    Simple Questions - October 20, 2020

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

When posting your specs, PLEASE tell us more than 16gb DDR4 when you list your RAM.

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 10:02 AM PDT

I run across so many posts where this is the case. If you have two different brands of 1x8gb RAM, for a total of 16gb, this can cause problems. As well as different timings, speed, etc. If you bought two of the same RAM sticks, but didn't buy them in a package together, this can, in some situations, cause problems. Some RAM of the same types will have different ICs, later in productions.

Often an OP will state later on in the troubleshooting process that they bought one stick of RAM at a later date, to "upgrade". We could've helped you figure out that your RAM was not playing nice together much sooner if this was listed.

    Worth upgrading from i5 6600k to Ryzen 5 3600x?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 03:31 AM PDT

Interested in emulating (i5 sucks with rpcs3), playing stuff like doom eternal, cold war, warzone, monster hunter world iceborne, destiny 2, etc. Currently Have 16gb of ram, i5 6600k, 1660 ti. My friend has the same specs that I would have if I got the 3600x and can screenshare games on discord without much preformance loss but when I do it with what I currently have I go from like 100fps to 60ish (and that sucks since I have a 144hz monitor) If so what would be a good motherboard to get with this cpu?

I created a semi-interactive monitor buying guide, and it has helped hundreds of people. Here's hoping it helps more.

It's everything I've learned through countless hours of research. The site is quite easy on the eyes (definitely not a 90s looking site), and has a "checklist" tool that you can use to save all the criteria you want in a monitor. If you have questions on anything, I'm here!

    I Wrapped My PC!

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 10:24 PM PDT

Hi All, here is the link to my original build post -> https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/jcph3h/first_piece_of_equipment_for_my_new_business

Just to summarize, I started my own Commercial Graphics and Sticker company in January (worst time to start a business let me tell ya) and purchased parts to build my first piece of equipment: my work PC! I love anything to do with stickers, graphics, and printing, so I decided to theme the build and my future setup around my company color scheme and printing. My desk isn't neat because I'm in the process of building a new desk, so don't look too close at it.

Coupled with "ink cartridge" RAM sticks, and "ink line" GPU/CPU cables, I decided to template, design, print, and wrap my NZXT H150 computer case, just because it's appropriate to do so given my career. You can't really tell, but it is laminated with a Matte Laminate. Looks way better in person. This is still in the development phase as I have to tweak some of the cut out spots for the front panel buttons, fan openings, and finalize a design. Also, since so many people use this case, anyone think it would be cool to make these available for purchase for the pc-customizing-enthusiasts? I can certainly do that.

Installed new RAM, warzone not working

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:27 PM PDT

So my little brother has a pre built. Couldn't run warzone with 8GB of RAM.

I bought two new sticks of Corsair's vengeance 3200k. 16GB total with both sticks.

Turned off and unplugged pc, I just took his old RAM stick out, put the new sticks in, restarted the system.

It worked fine, till a day later windows had an update, so I updated it for him, restarted, warzone crashes every time he jumps out of the plane.

My theory is it's something to do with the RAM, but every other game he has runs just fine.

Or Radeon software has some window open, but it won't close and can't see it. The only reason I know there's a window is because if I click on the symbol, half of the screen becomes "misty" and I can move that window around, just can't close it or interact with said window.

Edit: I also went and updated all his drivers, nothing helped

Poor GPU Performance after fresh Windows 10 Pro Installation

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 10:45 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rDNr7X

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Did a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro, but now I get stutters in games every four seconds, particularly Call of Duty. Performance in other games like Path of Exiles is also worse after the fresh install

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Removed drivers with DDU and reinstalled, rolled GPU drivers back, did another fresh install of Windows 10 Pro, updated all MOBO drivers, flashed BIOS

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I've tried messing around with Radeon settings, in-game settings, VSync, etc. but still get the same stutter every 4 seconds. The stutter was worse before updating the Intel LAN drivers, but still persists.

Please help, my sanity is at stake.

I'm going to try and see if a friend with more experience than me can come supervise but there's a chance I'll just end up attempting it all on my own. Is this a bad idea? This is my first build and the first desktop I'll have since I was in middle school (my family has been using solely laptops since then) and I'm pretty scared of screwing something up

Did my graphics card just kill two computers?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:44 PM PDT

So for a few months ago my (6 years?) old pre-built gaming computer had this problem where while I was playing video games, usually with youtube running in the background, the screen would start lagging/stuttering and then go black with sound and everything else still running. The only way to fix it was to turn it off. I figured the GPU (GTX 760) was finally dying and looked forward to upgrading when the new ones come out. Then my monitor died. It was a pos office monitor my dad found by the side of the road years ago so I didn't think much of it. I replaced it with a 27gl850. It worked fine but I had the same problem with the screen going black until one day, it stayed black no matter what I did. I assumed it was the gpu but swapping it with another gpu didn't change anything and my friend got my gpu to work on his computer (he didn't test games on it) and the new monitor itself was fine. I don't know what all the specs were off hand but it had a gtx 760 video card, 12 gigs of ram, and an intel i7 sticker on it. I can open it up and try to figure out more specs if that's relevant. So I left it all for dead and just built a new one using my new 27gl850 and my old graphics card thinking it was the only thing I was sure worked and that I should wait for the 3070 to come out.

    My new build:

    Ryzen 5 3600

MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON MAX WIFI ATX AM4

    G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB 3600

    Crucial P1 1 TB SSD

    SeaSonic Focus Plus Gold 750w

I put it all together (my first build) and it all worked perfectly on the first try! Got to bios, installed windows, updated everything etc no problem. I did everything JayzTwoCents said to do in this video Guide: What to do AFTER building your computer…. When I switched my computer from 60 to 120 hz in display settings (going up to 144 wasn't an option for some reason) my computer did NOT like that. At 120 hz my computer would show a red screen for a really long time when turning it on/resetting and getting into bios was impossible. Switching to 75hz made both those problems go away.

Here's when the tragedy occured: I started playing RoR2 with youtube playing and after 5 minutes the screen went black. Just like before with the last computer, sound from youtube and the game was still playing. I went to turn my computer off and on but this time, instead of it fixing the problem or the screen staying black like my last computer, it gets stuck at the msi logo loading screen, or what's supposed to be the loading screen except it doesn't display the logo properly.

I have no idea what to do other than buy a new GPU and hope that solves everything. I'm terrified I just wasted my new computer. Please help!

Is it ALWAYS “worth it to wait”?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 09:05 PM PDT

    Hello all,

After years of dreaming, I've finally decided to bite the bullet and build myself a high end gaming PC. I've been reviewing sources and videos to get an idea of exactly what I'm looking for, and have gone with what I think is a decent chunk of money for my budget ($3000 CAD). With a budget this high, I'm terrified of wasting it (although some might say that's realistically already a waste lol). Anyway, it seems every year has some "revolutionary" advancement in PC technology that makes the previous generation of that specific piece of hardware effectively obsolete. I know thats obviously not the case as people get many years of use out of their builds, but it still looks like there's always that one component that can extend your PCs period of high end usability by juuust a little bit (RTX 30 series and Zen 3 for example). I want to know how "worth it" it is to wait forever to get a 30 series card, or Zen 3, or whatever new and improved component is set to release. Are this years new components that much more of an upgrade than the previous advancement?

    GPU Recommendations

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I was planning on waiting for the 3070, but seems like the 3000 series have low supply compared to the high demand, so it'd be almost impossible to get it at launch. Does anyone have recommendations for a cheap and good GPU as a stand in for 6 months -1 year until the 3070 is more accessible?

I have an i7-9700k and 16GB RAM. I'm looking to play a lot of fps games if this helps with recs.

I 'want' this sound card; do I need this sound card?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:59 PM PDT

I'm planning a new build and have a question regarding a sound card.

The build will use the ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme w/ WIFI - ATX motherboard and I have been told that the onboard sound is sufficient for listening to music. However, I'm a bit of an audiophile, use my computer for listening, and appreciate the best quality sound (I can get from a computer) when listening to music. I have a set of Audioengine A5+ speakers as well as an S8 sub. The card I was considering for this build is the ASUS ESSENCE STX II 7.1.

Is adding this sound card an unnecessary expense or a worthy investment for listening to old Glenn Gould records :)

I wanna build my first pc but I’m totally lost

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 07:27 AM PDT

Hello everyone! After years of being stuck on consoles I want to finally upgrade to a gaming pc, the only problem is everything feels absolutely overwhelming and I'm not sure what I'm doing.

I guess my first question is what's a good starting motherboard? From what I do understand the build should revolve around the motherboard, I'd like to be able to run modern games and stream but I don't need to push every thing to max settings, though I know that has to do more with what kind of graphics card I get.

I guess I'm just really looking for guidance here lol any advice, experience, or online tutorials for an absolute entry level beginner would be overwhelmingly appreciated! ❤️

    TV or Monitor?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 04:15 AM PDT

So I want a display next to my bed where I can play some games on and watch tv/netflix. I just don't know what to buy. I am going to try to get a 3070 when they get out but then my question is: should I buy a tv or a monitor? and what for resolution tv/monitor. I am going to watch from around 1.5 to 2 meters. So what should you suggest?

    Excessive temperatures for CPU, Help?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 02:14 PM PDT

Just upgraded my older pc with a 3800x. I have not overclocked it. It is currently reading that it is fluxuating between 50-60C idle on HWmonitor and the Asus board monitoring software. Any ideas would be really appreciated.

    I have a 360 mm aio liquid cooler, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085RWWXW4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

    Fan setup:

2 240mm fans in the front of the case pulling air in.

3 120mm fans pushing air out (cpu rad)

1 120mm rad cooling the 1070 in the top, back pushing air out.

Note: I have no place to put fans on the top of the case. It is glass on the side and top.

    Edit: Found the case.
