This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Need a 144hz monitor that doesn’t have gaming in the name

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 01:53 AM PDT

My mom is letting me get another monitor because it would be helpful for school and my coding courses. However, my mom would never let me get a monitor that explicitly states it is for gaming in the title but I need an upgrade to 144hz. All the monitors I have found say gaming on them because there is basically no other reason to get a 144hz monitor but you never know! It needs to be 1920x1080 and preferably IPS but I am open for anything. Thank you.

    Ryzen 5 3600 95C at idle

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 11:53 AM PDT

    Hello,

I just bought a Ryzen 5 3600 and installed it with the stock cooler. However when opening the little arm when installing the cpu, I opened it too far and snapped a little piece of plastic. I was used to Intel motherboard which can with a little cover for the motherboard socket and thought this was the same. Does anyone know whether this could be why the processor is overheating ?

I reinstalled the cooler, re applied thermal paste but no result so far and I am worried that the broken piece of plastic might be why it's not cooling properly.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Update: pc shuts down randomly and when it doesn't it shows that the cpu is running 100% on all cores. Maybe a psu issue?

Finally finished up my black and white build

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 01:33 PM PDT

I have been working on this build since ryzen released the first time and badly wanted a complete black and white build, living as student meant it went slow, but it's done now.

At first i had the asrock ab350 pro motherboard specofically for the color scheme, but i lost the board due to power dips at the cheap flat i was renting.

This week i got my hands a really cheap second hand gtx1080 and decided it was time to get the build together. The graphics card was hand painted with acrylic paint that i use for figure painting. And i am really in love with the end result

Should I get a Xbox one X or a small pc case for my build?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 11:24 AM PDT

At the moment I have a pc with a 2070 super, Ryzen 5 3600, and 16gbs of ram. I'm going to college soon and have a very small dorm. Therefore, I need a small pc/console that I play with controller on. Should I get the New Xbox and sell my pc for the size, or just get a small case? Thanks ( I mainly play cod if that info is needed)

Edit: I meant the new Xbox series this December.

What’s the point in buying expensive keyboards/mice?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 12:33 PM PDT

I went the budget option for my setup and decided to buy a better keyboard and mouse later on. But now that I'm using my $25 Red Dragon keyboard and $5 mouse I can't find any problems with the two. I keep seeing keyboards listed in the $70-$100 range and mice between $20 and $60 but what difference do those make?

Looking for a pc case under 100$ or less

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 08:44 AM PDT

I currently have a pretty bad case with only one fan for exhaust, and I can't seem to find any good sub 100$ cases since i live in south east asia, taxes are about 10-20$, the phanteks p500a here is worth about 165$ here, instead of 100$ like in US, and unfortunately can't find any p400a :(

    Ps. Preferably mesh front

Want to build a general home server

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 09:18 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yep, be nice, don't be mean.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. I am a software developer and want to use this as a headless Linux server for photo storage, running software and such. I picked a fast CPU because it may need to run as a k8 worker node (or control plane) in the future. I don't plan for this build to run fast graphics or tensorflow GPU , so this one does not have a graphics card - I made sure to include an integrated chipset so that I can plug a vga in and have access to the bios/bootstrap stuff.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I am looking to replace my current desktop server (5 -6 years old currently and it shuts down randomly - i don't have it mirrored or load balanced so it causes site issues) https://pcpartpicker.com/user/mathlizard/saved/qDVH99

I have a setup that uses tinc to connect to a $5 digitalocean server, and then an nginx proxy_pass to send users to my home machine... it works ... I may switch to wireguard, but that idea is for a different post

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    I'd like somewhere near $800

In what country are you purchasing your parts? USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I want to run some servers on it, possibly through docker-compose , possibly through k8 if I get it setup /running with ingress controllers and such.

This is a programming-centric build, not a gaming one.

    • Are all the parts compatible? I'm assuming they are, just want to be sure.

    • My previous build was huge, I'd like to go with a smaller one - I'm assuming this one is roughly 18" square, but I skimmed dimension reads.

    • How is the power supply? last build I got a titanium 750W supply - I seem to remember that was overkill. This build I used 2 calculators and found that I could use a 300-350W supply and get by with bronze - I picked a custom one from newegg since the micro-atx filter was giving some issues: https://www.newegg.com/fsp350-50sac-350w/p/1HU-0095-000G8

*I also see the micro atx case looks like it is out of stock, here is another similar one: https://www.newegg.com/black-cooler-master-masterbox-lite-3-1-microatx-mini-tower/p/N82E16811119326 with dimensions : 15.00" x 8.23" x 17.96" (which is what I was expecting) This is my first build in awhile, constructive criticism and genuine helpfulness is much appreciated :) I don't mind feeling dumb as long as you're nice about it :D . Thanks!

    AOC CU34G2X worth it?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 11:59 AM PDT

Just built my first pc with a 10700k and waiting on an EVGA 2070 super to arrive. Will this monitor be a good match? Have seen pretty good reviews on it but also some negative comments about some kind of flickering issue which I think has been resolved. Will be playing a lot of flight sim on it. Plan on getting a 3080 wut the step up program at some point. I know there are better monitors out there but don't really want to spend close to $1k. Is this monitor worth the price?

Does anyone know any trustable stores that sell laptop batteries?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 06:27 AM PDT

Trying to buy a battery for my laptop (HP Pavilion), HP spare: 756743-001

I've checked the HP website but they don't sell (just says out of stock), they have a number of affiliated websites for the UK to buy batteries from but it's for trade, not individual customers.

I'm looking for some recommendations to buy laptop batteries from reputable/trustable sites/stores.

Should or should i not upgrade my CPU in 2020? (GTX 1060 6GB)

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 01:45 PM PDT

I built my PC in 2018 and i had a really tight budget, so i gamed on an APU, the Ryzen 3 2200G. In January 2019 i got enough money to buy an used GTX 1060 6GB and i was really happy, even with the slight bottleneck. Then, a few months later, the GTX 1660 launched and i felt like a clown.

The main problem is: i, again, have a REALLY tight budget right now and probably will continue having it for the next few years; i'm a college student with poor parents in an underdeveloped country. I don't have the money to buy an RTX card, and i don't think that the 1660 is a worth upgrade from the 1060. And about the CPU: i can afford a Ryzen 3 3300X or a 3100, and if i plan really hard, i can maybe afford a Ryzen 5 3600. My concerns are: is it worth it or i should save the money?

I'll probably have to cut expenses for months and work really hard for this upgrade on my CPU, so i really wanted to hear what you guys have to say. Paired with a GTX 1060 6GB, is the Ryzen 3 2200G good enough for maybe a couple more years or it was never a good match and i should, if i can, commit to this upgrade?

Do i need to buy thermal paste?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 01:38 PM PDT

This is my first time ever building a pc, so i am very much so a noob.

So i am getting this cpu: AMD Ryzen 3 3200G 4-Core Unlocked Desktop Processor with Radeon Graphics https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07STGHZK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_j17zFb57P9RHW

To me it is unclear whether it comes with paste or if i need to buy some myself. If anyone could clear that up for me that'd be awesome. Thanks

I want to build my first PC, enlighten me

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 01:37 PM PDT

First, those are the components: CPU: i5 9400f. GPU: Zotac 1660 Super. MOBO: Gigabyte B365M D2V. RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2×8) 2400MHz. Storage: SSD WD Blue 3D NAND, 500GB (M.2). PSU: Corsair 650W. Case: some case from the internet with a 2 fans and a "open" front, for airflow.

Ok, so, I have never built a gaming PC before, I mostly want to watch a tutorial though, when doing it. Do you guys think the specs are okay for a budget build? Is ESD something I should fear for my life? What should I do and don't do? Any advices would be nice for me, thanks.
