What kind of desktop speaker to buy?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:03 AM PDT

    Hey!

I hope you can help with my problem. So I would like to buy a new PC speaker mainly for gaming and a little bit of movies. It would be in a larger room and about 1-2 meters away from me. I don't really have any experience with quality speakers, but these 3 looks good to me, maybe I am wrong. Or if you could suggest anything.

Which one would you choose? Anyone have any experience with these 3?

    3. https://www.logitechg.com/en-us/products/gaming-audio/g560-rgb-gaming-speakers.980-001300.html

    4. Thank you!

    Customizing a New Gaming PC

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:17 AM PDT

    Hello everyone;

I'm considering shelling out some bucks for a new rig. RGBs, water-cooling reservoir, all that stuff. But I keep running into a few things aesthetically that seem especially difficult to find reliable sources or information for. I have an average or slightly above average level of understanding of computers when it comes to selecting parts - this will be my 3rd gaming PC / 2nd build.

My current computer was bought three years ago from Best Buy in a rush to return to PC before a game's release. It's held up so far, but I'm planning to re-sell it for a fair price to absorb some of the cost of the new rig. I can play everything current on maximum settings, no real problem (runs a bit warm even after cleaning but I'm always cold anyway).

This 3rd one though, I really want to go all-out in customizing, and hope to have completed before the release of Cyberpunk 2077. Here are some of my questions:

    • I'm sure "money" isn't the beast measure of performance, so what graphics card would I need to get the absolute most out of Cyberpunk 2077 without excessive spending?
      • It seems with most custom rigs it's pretty consistent that a graphics card is almost half the complete rig cost (barring premium peripherals), but I don't want to 'waste' money on a ridiculously over-the-top card meant for things I'll never realistically do, like render the next Pixar title or mining cryptocurrency.
      • The game supposedly takes advantage of Ray-Tracing, which I feel like I don't fully understand beyond "more advanced lighting effects." Is it possible to accidentally purchase a "ray tracing / RTX" card that can't play or doesn't get the most out of Cyberpunk 2077?
    • I do want to play in 4k, so I'm also interested in suggestions for the best gaming monitor(s) for this. While I really enjoy triple monitors, I've also been looking into ultra-wides with customize-able input layouts. It seems like a huge potential for buyer's remorse with an Ultrawide, but a waste of outlets / power to be using triples.

Update 1: So I did a bit more research and realized: I definitely did not understand 4k. Like at all. Chucking roughly $1,000 at a monitor and EACH 2080, I would already reach or exceed my 'hard ceiling'. While willing to dump $5,000 the only benefit would be that the rest of my rig might only cost another $1,000-ish - So let's say FOR NOW 4k isn't a requirement. I'll definitely be waiting until about a week (or two) before release to finalize on a GPU, to see if 2x2080 or the 3000 series are more comfortable / proficient. But I will do what I can to make it happen.

    • Are curved monitors just gimmicky in gaming unless ultrawide? (And what games even support it?) or would triple-monitors be better for cockpits & dashboards?

Update 2: I've decided to go with triple-monitors (one ultrawide) per /u/mcchickenmcnugg's suggestion. After some digging the Super Ultrawides are way too costly and I feel in the end I'd have less issues and more versatility with a 3-monitor config, which also allows me to upgrade each at my own pace.

    • I intend to stream at 1080p which my current GeForce 1080 can probably manage, but it's three years old and currently goin for $350~$400. Would doubling on my current card be less effective than just buying a second one?
    • Can I play in 4k while streaming 1080 without stream quality issues? I currently have an external Elgato HD60s and was considering the internal card, but I'm not particularly fond of their software. Any better recommendations? (might be fore a different sub to answer this, idk)
    • I appreciate the aesthetic of water-cooling units, but hard or fixed tubing seems almost exclusive to wholly customized builds (making their own tubing) and I haven't been able to find a kit under $500 that isn't floppy hoses. I'm not sure how to address this.

Update 3: This is entirely for aesthetics. The reason I'm set on water-cooling is that I enjoy the silence immensely. If fans too many fans are running too high I always become very distracted by them. Any clear soft-tubing tricks to make them more angular than loopy without compromising them?

    • What would be the best type(s) of paints to apply to components? And would I be using different types of paint for different parts? In case colors matter due to brand or materials or something, I'll be looking for a lot of bright/neon yellow and black as primaries with perhaps some some neon red and minimal teal / sky blue accents to match the typical Cyberpunk 2077 theme (at least right now - I might be looking at other colors depending on later inspiration once finally getting around to it). Also creating custom stencils which I can imagine being done by hand with borrowed tools.

My hard ceiling would have to be $5,000 if I'm feeling reckless. The last time I filled an online cart with parts I found myself becoming more discerning as I passed $2,500 - if only because I don't feel like putting in overtime at a job I dislike to make it more comfortable, but accepting that I might end up closer to $3,500 before fancy peripherals. I'm a strong believe in "you get what you pay for" but there are also some things I know I can do myself and am willing to try, try again. Like engraving my own glowy plate or setting up a logo animation on a Raspberry Pi LCD.

That's all I can think of for the moment. There was some custom site I visited a while back that had a whole lot of options I'd never heard of and didn't understand with an even more ridiculous price-tag. Would just be nice to know wtf they're talking about and whether or not they actually make any perceptible difference for gaming, but I can't find it. Probably for the best.

I'm also interested in other visual modification not as specific to components themselves (though again I sincerely appreciate the info and recommendations). Thanks for any help!

    ---

Edited for updates: I'd like to thank everyone for their input so far!

Does 120hz and 144hz have a noticeable difference?

First Build I've ever done 100% on my own!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:35 AM PDT

I built a computer with my Uncle back about 20 years ago (Windows XP just came out) and have been using laptops ever since then. I finally said "let's do this" and started putting my list together, saving up the $$, and re-tooling my budget about 100x.

I present to you all, for your judgment and enjoyment, my first ever gaming build. It's a dual-boot with Windows on the SSD and Ubuntu 20.04 on one of the HDDs. I am a voice actor and use it for both gaming and sound editing/mixing.

    Help with build

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:08 PM PDT

Hi, I'm building a PC for the first time and would like to get your thoughts on it. Aiming for a budget around $1300 CAD, is there anything I can upgrade or downgrade in the parts I've picked out? I'm willing to change it to an Intel build if it makes optimizing easier.

Build will be used for games like LOL, Apex, Overwatch and R6 mostly, along with coding and general media consumption.

I'm not very sure on the motherboard and power supply the most. I prefer to also order parts from either Canada Computers or Amazon.

Is a HDD fast enough for games if windows is installed on an SSD?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:24 PM PDT

It got me thinking, without windows doing all its reading/writing/computing whatever on the HDD, would it make the hard drive better? I ask as I have a 256GB SSD, with windows and my usual software installed, along with a few games, but I want to download a lot more and need about 2TB storage, and going the HDD route would obviously be much cheaper.

Upgrading GPU - Will the 2070 super fit with my current build

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:18 PM PDT

Hey, so my current computer i built is now 4 years old and thus some of the components are out of date when asked to perform some current loads e.g. COD Warzone & other games its beginning to struggle. The main of which is my GPU, which is an Nvidia 970 card.

Looking to upgrade and my budget is around £500, so therefore have been looking at the 2070 Super GPU.

Just wondering if someone can let me know if they think the card would be bottle necked at all by my other components?

Breakdown of my PC here; https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/30064160

    1080ti screws?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:58 PM PDT

So I watercooled my 1080ti. However I'm planning to go back to stock. The maintenance just wasnt it worth it to me and I can probably recoup some of the money I spent by selling my waterblock and pump.

However I cant find the screws that came with it. The exact graphics card is an Asus ROG Strix 1080ti. I'm looking for the 6 screws that screw directly into the back plate. Anyone know the exact specifications of those screws?

    Thank you!

Everything Opening Twice: I recently bought additional RAM and for the past two days any programs or web links I've been opening have been opening twice. Could this be a RAM or Mouse issue?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:46 PM PDT

When I click on the Excel shortcut it opens two windows (usually only opens one). When I click on a bookmark on my browser it opens twice. Adobe Acrobat randomly closes itself with no error code or anything. Some other programs are completely unaffected.

I'm wondering if this is due to adding new RAM or a mouse issue. How can I test it?

    My first possible build

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:02 AM PDT

I always wanted to build a PC and a found the PCPartPicker website very helpful and helped me start a small fire in my heart that pushes me to build a PC. My main concern with this build is if it overkill or simply incompatible. Feedback and tips are very much welcomed.

New PC build. Crashes at least once a day

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 10:44 AM PDT

    Hello,

New to the PC world (1 month now, previously a Mac user). I've made a few posts about buying/building my first PC, but now that it's build I seem to be having problems.

When I play games it seems to crash at least one time per gaming session. More recently (last night lol) it crashed like 5 times... today it wouldn't play Valorant more than 5 minutes without crashing hence why I'm writing this now. I come from PS4 where I've never had a problem and I know you can't compare (easier to optimize etc) but this is a little ridiculous and something is definitely wrong.

    My specs are Ryzen 5 3600, RX 5700XT Sapphire Pulse, Steel Legend B450M, Corsair TX650M, 16GB 3200 Gskill RAM, Crucial P1 M.2.

The only thing I've played with in the settings is the XMP profile for the RAM to make it 3200. I tried overclocking and undervolting once but it just crashed my game (Rocket League) basically right away so I put it back to default.

The only thing I've noticed which seems wrong is my CPU fan is louder than I think it should be, it runs at like 1650RPM on idle, then ramps up to 2200 or whatever when gaming or watching videos. It runs hot at like 55-60C on idle and then 75-90C when gaming. I'm going to buy a CPU cooler (thinking the Arctic freezer 34 esports duo) and I have new thermal paste to make this better.

I have tried updating drivers mainly for the GPU as I have to assume this is likely the problem (but maybe it's the CPU somehow?) but that doesn't seem to change anything.

Q: Where do I go from here? How do I make my system more stable? Especially considering it's basically stock...

Thanks for the advice in advance! (and sorry for the ramble short story...getting frustrated at this point)

TLDR: 1 month old PC, CPU runs hot, updated drivers (mostly GPU ones) and it still crashes once per gaming session at least. Last night crashed 5 times, today wouldn't play Valorant for more than 5 minutes without crashing...Help me please! :)

    New Hard drive clicking

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:08 PM PDT

I just build my first PC and upgraded the storage with a hard drive. From the start the hard drive was making clicking sounds. I looked it up and immediately knew something was seriously wrong with the hard drive so I send it back. Now I received a new hard drive and I have the same problem, the drive works but it makes a non stop clicking sound about once a second. Even when I don't accès it and it's empty. I seriously doubt it's a HDD problem as I have the same problem twice!

    Specs:

    HDD Seagate 3.5" 2TB barracuda. Mobo: b450m mortar Max msi CPU : ryzen 5 3600 GPU : MSI gtx 1650 Super SSD: Crucial P1 500GB Nvme SSD Watercooler: cooler master ML240R PSU: Seasonic GC 500W Gold Ram : ddr4 16GB 3200hz Case : nzxth400

I tried switching cables. Nothing works. Why is my HDD clicking ? I should have plenty of power.

    Pls help :(

Hello! I'm new at building PC's and I don't have any experience. I need your help to give a rate on my Gaming Rig.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:13 PM PDT

I finally got money and now I can get my new PC. I want to use for Gaming and Editing videos, maybe streaming and photoshop. Everything I know about hardware is learned from internet. And I need your help to rate my rig and tell me what's wrong with it. (if i should buy diffrent component). And i'm also sorry for my bad English. These are my components.

    Motherboard: AsRock B450M Pro4

    Processor: Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz

Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce Gtx 1650 Super

    SSD: Samsung 500GB M.2 NVME MZ-V7E500BW 970 Evo

new computer: fan pressure on CPU stop the computer

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:13 PM PDT

So I have a super weird issue right now, and I'm badly in need for help

I built a new computer 2 days ago, but it was not powering on. At first I checked the power source and on/off switch by plugging them on my old computer, but it was working fine. Then I tried checking if there was an issue with the CPU, and then weird stuff started. As long as there is no fan on the CPU (meaning the cpu is visible), the computer power on, but as soon as I put the fan on the CPU and apply the smallest amount of pressure on it, the motherboard powers off.

Where is the issue ? is it the processor or the motherboard ?

Any help would be appreciated !

Game Development Student needing Unreal and 3D Rendering

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Hello! I'm a new game development student, trying to build my first PC. I don't know much about the technology yet, but I'll need to be able to run all the big stuff. We'll be working with Unreal and doing 3D Rendering and modeling to name a few. Does this look okay or is it too much? I want to be able to play the heavier games on it too. I'd like to not go over how much it already is, and if in fact you see anywhere I could cut back a little bit please let me know!

    Getting back into gaming

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:04 PM PDT

Hello all, it's been a while since I did any serious gaming, but I'm really excited about some games coming out later this year, so I want to build a solid rig so I can experience them the way they're meant to be experienced.

Problem is, as I look through all the components I'll need, I don't really know which attributes are important and which aren't as big of a deal (more GHz or more cores for the CPU? Besides RAM what matters for a GPU? How much RAM do I actually need?) or how to make sure everything plays nicely with everything else, so I'd really appreciate some help.

Star Wars: Squadrons and Cyberpunk 2077 top my list of games I want to play, and I don't need to have everything running at absolute maximum everything, but I really do want to be able to let the game engines show off. I don't plan to do any streaming or anything, if that matters.

I can go up to about $2,500-3,000 for the entire system, counting monitors. I'm debating between having a multi-monitor setup compared to one larger monitor, so I'd be curious about pros and cons both ways. And I do like all the RGB lighting stuff, I've never had anything like that before, so anything that includes that will be a plus for me.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts you have for me! :)

    CPU Upgrade??

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:02 PM PDT

Hi all. I currently have an rtx 2060 paired with a Ryzen 5 2400g and im looking to upgrade my cpu as this is the main limiting factor of my pc. I have a max budget of around £175 and dont mind going second hand if I have to. I mainly just want a faster cpu that still uses am4 socket. I was thinking a ryzen 5 3600? And other suggestions? Thanks.
