This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Just finished my first PC build.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 03:43 AM PDT

Just finished my first build. It took me like 3 hours and then a couple for trouble shooting.

Thanks for the help lads. Can't wait to get roof camped in rust for the next 6 hours.

It ain't much. But it's mine. And I love it

I've had the PC for a little bit. First time building this was in a Phanteks P350x. After finishing my build, the side panel shattered as I was putting the glass back on. If you haven't had that happen before, it is heartbreaking. Thankfully Phanteks was really cool and sent me a replacement side panel, but I think I only put it back on once or twice. Was too scared to leave it on. After some time, I decided I wanted something a little bit bigger. I looked at hundreds of cases. Was stuck between a few, and this one caught my eye, but I hadn't thought too hard on it, as my first build was in a cheap corsair carbide with no power supply basement/attic and almost no cable management. After reading reviews and watching a few videos, I decided to purchase this one. Building in it was fun, somewhat challenging, but definitely felt great. Two panels of tempered glass is definitely daunting, but man is it pretty when all them lights go off.

Build: ASUS Tuf Gaming X570 Wi-Fi

Ryzen 5 3600 with Wraith Prism cooler

XFX Radeon RX 5700 Triple Dissipation

    Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000 Mhz RAM @ 16GB

    3x Thermaltake RGB fans

3x Corsair LL120 fans (to be honest will probably sell these once I can find a decent price for more thermaltakes)

Corsair 465x iCue RGB Mid-Tower ATX case

Again, it's not a powerhouse, but it fits my needs well.

Edit: I didn't expect this much hate for the post. I am not trying to humble brag or downplay the PC. As I stated in a comment, I figured going with a sub $400 GPU and the Ryzen 5 3600 would not be considered high end or even that great compared to all of the builds I've seen on here. I apologize for anyone that I offended with this post and just wanted to contribute something to the community.

Major success on my First $2K Build

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:09 PM PDT

Throughout my life, I always get pre-built PCs and now, I wanted something more. When I upgrade, I always go for the big guns. I got my parts separately since last year and built up from there. I buy and resell items on my ebay store where I practically got a $2K PC for $200.

Here's the photo of my parts: https://i.imgur.com/sxDyPYz.jpg

My Built is focused entirely on Silence, Power, and Performance with RGB given no attention. I can barely hear this beast at all. Be Quiet!'s name certainly matches their description.

    Final Parts List:

    • Motherboard - Asus TUF Gaming x570-Plus WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard
    • CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Octa-Core 3.6 GHz Desktop Processor
    • GPU - GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER White Triple Fan
    • RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 16 GB (2 X 8GB) 3000 MHz
    • SSD (2) - Samsung 860 EVO V-NAND 2 TB & Samsung 860 EVO V-NAND 500 GB
    • PSU - Corsair RM 650 Watt 650x 80+ Gold Certified Power Supply
    • Case - be quiet! Silent Base 601 Window Black Mid-Tower ATX w/ 2 140mm fans
    • Cooler - be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 Silent Wings Air
    • Fans (2) - be quiet! Pure wings 2 140 mm fan w/PWM (Total 4 Fans)

I wanted to thank you guys for motivating me in getting descent parts and teaching myself a skill that'll help me later on. So long pre-built PC'S! : )

What are the best budget gaming keyboards?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:50 AM PDT

Firstly, what makes a good gaming keyboard?

    • What are the best switches?
    • What separates gaming keyboards from workstation keyboards?

    Preferences:

    • Cheap, like under $40, but I'd be willing to drop $50 if it really is necessary.
    • I know that the switches are personal preference, but I really can adapt to any switch (since it'll be my first PC). What do most professional players use?
    • I don't really care if it's tenkeyless or not (should I care?)

    New build

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:40 AM PDT

    Hi.

I'm looking to build a PC for gaming and home office. A lovely redditor, UnknkownSoldier at buildapcforme, gave me a great suggestion but I've modified it a bit due to restrictions of certain parts in Australia and wanted to make sure it still works or in case i've chosen things that aren't very cost effective.

Planning to use it for games such as Doom eternal, Monster hunter world and probably Lol (although I'll try to stay away from it). Besides that just regular office stuff and might grab a second monitor for work, (I already have one). Aiming to keep around 2K (Australian) but have no set hard limit

Please let me know the myriad of ways I have done this wrong.

    Thanks so much

B450 Tomahawk max without m.2 screw?

I have bought this piece and now I can't lock m.2 disk because there no screw attached, I have seen on some videos online that it should come with 1 small bag with m.2 screw but there is none. Any idea on where to get this?

Can I reinstall windows on a new SSD if I only have my product key?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:58 PM PDT

when I first built my PC, I bought a windows USB for around $100 and just plugged it in for installation. This was 5 years ago and I have no idea where that drive could be now, but I do have my product key still. Is installation possible, or am I just screwed?

15 years Mac user excitedly making the leap. First ever build advice! (£1.5k)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Hello! Product photographer/Designer here. Seasoned Mac user, about to take the plunge and put a PC together for the first time. Made the decision primarily on the basis that I'm thoroughly enjoying cinema4d and want to render much faster than my MBP will allow & want super slick Creative Cloud apps. That's all! No gaming. Just a powerful workhorse. Fast & reliable. A Mac Pro feels like a foolish purchase when this tech is available. Anyone been in the same boat?

This is where I'm at so far:

Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 PRO CARBON WIFI MOTHERBOARD

    Processor AMD RYZEN 7 3700X AM4 CPU

    Ram CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX 32GB (2x16) DDR4 DRAM 3200mhz C16 Memory Kit

Graphics Card ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE RTX 2060 SUPER EVO 8GB OC GRAPHICS CARD

Power Supply CORSAIR CP-9020188-UK 750 W RM850x FULLY MODULAR ATX

I'm hoping that this will be pokey enough to last a few years before having to upgrade.

    • I want to invest in a case that's not limiting, that will last a long time, that I can add to. Size isn't an issue. What should I be looking for?

    • would I be ok using the cooler that comes with my processor? Do I need to liquid cool this system?

    • as I'm moving from Mac, do you recommend a certain keyboard/mouse combo, or even using key mapping, or should I just forcibly alter my keystroke muscle memory?

    • I'm relying on Dropbox at the moment - heavily. Should I set up a backup system within the pc or rely on a nas instead?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me.

My Computer is randomly shutting down when playing games.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:56 PM PDT

So, I built my computer in October last year. It was working fine up until around March this year. I've had issues with my GPU breaking down, and stopping output to my monitors. But the main issue now is my computer shutting down when playing games. I suspect its a Power supply issue but I'm not entirely sure. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Advice on $800 first gaming build, how does it look?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:05 PM PDT

I am looking to build my first computer, and after some research I think I want to go with an AMD build. Here are the parts I am thinking about. I am mostly set on the CPU and graphics card after a lot of research, but everything else I am comfortable changing if it makes sense to do so. Anything jump out that I should improve on here, or anything I can trim down to save money? I want a pc build to play modern titles at 1080 and last me 3-4 years playing games on medium. In my research I kept seeing a lot of the same parts mentioned as favorites and reliable, so I mostly went with those.

A big thank you to this community and a special thx to member CyberIntel, couldn't have done it with him/her (🤔)! Already did the thing I always do when getting a new pc: Playing Half Life 2 🤷‍♀️🐧 just did some cable management and it's good to go now.

WARNING TO EVERYONE THINKING OF PICKING THE SAME COMPONENTS: The Thermaltake Core V1 and the Gigabyte Aorus I X570 Pro Wifi are NOT compatible! There are stand offs that prevent fastening the screws. I managed to 'shave' off some material so the mainboard's backplate could fit in. But unless you're prepared for some physical modding, choose different components. Unfortunately, pcpartpicker will tell you they fit - I already sent them a message, hope they fix their list.

Having trouble finding a nice case that wont get me broke

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:57 PM PDT

I love the Corsair ICue cases but they're listed for cheap on the corsair website but are about 40-60 bucks more expensive at retailer sites. I also see reviews for these cases and I don't feel like they're worth it. Any suggestions for cases? I'm looking for a mid sized tower that is white and has nice rgb fans in the front.

Edit: don't want to go over 200 dollars unless you think its worth it

    Looking for ~ 24" 1920x1080p 144hz IPS Display

Basically looking to upgrade my monitor and ended up wanting the specs shown above on the title.
+/- 1 inch would be alright when it comes to size

Just want the monitor to have a decent response time as it will be used for competitive gaming and budget-wise I wouldn't mind going to about 270EUR (~300USD).

I can't seem to find many great monitors that are in stock, since the current situation with Covid is pretty fucked.

Looking to get back into PC gaming

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:44 PM PDT

So for the past decade or so I've mostly be using console gaming as my outlet but with Cyberpunk and Bloodlines 2 on the horizon I'm looking to go with a Desktop PC for my gaming needs.
I've been looking at a variety of 'pre-built' desktops, but I was told that they mostly use generic knock off parts, or at least older model versions for escalated prices. That same someone told me to jsut build a PC to suit my needs.

My issue has become that I know nothing about the components anymore, there seem to be six versions of the same part with differing letters being the only difference (which mean nothing to me). People keep asking me what FPS, and overclocking, etc etc an I just have no idea what the answer is (or even what the question means tbh).
Is it viable for me to build my own machine? Will I be spending 2 months researching what parts work with what I want? Am I better off just buying a prebuilt?

Sorry for the newb question, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Bad cinebench 20 performance with Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 10:37 AM PDT

I saw on the internet that the Ryzen 5 3600 gets around 3700 points in CB 20, but when I run it with everything at stock settings, I get at most like 3200. Why does this happen?

Turning on or off PBO doesn't make any noticeable difference. Another weird thing is that I'm idling at 50-55C with a peak core voltage of 1.25V. My cooler is the Cooler Master 212 EVO from my FX 8320.

When the system is at full load at stock settings, it gets 75C and clocks to 3950 MHz at 1.27V, instead of the 4.2 GHz promised boost.

When only one core is at full load, it also doesn't reach 4.2 GHz, but peaks at 4050-4100 MHz at 1.42V.

Only way for me to reach 3600 points in CB 20, is by settings the max clock speed to 4.2 GHz at 1.175V peak core voltage in Ryzen Master.

Why do I get such bad performance at the default settings, but better performance with quite a low core voltage?

I have PBO turned off and everything in the BIOS on auto. Drivers are all up to date, except for the motherboard because with the latest BIOS, the fan control page becomes unresponsive, so it is running the second most recent version. Power options is using the Ryzen Balanced profile. This is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Bx4YYH

What do I need to do to hit 4.2 GHz on all cores and reach 3700 points in CB 20?
