    Simple Questions - April 16, 2020

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

For GTX1060 users, now is a good time to replace your thermal paste. Just dropped my overclocked gpu 10c while under a identical load.

    First Build!

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 11:47 AM PDT

    Build pic

I wanted to support AMD with this build but couldn't justify the personal suffering due to my Gigabyte 5600 XT (performance bios bricked GPU, hours of driver combinations / new cables / , random crashes etc). I will consider AMD GPUs in future if this driver issue can be fixed. Plz allow me to alt-tab with my $1000 computer! Is that a crime?

So welcome to the family RTX 2060 KO Ultra. Plug n play first try!

I understand that this isn't the "optimal" time to buy a new GPU, but please don't ruin my moment ;).

    Ryzen 9 Tons of issues

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 07:54 PM PDT

Ryzen 9 3900 with stock cooler

    Asus Tuf Gaming x570 (WiFi)

    G.skill Ripjaws 32g 3200mhz

MSI GeForce 1070 (From my old computer)

    Crucial NVMe Drive

    650W PSU

    Various other storage hard drives.

    Info;

I'm getting awful FPS/Lag and Drops in pretty much every game I try. Bannerlord, Destiny 2, Counterstrike, Rimworld!? So many more! I had an older Intel system from 2012 and decided to walk over to the AMD side. The amount of headaches I've been having just getting everything to work has been frustrating. I've ironed out a lot of the problems but I am stumped now. If I cant get this to work this week, I am returning the CPU/MoBo to MicroCenter for an Intel. I was wondering if anyone could point me to some info that could potentially fix my issues?

What I've Tried; Latest BIOS. Latest Chipset. Latest Nvidia Driver. Fresh install of Windows. Up to date Windows. All drivers are installed. Posting CPU temps under 50c consistently even when in game or in any program. Idle temps are under 40c. Messed with all Windows power setting including the AMD profiles. Turned off pretty much all onboard peripherals besides ethernet since this MoBo has some past issues with Bluetooth/WiFi. Everything looks good in CPU-Z.

I decided on the 3900x because I do a lot of CPU intensive work in audio and in some engineering programs like Eagle or Spice. I also Game heavily. Seemed like the best of both worlds.

    *edit

I need to add that I am 2k gaming. When I go down to 1080p I get better performance, but the stuttering/ spikes are still there.

    *2nd edit

I am getting a bit overwhelmed trying to keep up with the amount of responses I am getting. I need to sit down and try a bunch of these suggestions. I just wanted to give a big thank you to everyone for the quick response. I was expecting maybe 2 people to chime in. Going to report in a bit later with my findings after I do some troubleshooting!

Beware of Corsair MP510b NVME SSD

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 12:41 AM PDT

So I was trying to buy nvme drive to upgrade my friends notebook and It seems Corsair silently introduce lower performing nvme drive and calling it MP510b rather than introducing as a completely different naming scheme.

They will most likely phase out the original much superior MP510 and replace with this inferior model.

Main difference between original MP510 and MP510b is,

Poor write endurance (800TBW Vs 360TBW) Random read IOPS rating. (360K IOPS Vs 120K IOPS)

I'm sure if asked, Corsair will say they changed the name but my main issue is most people will not notice this "B" at the end of MP510 and think it's the same well reviewed drive. I know lot of people who just read review or two and make their buying decisions and never bothered to do any actual testing themselves.

Even I didn't initially noticed this naming difference and only reason I even bothered to look at it is curiosity to know why they list same item in 2 different prices.

    Now that I've built it...

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 11:16 AM PDT

All I want to do is tinker with it more than actually use it. I want to build another one with a different case. Different coolers rather than the stock one. Mess with RGB just for the fun of it. So all my searches just seem to be computer builds and scavenging for parts.

How easy is it really to build a PC?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 01:29 AM PDT

I am really debating as an extreme beginner to building, whether or not to buy a custom built pc or to build it myself. Convince me please.

Should I buy the Ryzen 7 3600X or the 3700X?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 02:22 PM PDT

Not only for gaming but I will use unreal engine and I'm entering for a computer science degree and I want the PC to last for at least 5 to 6 years, so is it worth it to buy the 3700X.

Unable to game during these difficult times...

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 01:44 PM PDT

I bought a PC on Craigslist and it crashes... a lot. Whenever I try playing Rust on it, it almostly instantly shuts off/crashes as soon as the game loads and I start playing. By crash I mean the monitor goes black and a CPU light turns on on the motherboard. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I've always tried doing a clean install of windows 10 and all drivers are up to date. No luck.

    Building my first sff PC.

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 01:36 PM PDT

I already have storage, motherboard (ASRock b350 fatality), processor (ryzen 5 2600x). I really want to do a sff build. Was wondering if the price of the nzxt H1 it's worth it or not. I also have not decided on a GPU yet. I was actually starting to think that I used 1070 TI would be sufficient for now. I have a 27-in 1080p 144 hz display that I do not plan on upgrading anytime soon. So a GPU powerful enough for 1440P I just don't think is necessary. But any and all help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm still pretty new to all this.

How shall I test a used pc to see if everythings working?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 01:22 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'm buying a used gaming pc, I'll be collecting it from his place and he said I can test it out for a bit and see if everythings working. Not sure how long he wouldn't mind me staying for, so how can I quickly check to see if the specs are as listed and if everything will run fine? I'm new to to pc gaming so I dont know how to check system specs in windows 10, however I do know exactly what specs I'm looking for. Thanks

Suggest me a gaming build between $500-$600

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 06:09 AM PDT

I am not sure where to start exactly. I want a gaming pc that will be able to run Warzone, Csgo, pubg. I will also be using it for web development but nothing major as I am still in the learning stages. I would like it to have a WiFi option but it is not essential and plan on getting a wired connection once I move out of my apartment(currently using a hotspot, which can also be wired anyways). I found this on another post but would like suggestions and changes that would fit my needs better. Thanks !

EDIT I updated my list with your recommendations, unfortunately of part picker doesn't show a AF variant of the Ryzen 5 1600 so I manually added the price accordingly. I also changed the gpu to a GTX 1650 Super. And added a more reputable SSD. As well as a different motherboard. I think this is what I'm going to go with. It's ~20 over my budget but I can make it work. Let me know what you guys think!

Computer shuts down when playing games, very inconsistently. How to narrow down the cause?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 12:59 PM PDT

Recently I built my own PC. Now, I am running into a weird issue with it.

Whenever I am playing a game (Borderlands 3 and Battlefield 5 to name a few) my PC will occasionally restart mid-game. This does not happen consistently. Sometimes I can play and have no issues, sometimes it will restart: shut down and then power back up. This issue does not occur anywhere else, only when playing games.

Another thing of note is: once the PC restarts, it will not do it again before you restart it or turn it off.

I can't figure out what is causing this issue. I have ran FurMark tests, Memtest and different system stress tests. None of them caused the issue to appear and none detect any system problem. I also see no errors in the system log.

Any ideas what might be causing this issue?

    Specs are:

    • CPU: Ryzen 3700X
    • GPU: Radeon RX5700 XT
    • MoBo: Gigabyte Aorus X570
    • Power: Corsair RM850x
    • RAM: 2x 8GB GSkill Trident
    • Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus
    • CPU cooler: be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4

    First Build - Need Advice!

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 02:58 PM PDT

My first build, per instructions, here are the questions:

    Budget: $1000 +/-

    Operating System: Windows 10

Needed Equipment: Build a tower with Bluetooth, Ethernet connection, DDR4 ram, 4 USB 3.0 minimum connects, sound card or cards, 6 monitor capacity, SSD (1TB min), will hookup my current Sata 1TB hard drive as slave. Any added suggestion appreciated. I already have LED HD (1920 x 1080) monitors, keyboard, mouse, ext.

Location: Northern Indiana (St. Joseph County)

Intended use: Video editing, possibly streaming 4-6 video's at a time. Have 200 meg download and 25 upload internet speeds.

    Questions:

    Do I need WiFi?

    Suggested speakers to use.

Can I run 3 sound cards (1 sound cart per two monitors) to different Bluetooth headphones? I have 2 to 3 grand-kids over that like to watch & listen to their shows while I'm working.

Hope I'm not missing anything, suggestions on improvement welcome.

I appreciate your time and thank you in advance.

PC Upgrade for max settings on Star Wars Battlefront 2

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 12:28 PM PDT

    Hi Guys

My goal is basically one: be able to play SW Battlefront 2 on max settings running smoothly.

My PC currently has the following specs:

    intel Core i5-6500 3.20GHz

    16GB RAM

    NVIDIA GTX 970 4GB GDDR5

With this PC I can play it on medium settings without frame drops.

It is worth to for example upgrade the CPU, graphics card or both, to accomplish this?

Or just build a new PC?

    Thank you very much :)
