This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    First PC build done

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 06:25 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I just finished my very first PC build. Thanks to some great tips from other posts in this community, I was able to pull it off!

I'd be lying if I said it was easy but I feel very accomplished and I can't wait to start upgrading / build other computers in the very near future.

I went with a mid-range build as this will be mostly used for trying to get as close to / over 144hz at 1080p.

    The PC: https://imgur.com/gallery/gC3k4ot

    Price: around 1400 euros

    My specs:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600

CPU COOLER: NZXT X63 KRAKEN AIO

    MoBo: B450 MSI TOMAHAWK MAX

GPU: MSI RTX 2060 Super gaming X

VERTICAL GPU BRACKET: CableMod Vertical PCI-e Bracket

Sleeved cables: Cablemod PRO ModMesh Cable Extension Kit (Black and Green)

Memory: Corsair 16 GB DDR4-3200 Vengeance

Storage: Kingston A2000, 500 GB SSD NvMe M.2

    Storage: Seagate barracuda 2TB

PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 9 600W 80+ Bronze

    Case: NZXT h510

Case Fans: NZXT Aer RGB 2 Single 120x120x26 case fan

Thanks everybody for the useful tips, finally got around to making an account and joining this community!

    stay safe!

Edit: realized I forgot to put the bracket back on the left side in the third picture lol.

I building my first pc today, wish me luck. I might need it.

So my brother wants a new pc. He is searching for a pre-built gaming pc for about 2000 €. He does not want to build one even though that would be better.

First gaming PC. What should I choose?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:50 PM PDT

Hello PC gods. First of all I'm here asking for some advice regarding my first gaming computer but I don't want you to build an entire PC for me.

Is important to start the post saying that I live in Argentina and I'm going to buy the PC here. So for those who aren't aware about argentinian economy, let's say that everything is more expensive, especially electronics (like 30-50% more pricey than in other countries). I will order the PC in one week; and I say order because I'm not going to build it from scratch (although I know it's the "best option"). The thing is I haven't decided how am I going to do it yet.

    Budget: around 100.000-120.000ARS (1000-1200USD).

    This are my 2 options:

    1. Buying it on MercadoLibre (our Amazon). In this option the PC is going to be a Prebuilt that cost 60.000ARS (600USD) + a RX 5600 XT of about 40.000ARS (400USD). I know some will laugh but this is the "cheap" option.

The prebuilt has an A320 motherboard of a random brand (Asus/MSI/Gigabyte), a Ryzen 5 3400G, 480GB SSD storage (I will expand it in the future), 16GB (2x8) RAM, probably a trash 500W PSU and a trash PC case too. The prebuilt doesn't come with a graphic card so I will have to buy the RX 5600 XT somewhere else and put it myself in the prebuilt.

    1. Buying it in a specialized web (compragamer): in this site I get to choose all the components.

My idea is to get a cheap B450 motherboard, a Ryzen 5 3600, a good RX 5600 XT (I can't say which one because I don't know what model is going to be in stock next week), 480GB SSD storage of a good brand, 16GB (2x8) RAM of a good brand too, a 80 PLUS PSU of at least 400W and a decent PC case. This option will cost about 20.000ARS (200USD) more than the other one, they will take like 2 months to send it to me and I also have to save some money to buy a decent monitor.

    Summary:

    1. This pc is totally focused on gaming. My goal is to run AAA games like Cyberpunk 2077 in ultra at least at 60 FPS (although I don't really know if that's achievable with this builds).

    2. I want to know if the "more quality" components (like the processor) are worth spending 200USD more and waiting such a long time.

    3. Is important to say that I'm going to stick with this PC for a loooong time before I can upgrade any of it's parts.

    4. Suggestions about components like SSDs, RAMs and monitors are very appreciated but keep in mind that in Argentina everything is more expensive than in the international market.

P.D: sorry for my bad english.

    Possibly reusing old PSU?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 06:59 AM PDT

My PC died a couple of nights ago, and if possible I would like to reuse the power supply for my new build, since it could save me a bit of money.

My old computer has a "Corsair 860 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply" (bought 2013/2014). Will this be sufficient in a build that will likely contain an RTX 2060 with an I5-9600k or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or do I need to replace the PSU aswell?

    Thankful for advice!

    First gaming PC build

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 11:20 AM PDT

Firstly apologies for another 'my first PC build' post, but I'm really proud of what I've accomplished so thought I'd share. Also I got some input from this subreddit regarding my parts selection so thought would share my thanks. Below are some shots of the finished article.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/X3GwXH5

    Specs

CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (with stock fan)

GPU - MSI Nvidia RTX 2060 Gaming Z

Mobo - MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

    Memory - Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB 3600

    Storage - Adata XPG SX8200 1TB M.2 SSD

    PSU - Corsair RM750x

    Case - Coolermaster Masterbox TD500

    Additional fan - Corsair LL120

Lighting - Corsair RGB strips with Lighting Node Pro

I've definitely caught the PC building bug, and am already looking to upgrade the CPU fan to a Corsair Hydro 100i and adding some custom white or blue cables from LinkUp.

Edit - Added spaces after parts for ease of reading.

Decided I wanted a new computer to game with the Kid, sold my old truck and made it happen.

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:33 PM PDT

I know it's overkill for what we play, but I had a rare opportunity, a collision of truck sale, income tax refunds, and a little extra fun money saved up from having not been able to go out and do stuff the last few months, so I did it.

Imgur Gallery with a few pics of the journey.

I was super nervous about this, not the parts or building in general, I've been building computers for friends and refurbishing and donating old machines (37 donated so far) for years. But this was going to be the first time I had ever tried a custom water loop.

So for those of you nervous about getting into water cooling. Here's my recommendations, start with a Kit like I did. I used the Thermaltake C360 DCC kit, but probably should have started with soft tubing. I figured the "kit" would have everything I needed, except the heat source to bend it, but I was wrong. You also need a way to cut it and a heat source. Luckily I had a PVC/PETG pipe cutter from building an RC car stand out of PVC pipe, that would do the job, and a Heat Gun which I used to help dry RC body paint jobs.

It took some patience to get it right, I really should have built a jig or maybe found a ruler or something to help get dimensions, but I did pretty good I think for just eye balling it and using the curved edge of my kitchen counters to get the bends.

And let me tell you about the Case. I love it. It's a Thermaltake Core P3 and while it took longer then most to get put together because of how modular it is, it pulled of the perfect look for what I wanted, and the vertical back plate has plenty of space for cables. It was by far the easiest case I have ever worked with. But of course it's not really a case and more like a back plate with cable storage.

Final Build is a 3900XT, Asus TUF X570, PCIe Gen 4 1TB m.2, EVGA 2080 Super, G.Skill Trident Z 64GB 3200 RAM, Thermaltake Core P3, and Thermaltake Pacific C360 DCC water cooling kit.

File Servers are OK too, right?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 04:10 AM PDT

For a while, I was thinking how nice it would be if I didn't have to worry about moving important files from computer to computer when upgrading, reinstalling, etc. After looking at some prebuilt NAS options, I decided to go ahead and make my own.

After settling on FreeNAS for an operating system, the hardware choices weren't that difficult - ECC RAM is recommended, and wanting multiple drives for redundancy resulted in the chosen motherboard (8 SATA slots).

16GB seems adequate, maybe even excessive, and the CPU, despite being inexpensive, is perfectly good for the job.

The case was a mistake though - the build quality isn't good, some screwholes are very slightly misaligned, making assembly unpleasant, there was a fixed standoff exactly in the wrong place, and the single removable standoff that came with the case was the wrong thread for the hole! To prevent scratching the motherboard traces, I glued a small piece of plastic to the "wrong" fixed standoff, but then decided to drill it out from the bottom of the case instead.

Installation of FreeNAS used a boot USB drive (not needed after install) and an internal USB drive to actually store the OS.

Sharing is using NFS over a home network - the system is mounted from my computer at boot, and so far, everything seems to to "just work".

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

On 7/14/20 I had updated Windows to the newest available update. Ever since then I've been plagued with consistent game crashes and BSOD with various codes. Two being (CRITICAL_PROCESS_FAILURE) and (Netwtw08.sys) The only games I have on this rig are Destiny 2, Valorant, & Battlefield 4. All have crashed after a certain amount of time, never consistent.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

-System Restore to before the Windows update

    -Reinstalled windows (twice)

    -Deleted/Reinstalled Destiny, Valorant, Battlefield

    -Deleted GeForce Experience

-Redownload drivers w/o installing GeForce Experience

-Ran two Windows Memory Diagnostic Tests (No problems detected)

    -Disabled XMP Profile

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    BSOD and BIO Picture: https://imgur.com/a/X8qyOZw

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I've had no issues with temps on any component, just random crashes. I have thought of updating the BIOs thinking maybe it was outdated but I have been unable to find the place to download. Even if you can't help an upvote would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

What's better? A single $1,500 machine or three $500 machines. I have three kids and want to setup three separate workstations for them.

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 11:11 AM PDT

My kids are 7, 6, and 4 years old and I'd like to setup three workstations for them. My budget is about $1,500 excluding peripherals and I have been thinking about doing something similar to LinusTechTips 1 PC, 7 Gamers video. His budget was significantly higher but that was also four years ago, so I'm thinking about getting a Ryzen 3900x, three 1660 supers, and around 32 gigs of RAM. Would it be better for me to try and do three workstations off of that one tower or should I opt for separate towers?

EDIT: Thanks for all the great feedback guys. It'll be overkill to spend that much money now and I should just go with used prebuilts.

    New Gaming Rig 2k (Help)

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:54 PM PDT

Good Afternoon, Ladies and gents of reddit.. well let's be honest 90%+ gents.

Nevertheless, I am looking at building a new PC for the first time. I am currently rocking a 4790k and 970 GPU and it has been amazing up until this year... but I do believe it is starting to show its age.

With all of that being said, I am now looking to build a new gaming rig for anywhere between 2000-2,500 US. I will not need peripherals. The focus of this build will be gaming. I do sometimes stream with my friends, and of course your typical music, video browsing. 4k gaming is a plus, but not sure if possible with my price point.

I am okay with getting a lower-end GPU at this time such as the 2060s, in preparations the 3000 series.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Swapping motherboard in prebuilt

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:20 PM PDT

My friend has a prebuilt HP Pavilion 690-0010 but bought a GTX 1070 along with a new 500w power supply and new case. I am helping him pick out a new motherboard as well now. I am thinking about getting this one.

My question regards whether or not there will be any compatibility issues or not. I have built two PCs before but I am not extremely PC savvy yet. I have checked and see that the MOBO I picked out has an AM4 socket and supports DDR4-2666 RAM which is what is in his HP Pavilion.

    Thanks for any help!

X570 Aorus Pro Wi-Fi reporting SYS_FAN4 speeds intermittently

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:12 PM PDT

I built a new PC this past weekend using an X570 Aorus Pro Wi-Fi mobo in a Fractal Meshify C (creative, I know). I stripped out the stock intake fan and replaced it with a pair of Corsair LL140s, which are plugged into a Lighting Node Pro and the SYS_FAN2 and SYS_FAN4 headers. I installed iCue briefly to look into RGB control, but ultimately decided I didn't need it and uninstalled it to avoid unnecessary CPU utilization.

This morning I noticed that my POST was taking a little longer than it did before (15 seconds, up from 10 seconds), so I hopped into the BIOS to make sure all my settings have stayed the same. Although my BIOS settings appear to be the same as they were before, I saw that my SYS_FAN4 fan RPMs (one of the LL140s) was reporting intermittently in BIOS. It would appear at 877-880 RPM, go "N/A" and appear as if disconnected for a random interval, and then come right back. Looking in the case, the fan never turns off, and in HWiNFO64, reporting is consistent, never showing a "0" drop, though it shows a much more constant speed than its sister fan on the reporting graph.

Is something malfunctioning/set up incorrectly in my mobo or BIOS, is my fan just screwy, or is that one fan just so consistent the reporting thinks it's turning off? Both plugs are firmly plugged into the mobo, so the PWM pins are in contact on both fans. My SYS_FAN1 exhaust fan is not PWM and reports consistently in BIOS as well.

The notes I'm given at the bottom don't seem like deal breakers given what I've read, but I wanted to get some more educated eyes on it in case I'm misunderstanding. Is this thing gonna run? Am I making any huge mistakes here?

Is this an ok fan setup?

    What I have currently: https://i.imgur.com/WA8tMp7.png

I've been wondering if there's ways to improve this.

I noticed that the top right fan's expelled air is significantly cooler than the one further along the back. Is it possible that that fan is actually harming flow by wasting cold air? Would removing/flipping it be a smart thing to do?

Ryzen 5 3600 Cooler stock thermal paste

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 03:03 PM PDT

So I just now realized that when I installed the stock cooler to my new 3600 the other day, that I never wiped off the thermal paste that comes pre applied to the cooler. I usually use alcohol to wipe off the pre applied stuff and then use my own thermal paste. I forgot to do it this time and applied my own thermal paste like usual.

I'm usually idling at 48c-55c which is kind of hot for my liking but I have read that it's normal for the 3600 to run hotter with the stock cooler. Should I take the cooler off and clean everything off and start over?

Suggestions for a cheap video card for old pc for Minecraft

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:53 PM PDT

My daughter has an old pc of mine and her Minecraft game on windows 10 says something about not supporting the video card with the next update in the fall. I'm not sure what the card is at the moment but the motherboard is a Gigabyte ga-965p-ds3 with 1 x PCI Express x16 slot. Minecraft website says minimum requirements for video card are: Discrete: Nvidia GeForce 400 Series or AMD Radeon HD 7000 series with OpenGL 4.4

I'm just looking to find a cheap card maybe on ebay to squeeze out a bit more from this pc. For now all she does is play minecraft and roblox on it which both seem to work fine.

Thank you for any suggestions you might have.
