This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Insanely grateful to where i’ve gotten in the past 3 months

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:30 AM PDT

So just 3 months ago, I gave my dad the idea of selling my gaming laptop and perhaps building myself a computer to which he quickly rejected, and after a good week of talking he said yes but that he wanted to pay for it, and not sell the laptop because I may need it for college. I built my first PC finding local deals: Offerup, Facebook marketplace, craigslist, and built a $700 PC in under $500 (Ryzen 5 3600, 1650 Super, 32GB RAM, blah blah). My dad told me to sell it to potentially make some money and i did, and built another one, sold it and yet another one, and now i'm around in my area with plenty of people paying me to help them build their PC's which has honestly been the most fun thing i've done in my life. I'm so grateful for what my dad blessed me with and all the things he's done for me. PC building has honestly just changed my life, it's made me feel like i'm actually doing something with my life.

I went from an xbox one to building my own pc and the difference is huge.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:17 PM PDT

When my friends started switching to pc from xbox I did too and the difference is huge!! Like I did not even know some games can load in less than 5 seconds. I have a 970 evo plus ssd and it is so cool to not wait for games to load at all. I can't imagine playing console anymore. I am going to soon get a 240hz monitor since my 60hz is not enough anymore and can't wait for that too.

    X570 Tomahawk vs b550 strip e gaming

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 10:07 AM PDT

Hi I could do with some help with my new motherboard. my motherboard needs; internal usb c, bluetooth, good memory support to support Corsair dominator cl18 3600mhz Ram and good vrm because I want to get the best single core performance out of the processor. I don't plan on running any pci 4.0 drives and if I do it will just be 1 for my OS. My build is purely for gaming (just csgo).

im stuck between the X570 tomahawk and the b550 strix e gaming. Both have everything I want but X570 will allow me to get more pci 4.0 drives that I'll probably never use. but just in case would the £35 saving be worth it for the b550

    Need a new CPU

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:23 PM PDT

I upgraded the graphics card and power supply for a pre-built pc my dad bought me, but the CPU is bottlenecking in games. I'm looking for a CPU that is compatible with my motherboard, and can run upcoming AAA titles at 60 fps, 1920 x 1080.

    CPU: AMD A10-9700 RADEON R7, 10 COMPUTE CORES 4C+6G
    Motherboard model: Aspire TC-281
    BIOS Name: R01-A2
    PSU: Insignia 520w
GFX: Zotac gtx 1060 6gb mini
    RAM: 1 x 8gb 2400Mhz ddr4

I'm mainly concerned about the motherboard + bios not supporting certain CPUs, and if I have enough power to support everything under load.

Building Pc for the first time

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:23 PM PDT

I am going to build a PC for the first time after October 8. So I wanted to know if all the parts I picked are compatible and will work together well. I plane to get cheaper fans and maybe a case because I also have to buy the Windows operating system because I only have a mac laptop. An I fix it kit and a monitor. I am going to buy most of this stuff on newegg. I have like 3,000 dollars to spend on this, but I only plane to spend around 1,800 on the pc once my check clears on October 8. I wanted to know If anyone has suggestions for fans and a pc case.

Are power supplies going to go down in price ever ??

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:27 AM PDT

Old psu I have now has a bad fan and keeps rattling and idk how much longer this thing has to live, and I tried contacting rosewill ( the power supply is a capstone 550m) but no response. I'm looking at new options but they are all almost always above $100 for the decent ones. I just don't want my pc blowing up :(

GoGuardian installed itself on my PC

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 11:47 AM PDT

Alright. I set up my school profile in Chrome on my Windows 10 PC (personal, not affiliated with the school at all), and when finishing a notification popped up (from Windows) that said it was installed as a background app and would run even when Chrome is closed- great. How do I get rid of it? It's not in the background apps list, program manager, app list, or task manager.

    Advice Needed: Upgrading CPU-Mobo-RAM

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 11:14 AM PDT

TL/DR: Upgraded and installed CPU/Mobo/RAM and now want to replace the RAM - should I reset the BIOS and do a clean install of Windows?

TL version: I recently upgraded my 4690K build to a 10700K. Additionally, I got a Z490 Aorus Elite AC mobo and 4x8GB Crucial Ballsitix 3200 CL16 RAM.

I uninstalled the old and reinstalled the new and without doing a reinstall of Windows starting updating drivers and downloading apps to control mobo and RAM lighting.

I then got a M.2 drive to run my boot from and did a clean Windows 10 install.

I'm replacing this Ballsitix RAM because it is RGB and there's too much RGB puke and I don't want to fiddle with oc'ing the RAM.

So, before doing another clean install of Windows on the M.2, should I remove the CMOS battery to return the mobo to factory specs?

    Thanks.

When it comes to budget friendly (around 500USD) is building more cost efficient than buying a prebuilt?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:26 PM PDT

I'm looking at buying/building a desktop that suits my gaming needs (very light stuff like League of Legends, WoW, Overwatch ) and I noticed there are quite a bit of prebuilt computers around 500 usd and seem like good deals. Anyone have any experience with this?

    Edit:

These are the prebuilds I'm looking at:

UPS [uninterrupted power supply] for PCs, question.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 09:34 AM PDT

    Hello,

So, I live in an area that has power outages every now and then [approx 3-5 times a month]. This is due to massive construction plans for the entire city and isnt likely to go away within the next 1 or 2 years.

I was wondering if any body had any experience with UPS [uninterrupted power supply] devices. Anything that can power a single PC for up to 5 to 15 mins. Anybody has personal experience with such devices or info they could share would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks for reading!

I broke a PCIe slot but i was able complete my first build. Thank you guys.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:13 PM PDT

I broke a PCIe slot then I had to cut all tiny pins to avoid short circuit and went on with only one PCIe on board. Thank you guys for the knowledge, advices and inspiration. I appreciate you all.

Lesson learned: 1-Avoid interruption when building. Especially when connecting cables. You need to be 100% focused. 2- never tie screws too hard. Sometimes you need to unscrew. 3- Connect your cables before you insert psu inside the case. 4- when assembling an AIO COOLER, make sure the pump is not hitting mobo. It's damn heavy. 5- To avoid loosing your 2nd M.2 NVME tiny screws, screw it loosely on mobo for future use.

Is there any ETA on when 3080s are going to be fully in stock for the average consumer? I can't seem to find a concrete answer.

Edit: I'm also going to get an nvme drive and I read it's hard to get Windows on and they can have malfunctions easy. I'm a noob, sorry if this is not true.

Upgrade PC or get Xbox One X?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 01:59 PM PDT

    Current system is as follows

    Ryzen 2600X

    RTX 2070 Gaming Z

    1TB SSD

    16GB DDR4 Ram

Most of my games run fine on my 1080p 144hz monitor, but occasionally I like to play on my 4K 60hz samsung TV for couch gaming. There I have to compromise a lot on settings, usually dipping to medium or some at low for things such as Origins, Odyssey, Division 2, Fallout 4. With Cyberpunk 2077, I'm more looking to play on the TV than the monitor. I already have an Xbox One X i can trade in for $200, making the Series X about $300. Is there an upgrade I can make to get a stable 60fps at 4K for $300? Or is simply trading in the One X for the Series X and keeping the PC for high refresh 1080p a better option from a cost perspective?

Edit: Series X, not One X.
