This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I got extremely lucky and manged to snag a 3080 but I seem to be getting worse performance on some games than I did with my old 1080ti?! Is it my other parts holding it back?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:18 AM PDT

    My full part list is

    MSI Z270 Motherboard

i7 7700k CPU (OC to 4.8 can't seem to go higher without crashes)

    G.Skill 16GB DDR4 16GB DDR4 3000MHz RAM

    Corsair RM750X PSU

I game on an ultrawide 5120 x 1440 monitor and I know that resolution is extremely taxing so I've lowered it down to 3440 x 1440 and even 2560 x 1440 and I still struggle to get a stable 60fps on games like Assassins Creed Odyssey, Jedi Fallen Order, Warzone (unless I lower the settings massively!)

The only thing I can think of is that it's sever CPU bottleneck but everyone tells me the i7 7700k is still really good?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: So after reading through the comments and doing some testing I think it must be the CPU. I've looked at the stats whilst gaming and all of the demanding games I play like Warzone, AC Odyssey etc the CPU is going right to 100% and the GPU hovers around 60-70% so is that a bottleneck?

[Update] Strange graphics, games crashing SOLVED! :)

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:41 AM PDT

    Build Issue Solved!

So you may recognize the title of this post, I'm the strange graphics/crashing guy, posting about my graphics card issues around here recently. Just wanted to come back and post what finally solved these frustrating issues!

Quick backstory, I built my first (and current) build back in 2017, in the height of the mining frenzy/GPU shortage days (remember that fun, anyone?). I bought my RX580 "new" on Ebay from a 3rd party seller, after buying a legit case that could fit a big card. (Note: that was my first mistake. When you buy from Ebay, or any seller not on the manufacturer's certified resellers list, the warranty period on the card starts from the date of manufacture, not from date of purchase. As such, I got screwed out of a year of my card's warranty.)

However, I decided to keep the card, which benched great and has been terrific since I installed it...until about 6 weeks ago. An issue started to crop up where my games would run ok at first, but inevitably the graphics would break down into something like this: https://imgur.com/a/QPZIYBS. I'd never seen anything like this before, and with a working build, what's my assumption? The hardware hasn't changed, so it has to be a software/driver issue! Plus, a quick look at HWMonitor told me the GPU temps were fine.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the games, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers via DDU, I tried underclocking the card, I even tried rolling back to a previous display driver, thinking the latest ones were broken. Finally, someone suggested the card was experiencing issues with the vram. Since my card was past warranty, I figured if that really was the issue, there was nothing I could do.

So, in a last-ditch effort, I submitted a ticket to AMD's online service request portal. They responded (thanks AMD!) and suggested I put the GPU into another PC and see if the same issues surfaced. I don't have another PC, so I found a local PC repair shop, thinking they must have one.

The technician at the shop asked me when the last time I'd done maintenance on the card was. I stared blankly at him. Uhh, I updated the driver? He explained that these cards needed periodic maintenance, including cleaning and new thermal paste. For $40, he offered to disassemble the card, clean everything, and reapply thermal paste. I figured, well, if this doesn't work, I give up.

IT WORKED. I took the card home and ran a userbenchmark. The results were astonishing:

    UserBenchmarks: Game 54%, Desk 87%, Work 42%

    Model Bench
    CPU Intel Core i5-7500 81.7%
    GPU AMD RX 580 60.2%
SSD Sandisk Ultra II 500GB 104.6%
    SSD Samsung 860 Evo 500GB 491.9%
    RAM Unknown CL16-16-16 D4-2400 2x8GB 72.9%
    MBD Biostar B250GT5

My old 580 was running in the 88th percentile, and I had zero issues with games crashing or strange graphics. After 6 sad weeks, I FINALLY SOLVED IT!

HUGE shoutout to /u/___ez_e___, who was right about the GPU hardware issues and who had many other helpful suggestions that I implemented to boost my PC performance as well. Ty, ty, ty.

TL/DR: My old graphics card was having bizarre performance issues, turns out it needed to be cleaned and thermal paste reapplied. Sometimes it really is hardware, even on an old build with no previous issues.

Thanks to the sub and everyone who commented on my posts!

Built a Gaming PC....now what? (oh, and security)

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:04 AM PDT

OK, I have ordered most of the parts and will be putting together my gaming PC this weekend. There are boatloads of videos on YT on installing/connecting all the parts inside the case. However, I'm having a hard time finding information on what the next steps are and in what order so I don't screw things up. When do I install Windows 10? Do I need to overclock my card? If so, how? What settings do I need to change to optimize performance?

If anyone knows of a video or site that can step-by-step walk me through setting up my PC, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, any recommendations regarding what security software would be best? I'll be using the PC for mostly gaming (90 % of the time) and perhaps watching videos/movies the other 10% and wasn't sure if some are better for gaming pcs than others.

    TIA

Lían Li Lancool II Mesh Performance Fan Placement

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:23 AM PDT

    Possible fan locations

I'm attempting to build my first PC in the Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh Performance and I'm trying to find the most optimal location for intake and exhaust fans.

The case already has two 140 fans in the front for intake and one 120 in the rear for exhaust.

    1) Should I add one or two intake fans directly above the PSU?

    2) What fans would work best for the top of the case (intake or exhaust)?

    Specs:

    • AMD Ryzen 3700X

    • Noctua NH-D15

    • Asus Tuf X570-Plus

    • Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2x8) DDR4 C16

    • WD SN750 1 TB M.2 NVME (2x)

    • RTX 3080 FE

    • Corsair RM 750 W 80+ Gold

    Low/mid-level gaming PC

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:46 PM PDT

I'm looking to put together a low to mid-level gaming PC. Most AAA titles don't really appeal to me honestly, Factorio, Creeper World, and Wesnoth are probably my most played games. But I want to move off the laptop I use for work as it isn't suited for gaming really. With that said, I do want a bit of runway just in case I decide to start playing something newer (RPGs/strategy games mostly). I have a decent enough 24" IPS 1080p 60Hz monitor, so not looking to jump to 1440p or 4k quite yet, but I want to be able to handle 1440p in case I do change monitors.

    Other requirements:

    • 16GB of memory, not going to try to get by with 8GB. I've had 8GB laptops and they were always painful.
    • SSD is a must for storage.
    • Not really interested in overclocking.
    • My internet comes into the house far away from where the computer is, so I'd need wifi somehow (is onboard normal now? or is a PCI-e card better?)
    • With that said, the article at tech buyers guru (https://techbuyersguru.com/750-budget-gaming-pc-build) seemed to match up everything I was looking for and that's what the list below is based on.

Does this look reasonable? Not counting OS and keyboard (since many wouldn't need to buy those), this is a $700 desktop, which seems fairly cheap, but also seems like it would do everything I'm asking it to and more.

Built PC but in game quality seems worse than I expected, am I being unrealistic or have I done something wrong?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:20 AM PDT

    Hi there,

Thank you in advance for any assistance given.

    I've got back into gaming via Warzone on Xbox One and rather than buying a next gen console I decided to make the switch to PC. With the help of a friend, we spec'd the following;

    • Motherboard: ASUS B450-Plus
    • RAM: Corsair Vengence 16GB (2x8) DDR4 3600 MHz
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
    • Storage: Samsung 500GB 970 Evo M.2
    • GPU: Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB WINDFORCE OC
    • Monitor (already had): ASUS VG245

Being new to PC gaming, all the settings for warzone or the GPU are a little over my head but I've tried watching countless youtube vidoes and the FPS seems to constantly drop below 40 resulting in a really laggy game. I've tried using the Nvidia advised settings via the "GeForce experience" application but same reult. Am I simply expecting too much for the spec we put out or missing something glaringly obvious? If any further information is needed, please let me know.

    Cheers

Do you want a text alert when RTX 3080s or something else comes back in stock?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:05 PM PDT

I wrote a bot that will send out SMS notifications when at item comes in stock from Newegg, Best Buy, and Microcenter and I need some people to help me test it. It can currently watch search pages or individual item pages. I want to test out the load and speed with more subscribers, so I can work on releasing this as a tool more people can use.

I built this to give the average person a fighting chance to get items that are in high demand. I just successfully got my first item that I have been waiting to come in stock, the Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh in White for my son's first PC.

I am not asking for anything in return. I first wanted to ask for donations to cover the cost of the SMS provider, but I am going to cover it until the application goes fully live.

FAQs: Yes, this will work for any type of item sold by any of these retailers. No, I will not make you a bot that checks out for you. Yes, it is nearly instantaneous with the item coming in stock. The only delay is the 1 second delay it takes to send a text message. No, I do not make bots to buy out items and sell them on eBay or whatever else.

========EDIT======== This definitely can watch for 3080s and all the new items, but works much better for items that we know will be coming in stock sooner rather than later. If you have something other than 3080s/3090s in your sight, I need your requests too!

How to lower the speed of AIO pump?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:30 AM PDT

My CoolerMaster ML360R AIO liquid cooler is noisy when running at 2200-2400 rpm. I mean the pump. I have already replaced those 3 garbage fans.

So when my PC starts up, the pump runs at this high speed for 30 mins to 1 hour, and I have to endure the high-pitched noise for this amount of time.

After that it will "calm down" and run at a speed between 1600 - 1800 rpm, which is very quiet.

So.. I am wondering if there is a way to make the pump "calm down" at the first place instead of after 1 hour?

    Thanks for any help!

Stupid question but can you use a GPU from a prebuilt in a new custom pc.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:18 AM PDT

I am looking the purchase a GTX 1070 which is currently in a prebuilt pc which I believe is an Acer Predator. I want to install that GPU in a custom pc that I will build, just want to know if it will work and there won't be any sort of lock on it. I know this is a stupid question but just want to be sure before I buy it.

I'm going to buy my first PC and I don't want to make any dumb mistakes

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:48 AM PDT

Hello! I've been thinking about building a PC for a long time, and I think it's time to do it. I have a basic understanding of all the components, but I decided to create my first build from scratch anyway. The thing is that I'm afraid some parts won't work together, or that I'm spending too much on something that I shouldn't. My main focus with this PC is to play some games like Rocket League, Minecraft, or some simple puzzle/platformers, but also (and more important) to do some video editing (probably just 1080p), 3D design (just some low/medium poly animation and sculpting) and photo editing (again, nothing too crazy). If I can also stream some games like the ones named before, I would like to know too. Ok, now I'm gonna proceed to show you what I did and after that I'm going to ask some questions. You don't have to answer all the questions, but even if you can help me with just one, it means a lot and I really appreciate it.

Alright, first of all I want to say that this is a budget build, but don't focus on the price of the components too much because I live in another country and prices are different (just in case it helps with something, I live in Argentina). Also the list may look a little weird because I tried to immitate what I found in the shops on my country with the amazon and newegg stuff, like for example the two separate RAM Memories. Without futher ado, let's start with the questions:

First question: is the motherboard alright? It may sound like a weird first question, but I can't find some answers like: will I be able to use the 5 fans that the CPU and the case come with? Or do I need a different model? And does the WiFi works? Because I know that some motherboards have integrated WiFi, but this doesn't. Is it ok? Do I just need a WiFi adapter? Or do I need a motherboard with WiFi in it?

Second question: since my first focus is digital creativity and not graphic intense gaming, I thought that for programs like Blender or Premiere it's more important to have a better CPU. Am I correct? Or am I just talking nonsense? Either way, is my CPU + GPU combo good for what I want to do? Or which other CPU + GPU combos do you recommend me?

Third question: it's time to talk about the cooling of this PC. Are the 5 fans a good thing? I know that the Ryzen 5 3600 has a stock fan, but since I saw that really cool case (pun intended), I thought that the difference between the one with included fans versus the one without fans wasn't too much, so I went for the 4 fans version. Is that a good decision? Or should I stick to the stock fan and just get the case without the included fans?

Fourth question: do you think that the 27" monitor it's a good size or is it too much? (Or too less). I saw that people recommend 1440p monitors for video editing and stuff like that, but I think those too expensive for my budget. And what do you think about the 75Hz? I think I don't need 144Hz if I'm not playing some competitive shooters, but maybe the 75Hz it's good for Rocket League or some future games. What monitor do you recommend me?

Fifth question: keyboards. I found that Logitech keyboard, but I'm very undecided. While it's a good looking keyboard, and I love all the customization, I don't know if it's too expensive. The other keyboard I found was the Redragon Indrah K555, which in my opinion has an uglier design but has a palmrest and some macros, being a bit cheaper than the Logitech one. As always, what recommendation do you have for me?

I think those are all the main questions I wanted to ask, but I invite you to say anything you want about anything you want. Is the storage enough? Is the PSU too much for everything else? Is something too expensive or too cheap and I should change it? Am I bottlenecking something? Ask away! I would love to talk and know more about this amazing PC building wold! And of course, if you read all of this, thank you so much for taking your time. Have a nice day!

    Stuck between 2 builds

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:47 AM PDT

I'm not very computer literate so these come from looking at other builds and seeing what I liked and didn't like about them. I've heard that Intel is generally cheaper but Ryzen is easier to upgrade or "future-proof". I have nothing to back up these claims tho.

Here's the 2 builds I'm currently looking at, any input is very helpful!

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 12:17 PM PDT

Hey pc redditors! I'm fairly new to gaming on pc and I have this computer and my dad is on my ass saying that the games I play will burn my pc. To be specific I usually stay away from triple hh games and the only game I really play is minecraft with my girlfriend.

    I have a Dell pc and it's a Intel(R) CoreTM) i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz

It has 8 GB of ram too.

I usually play for an hour to three hours daily. Most of the time it's an hour or two and its spread out the entire day.

So my final question is, with my pc burn because I play minecraft or am I okay?

    Thank you!

Not able to boot even with all new (mostly) parts

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:26 AM PDT

I had my pc shipped to NYC and the postal service basically dropped it from the sky onto my apartment.

    Case bent, mono scratched etc.

Original got a CC TO MEM error, got new memory nothing changed, swapped to new mobo kept new memory, and whenever power is supplied to CPU the mobo will attempt to fire up then stop. When it's plugged to anything else the mobo kicks on.

Got a new power supply same problem.

Any tips for where to go from here?

PCIE power cables for GIGABYTE G750H

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:56 AM PDT

Guys I need some help. I've just got my new graphics card which requires at least 2 PCIE power cables. Forking 1 cable into 2 pins doesn't do anything except light up the RGB. I only have 1, I must have misplaced the others as I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Could someone give me an advice on which cables I can buy? I've read that the PSU end of the cable is not standardized.

    Thanks!

Ultra Budget for SIMS and Browsing

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:22 AM PDT

A family friend knows that I built my computer and now wants help with a build of her own. The issue is that it needs to be ultra budget, because she only plays Sims, and general browsing, YouTube, Netflix, etc. I think going with a prebuilt will ultimately be the best option, however I did put together this build. I'm very stressed working under such a tight budget (about $400-$500 CAD) since usually I just solve problems like, "Will I be able to do X with this computer?" by overkilling it. Anyhoo, here is my list, please please please provide any recommendations, I really want to make sure that she gets a computer that she'll love.

Thoughts on my first ever PC build

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 01:58 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/LsChromee/saved/DHzxsY

    Hello all,

I'm finally planning on placing my order for the parts after a long 5-6 years of toying on whether or not I should make this decision.

I've had a Xbox of some sorts for gaming since I was around 8 and have stuck with them ever since, yet I think it's time for an upgrade. My family has always had Apple computers, but all the compatibility issues make me hate them. The build was made by a friend, Im planning on waiting for the 3070 (fingers-crossed I get one) to come out at the end of October.

Please leave any and all thoughts on the build!

    Thanks peeps 🙏

P.S. I plan on playing mostly FPS games with a little Ark and GTA thrown in there!
