    Simple Questions - October 18, 2020

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

If you're on a budget, get an airflow focused case!

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 02:40 AM PDT

I've recently built 2 PC's for friends, both had the same budget so I recommended almost identical components for them. (R5 3600, RTX 2060, 2x8GB Ram 3200mhz cl16)

I've recommended a couple cases for them as well, that didn't break their budget of 800€ and were good performers regarding airflow, but one of them wanted a more aesthetically pleasing one/didn't like mesh designs.

They both use the stock cooler and have 2 fans in their system as of now, but one of them has the Corsair 275R Airflow while the other went for a MSI case with suboptimal airflow.

The Corsair's temps are sitting at 60-69C° under load for both CPU and GPU while the MSI get's noticeably hotter (around 70-77 for GPU and 75-80 for CPU).

My point is, if you're on a budget, you don't want to spend more on fans and aftermarket coolers, airflow should be the focus when choosing a case.

Good choices would be the P300A, P400A and P500A from Phanteks, the Silverstone Fara R1, the Coolermaster NR600, TD500 mesh and H500, the Fractal Meshify C, the Corsair 275R Airflow and 4000D Airflow, the Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh and the be quiet! Pure Base 500DX depending on your budget.

Pressure-Optimised or Airflow-Optimised Noctua Chromax 120mm Fan for small mATX case?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 10:54 AM PDT

    Hi Guys

So I have an mATX build that uses a restrictive case (a Power Mac G4 mATX conversion to be precise), and I wanted to buy some Noctua Chromax 120mm Fans for the case, and I just wanted to know if I should be going for a Pressure-Optimised or Airflow-Optimised Fan configuration for the two case fans? One fan will be on the bottom of the case drawing air from underneath, and the other on the side using the original fan housing that the case came with. I see a lot of conflicting information about which one to go for, so I thought I would ask on here.

I am aiming for a quiet build with this system, but the case is a bit restrictive with cooling, so I don't mind sacrificing a few db if I'm going to have a cooler system.

Build is a Ryzen 5 3600, MSi B550M Mortar, 16GB RAM, RTX 2070 Super OC, TX650M PSU. I'm going to be using the stock cooler for now, the largest air cooler that will fit is the Noctua NH-L12S, and they don't recommend over clocking with that cooler, so probably won't bother unless the stock cooler is super loud!

    Thanks in advance :)

I can finally afford a second hand gtx 750ti to complete my first ever build

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 07:06 AM PDT

It's a ryzen 3 2200g bought off of a decomissioned internet cafe with 8 gb ram, a generic psu and a 500gb hdd. Since my laptop (an acer aspire) just went kaput after 7 years of using it I had to have a replacement rig ASAP for classes. I have been quite a tech geek but i never actually got to build a pc since a laptop is preferred back then, and since i didn't have enough money for it. But now, here it is I used an old red fox micro atx case that used to have an amd athlon 64 x2 way back from my brother's old PC and some old 80 gb hard drives, and i actually upgraded it to have a true rated psu and 16gb of ram, also added an ssd boot drive and a 120mm rgb fan (you know that life). The 750ti was actually a dream of mine when i was in 9th grade (i am now in college) I used to stare at it every now and then and dream of 60 fps when I pass by the store. With a stroke of luck, I found someone selling one for a very reasonable price in facebook marketplace and safe to say I didn't let it go. I just wanted to share this with you guys to remind you that it's not too late to achieve the dreams of your youth, for me is when it comes to computers. I actually feel genuine happiness when i finished this build, kind of like reuniting with a long lost brother that you know that's here to stay.

    First build!

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 07:59 AM PDT

I built my son his first gaming PC last night. It was my first ever build. Nerve wracking, but nothing like the feeling after everything boots up properly! My cord management could use some work. But I will take this as a good experience and hope that in a few years, my son will want to build his own so we can do it together (he's only turning 7, early birthday present for him).

Is it worth it to just get Ryzen 3rd gen

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 09:50 AM PDT

I'm building my first pc and all my parts are here exept my cpu and gpu. I am going to wait for a restock for the 3080 and I'm not sure about a cpu. I'm looking to get a 5900x or possibly a 5800x, I'm waiting for a restock for a 3080 because it's been out for a month so it will restock soon enough. But I'm not sure about just settling with a 3900x/3700x, because I know 4th gen will be way better. However I don't want to wait so long because a 3080 took this long, so a 4th gen chip could take ages!

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I want to use it primarily for gaming at 1440p/144 Hz as the title says. I will also use it as my primary computer and perhaps do some occasional coding and Solidworks on it.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1440p/144 Hz full settings

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1400

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Pure Rock Slim 35.14 CFM CPU Cooler

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I already purchased a Dell S2721DGF (needed a nice monitor for working from home anyway) and I'm happy with my other peripherals as they are. I'm not really sure about memory or CPU coolers, as those have so many options I don't really know how to choose.

Best time to build a pc?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 12:37 PM PDT

I have a few $k and want to build a pc, likely within the next 6 months. I was originally planning to do it now. Then I saw the new AMD cpus are coming out next month, and then I saw that the new AMD socket is coming out likely next year, and so on.

I want to build a future-proofed gaming pc that's going to last at least 4 years, so when would be the best time to strike?

Never messed with any of it before, but a ton of research later and many YouTube videos from JayZTwoCents, Joey Delgado, PC Centric, and many others, and I acquired all parts and assembled myself. [Build Ready] My Reward PC after an overseas deployment.

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 04:34 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

I'm just about ready to build my new gaming rig. This was my splurge purchase of 2020, and a reward for a successful and safe military deployment overseas. I hope this will last me for many years to come. I don't have a new GPU because I have not yet managed to snag a 3080 or 3090. Because of this, I've no choice but to reuse my old faithful GTX 1060 which is definitely going to struggle to push frames on my new 4k144hz monitor. If anyone knows when some 30xx series GPUs might come in stock please let me know. If anyone has info on when the Asus ROG STRIX 3080/3090 will be in stock *pleeeeeaaaassseeeeeee* tell me because I'm desperate to relax and let this bad boy lose while on leave. I will be posting photos and possibly a video showcasing the build once it is finished. Once I move into my new apartment this November, I will also be posting a full and in depth battlestation/setup tour. Thanks /r/buildapc!

It ain't much, but it's honest work

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 06:04 AM PDT

I just completed my new rig! It's replacing my old i5-3570K which served me really, really well for the last 8 years, and will continue to help out the wife for many more years to come.

It took me a really long time to decide to buy it, but when I did, it was really quick to put the parts list together and press the purchase button. I was really confident about it, mainly because of all I've learned from reading posts here daily for 6 months, and all the videos I watched from GN, Jayz, and Iskandar Souza (from Brazil).

Putting it together was much easier than I thought. First I assembled the rig bare bones on a table, on top of the motherboard box, Jayz style, and it posted the first time. Then building onto the case took a bit more time, with the case being smaller than the previous one and all. Took the time to do some minimally neat cable management and added an RGB LED strip for the additional FPS!

The rig is far from complete, really. I reused the GPU from the old rig and some storage that was laying around unused. I'll now look into upgrading the GPU, hopefully for a RTX 3070, and to replace the monitors. I know I've build it the other way around (monitors last), but that's life.

Big shout out for the kind folks from this sub, who helped me a lot, and from which I learned most of what I know about PC builing!!

Here are the rest of the pictures:

PS.: Don't mind the giant plush turtle next to it. It's the wife's.

    Decent case fans?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 03:40 AM PDT

    **** EDIT ****

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions! I decided to got with the Artics PWM in the end :)

    Hello there,

Can anyone recommend any decent case fans?

One of my current stock fans (that came with my case fractal design r6) is making a cranking noise that goes after it gets up to speed. I'm looking to upgrade these, to ones that are decent for air flow and are fairly quite.

    Thanks in advance :)

Pc Powercycling, exhaust fan not working and GPU fans going crazy. Display also won't turn on. Please help!

I literally have no idea what happened. I shut down my PC, unplugged everything, and went to unscrew the AIO to take a look at it after someone said i installed the fans incorrectly. I rescrew in everything, plug in/reconnect everything and this is the result.

I am at a compete loss as to whats going on. Literally any and all help is appreciated!

    Best time to buy?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:44 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I was planning on buying a PC in September and was doing constant research on what to look for, what parts are compatible, etc. However, someone told me it was better for me to wait until October otherwise my hardware was going to be outdated pretty quickly. I want to ask you, where do you get all the information on all releases are coming out.

If anyone is curious on what I want to do with the PC is to stream games like CSGO and Ark. The budget is £800-900.

Not sure if I should go with a pre-built or not

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 11:41 AM PDT

I've been wanting to get into pc gaming further than just cheap laptops that I never take anywhere, and in a few months I'll finally have a decent abount of money to spend on getting an actual desktop pc, but having zero experience in building a pc and nobody around me that's done it either, spending $1k+ seems like an even more daunting task, so I'm beginning to lean towards getting a pre-built that I know will work and adding in some smaller upgrades to it.

TLDR, I'm looking for a reliable pre-built pc that I'd be able to add on to, any ideas?
