    Simple Questions - October 14, 2020

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I want a lag free Office productivity multitasking machine. What specs matter for the CPU?

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 07:28 PM PDT

If one wants very snappy bootup times + opening up browsers + fast software opening + snappy MS Office, what are the CPU specs to look for?

    1. Is it the number of cores/threads that matters most?
    2. Or is it the Clock speed? or boost speed?
    3. What about the IPC?

I get that generally, as time goes by for new processors, # of cores increases, clock speed increases, IPC improves. But not sure how that works when I'm shopping for 1-3 year old last gen processors.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I have an NVME SSD + 32GB on this second machine that I'm building for heavy Chrome/Spotify/MS Office/etc.

Do Wireless Keyboard and Mouse make a difference in gaming?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 08:18 AM PDT

I have a wire keyboard and mouse that work good, but would really like to go wireless, but I don't want to do that if there's going to be a weird lag response. Also, does it make difference between using USB vs Bluetooth? I've seen a few Bluetooth keyboard/mouse and wondered if they functioned better than USB wireless keyboard/mouse. I mainly just want to know what I need to look for when shopping for one so that way I can choose if I want to get something that has all the bells and whistles (RGB, loud keys, etc) or go on a budget and just get what I need for performance.

    GPU pair — Ryzen 7 2700

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 11:37 AM PDT

    Hello

What GPU can I pair with the Ryzen 7 2700? I currently have a GTX 1650 4gb OC, but I was told that it could be improved/upgraded.

What GPUs can I pair without bottlenecking the system? What's the best one I can choose, or what's a choice I can pick if I'm strapped for cash? (Apologies because I don't have a set budget for now. I just wanna gauge my choices)

    Thanks! :)

Controlling my PC from another room?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 08:01 AM PDT

I have my PC in the master bedroom, but my streaming setup is in the bedroom across from it.

Ive tried using Parsec to remote Into my gaming PC from my laptop but it doesn't always work well.

I had the idea to run an HDMI and USB cable through the wall and play my games that way.

What would I need for that? I'd estimate it's about 15-20 feet between where my PC is and where my other desk is on the other side of the wall.

Here's the list for the build i came up with but if anything that can bring the price or any changes will be grateful an

Should I take a Ryzen 5 3500 or a Ryzen 3 3300x for my casual gaming PC build?

Where should I place the fans in this case for optimal airflow?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 12:31 PM PDT

I have access to four 120mm fans (2 Noctua and 2 that came with the case.

I was wondering where I could place these four fans for the most optimal airflow? And which direction?

There is also an extra place for a fan on the side of the case (the same side I have taken off)

I have circled the spots where fans can fit on the case.

    Ignore the fan already installed.

My board supports 4 fans out of the box.

I've updated all drivers and downloaded the B550 Chipset software for the processor and yet I'm receiving low fps in rocket league. Do I need to oc the GPU in MSI Afterburner or download something else? All help is appreciated.

Lets talk, for real, about storage

    Posted: 13 Oct 2020 11:15 PM PDT

I must read 10 posts a week on here about storage. How much storage do I need, Call of Duty takes up too much storage, nvme drives are important, etc. No one is adequately explaining how storage works and the right way to think about how data reaches the CPU. So here's your one-size-does-NOT-fit-all storage guide.

Pt I. OS and Application Data

Your OS and application are the easiest things to replace, and the least critical part of your infrastructure. If something breaks you can uninstall it and reinstall it and it will cost you nothing but time. So these files live on the top tier of your storage pyramid. You want speed at the expense of reliability. So this is your fast storage tier. Raid 0, NVME, go wild here, push read/writes to the limit because losing data at his tier will cost you very little in the long term. If you do this properly you can restart windows in less than 10 seconds and rebuild after a drive failure in an afternoon. You already own the software license and downloading it again is free, so who cares if there's no reliability in your storage structure.

Part II. Working and Scratch Data

If you're in the middle of a project, that project lives at this tier. It should still be backed up at the end of the workday, but if there is a failure it will only effect today's work and can be easily re-created. This is your middle tier of storage and should operate at medium speed. SSDs are not only good for this, they're recommended. Most productivity applications recommend three hard drives, one for the OS, one for working data, one for scratch (see your application of choice for details). For gamers, today's livestream goes in this tier.

    Part III. Important Stuff

This is for data you want to keep long term. It should be secure, redundant, and backed up. Your current projects live here when you're not actively working on them, along with all of your past projects. OneDrive is great for this, along with any other automatic backup. But if you don't own the server, but you do own the device, consider a RAID 5 array of spinning metal HDDs, or even better, build your own on-site backup server. You don't want speed here. You only want reliability, because this stuff needs to last. This is the tier for all the stuff your boss would yell at you for losing.

    Part IV Business Critical Data

If your boss would FIRE you for losing it, it goes in this tier. This is for cloud storage. Data should be redundant across multiple sites because if you lose this data you CAN NOT FUNCTION. Good rule of thumb is to keep this data locally in a RAID, in offsite backup, and in cloud backup with a reputable provider. For your personal stuff, your resume lives here, alongside your book of business, useful contacts, your birth certificate, your will, and your wedding video. This is for the stuff that you would go back and grab if there was a fire in your home, but you won't have to, because you have backups.

    Part V. Nonsense Archive

We all have an archive like this: Four year old emails from a job you don't have anymore. A text doc of code snippets from 6 projects ago. Last year's calendar. Photos of your cousins wedding where you look like you had too much to drink. All of that data that you wont really miss when it disappears to the ether. This is for a JBOD, or an old hard drive salvaged from an old build. Let this data live for as long as it is supposed to, but don't weep when its gone, because hard drives will all eventually die.

Part VI. How to Implement the Tiers.

You need multiple hard drives (and possibly external enclosures) and partitions. Building a good file structure, even if you're the only one who understands it, is key here. Good place to start? Make a folder on your hard drive with tiers 1-4. How you need to organize your data is best left up to you, I can only tell you how I do it (I'm an IT professional, full-time with one company, part -time consulting). If you think about the tiers, you will be able to prioritize what matters and separate that from what doesn't. When you get to that point, the rest will be automatic and you'll never again need to worry about what you need to buy for your storage needs and how much and so on. Long term, you'll appreciate one or two networked backup drives more then the 10 fps that the same $$ would have bought you in a GPU upgrade.

    All comments and criticism accepted.

    SATA or nvme ssd?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 01:47 PM PDT

I currently have a small (250gb) sata ssd and I'm fine with the speed. I was looking into an nvme because I'm assuming games are going to start requiring them as we move into next gen. That being said, sata is definitely cheaper.

Should I just future proof and go nvme from the start? Or should I go with sata for more storage and upgrade to nvme when it's required by what I play?

    Entry level graphics card

Hello! I am in the process of picking out parts for my first gaming pc, and would like to know what kind of graphics card I should get? I will likely not be playing many AAA titles, but I would like something that could at least run them on low-mid graphics if I choose to actually get any.

    Best GPU for about 400-500$?

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 11:58 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

my friend is looking for a new GPU, because he currently has a GTX950 and you know it's not bad but for the newer singleplayer games like Cyberpunk or Far Cry 6 it would barely make the requirements.

I know GPU's quite well and I know well the NVidia models but I am not really educated in the more detailed specs as I have never quite needed to have the knowledge.

My friend has a Intel Core i5-6600 and 16GB RAM so I think bottleneck shouldn't be a problem (he is planning to upgrade the CPU later on.) but I have no idea which GPU to pick. I was thinking, could I go wrong with GeForce RTX Gigabyte 2060 6GB GDDR6? My friend wants to buy a power supply too, so I thought the Be quiet! System Power 9 700W would maybe be a bit overkill but you know, my friend would rather spend extra 20 bucks on a power supply that is more then enough so he has space for future PC build upgrades. The power supply has a 6+2 pin and the GPU has a 8 pin and I have been told that thats compatible. My friend has a mid tower with an ATX and the case has maximum GPU lenght 430mm and the GPU is 230mm so that's fine.
