    Simple Questions - July 25, 2020

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I finally built my own gaming pc! I'm literally shaking!!!

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 05:19 AM PDT

Thank you for everyone who shared some tips here! I forgot to include in my parts
    -Ryzen 5 2600
    - Palit GTX 1660 Super Gaming OC
    -16 GB 3200MHZ Tforce RAM
    -Seasonic S12 500W PSU
    -B450M mortar MAX
    -WD 240GB M.2 SSD
    -THERMALTAKE H18

THANK YOU! I really enjoyed building my first gaming PC! I was really sweating when I first tried to boot it up outside of the case using a screwdriver and very happy when it showed life. Thank you, it may not be the best specs out there but I am very proud and contented of this one. All my hard work and overtime finally paid off! Thanks and stay safe everyone!

PS. I didn't eat the thermal paste, as someone suggested.
PPS. Only 1 exhaust for now and no HDD, funds ran out. :((

How much ram do you really need for gaming?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 01:44 AM PDT

I wanna get 8gb ram to make the build cheaper but friends have suggested I get 16gb ram and honestly I don't know if there is a difference at all.

Edit: processor is AMD ryzen 5 3600x and the graphics card is Gigabyte RTX 2060

New Laptop or PC from scratch? On a budget of $1500

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 06:53 AM PDT

I hope this isn't breaking the rules?

I have an old laptop which is literal trash compared to the technology out there today, it's $200 laptop I got from a pawn shop a couple years back for school. It got the job done that it needed but it's so bad I can't even stream online or browse the web.

I have enough money laying around for once that I can buy my self something nice, my birthday is coming in a couple months so I can think of it as an early birthday present.

Now back to the question, the max I'm willing to spend is $1500 and this is me really pushing it, I'd be happier with spending less. I'm not good with technology and after hours of endless google searches and reading laptop specs I'm still unsure of what I should get, so here I am asking you guys.

I'm looking for something I can use for streaming and gaming, I'm looking for something I can play my Xbox games with. What would be a better use for my money in the long term as well? Upgrading my PC or buying a new laptop so I have two laptops? Also if I collect enough parts after upgrading can I build two PC's?

This is what I like so far but have no idea if it's any good. Acer Aspire 7 15.6" and ASUS ROG Strix G15 15.6". Can I build a PC better than that within $1500. Canadian if helps at all.

P.S don't mind my rambling, I'm high and pulling an all nighter. If you've made it this far, thank you for reading :)

    My "first"build - Complete!

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 09:03 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I just finished my first real build. Well, I kinda built my old PC too, but I didn't really care much and just put everything together. But this time I didn't try to rush anything and just put everything together nicely. My old PC also didn't have a window so I actually had to think about cable management this time.

Anyways, I really really like how it turned out. I never thought I could build something like this by my own. Thanks to all the guys that answered my questions the last couple of days, you really helped me. :)

    And here is the PC!

    The parts I used:

MSI RTX 2070S Gaming X Trio

MSI Z150a Gaming Pro Carbon (kept my old one)

    i7-6700k (also kept this one)

    Kraken X63

    32GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM (kept these aswell)

    NZXT H510 Elite Case

I hope everyone is having a good time and staying safe.

I got some thermal paste on cpu pins

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 08:22 AM PDT

I cleaned it up best as possible with 70% alk and q-tips/toothpicks.
https://imgur.com/3FYQGcT on the right side you can see it's only on the plate, not between pins.
    Is this good enough?

EDIT: I can't tell you exactly what kind of paste it is because the board and cpu were put together as a service, i only know it is silver in color.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 12:41 PM PDT

I have no idea about anything related to building a PC but am interested in building one as an alternative to the PS5. MY budget in the title and would really appreciate any parts advice based on personal experience.

    I want to play

    COD

    LoL

    Valorant

    CsGO

Basically I'm not going to be playing the Witcher or GTA but I want to be able to play the average mainstream game

Thank you in Advance and I'm sorry if I broke any rules regarding this post, I didn't know

Also building advice and what not to do would be appreciated

AMD Builds: Why B450 instead of X570?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 07:19 AM PDT

I'm a PC building noob, so this is probably a dumb question but.... I keep seeing build recommendations for the Ryzen 3600 that include a B450 motherboard. Aren't the X570 boards superior in every way ( PCIe 4.0, Zen3 compatible ) and pretty close in price? I just picked up the ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) on sale for $169 and I'm not sure why anyone would buy a B450. What am I missing?

Edit: what's with the downvotes? Is this the wrong forum for this question?

Why are split keyboards, that look like this, not as popular? I feel like they would help immensely in terms of keeping your shoulders relaxed/level while typing.

Picture for reference, I was looking to buy one (preferably in Canada) but notice they are not nearly as popular, why not?

    Hello r/bpc,

I'm looking for someone with far more knowledge than I on today's market & technology to guide me on a decision.

First, I'll shed some light on my computing & homelab needs & current setup:

    1: Current Workstation

    • Gifting it to my kids - one of which is passionate about artwork / music (guitar, keyboard) -- ie: Adobe suite, Appleton, etc.
      • i7 4790k / 16gb ddr3 / z97a / gtx 970 (Should be more than enough for their needs)
    • Since building it, I've had wonky issues with it & powering the following:
      • Multi-monitors: 34" 1440p ultrawide + 1440p 27"
      • NVME pcie adaptor + Evo 970
      • GPU 970 GTX @ 8x
      • Scarlett 2i2 audio interface WITH pair of studio monitors & condenser microphone

    2: Goals For New Build:

    1. Overkill+ under $2,000
      • 3-4+ Year "future-proof" workstation.
      • Core components only (case, psu, gpu, cpu, mobo, ram, fast storage)
      • Overclocking - Medium, nothing crazy
    2. Work from home on Production Rate. All around speed & efficiency will yield a better income.
    3. Hobbiest | Many Uses

      • Woodworking - SketchUp / light CAD - Blueprint design
      • Photography: Graphic & Light Video Design
        • Adobe Suite - Heavy use & LARGE RAW collection (lots of RAM / quality GPU/Processor)
      • Homelabbing - light Hyper-V virtualization (local, outside main server)
      • Local Development Environments: GitHub, WordPress (PHP, LAMP), Docker, etc.
        • Light Database (possibly)
      • Light gaming
    4. Hardware / Concerns **

      1. PCIE lanes & Motherboard**
        • My main concern is a motherboard at the moment
        • Maximize storage throughput without causing issues w/ power to GPU, 10gbps LAN, & Peripherals
        • Ryzen's 24 Lane Limit
          • 4x - CPU / Chipset
          • 4x - PCIE 4.0 NVME's - Corsair MP600's (possibly in RAID0)
          • 4x? - 10GBPS NIC (PC -> switch -> NAS / Server)
          • 16x - NVidia 2060 Super

            - In THEORY, I should be able run GPU at PCIE 4.0 8x without any issues.

            • Has/does anyone do this successfully???
      2. Powering all my devices / peripherals
        • Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface WITH
          1. Monitors: 2x JBL LSR350's
          2. Microphone: Audio-Technica AT2020
        • Monitors
          1. 1x Ultrawide: 34" 1440p
          2. 1-2x Monitors: 27" 1440p

    3: Homelab

I also run a beefy home server for a variety of reasons so I figure it's worth mentioning. Maybe it'll help with getting quality advice.

    • Dell R730XD / 2x E5-2660 v3 2.6/3.3ghz / 128GB DDR4
    • VMWare v7... VM's:
      • NAS (Storage): UnRaid 24tb Array (Soon to be FreeNas)
      • Automated Backups
      • LAN: PiHole 3x (DNS) / UniFi / Syslog, etc.
      • Services: Headless VM's / web server / media server / download automation, etc.
      • Full desktop test environments - many Linux / Windows / etc.

4: What should I change about my build?

    1. What motherboard would best fit my needs?

    2. Is there anything else I should change about my build?

      • Will running a 2060 Super @ 8x PCIE 4.0 cause any issues w/ multiple monitors?
      • Will all of my peripherals & devices run without hiccups? 10gbps nic, 2x pcie 4.0 nvme, audio interface / studio monitors / condenser, etc?

    ORRRR...

    1. Do I wait for Ryzen 4 Series? Is it right around the corner?

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THROUGH THIS NOVEL OF A POST!!!

I have some questions about my cooling system being compatible with my motherboard and case.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I plan on getting the Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler. After reading some good/bad reviews I think it's a great choice. PCPartPicker says it's compatible, but also has some side notes.

I like this cooling system (the color is what i really like), but pc part picker is saying "T he Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard."

So, my biggest questions are: 1. Can anyone else tell if I will need a mounting adapter? and 2. With my RAM clearance is my fan still okay?

After a good amount of googling I'm having trouble finding an adapter.

Here is the build I have so far. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/seukmi/saved/#view=qXBgt6

    Thank you for your time!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I am running a dual monitor setup. My main monitor (24g2u) is connected through display port while the other (R240HY) is connected through HDMI. Whenever I play a graphic intensive game, the main monitor will briefly go black, then after around 3 seconds picture returns. While this is happening, the monitor using HDMI is still working, sounds can still be heard, and the main monitor light is on. This happens very randomly; I can be playing for an hour and not see it happen, but sometimes it can happen very often. GPU is at it's stock settings.

    Running driver 20.7.2

    Things I've tried:

    Updated drivers and mobo BIOS

    Disabled freesync

    Underclocked my card.

    Increased the power limit

    Reseated the GPU

    Bought a new Displayport cable

Ran one monitor setups with each monitor respectively. The issues with the main monitor still remain while the second monitor runs fine. Note also that the 24g2u will run with no issues while using HDMI.

Plugged the monitor into my brother's setup using a GTX 1650 Super. Ran Superposition benchmark with no issues.

Looking to build a gaming PC, in need of some advice

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT

    Hi!

I just discovered this subreddit yesterday and it is perfect for me, as me and my husband are looking to build a new PC. We both have custom rigs currently, however would like to put our money into a single new one and build from scratch. I would like some advice on parts.

He is pretty set on having Intel over Ryzen. I would like advice on each if possible. He also wants something with multiple HDMI ports as he would like to have 2/3 monitors hooked up at some point.

If possible, a Pcpartpicker list would be great to help visualize the cost and parts.

    Budget is around 2k.

EDIT: The monitor we were looking at getting is the Westinghouse WH32UX9019 32" if anyone has opinions on that while we are at it, I will take them

    Short little question

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 01:54 PM PDT

I recently built a $450 PC and am looking towards the future for upgrade potential. The main way I kept cost down was getting the Ryzen 3 3200g, and no dedicated gpu. I love the consistent 1080p60 I am getting in fps games with the Vega integrated graphics. However, I was wondering, what would be the lowest-level gpu, Nvidia and/or AMD, with which I could get better graphics performance? If I want to upgrade my cpu sometime in the future, I would have to have already upgraded my gpu.

P.s: Here is a link to a post of mine with a full spec sheet. If anyone with more experience would like to tell me what I should actually look into upgrading first, that would be appreciated :).
