Upgrading your case is dangerous for your wallet Posted: 28 Aug 2020 06:53 AM PDT Back in November, I decided to upgrade my case after three years. I went from the CORSAIR Carbide Spec-04 to the Meshify C. This meant that the case looked a million times sexier and it had a large tempered glass window to show off my internals. The case was $130. I decided why the hell not. I bought a vertical mounting bracket so I can show off my GTX 970. That costed $50 and I cut through the new case. Then my GPU wasn't looking too nice with the case. Since it was underperforming anyways I decided to upgrade to an EVGA GTX 1070. A $300 upgrade. Then I decided to fill in the two empty RAM slots for aesthetics. I run virtual machines and the Adobe Suite anyways so I guess it was justified. Another $80. But hey. My CPU and case fans were all different colors and weren't consistent. So I bought a set of 3 case fans (white to match the case). $30 again. This upgrade spree ended recently because now I'm broke. In addition to the things I bought above, I also got a new white alarm clock, a white Xbox One S controller, white PSU extensions, RGB LEDs, and a white Glorious Model D mouse to fit the theme that I'm running. Oh yeah and I got a new chair too. TLDR: What started as a $130 upgrade turned into a ~$1000 upgrade spree. I have no regrets. Edit: Before / After GPU Upgrade / Current Edit 2: prices are in CAD Edit 3: My Setup since a lot of people think my aesthetic purchases weren't justified. VERTICAL GPU MOUNT IS FROM PHANTEKS. (I cut into the case) Edit 4: A lot of people are criticizing me for spending too much on aesthetics or not buying the beefiest GPU. I like to think about it like cars: some people wouldn't mind having an ugly car if the performance was there. I like that balance between performance and aesthetics. If you have a lot of people ride your car (or in my case, come over to my place) wouldn't you also want something that's presentable? As of right now, I don't need any performance to game or work from home and my specs are perfect for what I do now. [link] [comments]

Why is it so hard to move on from a GPU after an upgrade? Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:50 AM PDT A couple of days ago I picked up a like-new Gigabyte 1660 super for € 180 off FB marketplace to replace my ageing Aorus RX 570 that I built my system with. Setting it up and making the switch to NVIDIA, it was night and day seeing the quality improvement in games like GTA, Warzone and Skyrim, ( Not so much for League). Most notably, the massive difference in noise that pleasantly surprised me. Gone were the sounds of vicious high-pitched fans, coil whine, and rattling, and in came the smooth hum of thermal efficiency; even in the hands of a Q300l. I'm quite sensitive to sound, so I avoided to games for a long time because I would get headaches and lose focus. Thankfully, they're now playable. However, it was quite a melancholic experience taking my card out for the last time. Despite the painful driver issues, fans replacements, mediocre temps, and god awful noise, I'm finding it really difficult to take it off of my desk and return it to its box. The countless hours spent gaming, tweaking, and its participation as a part in my first build have grown a connection with me and this card. I was even considering reselling the 1660 super as an excuse to use the 570 a tad bit longer and wait out the 3000 series to upgrade during Black Friday; which ironically I would've upgraded to this card most likely. Overall, life in theory has been better with the 1660 super, but it's a little bit sad not seeing the lit-up Aorus logo in my system and dealing with screeching fans. Eventually I'm going to have to sell my 570 to recoup the costs, but until then I'm going to have hard time moving on and in time, have to say goodbye to this absolute head-breaker of a card that I love and hate. This is my first substantial upgrade and I was wondering if this was an experience that other people went through, or whether I'm just getting too attached to a piece of hardware. Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:50 AM PDT I'm 16 and just finished my first PC build. Not too proud of the monstrocity of sphaghetti cables I've made and it definitely wasnt the wisest use of my budget, but at least I didn't break anything! (Although I certainly thought I broke the GPU at one point, that was scary!) My HDD hasn't been delivered yet, but I was eager to get my system up and running so installed Windows 10 to my SSD and I've been running it ever since. I made sure to enable XMP in the bios and now I'm all set. Im a bit overwhelmed with the many different graphics cards. Please help. Posted: 27 Aug 2020 03:21 PM PDT Hi guys, im currently looking to upgrade with a new CPU, GPU and get a bit more RAM. So i am currently trying to pick out a new GPU and im not ultra knowledgeable about building PCs or picking component but i decided to get a graphics card from the NVidia RTX 2080 line. Now i have checked several websites that offer PC components and i am a bit confused about how many graphics cards with seemingly the same name, the same (or similar) specs etc are on sale for wildly different prices (even on their official website). Now how do i actually find out the differences in order to choose which one i might want? Im trying to upgrade so i dont need to do so in the next few years and can play new releases on high (if not max) graphics settings. EDIT: Thanks so much for the many many comments! It helps me and probably quite a few other people a lot! I have kind of given up replying to every comment asking questions or giving information, but i read it all. I will wait for NVidias anouncements and then decide on what ill do beyond that as many of you suggested [link] [comments]

Why is the Ryzen 5 3600 increasing in price? Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:02 PM PDT Just a few months ago, the 3600 was at its all time low price on Amazon.com at $155.00. It has now risen to $200.00, the original launch price. Any ideas why this is happening? Finally pulled the finger out! Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:33 PM PDT Hi Folks I've tried posting this with pictures, but I can't figure it out! So link to picture here So I just recently decided that I was going to build a PC. It had been a bit of a dream for a while, where I was trying to justify even paying so much for it. Not too long ago u/tacticalBEA-RD created a post here, where he built his wee lad a PC. To make a long story short, he ended up giving away a spare 2060 KO, which by some luck managed to fall to myself. I went off and ordered all my parts (which took aaaaaages to arrive), booked today off work, and got this baby built in about 3 hours earlier this morning. An absolute breeze, and if you're anyway anxious about making your first build too, don't be. I watched a scatter of Linus Tech Tips videos and flew it, so do yourself a favour and go subscribe on YT! I'm currently downloading a couple games, and passing the time by making this wee post... u/mozyman don't be worried, I'm still planning to upgrade to a 30 series GPU before long. For anyone interested, specs below: 3700X Noctua NH-U12S (Also bought a white shroud to help it look tidy) X570 Aorus Ultra Mobo 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Memory 3600 500gb 860 Evo Plus 2tb 870 Evo Sata SSD Corsair 220t Airflow Corsair 850W PSU Fans on the case are SP120 RGBs, and I bought an extra LL120 RGB fan for the rear [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:16 PM PDT I am a first time PC builder. I hear a lot of people recommending only using an SSD for the core files of your PC (mainly to have a faster start up process) and then using a HDD for the rest of the files, but I also see a lot of builds which only use an SSD. I get that it's great to have a fast start up but what would be the upsides and downsides of using an SSD entirely? [link] [comments]

How do I know which wifi card to purchase? Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:34 PM PDT I've been checking out wifi cards and found stuff like this https://www.amazon.ca/WISE-TIGER-Adapter-600Mbps-Wireless/dp/B01M0Q51UI?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1 yet I have no clue if this or ANYTHING else is the appropriate one. After 5 months I finally present to you: THE WHITEBEARD Posted: 28 Aug 2020 09:13 AM PDT Ok, first off: 3 months of planning, videos, tips, parts. Little did I know that it was gonna take me 2 months from when I ordered the parts til the setup was done. 1st cabinet: Crooked and bent mount offs, had trouble mounting the MB. Had everything completed almost, took everything apart again for return. Broken usb-c cable. PSU: Mixed up the gpu-connector with a cpu-connector, return. Watercooler: Didn't work, all usb's disconnecting 24/7, and didn't registrer in nzxt cam. Had to order a USB-hub. Mouse: Too big, returned, 1 month til they got the smaller version. Anyways, I can finally rest in piece. 3 things I'm missing tho: Thinking about buying new speakers, so didn't rly cable manage the speaker-cables. 2nd is I'm waiting on a slick black&white xlr-cable from the US. 3rd: I'm gonna try to fix the white TP-cable hanging there.. 24-inch 1440p Monitors - Why so Rare? Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:43 PM PDT I really want a 24-inch monitor... 144hz+ Refresh Rate 1ms Response Time 2560x1440 Why is that so hard to find? Can I travel with PC components Will AIO cause issues Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:58 AM PDT So I'm disassembling my pc into parts, my GPU in its respective box, my motherboard and CPU into a box, and my corsair h100i v2 seperate. I will be travelling to the UK, I will be checking in the parts and not take them carry on. My questions are. 1- Will I get taxed for any of these items in the UK I have no receipt for any of these products I purchased, i'm a british national. 2- will the AIO be an issue with the airports, if so how can this be resolved? 3- do u think I should seperate the AIO from the motherbaord / CPU, if so, should I also remove the thermal paste and apply a new one when I arrive there, or should I just leave it on, and hope it will be the same when I arrive. 4- I have a hard case, and I will be using bubble wrap for the inner layers of the bag for protection, and make sure everything is super bubble wrapped and protected with some clothing that I will also take, will this be suffiecient, with them being also in their boxes and etc. 5- Are there any other concerns I should have or take into consideration? What’s with the new gpu everyone is talking about? Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:39 PM PDT I've been lurking this sub reddit for a while now, but I've come across something. Apparently there will be 3000 series gpu coming out soon. The problem is I'm about to buy a gpu, a 2080 super specifically. Should I wait for the new gpus that are coming out? And how much will they be? [link] [comments]
Finally figured out how to disable windows 10 DWM forced vsync Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:47 AM PDT Recently I've pretty obsessed about reducing input lag to the point I upgraded my setup, which now runs to run close to 1000 FPS on Fortnite and Valorant. While the FPS kept going up, what bothered me is the diminishing return on the reduction of input lag. I had sub 2ms frame times yet it felt only marginally better than 60hz gaming. Long story short I upgraded all my hardware and it came down to me having DDR3 2300Mhz RAM. I thought that might be bottle necking my setup so I upgraded to the Z390 Chipset with 16GB of Overclocked 4000Mhz Gskill Trident RAM. Once thing plagued me, I could always feel some sort of cap on input lag. The trick to fixing it was just pressing Alt + Enter quickly twice. The real culprit in all of this, is Windows 10's DWM (Desktop Window Manager). It's once nasty service that auto starts even when you try to kill it. Someone on reddit posted some sequence where you can get rid of it, but I tried doing it and it was a load of bs. DWM will force the monitor's refresh rate V-Sync but do it in such a sneaky way, that it's simply disgusting. It will force V-Sync on your application, but the FPS counter in either MSI Afterburner or the in-game one won't be affected. So you think you are getting all those frames and the frame time is low, but DWM is completely taking over V-Sync. To the point where it will ignore Registry values. I almost gave up, but then I remembered that when I first got my new monitor I decided to run a dual monitor setup with my Zowie, but I ended up getting terrible screen tearing in Kovaak's on my gaming monitor. Then it clicked, screen tearing means we're out of DWM's jail and Windows 10's god awful forced V-Sync is not working. I'm assuming Windows 10 can only force V-Sync for a single refresh rate. If you force it to your monitor's lower refresh rate (by making it your main monitor), then DWM will leave the higher refresh monitor alone, BUT only if the application is running in Exclusive Fullscreen mode AND it's being run with Admin privileges. I'm assuming if the application has Admin privileges it can override Windows 10's forced V-Sync as well. tl;dr use a dual monitor set up with varying refresh rates, plug in the lower refresh rate monitor into your motherboard, plug the higher refresh one into your GPU, set the lower hz monitor as your main, run application in full screen exclusive mode as admin on your gaming monitor, profit??? I have a basic list below which seems to work out compatibility wise... any ideas or advice. I am looking to do a bit of basic 4k video editting and maybe a little bit of gaming and although I havent got a tight budget I will probably build over a couple of months just to spread the cost over a couple of pay days. I am a little unsure on cooling.. the cpu comes with a cooler and the case has a couple of fans.. should I get some more? As I said I have not done this before so all advice is welcome.. Bought 144HZ, not sure if its working as it should. Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:48 PM PDT Hello. Bought this model, on sale: https://www.samsung.com/za/monitors/gaming-crg5/LC24RG50FQUXEN/ Model: Samsung LC24RG50FQUXEN Out of box, I didn't get DP, but whatever version of HDMI. In windows, Radeon and monitor settings I see that it is running in 144hz. Is that information correct?
