This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

We need to stop recommending the RX 570/580 for NEW PC builds at this time

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 06:26 AM PDT

    Hello,

I love this subreddit and all the help that people are willing to give out, but one thing I've noticed remaining constant is that people are still recommending the RX 570/580 to users looking at budget focused PC's.

6 months ago this would be sound advice, but the market has changed. The cheapest RX 570 per PCPP is $150, and a 1650 Super is only $10 more. The 1650 super uses less power and almost always outperforms the 570.

580's are more expensive than the 1650 super and again is either on the same performance level or loses by 3-10% to the super, while also using much more power.

Unless you're going used (which can really save you some cash for the GPU) I just don't see how we can recommend the 570/580 at this time. The last thing I want for a new builder is for them to waste their money!

Edit: I am not saying a 570/580 are bad. Just simply saying the market prices they are at (at least in the US) put them in a lower value category.

And yes I'm aware of specific use cases, but most builds we see come through here are for windows gaming PC's so that is what this is aimed at.

After months of saving I'm ready to pull the trigger on my first ever PC build ($1.2K budget), feedback on the parts list is hugely appreciated!

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:17 PM PDT

Hi everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've been savings for months and am finally ready to pull the trigger on my first ever gaming PC build, which I'm super stoked about but don't want to get wrong. Being a first time builder, I would massively appreciate any advice or feedback on the parts list below.

My budget was around $1,200 AUD and I'm planning on using a Silverstone SG13 as the case :)

The primary use for the build will be gaming, with potential use as a programming machine for University. For context, I needed a motherboard with wifi and bluetooth, as I don't have access to ethernet currently.

I'll be sure to post a pic once the finalised build is assembled!

EDIT 1: Thank you everyone for the amazing advice and feedback so far, I didn't expect to get this many replies!

I've taken them all on board and moved some of the funds from the motherboard into the GPU, managed to squeeze a 1660S into the build and maintain a decent mobo with wifi and bluetooth, let me know your thoughts, I might be able to stretch the budget a little further if you guys think the performance jump would be worth it! :)

EDIT 2: This post blew up, thanks to absolutely everyone who commented, I've read every single one and tried to reply to as many as I could! I really appreciated the advice and pointers everyone on this subreddit gave me for my first build.

I'm nervous to get started but super excited to get cracking, that being said, here's the final parts list! it may not be perfect, but it'll be mine :)

I'll be sure to post the finished pics once it's done and dusted! (And I predict I'll definitely have to look into some further cooling options in the not too distant future)

Upgrading my existing graphics card (GTX 970)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 07:50 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I want to replace my 4 (almost 5) year old graphics card. But I don't really know which one to buy.I'm also very new to PC hardware. I know a thing or two about parts and stuff, but I never replaced anything in my PC myself before. So I have a few questions:

(also, my apologies if this is a stupid question or not the right place to post this)

Edit: also worth nothing that I have a 144Hz monitor.Edit2: my specs: https://imgur.com/a/QgIKgLh

What graphics card should I buy?
I know there is no right answer for this question. My current card has 4 gigs of VRAM. I'm thinking about getting one that has 8 gigs. I was thinking about getting a 2060 (super?). But I've heard they made new graphic cards that are better in the same price region. It can't be too expensive but I wanna buy something that is future safe (I don't want to buy another one for the next 4 years).

If you have any recommendations please let me know.

What should I take into account?
Do all graphic cards work on all motherboards? What about power , cooling etc? Anything else I should take into account before I buy one?

Is it safe to replace the graphic card myself?
I mean, I've never done it before. Is it hard to do this yourself? Are there any changes I'll break the card if I do something wrong? (static electricity or anything?) Should I give it a try? Or ask someone at my local computer store to do it.

HUGE investment 8000$+ deep learning machine 2 RTX 3090's

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I've seen some people on a variety of subreddits make a deep learning machine. So hopefully this post helps those people.

I'm about to build a very powerful machine for the sake of doing research level deep learning projects, as well as some projects which involve evolutionary computation (memory and CPU heavy). I think I have something pretty good build so far. But wondering if you awesome people have some ideas/objections.

Aesthetics and size of case are not really a concern. It will have plenty of space while being out of view.

Here's my part listI am heeding some warnings from lambda labs stating "Use standard, non-blower GPUs, large case fans, an air shroud, and have an empty channel that's at least 2x PCIe slots wide between the GPUs."

Here is where i am least certain:

I avoided a 200 dollar cheaper motherboard "ASRock TRX40 Creator ATX sTRX4 Motherboard" because of bad reviews on newegg. Am i going overboard with the 800$ one?

    A case!!!!

there are so so many. But none seem to be really advertised for my purpose without promising a small case-- but i really do not care about size at all I'm currently considering Corsair Air 540 ATX Mid and Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower Case. I'm honestly not sure if either is really what i'm looking for.

If there's anything else you notice I'd love to hear it.

Is VRAM overpriced? Serious Question from "Non-Techy" Person

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 10:13 AM PDT

Please don't be harsh - I admit I'm ignorant here. Allow me to think out loud:

In September of 2015, I purchased a Radeon R9 390 from newegg.com for only $330. This GPU came with a whopping 8GB of VRAM and a solid core clock 1000 MHz. This GPU has held up very well over the years, though I recently found it's finally time to upgrade.

Obviously VRAM isn't the only point to consider when purchasing a new GPU. However, I found it very difficult to find a reliable GPU with 8GB of VRAM for under $400. Looking at this VERY topically, it seems money has been poured into other aspects of GPUs without really expanding on VRAM (or making it cheaper.) After 5 years, I think it's strange, but what do I know? (nothing.)

Who can shed light on the subject? I'd really just like to hear from someone who knows these answers, as I clearly do not.

*also* If I am just 'bad at shopping,' feel free to post links to any GPUs you'd recommend! This is the one I have my eye on: (Click the Gaming X model, not the Mech OC model,) https://smile.amazon.com/MSI-Gaming-Radeon-Boost-Clock/dp/B07Y8XCB36/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=radeon%2Brx%2B5700%2Bxt&qid=1603639748&sr=8-3&th=1

    Thank you!

An important part of any set up - Desk and Chair

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 01:59 AM PDT

Your battle station is ready. However powerful or humble it is, it's yours and you are proud.

But never neglect putting your chair and table into the equation. If you don't have a comfy (and supportive) chair you will hate to sit down and play games. And if your desk is too low, too high, too cramped, you'll notice it far sooner than you think.

I know it seems obvious, but don't neglect these two insanely important peripherals.

A few tips 1. Make sure the desk isn't too low that it's knocking your knees, nor too high that you have to have your arms in an awkward position. The ideal height, when combined with your chair, should allow your wrists and forearms to rest completely on the table surface. 2. Try to have a desk with "tiers" can help with clutter, control speaker placement, and also keep your monitor higher up (many people keep their monitors too low, causing a lot of neck strain) 3. Get a chair that is comfy above all else. Don't look at a chair and say "oh it's $300 it must be good" go to your local office store and start there. Don't get a cheap plastic chair. Your back and butt will thank you when you're 60. 4. Swivel chairs are superior to static feet chairs, especially if you're gaming on a larger (or ultra widescreen) monitor. You never notice just how much your body turns with your head, and if you can keep your body in line as much as possible, you won't get fatigued as much.

Obviously a new desk and a new chair can be an even bigger investment than a PC, due to just how much space it takes up, but it does go a long way towards enjoyment of pc gaming. If you can't afford, or simply don't have the resources otherwise, here are a few things to keep in mind with your current desk/chair setup

    1. Make sure your chair is high enough to comfortably manipulate your mouse and keyboard, but not so high as to lift your heels off the floor. You should be able to keep your feet flat on the floor, that's a good chair height.
    2. Larger tables are always going to be better than smaller, and keyboard drawers are a wonder. If you have a desk with a keyboard drawer, and you can sit at it comfortably with the drawer extended, use it. It keeps the monitor at proper eye level, while also keeping you at a better eye distance from whatever screen.

Note on "gaming chairs" I have one, it's a Noble Icon. It's nice. The cushion is stiff for my liking, but honestly I got it for posture. I don't slouch in my chair nearly as much, and it's easier (I'm not saying it will all the time) to keep my back straight. But it is also expensive and not for everyone. But you are better off going to your local Staples/home Depot and getting a standard mesh office chair than you are that older leather lazy boy you wheel around. Your back will thank you.

Lastly, always remember to take short breaks every hour or so. Even if it's just a pacing back and forth in the room. Oh and don't forget to hydrate

    Keep gaming friends!

Edit: these tips are general due to the very nature that desks and chairs fit everyone differently and my experience is more than likely going to be very different from yours. Even if you disagree with my reasons, I hope we can agree that your chair and desk can be just as important for long term gaming enjoyment as anything in your PC tower and should never be neglected

Edit 2: as mentioned in quite a few comments, a good chair and desk are very much long term investments. Not long term purchases, investments. By getting a good chair with good ergonomics, you are saving yourself a lot of pain and medical bills later on in life. By having a desk that fits to you, you can help prevent neck and eye strain, carpal tunnel, etc.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:02 PM PDT

Ok so I've been doing research about getting a pc and I've learned that building one myself is the best bet I don't know anything about building pcs or much about it in general so I came here. My budget for the pc itself is $750 I also don't have a monitor so my budget for that is $200. Any help or tips in general would be greatly appreciated so thank you for whatever you tell me.

The cheapest basic monitor, or the cheapest curved monitor. Pretty much same price and both 144 hz.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 07:17 AM PDT

I've been planning to get a 144 hz monitor now but my problem is what should I get.

I found 2 monitors from the same company, one is basic and one is curved. The basic is 140 bucks while the curved is 145 bucks

Now the problem is what should I pick? It looks like the curved has a much better stand and it's adjustable while the basic one has a shitty looking stand. The curved one also has a 165 hz option.

Should I pay 5 more and try to get used to the curved, or buy the basic monitor?

After few months of saving and reading about computer parts this is my first PC build. Suggestions are highly appreciated!

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 03:04 AM PDT

Hello everyone. I've been lurking in this sub for a while and I decided to post my parts list.

I'll be using this build mainly for gaming but also some lightweight programming.

    Parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HVGCbh

I also want to buy RTX 3060 TI / RTX 3070 / AMD's equivalent. I can't buy new ryzen 5000 series because I don't have enough money. Do you think ryzen 5 3600 will be enough for maybe 3 years?

    Thanks in advance. :)

Would a fan under my GPU help with temps?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:34 PM PDT

So, I have a blower style GPU (MSI Aero GTX 1080), and my case is the Inwin 303, which in addition to 3 top mounted fan slots, has slots for 3 more fans on the bottom of the case, including one that's situated right under my GPU's blower fan, and I'm wondering would placing an intake fan there help lower my temps in any way (the idea being that the GPU would be sucking up cold air to vent). Sorry if this is a stupid question, but just want to know if this is even viable in any way before I shell out money for another 120mm fan.

    GTX 1080 worth it?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:20 PM PDT

I'm currently running a 970 and it's really starting to show it's age even at 1080p. Now, I found an open box 1080 for 300$ (USD) which it around my limit. The next closest thing I've found is a 2060 for about 320$. My target is 1440p 60fps (I'm using the tv I use with my xbox). Any input is highly appreciated. I'm pairing it with a Ryzen 5 2600 btw.

    Did I f*ck up?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 11:28 AM PDT

Hey y'all, I recently built a PC for around $1200. The build has a 1660super in it. It turns out i spent way too much on the motherboard, and should have gotten a better graphics card, I just didn't want to deal with doing a bios update for an old x470 or b450 board. So my question is, did I fuck up?

BIOS for motherboard for new build with Zen 3 CPUs

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 02:12 PM PDT

I have been looking at building a new build gaming pc for around $1100 and with the new AMD Zen 3 chips coming out on November 5 and the scores they get on passmark, they seem worth waiting for.

However, from what I have read, none of the motherboards that are currently available have the right BIOS installed out of the box in order to be compatible with the Zen 3 CPUs. It appears that the BIOS firmware would need to be updated after purchase. To do this it appears that you need to have a PC in which to install the motherboard for flash updating. This would be my first PC build and I currently do not have an old one to connect the motherboard to and update the firmware.

Is there a way to update the BIOS without a pc myself or ortherwise? Is it worth the effort for the new chips, or better to use older models in a similar price bracket? Thanks, and any other advice also appriciated :)

    Secret gaming on work laptop

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 01:36 PM PDT

I have a Dell Precision laptop for work with a real graphics card, not an integrated thing. I'd like to use it for gaming outside of office hours, but I don't want to have the games show up as installed applications.

Can I run a second version of Windows off to the side on an external drive and have all the games also on that drive? So when I'm ready to game I can reboot the computer and run everything off the external drive?

What hardware would you recommend for this?

    Thanks!
