

    Motherboard: Gigabyte Vision G Z490

    CPU: Intel i7 10700K

    RAM: G.Skill Trident Z 4x8GB 3600Mhz (CL16-16-16-36)

SSD: ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro NVME 2 TB M.2

CPU Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360

GPU: Gigabyte Vision OC RTX 3080

Vertical GPU Mount: Cooler Master Universal Kit V2

    PSU: Corsair RM850X White

    Picture of the parts!

UPDATE: I put everything together. It works!!! I am currently struggling with Windows activation. It's activated on my previous PC, but I can't change it. I hope I wont have to purchase a new Windows code :(

    EDIT: Windows works! Very happy!

PICTURES: Happy me! I will play around with the lights. This is just the standard configuration.

    CPU Question - Ryzen 5 3600 vs Ryzen 5 5600X

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 11:24 AM PST

Is it worth going for Ryzen 5 5600X over Ryzen 5 3600 cpu? I got a RTX 3070 and planning to game at 1080/1440p 144Hz...

Any advice buying a RTX 3070 without spending $1000?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 11:44 AM PST

I understand it's completely out of stock from all retailers. I was just wondering what everyone else might be doing to try and get one.

Do retailers typically update their stock online at a specific hour each day? Should I be checking all websites 3 times a day? Is any sort of effort I put into it even going to be worth it or is it pretty much 100% luck? Any and all advice is welcome. This is my first time wanting a newer Model GPU and I'm starting to now fully understand the frustrations involved with trying to purchase one.

Need help with troubleshooting mic sound

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:33 PM PST

Hello Built a new PC awhile ago, the audio is working fine but the only thing I'm having an issue with is my microphone sound.

It always has a LOUD BUZZing sound no matter what I do. Muted or non-muted the mic will always have a buzzing sound.

I have uploaded the sound I'm talking about here

It's happening on both my front case audio port, (single port) and my back case (motherboard port) as well.

    I have already

    • checked the ports connections
    • checked the audio drivers
    • checked the boosts on sound panel on windows 10
    • checked the physical port and made sure headset is working (is new)
    • Doesn't happen on another device.

the headset is Razer Kraken pro v2 and specs

So my Corsair rm750x comes with 2 pcie cables , each cable has 2 6+2 pin cables on the ends. Would I power both cables and use one end on each or would I use on of the cables and use both 6+2 cables from the one cable and bend them together?

P.S.A I'm not building the pc yet , so don't yell at me for being on carpet! Lol

I'm looking to upgrade a PC I've owned for 10 years, and I'm curious what people do with their old PCs. I would use my new one for gaming. My old one handles most games well, but is it even worth anything if I try to sell it? I don't really have a use for two desktops.

Why is my RAM usage so high?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:37 AM PST

I realize that this is not strictly related to "build a pc", but you seem like the best place to turn for this :)

Recently I have noticed on my (Windows 10 build 19041) PC, the memory usage seems to be very high and I cannot figure out why. When I look in Task Manager, the sum of all process' memory does not seem to come close to the "total used memory".

For example, in the screenshot below, it says that 57% of system memory is being used which is about 9.2GB. But when I add up the usage of each process, it is about half of that (4.4GB).

    Task Manager Screenshot

What are the possibilities that could cause this? I don't think it could be a memory leak within a specific process, because that memory would be represented in that process' memory usage, right? Could it be something within Windows that is not represented in the Task Manager?

    Thank you!

Video TDR failure rx 5600 xx

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:59 PM PST

Hello, a week ago I built my first PC. Here are the specs:

    ASUS ROG Strix b450-F

    Ryzen 5 3600

    Crucial Ballistix 16gb (8x2) RAM

    Sabrent Rocket 1TB SSD

    CORSAIR 550 Watt Power Supply

    AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT

Once I installed windows, after 5/10 minutes, the following blue screen error came up:

    "Stop code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE

    What failed: amdkmdag.sys "

    https://imgur.com/a/gnKDr7h

After my PC rebooted, it happened again 2 or 3 times at intervals of roughly a minute. I went into BIOS, changed the RAM speed to a lower speed (My RAM is 3200, and i changed it to 2800), and it booted and worked for an hour and a half. I thought that fixed the problem, but then the same error came up. After this, I followed this guide:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5rRIZ1wMAY

The guide made me delete the drivers, boot into safe mode, use DDU then reboot. Then I reinstalled the latest drivers from the AMD website, but instead of installing Adrenalin, I extracted the drivers and manually installed them. (I just followed the video linked above).

The PC then worked perfectly for almost 24 hours, and the error came up again.

After this, I have tried all the fixes I could find online, 1 by 1, and the BSOD would come up once or twice a day. I tried disabling hardware acceleration on Google Chrome and discord, I tried tweaking the power settings, I have checked for corrupt files on windows, I tried changing the TDR delay to 8 seconds, I re-installed my drivers for the second time and I monitored temperatures and they don't seem to be a problem, checked my bios is updated, but the BSOD still comes up randomly once or twice a day on average.

I haven't noticed any specific pattern, but the it seems like the BSOD has never come up while I am playing games, apart from one time where I tried sharing my screen and playing CSGO, where it crashed roughly 30 seconds after I started streaming.

If someone knows what I could try, it would be very helpful. Thank you.

    I7-10700k or Ryzen 5 5600x or Ryzen 7 3800x

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:05 AM PST

I'm about to buy and build a PC mostly for gaming but also to do tasks on machine learning and data science. The specs that I want are this ones:

    • RAM: CORSAIR VENGEANCE 16GB (2×8) 3600MHZ CL16
    • GPU: RTX 3080 (if I manage to get one... 😅)
    • CPU cooler: be quiet! Dark rock pro 4
    • Storage: Samsung 970 Evo plus 500GB
    • Power supply: CORSAIR RM 750W 80+ gold fully modular

However I'm having some doubts about the CPU... (i7-10700k vs Ryzen 5 5600X vs Ryzen 7 5800x)

I was also thinking of the Ryzen 7 5800x however right now I think I can get almost the same performance with the I7...

My budget for the CPU is around £300/£400 that's why also I'm in doubt with the 5800x 🤔 (around £440)

Worth looking at an older custom built PC for a first time build/builder?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 01:22 PM PST

As in the title, my uncle passed recently and the family knows I have an interest in building a gaming PC so they offered it to me. They have no idea what any of the hardware is in it, and from what I can gather he began began building it 5-7 years ago. He used it mostly for taxes and finance stuff, so I know I'd probably have to upgrade storage and GPU at a minimum, but would the CPU still be worth something if it is that old? Is there anything in there that could be worth salvaging? I've never built anything so I'm not sure if it is a good idea to try and save some money using what is already there or if it is better to just get everything new.

    Help Me!!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 12:55 PM PST

Okay so I'm a student in a part time job and I'm earning about £150 ish a month that I can put towards getting a pc. I want to spend about £800-£850 on a PC and could do with a recommendation on a build. I have tried to spec something out however I never know what would be best. I will be using it mostly to game, playing things like Rainbow six siege, rocket league, Valorant, Overwatch, CoD, Cyberpunk (if it ever releases) and games along those lines. I will also be doing some light college work and using it for general use but as I previously mentioned it will mostly be for gaming.

If you need any more info feel free to ask and thank you for any help you can give me :)

Connect multiple controllers to only one argb (5v) header on MB

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:10 AM PST

Hi, I'm new in the argb topic. My idea is to connect the following to my new MB (asus b550f) which only has one 5v argb header (120 leds).

    3 fans + 2 led streap https://antec.com/product/cooling/prizm-120-argb-32c.php

    5 fans https://antec.com/product/cooling/prizm-120-argb-5c.php

It's possible? How can I resolve this connection?

Would putting a lamp on top of my p500a hurt airflow a lot?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:44 AM PST

No fans there, only mesh and filter. Lamp will cover about what a 120mm fan would.

Help me upgrade my son’s rig, please!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:19 AM PST

    Hello everyone -

I'll just begin by letting you know that I do absolutely zero PC gaming. I have been gaming on PlayStations and Xboxes since their inception. My son, despite his upbringing, has become very interested in PC gaming. He has a box containing the following:

    I5 4590 3.30 GHz

    16 gb ram

    Gtx 1070

I don't know if any of that is good or not. In any event, I would like to help him upgrade this Christmas. I'm wondering, which piece do I start with for upgrading and what should I get him? Do I start with a new processor or a new GPU? Does he need more ram? Any insight you could give would be very helpful.

    Thank you!

I spend too much time comparing boards... [X570]

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:19 PM PST

Please choose one for my indecisive ass. I've fallen down the rabbit hole of excessive YT & Guru3D... now I'm lost in my thoughts.

    1. AORUS Elite
    2. AORUS Pro
    3. ASUS TUF plus

Don't really care about WiFi, if that helps. Attempting to maximize RAM speeds on a plebian 3200G, will likely replace with the 5000 APU equivalent upon release.

Haven't done this since the DDR2 days. However, I'm not satisfied with the Asrock B450M/AC garbo BIOS & memory QVL, & would like to replace it with one of these three. Thank you.

If I want to run (most) games at a stable 165fps 1080p, what graphics card should I get?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:15 PM PST

Just to clarify - I have a 165hz monitor, 1080p resolution - I'd be willing to turn down settings and also get less FPS in graphically demanding games obviously - this can be a next gen card, idrc if it's nvidia or amd - I'd prefer an RTX card just for the software and the game options even though many games have unpolished RTX

My CPU isn't amazing, 1700x, but idk id change it depending on the card that's not what I'm worried about.

Highest demanding game I play: AC Valhalla and Warzone (both are equally garbage optimized lol) Average Game: Rocket League, CSGO, Apex Legends, GTA V

If I need to specify anything else I will, thanks for any help.

(Budget of probably $300-$500 but I'd rather not spend $500, it would be cool if I could record/stream and edit off this but that's probably going to be the case if it's able to do what I asked)

Rereading this it's a bit confusing: 1080p 165hz $500 max budget, best performance I can get for what I want
