This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Dont forget about the Monitor

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 07:17 AM PDT

Here i am with my new 1440p 144hz ips Monitor in front of me, looking back and forth to my 1080p 60hz ips monitor and thinking "How was i so satisfied with the old one?"

It really is a big diffrence, i was 7 years in love with my decent 1080p 60hz monitor, now i kinda feel discusted by it. So either you are missing a "big thing" or you stay in the unknowing truth bubble, as i was until some hours ago.

Obviously im exaggerating a bit ^^

Thanks to this helpful and active sub, I could finally finish my first build ever! It was so relieving being able to search for (dumb) questions and find an answer for it here. I assembled this pc by just lurking around and taking notes lol.

It feels goodddd. 144hz gaming on high settings is truly life-changing haha. You guys are awesome!!

If anyone is interested in pics

Haven’t built a PC in 10 years. Let me know if you’d make any changes to this build.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 08:27 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7mpDHB

I've been out of the game for about 10 years and want to get back into it. Can you look this over and tell me what you think.

Some things are place holders like the ram can be any other 3200 16 gb ram that's available. I'm having a hard time finding a mobo and a psu as well. I do like the WiFi capabilities of this board but I can forego that. PC part picker is giving me a compatibility error but I have seen others say to ignore that?

    Thanks for the help!

Best budget 144 Hz monitor? Looking for sub $200

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 07:22 AM PDT

I am looking for a 144 Hz monitor for gaming. 1280p is fine but 1440 would be nice as well. Ideally, I would like for it to be under $200, but I realize this might not be realistic, so any recommendations (even above 200) would be appreciated!

I just bent and broke a pin on my R5 2600

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 09:05 AM PDT

Tried to upgrade the stock cooler. First time PC builder and learned everything from youtube. Watched a couple of videos on how to remove the CPU and thought I had it.

When I tried to pull the cooler, noticed it was stuck. Saw some comments online about how you need to twists it a bit. It came out alright but the CPU came with it and some of the pins bent. Blasted the CPU with a hair dryer and it came out. Tried to fix the pins with a credit card and tweezer and one of them just broke.

Lesson learned. Next time, make sure the cpu is still hot before trying to take off the cooler and AMD pins are fucking stupid and they should just do it like Intel does. I'm gonna cry myself to bed and find a new cpu tomorrow. Thanks for listening

What are some boneheaded PC building mistakes you've seen your friends make?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 11:27 AM PDT

Install radiators and fans without water cooling tubing or pump.

Break a USB port by forcefully plugging the type A jack the wrong way.

Neglect to ground the IO shield.

Neglect to use standoffs for motherboard.

    Throw away HDD sliding brackets.

Neglect to check the voltage and plug the device using the wrong voltage.

Out of the PC build game for some time, would appreciate everyone's input

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:32 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Thanks in advance for the efforts of this entire community, it is much appreciated for a guy who has been out of the PC build game for a while.

Let me know what you think, list posted below:

Purpose: Video editing, playing high resolution video, some web development, minimal gaming

Focal Point: A quiet system, no interest in elaborate LEDs on case

    Budget: around $1100-$1300

Note 1: I am within driving distance of a Microcenter and tried to focus on parts that are currently available at that store but can certainly go in a different direction for alternates based on your input.

Note 2: PCPartPicker is warning me that:

" The ASRock B550M Steel Legend Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector but the EVGA BQ 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply does not. This connector is used to supply additional 12V current to the motherboard. While the system will likely still run without it, higher current demands such as extreme overclocking or large video card current draws may require it. "

So that concerns me, I can't seem to find a power supply that avoids this warning.

Thoughts on a power supply? It certainly seems that a large number of them are out of stock/backordered/etc. Thanks again. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kBtrgJ

Need a second opinion on building a PC for Game Development

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 07:34 AM PDT

    Hi!

I'm currently at Uni studying game design and development, and my old laptop sadly isn't really good enough to effectiveley work on projects at home with or play any of the more demnding games out there, and especially with everything being work from home at the moment I figured this was the kick I needed to get a proper Desktop.

Unfortunately I don't really know anything about good PCs, so I asked my friend for help and he very kindly built this parts list up for me https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/ButtersTheNinja/saved/xC4cTW and I'd really love to get some second opinions.

I've been told the Ryzen 3700 might be a little overkill, but it's good for streaming which is something I can easily see myself getting more into. And I've also been recommended that I swap the 1x16 RAM for a 2x8 for mor efficieny, and get an "after market" cooler. Any thoughts on changes I should make?

HELP! My PC won't turn on!!

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 11:17 AM PDT

I'm freaking out. I took off the side panel to air dust my PC as the fan was super loud. But now it won't turn on when I have plugged it back in. It whirs up, the power light comes on for a second and then it turns off. I have no clue what's happened. I'm worried I've accidentally pulled out a cable.

    https://imgur.com/a/TrqjZbw

There's a photo of the motherboard and the hard drive and then the rest of the photos are of the cables that are all loose in the top corner, I'm worried it might be one of those??

These are the specs of the computer if that helps.

    Please anyone help!

I feel as though I am missing something as my Ryzen 5 3600x will not go over 4.1ghz.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:52 PM PDT

I know this is pertaining to OC and I don't have a specific problem.

I just never seem to be able to do these things right and I am probably more bothered than I should be that I think my CPU isn't performing up to its full potential.

As stated, Ryzen 5 3600x, Asus Prime X-570p MOBO.

I go into the AI tweaker in the BIOS. I have tried almost every combination pertaining to the CPU, leaving the voltage alone as it is at the recommended voltage I have read to not go over. I have no problem setting the RAM to 3200MHZ and it hits that no problem, which is what my RAM and CPU are rated for.

If I force the cpu speed in the BIOS to say, 4.2, it won't boot and I have to clear the CMOS. I tried doing it in increments in the AI Suite 3, and it seemed to work, but reset back to 4.1 upon restart.

I don't know if I am missing a setting or something, but 4.1 seems to be my limit.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    3200mhz or 3600mhz for ryzen 3600?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I've read that the ryzen CPUs only support up to 3200mhz in speed

Was thinking of buying 3600mhz but will it actually run at that speed?

Help me upgrade my 7 yr old PC.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I have 0 technical knowledge, my friend built a pc for me 7yrs ago for my gaming and game design aspiration needs. Since then I have only upgraded when a part malfunctioned. The replacement parts were always recommended by the technician I called. My graphic card died over a 18 months ago and since then I haven't repaired it due to financial constraints. Now I'm finally in a position where I can spend a little money on it but I have no clue what to do and my friend has moved to another country. I don't know which parts will be working cause I haven't checked in the last 8 months. Back then everything was working except the dead graphic card. Below is the current spec: AMD FX 8350(8 core) NVIDIA GTX 960 2gb ddr5 (dead) CORSAIR Vengeance 8gb ram Seagate 1TB hdd CORSAIR VS 550 PSU Cooler master hyper 212 CORSAIR carbide 400c mid tower AOC 19"inch Led monitor.

    I have only 500$ budget though :(

I don't know anything about pc hardware but I'm willing to learn.

    Help will be much appreciated.

Dell Optiplex 970 SFF (Novice needing help)

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 10:47 AM PDT

Hi guys, im new to the sub reddit and also new in terms of building a pc. I focus mainly on music production and have been thinking about upgrading my laptop I currently use. I was cleaning out my attic the other day and found an old Optiplex 970 SFF with an i5-2400 processor. While i know this by no feat is great or the newest model; i have read that these are sturdy machines and great for starting a custom build. I have a low budget of around £100-150 & have been looking into upgrading the RAM, SSD & GPU. While i dont particularly need a good graphics card, theres no harm in getting one right?

I have been doing a bit of research and came to the decision of a Kingston 240GB SSD.

Have also found a GeForce GTX 970 for the graphics (overkill for music primarily, i know but why not). Would this fit in the case of the SFF and would i also be able to keep the standard PSU or would i need to upgrade this too?

Any help for a complete novice would be ideal, Thanks.

Which graphics card should I buy between rx580 and gtx 1650 super?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 10:34 AM PDT

Well, I know that this might be the most common question but I yet haven't found a suitable answer anywhere else. I can't decide between these two known faces: gtx 1650 super and rx580. They cost more or less the same in my country. I literally don't care about 1080p high level gaming. 1080p mid or 720 high is ok with me. I know fps depends on the game itself, some games run better on Nvidia and some runs better on amd. What I want to know is, as the gaming scenario is changing, should I choose the rx580 for its 8 gb memory? Or gtx 1650 would last through this generation (yes, after a few years I will be ok with 720 mid or even low i guess)?

So, yes, what I really care about is sustainability. Will 580's 8gb memory last longer for upcoming games? Or 1650 super's newer architecture and stuff would be more appropriate?

Upgrading PC for running 4K 90hz VR

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 02:20 PM PDT

My current setup was intended for 1080p 144hz gaming, and it's served me pretty well.

    CPU: Ryzen 5 1600

    GPU: RTX 2060

    RAM: 2 x 8GB 3000Mhz DDR4

    PSU: 550W SuperNOVA

    Motherboard: ASUS B450-I Mini-ITX

Currently I also use an Oculus Rift S which has a resolution of 2560x1440 at 80hz. This pushes about the same number of pixels per second as 1080p144hz (~295M vs ~299M px/s), however I'm thinking about getting the HP Reverb G2 when it comes out in the fall. It has a much higher resolution of 4320x2160 at 90hz. This is obviously significantly more pixels to push (~840M px/s).

I'm looking at upgrading to a 2080, but I'm wondering if my CPU will be able to handle this resolution at this frame rate. I could upgrade to a 3600 or 3700x
