    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    6 cores CPU in 2020?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 03:48 AM PDT

TLDR: PS5 just released with 8 cores CPU. Would 6 cores be a problem for gaming 2-3 years from now?

Howdy. I'm planning to build a new PC, mainly used for games. I play kinds of games that are CPU hungry. Like beamng drive & cities skylines. Also, I'm planning to jump into VR gaming.

I already have a graphics card that currently serves my needs well, a GTX 1060 6GB, so it doesn't count towards my budget now.

I'm thinking of buying the Ryzen 5 3500 or 3600 (so you can think this as my budget). But what gets me thinking is the console release. With ps5 & new xbox coming with 8 cores, I'm worried that 6 cores CPU would be an issue 2-3 years from now.

All the tales so far have been "no games are utilising that many cores", but the fact consoles are using 8 cores, game developers will start making games that use all 8 cores.

Should I go with Ryzen 7 2000series to get more cores, or get the newer Ryzen 5 3000 series?

Edit: thank you for the overwhelmingly positive response people!

OH BOY. Folks, after dreaming of having a real gaming computer and only owning a gaming laptop I have finally completed my very own PC build! It was so much more work than I thought but it was all worth it for this. Very thankful for this community man. Even if I don't post here often I always read threads and honestly you guys, along with Linus Tech Tips and Gamers Nexus, were one of the biggest reasons I decided to finally pull the trigger and build my own computer finally.

So, here are some photos of my completed build!

    Some takeaways from me:

    1. The CPU: this was actually the first thing I bought and I bought it long before everything. But, after learning more about CPU's I realized AMD's chips would actually be better for me since I will be using this PC for gaming, video editing, and streaming. Because of this I am planning on actually starting a new build next month based around the AMD Ryzen 9 3950x! Will post that once it's complete.
    2. Air Cooler vs AIO: When I first started ordering parts my friend put the fear of god in me about AIO coolers, so I didn't get one. But after doing more research I feel more comfortable with the idea now and for my next build (above) I will most likely use an AIO cooler. Noctua is pretty sweet though!
    3. The GPU: My friend also told me to hold out for the 3000 line of GPUs instead of getting my 2080 ti, but I am going to wait to see what the specs on that are and if they are worth it. I will more than likely wait for the non-Nvida GPUs as well (Asus, MSI, etc). So for now this is more than enough in my opinion. But, maybe I'm a dummy.
    4. The PSU: Way too overkill but it was the only one I was able to find over what the minimum recommendation was. Works great though so far!
    5. The most important thing (to me): since I've completed this I no longer need the gaming laptop I was using before (which I posted about previously). Right now my wife is using it but in July I'm going to be giving it to my little brother. It's going to be his first gaming PC and I am so damn excited to give it to him.

Other thoughts: cable management is so much harder than videos make it seem lol

this sub is becoming a worldwide hub for help, meaning a large amount of post are people form outside of the US which completely change mayor factors like availability, used market, and price to performance equation between major brands.

Therefore a simple tag would make it so much simpler to provide help, and eliminate confusion about the different types of dollars ($cad, $aud).

Mouse in the Computer, No longer boots

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 07:14 AM PDT

One day last year I got home from work, try to boot the computer and within 5 seconds of normal booting up noises the computer turns off.

I try again a few more times and the same thing happens.

I leave it about 30 minutes and then try again but it gets worse. Only a split second of activity before nothing.

I open up the computer (I built the computer back in 2013) and find a live mouse. The mouse was probably there because of my cats but I don't how long it was there or how it even managed to get in there. It may or may not be related to the computer problems. I released the mouse and checked the connections but everything looks normal and no teeth marks, bare wires, mouse droppings or anything else odd looking.

I left it at that... The computer was already 6 years old and I laptop was was capable of doing anything I needed to do on a computer.

Roll on last week and because of lockdown, out of boredom I decide to diagnose the problems so I can fix my computer.

I thought it could be the PSU, so I purchased a PSU tester which I received this morning and I get the following reading:

    https://imgur.com/a/l7NgmVS

Sorry I didn't realise the picture quality was so bad, but everything looks fine other than the +5V reading, which shows 4.3 and flashes. I don't know if this is such a bad result and is causing the issue I'm having.

After doing this I took everything apart, and with just the processor (new thermal paste), one stick of RAM I am getting the same issue (see video below, I am using the case just for the power switch, and I try to power on twice). Note the PSU fan spins a little, the CPU fan does little more than twitches.

https://imgur.com/a/er8Qn01 - Apologies for the portrait video!

    Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

    Is Ryzen 5 3600 still worth the $80 over Ryzen 5 3500?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 04:16 AM PDT

Yep you read that right. Both cpus are on $80 price gap over here. A lot of people recommend getting the 3600 but price kinda varies in each country. What do you think?

Been dealing with the troubles of HDR on Windows 10

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 06:15 AM PDT

So I finally built a capable PC and bought an HDR 600 rated monitor. It's been an ordeal to set it up, to say the least.

Switching between SDR and HDR settings on the monitor depending on what I'm doing, using the right browser for HDR YouTube content (only Microsoft Edge works), or simply watching an HDR movie with a decent movie player is a hassle.

Then I noticed the sun was coming up. So, I went outside and I realized real life is in HDR...and this shit is beautiful. Just green, green everywhere, and the sun doesn't blot out the sky like a monolith. Shades of everything.

I was so used to scrutinizing the color depth and contrast ratio on this new monitor I feel like I forgot what real life color was like. Experiencing it first hand, coming from a dark room and a monitor, it was revealing to say the least.

The point is, I guess, don't get too wrapped up in making the experience perfect. It's gonna be as good as it gets, but it pales in comparison to the real thing. Enjoy it for what it is.

Please have a look at my budget build. (~500€)

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 01:55 PM PDT

    Hello people of reddit,

i´m finally able to build a modest PC. I´ve been comparing some components and builds, but my knowledge is limited and i would appreciate any professional insight before i make an expensive mistake.

My Budget is around 500€ and i´m building this PC in Germany, europe.

It is possible to switch some parts listed below for slightly more expensive ones, but there needs to be a good reason for it. I have a tight budget, but i also want to make a decent purchase which will last me a bit.

The only part i´m unwilling to exchange is the graphics card; Since i already use it in my current PC and it works fine enough for my purposes. I also have some HDDs lying around, which will be used together with the SSD.

I intend to use this computer for gaming. I´m mostly interested in playing games such as Dishonored 2, Crusader Kings 3, Borderlands 3, Bannerlord, and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. As long as i will be able to reach decent medium settings in games such as Cyberpunk and Dishonored 2 i´m content.

    The Build:

GPU: ASUS Geforce 1050ti (This can´t be replaced)

    Powersupply: 500 Silentium Vero L3

    SSD: 240 GB Patriot Burst

    Ram: 16GB (2*8GB) DDR4 GSKill 3000MHz Aegis

    Mainboard: MSI B450M Pro-VDH Max

    Processor: AMD RYZEN 3 1300X

Casing: ANTEC NX100 Or Kolink Stronghold

    Windows 10

    End

    Some more specific questions:

Is it worth it to spend a little exta on a 500W Seasonic Core-GC? I´ve seen quite a lot of people stressing the importance of getting a gold certified power unit.

Is the ANTEC case big enough to be comfortable? I don´t care much for looks, but i would like to be able to comfortably replace and switch parts.

    PC power decreasing over time

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 09:55 AM PDT

I noticed over the time of my pc that the 3d mark score is lower than it should be, by about 500ish, and still decreasing. Anyone know how I can slow down the rate my pc is getting weaker, what I can do to keep it high, or if it's just silicon lottery giving me lower scores?

    New PC builders guide

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 12:15 AM PDT

As someone who recently built their 7th pc, I thought I'd help people out with their first time build experience. Knowing how crazy the shortages are for parts, I know there's quite a few of you out there.

These are solely based off my time building and I will only speak for myself or trusted individuals near me. These are opinions! Criticism and anything that anyone wants to add or ask about go ahead.

Best stores to buy from (digitally, micro-center doesn't count)

1.Newegg. Pretty much just amazon that focuses on electronics and the technology world. Very reputable and if you have a problem, their customer service is a good thing to go through. Prices are always competitive and more likely than not, has in stock products others don't. Better for dealing with a defective/doa (dead on arrival) product, rather than a product you broke. Look just stop breaking stuff!

    1. Amazon. Yes they're not always best priced but if you ever have a problem and need to RMA, their process is very straightforward and easy. Almost like they expect it to happen sometimes... But regardless of the problems you may have, any other store would give you the same problem of how to deal with it. From my experience if a part is defective, you find out relatively quick. Amazon having a very good return window and processing of the return makes it much less frustrating with your problems, if any.

    2. Directly from the manufacturer. (asus motherboard =asus. com, NZXT case= NZXT. com, etc). This is a sure way to garuntee you're getting new products directly from them, and can usually see how good/bad a product is in demand based off their website. If they have sold out everywhere, expect everywhere else to be as well. (Amazon, unsurprisingly, being the usual exception, sometimes). Assuming this list will be helpful, and assuming you aren't the most well read with Amazon. You can buy something "new" from Amazon and have an already RMA'd item be shipped. Regardless if it works or not, once you have problems with it, you'll have no way to RMA through the maker anymore. This has happened to me twice. An asus motherboard, and a GTX 980. Both bought new, but once the rma process began, received a "this serial number has already been RMA'd" back. Very frustrating, but rare.

    3. Best Buy. For me this has always been a last ditch effort for something I really need and don't care about price or time of arrival. Customer service is eh. Only experience I have with rma/returns was through ghost stories and geek squad tales. Avoid if others are not working out.

How to find out if your pc parts are compatible.

    1. Pcpartspicker(.com). Just plug in your build and the site will automatically tell you if there are any problems had. Any builds I do start and usually end on their.

    2. Youtube reviews / build guides. Using pcpartspicker in tangent with this will usually be the entire process in its entirety. Take one of my favorite tech channels, Paul's Hardware. Once a month, they do a build guide and give a quick run down of the pros and cons, including price and where to buy. Very good starting point to go and edit to fit your needs and price point. Once you have a build, look up how to install x component and install x card and it gets simpler from there. If you do want to learn about your options, youtube can pretty much be the entire process as well. Just do your research.

    3. There's always Reddit too...

These are all opinions. Thank you for your time and if this indeed helped you with a build, enjoy.

    1080P vs 4K Monitor buying

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 06:36 AM PDT

Hi all! I am currently in the market for new monitors. Ideally I would like three matching monitors of the same size. However I am torn. I would LOVE 2k or 4k matching monitors, but that's way too much money. With YouTube now marking 720P as non HD anymore, would I be making a horrible mistake on getting decently nice 1080P monitors vs 4k? or two 1080P and 1 4k? Max size would be about 27". My concern is that 1080P will soon be so obsolete I have to buy new monitors sooner.

PC is mostly used for gaming, but I would also be doing work with the monitors.

Is it worth paying extra dollars for an ssd?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 06:56 AM PDT

Thinking about getting 1 tb ssd. im currently in between samsung 860 qvo and 860 evo. I will be using it for general purposes and gaming. Is it worth paying extra 70$ for it? What will i be losing, what are the benefits? Should i get different ssd?

    • Samsung 860 QVO 1TB 550MB-520MB/s Sata 3 2.5" SSD (MZ-76Q1T0BW) - 890 Turkish Liras(130 USD)

    • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB 560MB-520MB/s Sata3 2.5" SSD(MZ-76E1T0BW) - 1400 Turkish Liras(205 USD)

    • SanDisk Ultra 3D 1TB 560MB-530MB/s Sata 3 2.5" SSD (SDSSDH3-1T00-G25) - 1060 Turkish Liras(155 USD)

    • Sandisk Plus 1TB 535MB-450MB/s Sata3 SSD (SDSSDA-1T00-G26) - 900 Turkish Liras(130 USD)

edit: to be clear, im not talking about ssd vs hdd. I own an ssd and will be getting a new one but i was wondering if its worth paying additional 500 Turkish Liras (70 USD) for a different model ssd

second edit: i bought the qvo from amazon, should arrive tomorrow. thanks everyone!

Disabling the Intel Management Engine Backdoor on Modern Hardware.

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 01:28 PM PDT

Two quick things to get out of the way first: A.) I am in no way connected to the project linked below, I just think it is quite cool, and B.) yes this is a throw-away account for reasons.

If you want to begin looking into why Intel Management Engine (Intel ME) is a potential privacy and security hazard, you can start by consulting this thread and some of the comments and links: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/bbz8gr/how_intel_wants_to_backdoor_every_computer_in_the/).

**Onto the meat of this post:** for a while now the most modern hardware you could get with Intel ME disabled was 7000 series Intel *at best* unless you could run ME_cleaner 12 yourself which is no easy task and even then success was not guaranteed. Now however (or really for the last year+ but I just happened to find it) someone has found that the AsRock Z390 Taichi motherboard has the HAP bit left somewhat exposed, and with a little modding they've been able to make a BIOS version with the HAP bit turned off: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/asrock-z370-z390-taichi-and-some-others-actively-modding-firmware-with-intel-management-engine-disabled-new-method.259319/, essentially disabling (not deleting) Intel ME. In other words your motherboard will now look basically just like the ones the US government itself buys: Intel HAP bit disabled thus Intel Management Engine disabled.

All you need to do to get it to work is to follow the instructions to update the BIOS on the Z390 Taichi board, and you will have significantly reduced the chances of the Intel ME backdoor being an issue for you. The process is very n00b friendly (unlike ME_cleaner), and the mobo and chips are getting pretty wallet-friendly too. To further remove the chances of ME being an issue, use a NIC and/or Wifi card with a chipset NOT built by Intel. The combination of the two should get the chances of the ME backdoor being a problem down to near zero.So now using this specific motherboard + BIOS combo we can have up to Intel 9000 series chips Intel ME-free (or at least disabled).

If you do choose to do this, I'd also suggest getting an Intel chip without hyperthreading: https://www.techradar.com/news/intel-cpus-can-be-exploited-unless-you-disable-hyper-threading-linux-dev-claims (or at least disable it).

If you have questions please contact the OP of the above linked thread, I'm just a n00b who is glad to be able to increase security/privacy (if only slightly) on a relatively modern system. The relevance to this sub (which is mostly gaming and work related builds) is obvious, but to spell it out: if you want to build a modern-ish system with no (known) hardware level backdoors, this is the easiest way to do it.

Just completed my first build and I couldn't be happeir!

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 01:22 PM PDT

I know there are probably hundreds of these going around right now but I just wanted to share how stoked I am now that I completed my first pc build! This build would have been impossible if it were not for this reddit and r/buildapcforme, so thank you all. When I was building it, I actually freaked out because it wouldn't boot. I unplugged everything, reapplied thermal paste, etc. only to realize after surfing this sub, that I didn't push my RAM hard in enough. Sure enough, the sticks had been loose the entire time. Absolute idiot move on my part but I guess we all make mistakes sometimes. Unfortunately, now that I have joined the pc master race I am scared for the future of my bank account, especially since I will be a college student next year but hopefully I can subsidize new gpus and cpus with a job and STONKS. Any ways, felt like I had to share. (Here are the parts for the SFF build below, I had to switch out the PSU because of COVID supply restrictions) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dZXyyk

    Gigabyte B450M DS3H / Ryzen 3 3200G compatibility

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I am looking to build 2 new computers, 1 for my parents and 1 for my grand parents. Both are using 10+ year old machines with integrated graphics. No gaming capabilities needed. As such, I believe the AMD 3200G would be an excellent cost effective fit.

As for motherboard options, I am less sure. It would seem that the Gigabyte B450M DS3H is a good fit:

My questions however, it seems that this board is only compatible with the 3200G with a bios update (that this board now comes with preinstalled?) My question is what happens if there is a BIOS failure of the motherboard of some kind? Is it possible for the motherboard to "lose" it's support for the 3200G and the machine to be bricked without flashing bios using an old CPU?

Thank you to those that take the time to read / reply.

    Used AIO Cooler?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 01:12 PM PDT

I know there is always a risk involved buying used components. But has anyone purchased a used AIO before? Is there anything specific we should examine/inspect before making the purchase?

Any help will be appreciated i don't know specifically what you need to edit 4k videos but i thought the 3900x would be the best at it in this price range. And do you need a good GPU for video editing?

    Debating upgrading this year

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 02:34 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm currently debating on whether or not to upgrade this year or wait for DDR5 in 2021. I currently have:

    • GTX 1080
    • Ryzen 1700X
    • 32GB ram at 2800Mhz

I get acceptable FPS in practically all games, but I recently got a 1440p, 144hz monitor, and I'd really like to take full advantage of that. My main games are Escape from Tarkov, WoW and CS:GO. I would most likely wait for Ryzen 4000 release and the 3000 series from Nvidia. Any thoughts?
