    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

For 3 years I wondered why my computer fan was so loud.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 07:08 AM PDT

I cleaned out of all of the dust multiple times and the fan was still very loud. In the end I gave up and just thought my fan was loud by default. Today I decided to check my bios and saw that my fans had been on 100% for all this time, I have now switched it to standard and my PC is now half as loud. I am an idiot.

TIL: USB 3.0 may interfere with nearby 2.4ghz wireless devices

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:34 PM PDT

Since I upgraded to this new case I was having problems with my wireless mouse. The last few days it was fine but this evening it started again. It's this super annoying thing where my mouse stutters like hell. Anyway, I thought back a few hours to remember what I might have done to trigger it again, then it occured to me that I plugged a USB 3.0 drive into the port right next to the receiver of my mouse. I unplugged it and voila, it's all gone.

Then I googled it and turns out it's a documented phenomenon that USB 3.0 can and does cause interference in the 2.4ghz band. I can even reproduce it. The mouse starts acting up again when I plug in that USB drive and push some bits through the connector.

Sharing it here because imo this is useful information.

    https://www.bluetoothandusb3.com/the-explanation

    https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/white-papers/usb3-frequency-interference-paper.pdf

edit for all the "could this be causing my particular wireless problem" comments: The majority of wireless devices out there use the 2.4ghz band due to licensing regulations. X360 controllers, Dualshock controllers, wireless headphones, bluetooth dongles, proprietary receivers of logitech or whatever, wifi antennae, cordless phones, lots of things. So yes, it could very well be causing that problem with your wireless thingy.

Building my first PC, thanks to this subreddit!

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 07:26 AM PDT

I just wanted to post and thank all the hard working people who helped my wife and I start on our dream of starting our build. Ive been going at it for almost 8 hours, taking these slow and enjoying every moment of cable routing and making sure I don't bust something. My life was pretty empty and unfulfilled after being diagnosed with liver failure and given 5 years to live and this finally gave me something enjoyable after being pretty much in quarantine since February. You guys have no idea how grateful I truly feel.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:18 AM PDT

Hi everyone! My whole life Ive always played PlayStation and Nintendo, but I want to get a PC now. I was wondering if you guys could help me with building a PC because I have no idea where to even start. My family doesn't have that good of internet and we have atleast 5 people using it all the time. I would like a PC that works well so I can edit videos, Live stream and I also want to be able to play games that I cant play on Playstation or Nintendo. Do you guys have any PC suggestions on where to start and how to start building it? Maybe a guide? I have no idea what to do. I'm willing to spend 1 thousand dollars or 2 thousand dollars it doesnt matter I just have to try and save up money and earn how ever much I need. Thank you for taking your time to read this

    First build, Thermal Paste?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 08:05 AM PDT

Do I need to buy thermal paste or something equivalent or does it come with new cpu? Ryzen 3600, MSI b450 Tomahawk Max, Gigabyte 5700xt, 16gb 3600mhz Adata Ram, Corsair 650w Gold Fully Modular Power Supply and Phanteks p400a digital case using stock case fans and stock cpu cooler. Was told adding exhaust fan to this build and case does nothing for thermals.

What a day, don’t make this mistake

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 12:37 PM PDT

Just got an MSI b550m Bazooka motherboard with a Ryzen 3600, it's a build I'm doing for my parents to replace an ancient Athlon build I did for them YEARS ago.

Now, I've built many a PC over the years and never have had that much trouble, until today!

So my first feck up for whatever reason was that I got it in my head that the 3600 had integrated graphics. This was temporarily important as it would have allowed them to use this until I give them my 1080 if I ever bag a 3080 (my nephew can use it to game in it).

So I build the pc, plug the hdmi cable in, turn it on and it all works except I get a black screen.

Those led to a good hour of mucking around with various HDMI and DisplayPort cables to no avail.

Scratching my head I take to the Internet looking for MSI issues with black screens and it turns out there's a lot of them. The solution (at least to those who actually have integrated graphics) is a BIOS upgrade.

So I thought I'd do the same and this is where the excrement hits the fan.

In the video from MSI explaining how to do a BIOS upgrade, your supposed to download the bios to a USB stick and put it into a special USB port on the back of the board and hit a flash bios button. Only, they recommend that you don't have the CPU or memory etc installed when you do that. (quite cool actually and it works).

So I go to take off the AMD fan that I had installed atop the cpu about an hour and a half earlier with its stock CPU paste about to be ruined, but I find that the CPU paste was so strong that it had stuck to the top of the CPU itself.

So I'm attempting to ease off the fan, and not really putting that much pressure on it (honestly) when the whole lot comes out, that is CPU AND FAN.

It takes a minute to sink in, there's the fan and the CPU stuck FAST to the bottom of it, but the cpu clamp is still down on the mobo.

    That's not good.

So I then spend about another 5 mins twisting and turning the CPU to get it off this fan and eventually I manage, mainly by sliding it horizontally off the bottom of the fan I'll add, I couldn't get it off vertically.

It's then I notice bent pins on the base of the CPU and I'm thinking at this point that I'm totally friar tucked.

So I get the smallest screwdriver I can find and try and bend the pins back into place (there were 2 or 3) but I'm finding that as I fix a pin I'm inadvertently bending the one next to it and at this point I'm ready to throw it at the wall but desperately trying to keep my cool as I'm telling myself I'll need to spend another couple of hundred on a new CPU otherwise.

So I'm sat there looking at it thinking how the feck am I going to fix this, I need something really small like a pin or something, that's strong enough to bend the CPU pins.

It was then I had about the only smart thought I've had all day, I grabbed a small safely pin and pulled the pin bit back so I've got a handle and a pin and I found that I could run the length of the pin end through the gaps between the pins and just push it through, straightening all the pins as it went. I couldn't believe my luck that it was working.

When everything looked straight(ish) again I tried to put it in the slot and after a couple of attempts it went in, so I closed the latch to straighten all the pins right up with the motherboard socket then took it out to check nothing had got totally bent. Miraculously, all was good.

So I updated the bios, reseated the CPU (with some fresh paste), put it all back together and crossed my fingers.

The onboard LED's showed the CPU passing test but still black screen. It was shortly after I realised my integrated graphics mistake.

So, hope you all have better luck than me today! FML!

    Is My Ram Dead?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:41 PM PDT

Im building a pc, I have a B550 Tomohawk Motherboard, and im using G.Skill 16GB (2 x 8GB) Ripjaws V Series ram. When I turn on the pc, the fans spin up and everything but thats it, nothing on the screen and an LED light goes on on the motherboard labed DRAM. Ive googled it and it says it means there is a problem with my ram. I've tried everything. Changing ram slots, 1 at a time, resetting cmos battery. And nothing has worked. So, is my ram dead?

    1440p or 4K - Can I run it?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:34 PM PDT

So i just recently purchased a Samsung Odyssey G7 27 and overall I've been happy enough - Though I can't stop thinking about, what it'd be like to play 4K games on a 4k monitor - and have therefore considered returning it.

As a gamer, I don't play a lot of competitive games, but I prefer single-player games with beautiful graphics - And I've almost always played with an FPS around 60 - Given these facts, I've started to think that a 4K monitor and 4k monitor might be better for me. I've seen 4k gaming with my own eyes, so I don't know to which degree it's different from 1440p.

However, I'm not quite sure whether or not my PC can handle 4k gaming - Which is why I'm here.

    My PC's specs are:

Intel Core i7-8700K 3.7 Ghz processor

    GeForce GTX 1060 5GB (RTX 3080 TUF Gaming - 10 GB GDDR6X)

    32 GB Ram

I know my current graphics card (GTX 1060) isn't nowhere near strong enough - But as I'm considering purchasing an RTX 3080 when it releases in my country, for the purpose of this discussion, please consider that I've something like an RTX 3080.

As for my monitor options, I've considered a budget-friendly option:

    ASUS TUF Gaming VG289Q - LED-skærm - 28" - 3840 x 2160 4K @ 60 Hz

    My questions are therefore:

Whether or not my potential system with the RTX 3080 can run 4k and if the budget friendly ASUS monitor is a good option for 4k - Or should I wait with 4k?

Hope this is sufficient info; I hope you'll offer your opinion and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

    RTX 3080 underperforming

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 09:00 AM PDT

So I was able to get a gigabyte vision 3080 oc. I installed it and I am getting around 100 frames when playing warzone when Id get around 140fps with my 2070 super. Saw multiple benchmarks videos on youtube and they get around 150 frames with similar setups. I did the ddu to completely wipe out previous gpu drivers from the 2070. I am using 2 separate psu cables to power the 3080. I don't know why am I getting lower frames than my 2070 super.

    Setup

    CPU: I9-9900k stock

    Motherboard: B365M DS3H WIFI

    Memory :ADATA 8 GB {2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2666 CL19

    GPU: GeForce RTX™ 3080 VISION OC 10G

Case: Thermaltake Level 20 MT ATX Mid Tower Case

    PSU: Seasonic FOCUS GX-750

Edit: So after downgrading the drivers it seemed to put me at 30fps improvement meaning I'm at a average 130fps. I'll upgrade my motherboard and ram because people are saying that it could be cause of why I'm not getting the most out of the 3080 it will take some time but thats what everything takes. Thanks everyone and hope the best for you guys. Will update after upgrades.

    Amd Ryzen 5 3600 vs 7 3700x vs 5 5600x

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 08:52 AM PDT

    Hello guys, o/

so I actually stuck now with unopened amd 5 3600x. I still have window while I can return it.

Actually ordered it before AMD event.

And now already get whole parts, and noticed that there is zen 3 architecture (facepalm)

So I really wonder which processor I should get, anyhow I'm willing pay bit more for 5 5600x but in same range is 7 3700

    I'm so confused suggestions???

I need cpu that would be able do couple tasks, small rendering, and ofc some gaming, some video editing maybe sometimes streaming.

Anyhow I got already board 570x also.

Just ordered the Gigabyte 3080 OC Edition, Do i need to buy a cooler?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 07:12 AM PDT

Hello! Im not really that good with computer stuff but recently upgraded and bought a whole new rig.

    I have the AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

    32GB RAM

    1TB 970 EVO

    X570 ASUS TUF MB

    RM750X Corsair PSU

I currently have a 1050 TI SSC GTX. The only thing im upgrading is the graphics card. Do i need to buy a cooler for the 3080 or will i be just fine. Assuming i run games like cyberpunk on ultra settings and valorant and warzone/cod

I didnt overclock my CPU btw.. Idk if its worth overclocking. I dont think i will mess with overclocking the gpu since it came overclocked already as well.

Are you gonna use a gpu brace / support bracket for the 3080 ?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:57 AM PDT

Especially for bigger ons like strix and aorus ?

Manual of msi unify z490 mobo states to use one when installing heavier cards.

But the pcie slot is metal like and looks quite sturdy and most cards itself very rigid.

Could also be a way to sell their msi gpu bolsters, which are explicitly named in the manual.

    Dunno

    What's your plan ?

(for when the card finally arrives in 2021 😉)

I'm kinda going crazy my PC doesn't boot no matter what I do

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:54 AM PDT

    Parts list

Motherboard: MSI Tomahawk b450 Max (Old: Asus Z170-A)

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (Old: i5 7600)

    GPU: RX480

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance 3200

A couple of days ago my PC just shut down as if the electricity was shut down. After that it would only start after I turned the PSU off and on again. The Screen was still black though and I couldn't even get into the BIOS.

I tried using the integrated graphics and tried using one RAM stick in all the different slots. I switched the PSU. I reset the BIOS. Still nothing.

I thought I shorted my motherboard and decided to buy a new CPU and motherboard because those were old anyway.

Sooooooo the new parts arrive and it still doesn't work. I even tried an ultra old GPU with the new parts and it still doesn't work. All the fans are spinning and my keyboard lights up.

The CPU debugging light shortly lights up and then the VGA debugging is on for a while after that the boot light lights up

I'm kinda going crazy. The only part I haven't changed are the RAM sticks and I don't have any compatible ones. I have no clue what to do.

Wraith Stealth Cooler not screwing in

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 12:19 PM PDT

I don't have a problem but I'm writing this in case someone else does. If you happen to need to remove and then reinstall your cooler, and when you go to reinstall it, the screws don't move down, this is for you. Make sure your motherboard's backplate is secured behind it. I spent like an hour trying to screw in my cooler and just realized that the backplate was still in the case and not on the mobo box where I was working. I know this is kind of stupid but just another thing to check before you go around ordering replacement parts.

First build ever - a bit of an overkill?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Hi, I'm about to build my first PC ever as up until now I've only owned laptops and currently an MSI gaming laptop.

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/gwC8Yg my part picker

I'm currently playing Warzone and CS:GO but I intend to try other games too; I also do some web design and light graphic design sometimes. The list is not complete as I haven't picked a monitor and a PSU. My questions are:

    1. How much power for the PSU
    2. Is the processor and the GPU an overkill? I intend to play 144Hz and I want HIGH fps.
    3. I get this compatibility note but I can't seem to understand it - NZXT H510i ATX Mid Tower Case has a front panel USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port, but the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard does not have sufficient USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Gen 1 headers. The case USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C port will not be usable. ??
    4. Is £ 250 enough for a decent 144Hz monitor?
