This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I finally have the money to buy a brand new gaming PC for Alyx and the prices of rigs AND parts has risen almost 30%

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 05:17 AM PDT

I live in Australia and prices are absolutely cooked right now. Most parts have increased in price by about 30%. SSDs have doubled in price. Pre built rigs (gross, I know) have all sold out. This is the worst time to buy. I just want to play Alyx. 😭

The Quest for the Silent PC (and how my loudest component wasn't a fan)

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 05:26 PM PDT

So I finally saved up enough dough to build my quiet PC build, featuring a Fractal Design C case and Noctua NH-D15S CPU cooler. I thought I was finally entering computing bliss, until I booted.

    WHRRRRRR

Maybe my expectations were too high. I didn't splurge on aftermarket case fans after all; how good can the prepackaged fans be?

So I put up with it, and told myself to quit paying attention to it.

Two weeks later, I was happy with my build, except…. I couldn't get over that noise. I had to turn my PC off when I slept (it lives in my bedroom), and I kept finding myself absentmindedly browsing replacement case fans for the stock Fractal Design fans. Every time I did, I stopped myself: Is it really worth the money? The dB ratings aren't THAT much lower, you're just obsessing over it, and you'll be disappointed.

Well today, after messing with fan curves in the bios, I snapped - opening the case and unplugging fan headers one-by-one to track down the noise. And with every fan unplugged, the noise remained.

Putting my ear to the case, I finally got next to the shroud over the HDD cage:

    WHRRRRRRR

Crap. I had two old HDDs mounted in there, to free up space from my boot SSD. I'd actually been preoccupied with the new system and working on an overclock and hadn't touched the secondary drives yet. I knew one had old pictures and other media on it, and the other was an old Ubuntu boot drive from a PC of an earlier time…

    Double crap.

I searched the HDD cage, and sure enough, the drive driving me crazy over the last two weeks was an Ubuntu boot drive, not recognized or assigned in Windows, spinning its little heart out doing nothing. Pulled the drive and it was HOT.

Screw HDDs. SSD only now and proud of it.

Mail-in rebates shouldn't count as savings

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 01:05 PM PDT

If I buy a $450 GPU and its mail-in rebate is $30 the GPU is still $450 now $420. First of all you if you get the rebate it'll come 8-12 weeks later. Depending on where you buy the product from you might not get the rebate. I followed the rebate instructions to a T and it was rejected. Others had the same issue. Rebates are hit or miss. I also can't put the prepaid card in my bank account. Its on a visa card.

When recommending a build don't count the $100 in savings as rebates thats not cool

$500 build - is it any good?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:01 PM PDT

I've researched for years and waited, and I can finally afford to build... something. $500 doesn't get you much computer, but coming from a 4-year-old HP AIO anything is better. I also have the monitor in this list, I'm planning on waiting until B&H gets it back in stock for $105. I'm open to either a 1650S or a 580, but the GPU listed, although a great deal for a 1650S, is preorder at B&H and out of stock elsewhere, and the next cheapest 1650S puts me more over budget than I already am. Is it very much better than a 580? Anyways, here's the list:

Trying to retire current pc to a secondary pc. Need help with new pc parts.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 02:51 PM PDT

Intended use for this build is purely gaming and a bit of streaming every now and then and web surfing. The problem I have with my current build is that when streaming, my friends tell me it lags and microstutters like crazy. Also my cpu seems to be bottle necking my gpu, but I'm not sure. It is just time for an upgrade!

(This is my current build list for my current pc:https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2yXnK4)

I want to spend about collectively $1200-$1300, I'll go for a max budget of $1400 if it desires. I'm not going to buy all the parts at once, I will buy them as i see them go on sale for a good price here at bapcsales.

I'm located in the US, specifically California, so a lot of retail physical locations are closed due to COVID-19, but I'm mostly ordering online

I want to have at least 16gb of ram, if not more, because I do use quite a bit when I host gaming servers for my friends. CPU choice, I haven't kept up with AMD or Nvidia, but I would like a Nvidia card, I just can't decide between the RTX choices. Do note, I game on a 1080 144hz monitor primarily and don't blame on changing monitors anytime soon unless I see a really good deal for a 1440p one. I'm not sure which motherboard is good for the 3600, but I would like one that gives me good overclock performance. Would like a good aftermarket cooler suggestion too.

This is what I got going, note the SSD, HDD, and NVME choices are just placeholders in what I want in terms of storage.

    Finally Upgrading to Ryzen

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:00 PM PDT

    Hey everyone -

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Ryzen upgrade for my aging CPU/MOBO platform. I'm currently running an i5-4590 with a Z87 board and 24GB of DDR3 and while this combination has served me well for the last few years and still runs pretty well, I've begun to notice performance issues in Warzone and some other titles, and could also use some more power for rendering in Autodesk programs. I'm matched with a 1080ti that I got a little over a year ago. I'm planning on doing curbside pickup at my local Microcenter to pick up the following:

A Ryzen 5 3600, a Aorus B450 Pro Wifi board, and 16GB of Vengeance RGB 3200 (with the plan to pick up another 16 GB down the line).

My main question is - what do I have to do on the software/driver front to make this all work without reinstalling Windows, and is there anything I may be overlooking? I know about the need to flash some B450 boards to work with Zen 2, and I know I could go with 3600 speed RAM but I'd rather save the money over the minimal difference and probably just try to tighten the timings or something later down the line. I will be transferring over my current drives (2 SATA SSDs and a HDD) and adding in a M.2 drive I pulled from my last laptop (mostly to transfer files). Am I going to have problems with switching my current OS/system to an AMD platform?

New Zotac RTX 2080 Super for $550CAD - Good?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 02:29 PM PDT

Hi all. I'm wondering if I made the right decision last night. I will be working with Revit, 3DsMax, Octane, Unreal Engine, and Redshift. I picked up a brand new never been used Zotac 2080 Super(T20820h-10p) for $550CAD. The guy I bought it from off Kijiji had a mining farm using 1060 ti and 1070 ti's. He sent them all back to Zotac under warranty and Zotac sent back New 2070's and 2080 Supers. He had said the price of coin dropped recently and that it wasn't cost effective to run machines. So he's unloading cards. The card looks perfectly serene, heavy, serial numbers and everything is there, and comes in a basic black box with logo and picture of fan on it in grey, but all packed very nicely. Seems legit. Was this a good deal? Is Zotac reputable enough? Online reviews are mixed. Thanks for any advice.

One CPU core hotter than the rest

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 02:05 PM PDT

    hi all!

Ive got a i7-9700k that has one core which is warmer than the others. I've read its normal to see core 1 working harder than the rest, but in my case its core nr 5 out of 8. I dont know how long its been doing it for, but its working completely fine otherwise. Jumps between 3-10 degrees difference between the other cores during gaming.

Its about 1 year old and haven't been overclocked.

I've added a picture bellow to show how it looks like incase its any help

    Practice PC Building

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:03 PM PDT

I was looking on ebay and making old PC's on pcpartpicker, but I don't know if there is an easier way to do it.

    Upgrading RAM Dilemma

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I've been getting into Escape from Tarkov as of late. For those of you that aren't aware, this game eats RAM like it's nothing. I last upgraded my PC around 5 years ago, and I'm finally starting to realize that 8GB of DDR3 1333mHz isn't going to cut it anymore. I have 3 options that I am currently weighing:

    1) Buy 2x4GB of the exact same model RAM that I currently have for ~$40 total "used" off Amazon. (Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1333mHz) This would prevent any mismatch issues I might run into with different brands/clock speeds.

    2) Buy 2x4GB of Patriot Signature DDR3 1600mHz brand new for $37.99. I realize my computer will only run these at 1333mHz in conjunction with my current RAM.

    3) Buy 2x8GB of either "A-Tech" or "TECMIYO" DDR3 1600mHz brand new for around $63 off Amazon. I haven't heard of either of these brands before, however.

I guess option 4 would be upgrade to a newer processor that uses DDR4, but that means investing another $500 into a new CPU/mobo/RAM. My current specs are i5-4570 with an ASUS STRIX 1070 8GB.

What do you guys think? I'm leaning towards either option 1 or 3. Also open to other RAM brand suggestions (budget ~$80 for 16gb). I'm at least thankful that RAM prices aren't insane like they were when I was building my PC.

Want to use RTX Voice, however 1660 Ti isn't supported. Would it be worth upgrading just to use?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 03:11 PM PDT

    Hello all!

I started streaming just over a month ago, and with RTX Voice I was super excited about getting rid of my fan background noise. I would really like to be able to use it, however would it be worth to upgrade just for this?

For those curious, here is my setup. What GPU wuld be worth yet most affordable? I also play VR and Bluestacks and have 2 monitors, would it be difficult to replace the GPU? (Not talking about PC replacement, but like would I need to reset anything software-related for the upgrade)

    Dual monitor setup - 27" widescreen w/ 19" vertical?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2020 03:09 PM PDT

    I am running a single 27" widescreen monitor at 2560x1440. Dimensions are 24.2" x 14.2" x 2.0" (614 x 360 x 52 mm) . My desk doesn't have enough space for a 2nd 27" monitor.
I was thinking I can purchase a 19" 1440x900 monitor and rotate it vertical.
The problem is no one really sells a 19" monitor any more and I can't seem to find one which matches the dimensions closely (14.2" vertical to match the 27").
Is there a monitor out there that would be a suitable match?

So, this is my build. I have a 144hz 1440p monitor and I hope this is good for that. I would prefer to stay around $1050, but I can go to $1100 if needed. This build is meant for gaming, as well as recording/editing YouTube videos and light streaming. Please leave suggestions on what could be better in this build. Also, is it worth it to wait until this coronavirus situation is over or will it be the same price wise?

So this is my second time building a PC. I'm planning to try and build an NZXT H1. I know the case is pretty expensive compared to the rest of my build but I really like the design so I'm willing to splurge on it.

However, I would like suggestions for a different motherboard. Frankly, for the components I'm using I feel like the motherboard is a little overkill... plus its like $220. Anyone have suggestions for cheaper? I've been looking at ASRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX/ac Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard but when I try using it in pcpartpicker, I get some error about needing to update the motherboard before using it? I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with doing that...
