    Simple Questions - April 21, 2020

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Make sure to tighten your air coolers/water blocks over your CPUs, guys....

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 06:28 AM PDT

Apologies if this isn't the correct subreddit, I'll delete the post if necessary.

So I had to disassemble my pc and move it, but after re-assembling it it wouldn't stop crashing. Tried everything from flashing a new BIOS to swapping the PSU. Nothing. I finally decided I must have damaged the CPU/motherboard while traveling, so I went ahead and upgraded to a new processor, motherboard, and air cooler. No crashes anymore.

Well, after removing the old motherboard with the air cooler and CPU still on it, I took a closer look at the socket and realized the cooler was askew and that there was a slight gap on one side between the cooler and the IHS. Bewildered, I took the cooler off the motherboard... and was welcomed by this. Yep, that's how the system ran for about 3 weeks... The brackets of the cooler were slightly loose, and I imagine I must not have put enough pressure on the 4 corners to create a tight seal.... (Also, curse whoever came up with that horrible push-a-plastic-peg-through-a-hole-in-the-motherboard mounting mechanism Intel stock coolers and my old Deep Cool cooler use...)

The flip side is I had an excuse to upgrade my system (here's how it looks now, if anybody's curious), but the moral of the story is make sure to tighten your cooling solutions to your CPUs appropriately, so you avoid this sort of trouble, guys; don't be a dunce like me.

Which CPU? AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or i5-9600k for RTX 2060 Super GPU

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 02:10 AM PDT

Having trouble deciding between what CPU to get, and will any of these options bottleneck?
I will mainly be gaming, but also some photoshop editing here and there. I don't mind the price of the two CPUs, or if anyone has any recommendations of other CPUs please share. I've heard that Ryzen is better, but after looking at a bunch of similar and different comparisons, my mind still can't decide.

    Cooler for Ryzen 3600X

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 04:56 AM PDT

I've been looking into coolers for my AM4 socket where I will most likely buy a ryzen 3600X in the future. From what I can tell Noctua NH-D15 is a great cooler and I've seen it recommended multiple places for use on AM4. Problem is when I'm browsing the stores where I live, it says that the cooler supports these sockets:

    - Intel socket LGA 775, 1150, 1151, 1155, 1156, 1366
    - Intel socket 2011, 2011-3 (mounting kit required - available separately)
    - Intel socket 2066 (square ILM)
    - AMD socket AM2/AM2+, AM3/AM3+, FM1, FM2/FM2+ (backplate required - available separately)

Is this because the cooler was released before the AM4 socket and it isn't updated? Or simply can't I use the cooler for AM4?

    Monitors Nowhere to Be Found...

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 07:16 AM PDT

Seems like just 1-2 weeks ago, there was a surplus of 1440p 144hz 27-32" monitors available on various sites for under $320. Now I can't really find any. I guess the Covid-19 supply chain effect is really taking toll right now. Just me expressing my difficulties searching for one. Luckily I was able to find and order all of the parts for my first PC after some rigorous searching and watching. Hopefully I can find a decent monitor soon! End rant//

I’m building a pc for my best friend. His dad passed last year and he hasn’t been the same since. He’s always talked about wanting a PC but his family is really poor. Mine isn’t much better, but I was working 2 jobs before this corona thing.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 11:37 AM PDT

We always used to have fun on Xbox but I moved to PC and he doesn't have anyone to play with anymore. I just miss the good times in an Xbox live party. Goofing around like it wasn't a school night. It tore me up to see him so down. He was always such a happy go-lucky guy and now he barely speaks to anyone. I just want to be able to play with him again. I have been saving up about 8 months for this. I'm gonna buy it for him after this corona virus thing blows over because I'm about $300 short of the price (~$1400). If anyone has some tips or advice for his build let me know. I want it to be perfect. Anything else isn't good enough for him. Any help/tips/advice would be appreciated. Thank you all so much in advance.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 05:37 AM PDT

So i'm going to get a Ryzen 5 v1600AF, but the GPU is where i'm stuck. I can get a 1650s and an 80PLUS gold semi modular PSU for the same price as a 1660 and a non modular 80PLUS bronze. Which one should i go with?

    First PC build help

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 06:21 AM PDT

Old PC stopped working yesterday so I plan to just start from scratch as a treat for graduating.

    - I'ts my first time building a PC and after doing some research... I'm still not really sure what I'm doing.

    - The intended use for this build will be for CAD/3D modelling (Blender, Fusion 360) and some gaming (Terraria, Minecraft, graphics intensive survival games etc.)

    - Budget is around £850

    -In the UK

-Also any recommendations where I should be looking to buy these parts/potential builds?

This is my current build. What should i upgrade first. Do I buy more memory, faster memory, better grathics card or something else first? It would be nice if I could get a recommeded order for the upgrades.

Anyone buy a qualifying GPU and receive a Monster Hunter World code?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 12:16 PM PDT

Edit: Forgot to mention from Newegg. They sent me my codes for RE3 and Xbox pass before my card shipped btw.

I didn't see it in the cart like RE3 and the Xbox Pass so I assumed the promo is over, but it's still advertised on their website so I was just wondering if they will honor it?

PC not booting, or doing anything at all when trying to turn on

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 12:06 PM PDT

So my brothers PC has stopped working.

He was doing some gaming on it when it suddenly shut down on him. It then wouldn't start back up properly, making the attached keyboard RGB just flash like mad instead.

The PSU doesn't kick into life at all and no POST LED's on the Motherboard light up.

I've taken the PSU out and done the paper clip test to prove the unit, and it does power up when disconnected from the PC.

Would this be pointing to the motherboard failing? It's an MSI B450 Gaming Plus. The PSU is a Fractal Design Essence (500W)

TLDR: Is the motherboard busted? Or is it possibly the PSU when placed under load?

Friend is upgrading his PC (CPU and MOBO) and the new mobo has an error light on the EZ Debug CPU light. It won't post and we aren't sure why it won't. More info below.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 01:32 PM PDT

MOBO: MSI MPG x570 Carbon Pro Wifi

    CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

    Old CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

PSU: Corsair RM750 (750W) (current usage should be around 434W)

    MOBO Manual Link

At first I thought the MOBO needed a BIOS update and didn't support the new one (out of box). So we tried the old CPU and nothing happened. The CPU is powered with CPU Power 1 Cable (4x2) and not the CPU Power 2 (it shouldn't need that). All the components are in. Including all 4 storage units (3 HDD, 1 SSD with Windows 10). MOBO, GPU, are powered on and the case fans turn on (plugged into PSU). Nothing is displayed on the monitor and the monitor doesn't recognize anything is plugged in.

    Problem Running Games

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 01:00 PM PDT

Okay so recently I've run into the problem where I play my normal games at a smooth 60+FPS, and after about 20-30 minutes of playtime it drops significantly. Coming with that, it has little audio spikes that match the games audio. Basically it sounds like as if someone were to just keep plugging and unplugging their mic over and over. I honestly have no idea how to fix this issue. At times just on the desktop page, even the mouse isn't precise and will begin to "lag" and start to become inaccurate and choppy. Would greatly appreciate the help. Specs: CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six Core RAM: 8 gb GPU: Radeon RX 580 Series

If you're on the fence about building a PC, do it NOW

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 05:14 PM PDT

Like the title says, if you've been thinking about building a PC but aren't sure if you should go for it or not, now is the time to do it.

Because of the coronavirus, slowly but surely prices are going to increase on everything from gpu's to cpu's to ram. It's already happening now, and soon it's gonna reach a point where everything is so much more expensive.

This is because it's reaching a point where people aren't making any more parts right now, and we have less people to ship them. So sooner rather than later, prices are just gonna be terrible.

All I'm saying is if you're thinking about that new GPU upgrade, or thinking about building a PC from scratch, do it now, or you may have to wait a long time before prices go back to normal.

Newb here. Trying to buy/build first time PC for L4D2, budget is $700, any advice/suggestions?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 10:42 AM PDT

Hi everyone, looking to purchase my first PC. I intended use use it mainly for playing left 4 dead 2. I have a friend that knows how to build PCs but I have never done that. My budget is around $700. My friend gave me a list of items for a pc build to purchase to build one myself, but I don't know if I should risk it since I have never built a pc. Here is the list he gave me: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/g36wHB

Since I intend to run left 4 dead 2, a game released about ten years ago, should I risk building my pc myself or is it fairly simple? Or does anyone have any suggestions for a pc that is already good to go without having to build anything in my price range? I just want to be able to run L4D2 on high settings.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, there are so many different options and I really don't know anything about computers for gaming.

CPU cooler suggestions for mATX build? Thermal take H18tg case

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 12:48 PM PDT

I'm thinking about upgrading my stock wraith spire for Ryzen 5 2600x to a quieter/better cooler. The options are slim for my thermaltake h18 case. It would have to be under 159mm (not including mobo). Trying to avoid AIO

Anyone have a suggestion on a cooler with rgb/led? Hoping to find one that's not too snug

Please critique my current build (completely new at this)

    Posted: 21 Apr 2020 08:59 AM PDT

I made a post yesterday with my brothers build and it was critiqued by a few people and I've adjusted it since then. I was hoping now with it changed a little bit if you guys could give me a second round of opinions.

As before I'm looking for a gaming PC within the thousand-dollar budget range that can play 60fps games at 1080p very easily. Games like subnautica Stellaris Fallout Elder Scrolls and some Call of Duty games.

Any and all suggestions and opinions are welcome still figuring this out.
