    Simple Questions - July 10, 2020

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

A few observations from the past couple of days troubleshooting and supporting on this subreddit

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 06:50 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'm so happy to see a great community of builders on this subreddit that either are just getting into the hobby, or supporting those who are trying to breakthrough.

I just want to comment on a few trends I've seen and hope this helps people out.

    • PCPartPicker has an option to copy your whole build in a reddit friendly format, please click the snoo (little reddit alien guy) icon on your list, and paste it in. I know asking us to click on your link to your build may seem like not asking a lot, but doing it for a few dozen builds can cause people to just not look at your list at all.

    • Your Ryzen 3600, 16Gb, B450/x570 and RTX 2060/5700 XT build is the most common combo right now. This system is proven to work, will handle all games out right now and is a great pairing. You'll be fine, order those parts and you'll be a-ok!

    • There's no such thing as a "bad time to buy" when you're ready to build. PC parts are always in flux and you're competing against a very slow clock that will eventually run out when the new generation arrives. But if you're always waiting for that next generation, you'll never upgrade as there's already a new one on the horizon (We're getting new Ryzen chips in December, but news about the next chips is already coming out for instance). When you're ready to build, that's the time to buy.

    • Don't doubt yourself just because your age etc. I see a lot of young builders on here who are worried/concerned about their first build and seem to correlate it with "I'm just 15 years old etc" I was 15 when I built my first computer, and I did it long before the days of youtube etc. There are so many more resources available today that any problem you may run into, is probably well documented on a forum and in a video. You can do this, read your manuals, watch a few tutorials and get to building! And DON'T get inside your head too much, if this hobby was so difficult it wouldn't be as popular as it is now.

    • When it comes to us supporting you, please provide us as many details as possible! Saying "I need a budget computer" could mean a lot to different people. One persons budget computer is $400 and anothers is $1200! Let us know the parts your using that aren't working, the board that your ram isn't working, and the ram too! The more we know, the faster we can help you!

IDK why I have found it relaxing to help people on this sub when my actual job is 40 hours of tech support to begin with, but I just like helping you all out and hope that some of these pointers/tips will improve your building experience.

Installed a new graphics card, now Greens and Yellows are way too bright

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 12:44 PM PDT

My PC was damaged so I replaced the motherboard and graphics card. I'm now running Windows 10 on an Asus X570 with a Ryzen 5 3600 and an RX 580. Everything is working great, except the colors seem a little bit out of whack. In particular, greens and yellows seem way oversaturated. Yellows look like yellow highlighter; I almost can't see windows Folder icons or the yellow O in Google. Meanwhile greens, like the Spotify or Kaspersky icons, look like Neon Green. It's not so bad that I can't live with it, but it's pervasive and irritating. I've tried tweaking the Windows color settings to no avail. I've definitely eliminated the monitor and it's the same HDMI cable I was using before. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: My issue was the Pixel Format setting on the new card, I was on YCbCr rather than RGB. Switching to RGB set me straight. Thanks Reddit!

I will be building my first ever pc in the upcoming months and I can't wait as I've been gaming on console for years now and have finally saved up enough to make the switch!! I will mainly be gaming, video editing, schoolwork and possibly streaming and now I just have to wait until I can build it. Just want to say a massive thanks to everyone who has helped me make these decisions and just to let everyone know that I know that the case fans are ARGB so I will be buying a fan splitter so it will be compatible with my motherboard! Just a final thanks and keep safe everyone!!❤️

Are the RX 5700XT drivers stable now?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:46 AM PDT

I'm planning on getting a sapphire rx 5700xt pulse soon, just wondering if earlier issues have been fixed and if they are now running fine? Or should I go for an RTX 2060 instead?

Edit : So there has been a lot of mixed answears about this, and I also found out I can get a RTX 2070 Windforce x2 for pretty much the same price, are they equal in performance?

Graphics card died, now I'm a little lost.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 10:33 AM PDT

GPU finally crapped out on me last night after years of clicking and grinding noises. Just a matter of time. I'm in the market now for something to replace it obviously, but I could really use some advice, guidance, and suggestions.

I had a lot of help building my PC last time but sadly the person I tend to go for help is no longer around, so here I am.

    Specs:

    OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

    Processor: Intel i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz

    Motherboard: ASRock Z77Extreme4

    Ram: Corsair 8GB

    Power: Corsair GS600

I've looked up a few possible GPUs already, but I'd love to get other opinions. A few that I'm currently considering:

    Radeon RX 5600 XT

    GeForce GTX 1660 Super/OC 6G

GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XLR8 Gaming OC

Those are all mostly based on price versus apparent efficiency of the card. I haven't had a job in forever, it feels like, so a cheap but good card is really what I'm after. I tend to really only play Final Fantasy 14 on the computer, so I don't need anything that runs 4k or VR.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, or suggestions on which websites to look at for pricing and what card I should lean towards.

It all looks clean from my desk but once you look behind the desk, it's all a mess. I'm hoping to get some shelves to block the outer edge of the desk eventually but as of right now, you can see these cables from a mile away. How should I best manage these cables?

    Is this a solid 3900X + 2090S build?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 10:24 AM PDT

Building a rig for 1440p/144hz gaming, music production (I already have an audio interface), and software development. Any issues with this? It's is on the upper end of my budget, so are there any obvious ways I can save money here without sacrificing too much performance? I'm gonna be holding out for a few months in the hope that nvidia announces their next gen series so we can get some price drops on the current gen.

weird flash on GPU when turning the PC off

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:40 PM PDT

I'm not sure if it's the correct subreddit, but today I finally put together my first ever PC and oh, how excited I was when everything worked flawlessly - or so I thought. I set up everything and played for several hours without any problems, but when I turned off my PC, I noticed a weird flash on the GPU, just above the cables connecting it to the PSU. It "goes off" the last, once all the RGB in the case is off and it also makes a weird "ting" sound.

Is it something really wrong with my GPU (gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER windforce 3x) or is it completely normal?

Having issues with my new build for my brother. Hdd/ssd not showing in BIOS.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:36 PM PDT

This morning we put everything together, got into bios for first time just fine. There I saw both my WDHDD and PNY SSD listed one the boot priority list. Confirming that they were showing in BIOS, I then used the EZFlash tool to update my BIOS. Then, I used a flash drive and installed Windows 10 Pro to the SSD.

After a short install I went back into bios to set the boot priority to the SSD. However just getting into the BIOS is giving me issues. I reach a ROG "press f2 or DEL to enter UEFI BIOS Utility" screen. When I press f2 it takes very long to bring up the BIOS. When it does, I get a black screen after about 5 seconds. After powering off and resetting multiple times, I finally manage to get in without the screen going dark. Now it shows nothing connected via SATA as far as boot drives.

    Specs:

    AMD Ryzen 5 3400G Processor

    ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard

    16(2x8)gb T-Force 3200DDR4 RAM

MSI Armor Radeon RX570 8gb graphics card

    NZXT h510 case

    WD Blue 2tb 5400RPM HDD

    PNY cs900 240gb 2,5" SATA SSD

Currently walking away from it to clear my headache. Any ideas suggestions?

    His first build!

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 10:33 PM PDT

Sharing a milestone from our little corner of the world. Many posts here have helped us out and I wanted to share what this sub helped create.

Our 12 year old son has been trying to figure out how to build a budget gaming rig for the past few months (been on a laptop for awhile.) He did the research on different hardware, best bang for the buck, and putting a build sheet together for a pc that would grow with him for a bit. We had an old server laying around from my last build over 15 years ago (Celeron baby!) and we decided to donate the case and power supply to the cause. Some chores and a little b-day money and he was off.

After patiently waiting for the board to ship, I'm happy to announce that he's just powered up his first build with zero issues!

Super proud, and can't wait to get my ass handed to me

    B550 motherboard with 3600XT or Z570 motherboard with 3600?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:05 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

First of all, I don't plan to upgrade the CPU in the future. When I do, I will change the motherboard too, so I don't care about the upgrade factor. I'm still rocking a i5-4570 right now.

I have two choices that would end up costing the same:

    • Ryzen 5 3600XT + ASUS Prime B550M-A

    • Ryzen 5 3600 + ASUS AM4 TUF GAMING X570-Plus

Note: I don't have an NVME drive (regarding PCI-E lanes). I use regular SATA SSDs (Evo 850 and WD Blue)

    I game in 1440p with a R9 580 8gb if it matters.

    Thanks!

Good time to be building a PC? Prebuilt?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 12:59 PM PDT

Hello all, I sold my PC about a year ago to focus on school. I graduated this year so I feel like rewarding myself with a new build. I sold my rtx 2080 with a r7 2700x for $1600. Looking at the prices now, its pretty bad. I don't think I could replicate the build, especially since I had 2 1440p 144hz monitors, k70 lux rgb, and g502, hyperx cloud 2. Now knowing that I would really like to complete a build before the end of this month. I am getting my top wisdom teeth out early august and would like to game during that whole week. So is a prebuilt really the only way to go if I want decent part prices now?

I am not too informed with the new rx 5700 xt cards and newer r7 3000 cpus. How are the rx 5700, comparable to a relevant nvidia cards? Is this prebuilt https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-supreme-gaming-desktop-amd-ryzen-7-3700x-16gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt-1tb-ssd/6400453.p?intl=nosplash&skuId=6400453my best bet? Is it just a bad time to build and I should just wait till after covid?

I have 2 60hz 1080p monitors and a shitty mechanical keyboard and mouse left over. So I only need a PC. I am not dead set on the timeline, just a preference.

Built it! Problems and solutions report.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 09:24 AM PDT

Today I've finally finished my build!

Several years ago I had some experience with replacing some PC parts (HDDs or RAM), but have never designed and built from scratch. So this is my first experience and at the moment I'm really glad and proud with the result.

In the process I've face some issues (some were stupid and some were real), but solved almost all of them. Thanks to this community as well! I've found here some useful hints.

In this post I wanted to list all issues I've met and my solutions. In the build process I realized how poor is provided official documentation and how unique could be the situation. So, I hope this post can save some time and nerves to a future reader and PC builder.

    My configuration:

    • Case: Be Quiet! Silent Base 500 White (with window)
    • PSU: Be Quiet! Straight Power 650W (Gold)
    • Motherboard: ASUS Prime x570-Pro White
    • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X
    • CPU: AIO Water Cooling NZXT Kraken x73
    • RAM: Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600 CL16, 8x4Gb RGB (32Gb in total)
    • Storage: M2 Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB
    • GPU: Gigabyte nVidia RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 8Gb White

As you see, my goal was to build a gaming PC in white theme. Second requirement: my wife does some 3D animation and works with graphics (Adobe stack), so she could use the PC too.

This is how it looks like now: https://imgur.com/a/KldkKm4

Problems I faced in order of happening.

During Kraken connection I realized that it doesn't have any built-in solution to manage its own fans. The radiator has 3 fans and the instructions said I need an extra fan controller (sold separately) or I can just connect all fans directly to the motherboard. Since I didn't know that I connected all of them to the motherboard and order the controller from Amazon (it came the day after and gave me another small issue). The motherboard has 5 fans port in total and I took them all (3 for Kraken + 2 case fans). The water pump connector goes to AIO motherboard port.

On the first run I've got all LEDs shining, all fans spinning, but no any beeps and black monitor (HDMI cable to graphic card).

The situation/solution. After some research I've studied that my motherboard has several tiny LEDs for some basic diagnostic. There're:

    • BOOT (green)
    • VGA (white)
    • CPU (red)
    • DRAM (yellow)
    • another CPU - power (red, in the top left corner of the mobo)

In my case there was red CPU power LED. The problem was - I didn't plug extra CPU power cable from PSU - I connected only 24-pin motherboard power cord. After I added second power cord - I've moved to the next problem...

Now I passed red CPU led, but got the same black monitor with VGA white LED shining. Wherein GPU fans and LEDs were working. First thought was there some shit with my new graphic card. I tried to connect HDMI to motherboard video out... same result. Later I read that this motherboard has no integrated GPU and my CPU (Ryzen 5 has no GPU either), so no any sense to connect your monitor directly to the motherboard.

Solution: after some ineffective actions I've noticed that my PC case + graphic card back plate + my HDMI cable all together have such forms and sizes that HDMI cable physically can not be fully plugged to HDMI port on graphic card. Around 1,5 mm of space is wasted between GPU backplate and HDMI cable plastic handle. To make it possible I just took a knife and cut a piece of plastic to let the cable go deeper (better to see the picture of the "fixed" cable: https://imgur.com/gallery/w6P0ERi). That helped and I moved to the next problem...

After successful Windows installation I decided to customize all RGB stuff. Downloaded all apps (one for motherboard, another for RAM, one more for Kraken, and one for graphic card). The problem was with RAM's rgb, it has it's own app - MOD, it supposed to customize DDR modules in all possible ways, but in fact it's really unstable and couldn't make all modules shine in sync all together. Official Ballistix website (https://www.crucial.com/support/articles-faq-memory/three-ways-to-solve-ballistix-mod-utility-issues) offers 3 solutions:

    1. Reinstall the app (didn't help)
    2. Update motherboard drivers (didn't help)
    3. Update motherboard BIOS (here the problem came...)

I went to the BIOS, found the "Updated" menu and started BIOS update process. The motherboard by itself found proper files in internet, downloaded them and updated it's BIOS. And my PC turned into a dead brick after that. No beeps, black monitor, all fans and RGB working. On diagnostics LEDs - BOOT (green) is on. I can't even see the BIOS.

I've read a bit and in general that means a problem with storage, or power, or some other hardware problem. But the situation is that a minute ago my PC was up and running with OS installed and I didn't even touch the hardware, so no reason to look for hardware issues.

I've read some more and found out that unlucky BIOS update easily can kill everything and it's not even a warranty case if I want to replace my motherboard. And I've found in my motherboard docs: "If there's no problem using the current version of BIOS, DO NOT manually update the BIOS. Inappropriate BIOS updating may result to system's failure to boot." Actually I was a bit shocked with this info and don't understand why Ballistix suggest to do that to solve issues with their DDR modules rgb.

The situation/solution. Actually, I did nothing, but in the morning I switch it on one more time and BIOS loaded. But now it can not boot from my drive (with windows installed). After some ineffective actions I just decided to load from my Windows USB to check the partitions. Found out that boot partition is not bootable anymore. So I just deleted all partitions, created a new one and installed Windows again. After that everything started working with updated BIOS. **RAM's RGB wasn't fixed though!**So, I can give the only advice here - Please, don't update you BIOS if you don't have a really strong reason for this! You're risking with your whole motherboard here, if you don't have expert knowledge with hardware repairing.

The next day my new NZXT fan controller was delivered, so I took all Kraken fans connectors and attach them to the controller. Here I removed one of the fans from motherboards CPU_FAN port and again got boot failing, this time with CPU (red) LED. I was more or less aware of the situation and was not really scared. Interesting part here, that Kraken docs said that I can connect it's cable to CPU_FAN or (!) AIO_PUMP. I have it connected to AIO_PUMP, because it seems logic to connect water pump to AIO_PUMP port. But in fact this cable does nothing just relaxing the motherboard telling it that cooling system is there and no need to worry about it. But the motherboard doesn't agree and refuses to boot the system.

So the solution was just to connect Kraken pump cable to CPU_FAN motherboard port. As an option I could connect there any of case's fans, but I didn't want mess fans names/types in any fans management UI (in BIOS or some Windows app).

On a positive side - now I have the Kraken pump, RGB and radiator fans (each fan separately, if needed) all controlled from NZXT CAM app.

Finally, all problems were solved and now the PC is running.

The last issue (I didn't solve it and, probably won't try anymore) - I can not synchronize RAM RGBs with Asus AURA sync. By some strange reason, 3 DDR modules out of 4 - can be synchronized, but only one (2nd to the right) - can not. It has RGB profile from Ballistix app and can not be managed by Asus AURA. And even with Ballistix app I can not synchronize all 4 modules. The only mode where all modules looks synchronized is "Static", when all of them has the same color and no any kind of dynamic effects. If anyone has a solution here, please, welcome!

If you have any questions or you need some advice about these hardware parts - feel free to ask!

I've looked through them and they seem all compatible? Are they?

Is anything on this list overkill? Are there cheaper alternatives which are equally enough for music production? (I wanna keep that ssd on the list though!)

Did I forget any part (apart from gpu)?

Can someone help me find pieces for a mid-range PC?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 11:43 AM PDT

So I am thinking about building a PC this upcoming month, but seem to be struggling finding pieces that don't go over my price limit but do what I want them to do. My price limit is around $830, I really don't want to spend more, and my goal for the PC is to be able to record Minecraft at 1080p and 60fps, and to be able to stream aswell. I have found a few pieces that I think would work, the GPU (XFX RX 580,) the case (Fractal Design Focus G,) and the CPU (Ryzen 5 3600,) but I really don't know what else to add while staying in my budget. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I watched a video on how to install this specific cooler on an AM4 mobo, and I have completed all the instructions, but the fans wont turn on? My pump is connected sata psu and the fans are connected to CPU_FAN1. The RGB is connected to JRGB1 because i couldnt find the exact assortment of 12v g r b on this motherboard like it showed in the video. Does anyone know what the issue(s) could be?

    First Pc Build

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:29 PM PDT

I built my pc and it works great but I'm already thinking about getting more storage and the nvme m.2 I have rn doesn't have a heat sync and I didn't realize that my mobo had another nvme slot with a heat sink so if I moved my m.2 to the slot with an ssd will anything happen to the data on it? Thanks!

Consecutive power outage made my SSD unrecognizable? (wont boot)

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 01:29 PM PDT

Hello everyone! This is my first post and I have sort of a problem with my SSD.

My SSD is an ADATA SU650, it has 120gbs of storage and i've been using it for about two years.

Yesterday July 9th a power outage occured while I was working on some 3d animation in Blender. As soon as the power was restored I turned on my pc but there was a text on the screen that stated:

"Reboot and Select proper boot device, or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key".

It was strange to me because it has never ever happened. So I went into the BIOS and boot it up manually, however there was another power outage today 10th of july, and it couldnt go further from the screen that tells you which keys to press to enter the BIOS. Ive tried restarting the pc and connecting and disconnecting the power and sata cables but still, it wont get past the motherboard screen.

After that happened I went to my pc maintenance local store and they did some tests on the SSD. According to them, the SSD was dead and nothing could be done about it. However, the SSD is still recognized by the BIOS, but I cant get it boot. I have tried plugging it into another pc and the BIOS still detect the disk, but Diskpart (CMD command) and MiniTool Partition wont detect it.

Can someone please tell me if this SSD can be used again, or is it completely damaged?

    Thanks beforehand!
