    Simple Questions - August 19, 2020

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 03:32 AM PDT

Honestly what was I thinking I'm having so much fun just opening things I've never booted windows faster this is an amazing day!! To think I could have improved my life this much years ago and chose not to pains me but I'm so happy I finally took the step up.

5700xt Vs. 2070 Super nightmare story

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:47 AM PDT

New to Reddit, figured i would make a post to help some when trying to decide what GPU to choose when building a pc, especially when deciding between a 5700xt and or a 2070s. i really wanted to give AMD's GPUS a chance....and let me tell you...it was nothing but a nightmare. For at least 3 months i had nothing but issues with the 5700xt. I tried giving it multiple chances, i thought my motherboard was the issue...replaced it. i thought my power supply was the issue....replaced it. Did not want to replace the GPU because for some odd reason my brain kept telling me that there is no way that was the issue. long story short lol....one day i said screw it, and ended up buying a 2070 super. feeling so defeated i figured there is no way that this is going to fix my problem but i might as well give it a shot. let me tell you it was night and day difference....felt like this weight was finally lifted off my shoulders. I could finally game in peace. So again for those who are wondering whether to choose between AMD or Nvidia.....save yourself from constant troubleshooting and go with Nvidia. This is coming from someone that doesnt choose sides as far as Team Green or Team Red...its all BS to me...i just want something that works. AMD is a great Company IMO, but they sure need to work on their GPU software. Again making this post just to try and help some people that are deciding between these 2 gpus.

    SOS CPU won't fit socket

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 03:42 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am building my first pc and I have some kind of big trouble: the cpu (10700k) won't fit the socket in the z490 aorus elite ac!!! Some kind of weird plastic parts are blocking it, is that...normal?

    https://imgur.com/a/TUnkKzL

EDIT: these picture https://imgur.com/a/2EaEpjA shows the 2 small weird plastic parts.

    Thanks.

Greetings everyone. I'm planning on building a pc with an RTX 2070 SUPER in the upcoming days, but after I heard that the upcoming RTX lineup will be released in a month or two, should I get the 2070S since it still performs really well or am I an idiot for not waiting for the new lineup? Reliability of PowerSpec Psu's

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 10:57 AM PDT

I went to Micro Center and built my pc almost 2 weeks ago w/ an R5 3600 and 2060 KO. A rep at the store was gathering parts and he grabbed a 650w PowerSpec psu because I didn't specify what brand I wanted. I know the wattage is enough, but I've never heard of PowerSpec before and I'm worried that my pc wont be reliable w/ this psu. I also have a white case and this psu which cost $90 has non-coated colored cables which is also super aggravating.

I'm wanting to know if this psu is safe to use for the long term, or if I should go out and buy something like a Seasonic Focus, Pure Power 11, Corsair RMx/CXm, or an EVGA unit.

Thanks in advance for any responses :3 <3 Stay safe!

    Upgrading existing PC

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 02:25 PM PDT

Hey guys, I built a PC about 4 years ago now, so the CPU is no longer keeping up during gaming. Current specs are Asus B150 Pro Gaming Aura RGB LGA1151 mobo, Intel i5-6500, 16Gb of DDR3 RAM, 2 250 Gb Samsung 850 EVO SSDs, and a Corsair CS650 M- 650 Watt PSU, and NIVIDA GeForce 1050Ti. I understand I am going to have to buy a new mobo because of a newer chip, but is that it will I need to upgrade anything else? I'm looking for a processor with at least 6 cores, so a high end i5 or a i7 and I'm willing to get not the latest gen processor, I'm having trouble picking one. I am trying to buy the processor and the motherboard for a total of $300, any suggestions? I'm in the US btw TIA.

Best monitor for my use case

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:56 AM PDT

    Hello all!

I'm looking to get a new 4k 120hz+ monitor for gaming.

I would like for the monitor to be larger than 30 inches, but smaller than 50 inches. I usually sit about 3~4 feet from monitor in a brightly lit room.

    Price range: Below 2,000 USD

GPU: I will likely be upgrading to the flagship or second tier nvidia Ampere card.

Which monitor would be best for my use case in your opinion? I'm looking to get the best overall image quality that fits within these requirements.

I bent my CPU pins. Please help!

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:49 AM PDT

So I just realized that my Ryzen 5 3600 cpu pins were bent. I don't exactly know what to do from here on. I'm not freaking out too much because I know that its fixable but I'm still pretty worried.

Do I need to unscrew the stock cooler, take the try to peak the cpu of the thermal paste, fix it, and then do everything over again or should I do something else

WD Blue vs WD Black Performance in Data Science and Gaming

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 01:14 PM PDT

I'm sure that this question has been asked on this forum before, however I could not find one that has been done recently.

I am building a PC in the coming months, for primarily data science and a little bit of gaming on the side (mostly AAA titles such as Halo MCC, Battlefield, etc.).

The component that is tripping me up the most is the ssd. I am stuck between the WD Blue 1Tb and the WD Black 1Tb. The black is geared for straight performance, as I have read, whereas the blue is more an all around reliable, budget part. I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to some resources that have proven statistics as to the differences between the two drives.

Do you think that the blue will be fast enough in both work and gaming? It is a fair amount cheaper, but would I be leaving a lot of performance on the table?

    Thanks in advance.

bad ram or dead motherboard/cpu ?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 01:03 PM PDT

    I5 6400, ASUS H110M-Plus, Seasonic S12II 500W (also tested with a thermaltake toughpower 750W), G.Skill Aegis DDR4 2400mhz c15 (F4-2400C15S-4GIS)

The motherboard just won't boot into the BIOS. No POST beeps at all. It just boots, restarts then stays on forever with no display output.

I've tried the gskill rgb ram from my main rig on it and it doesn't work either, the gskill aegis does work on my ryzen computer though. I've tried with 2 different power supply and nothing. It will just boot, restart itself on its own, then stay on with no display output whatsoever, I've tried with a gtx 760, gt 630 and onboard graphics.

When I turned on the motherboard without the ram in it, it would boot up AND NOT RESTART with no display output. With the ram, it would turn on, restart itself and stay on with no display output.

I can only think of 2 things but I really can't afford to try out more stuff before I'm on a limited budget. Is this a case of a dead motherboard or is the ram incompatible with the H110m-Plus? could the cpu also be dead? how could I test those components? I don't have others parts compatible with the h110m plus or i5 6400. On the website listing it says my ram isn't QVL certified for the asus h110m-plus and on intel's website it says the i5 6400 can only support DDR4 2133mhz. I bought the 2400mhz thinking it would just downclock itself to the lowest speed. Is my ram incompatible or is my mobo/cpu dead?

    Thanks.

    switch to dual 1080ti questions

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 12:57 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm adding on another 1080ti to my existing setup to hopefully get 6 screens running instead of 3 at 1920 x 1080. I don't use this system for gaming, just office work. 2 simple questions [for others, not me]:

    1. could I run 8 screens with my set up? The intent is 6 but as I'm having my stand ordered should probably follow through with the intended goal.
    2. what bridge do I need to do SLI for the spacing I have? I'm uncertain of the spacing if you can forgive my lack of terminology.

    my set up:

    (2) EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC Gaming Black Edition. each has (1) hdmi and (3) display ports

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC)

Need to upgrade my CPU and very lost.

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 12:39 PM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from the Intel i7-4790k to something, well better. I've got a GTX 1080. I play at 1080p at 144hz.

I'm very into playing VR games aswell as the bigger mutliplayer games like BFV and such. While the current CPU holds well in some games, it struggles with some newer stuff. The new Star Wars Squadrons is what has pushed me to want to upgrade since my current doesn't meet the recommended. I've been looking around all day for potential upgrades but i just don't understand it all very well.

I'm pretty sure i've got to get a new motherboard to, but i'm just not very knowledgeable in these things.

    Buget is around 200-400.

So any help would be wonderful. Thank you

Budget Gaming Monitor : 60Hz w/ Freesync or 75Hz without freesync?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 12:31 PM PDT

I'm trying to pick a 1080p IPS monitor with speakers for a computer build (see the computer specs below). My budget is around US$125 which will allow me to buy a 60Hz monitor with a displayport or I can spend $15 less and get a 75Hz monitor with HDMI only.

My 1650 Super will support freesync over displayport only, so I need the displayport to use the freesync.

    • 75Hz HDMI monitor is $109: ViewSonic VA2259-SMH
    • 60Hz DP monitor is $125 : ViewSonic VA2256-MHD

Is 60Hz with freesync better than 75Hz without?
