    Simple Questions - April 14, 2020

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 05:10 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

My PC is dead quiet except for my RX 590 video card -- is there anyway to make it quieter?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 04:56 AM PDT

I built a PC (NZXT h550 case with two Corsair fans, i7-8700 with Be Quiet! CPU cooler, 16GB RAM, M.2 SSD, Corsair TX750M PSU).

It was dead quiet. I literally could not hear it running.

Then I added a Gigabyte RX 590 video card, and the video card makes a regularly soft but audible fan noise during desktop use, and when I start PUBG the fan goes into loud full blowing noise mode.

Is there anything that can be done to make the video card quiet? Or are there other brands/models of video card that are known to be quieter that I should consider upgrading to?

    $1,200 Build

What will you be doing with this PC?< I'll be using it strictly for gaming, I play a lot of High FPS games and such. Some examples are COD (all of them), Minecraft, CS:GO, Goat Of Duty, GTFO, Brawlhalla, Executive Assault (1 &2), Garry's Mod, GTA V, and more. Some games are more demanding than others of course, my main goal is to have high FPS one games like COd, MC, GMod, GTA, and other similar Games.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?< $1,200

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.< I'll be buying it when the stimulus check deposits (I'm told April 15)

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc) I really only need the Tower, And a Monitor. The monitor doesn't have to be super super fancy. I already have a mouse and keyboard and I have a copy of Windows 10 OS. Tower needs to have Ethernet port!

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?<

Virginia, USA. I don't think so, Best Buy? As for putting the PC together I have people who can help me.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.<

I'll be using a Magic Eagle keyboard and Mouse as it was gifted to me and very nice. I have an old Phillips monitor (bought in 2013) I use as my second monitor to hold things like Discord on.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?<

I don't really know what overclocking is, i know it puts wear on your computer so imma say no.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)<

I'd prefer 32-64GB Of Ram, then I'd like a SSD (500GB or higher if possible but I'm flexible) and a 1TB HDD (HHD?)

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

I'd like Led Lighting and a window but I'm not super picky so I don't need those things, No particular color, Mid-Tower or Full-Tower. I don't really wanna use Intel processors, I'd like AMD if possible but I'll see what you guys choose.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?<

    Earlier I stated I had a copy of Windows 10 so I don't need it! :)

    Extra Statements:

I have the Money now, but I would like to wait for the check to buy

    Im so dumb..

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 11:45 PM PDT

So ive built my pc about a month back and for some reason I just noticed that task manager said 8Gb Free and I have 8x2Gb Sticks. So I popped off my side panel and moved my sticks to 1-3 rather than 2-4 which my manual said was right. And while switching those noticed one of my fans wasn't even plugged in. Not sure why I made this post just wanted to fell better and hear others fail story's.

Adjust the height of case fans for better airflow?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 05:57 AM PDT

    Hey,

I just bought the Fractal Meshify C but my question is probably valid for most cases.

I was wondering in what height I should put my input and output fans. Should they be level on the same height? From the factory the input fan is way lower than the output fan. And there is only one of each.

    Thanks

Upgrading my 5 year old PC

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 06:15 AM PDT

    Hey!

5 years ago I built my first and still used PC with the following hardware:

    • CPU: i5 - 4460
    • GPU: AMD Radeon R9 380
    • RAM: 8 GB
    • Mainboard: ASRock B85M Pro4
    • Power Adapter: Forgot it and I would have to open the entire PC now but I think it was a 450W one

Also a 250GB SSD + 1TB HDD all wrapped in a big coolermaster case

What do I do with it?

I code, I edit photos, I want play video games. I mostly play Overwatch which runs fine but recently started to play Warzone. Warzone runs pretty bad even on very low settings and I have to close everything else to have an at least decent experience. I also want to play other games but years ago I tried games like skyrim or witcher and didnt really enjoy playing them on all low settings (and sometimes still dont have a really smooth experience)

Now I have the opportunity to upgrade and I would love to do so. The biggest problem I see is that I cant really upgrade single parts because if I get a new CPU it wont fit onto the 1150 Socket Mainboard. Same with RAM. Of course if I buy compatible (older) parts it will work but I would guess that its a better idea to buy up to date hardware

So after a bit of research it seems like the best I can do is upgrade Mainboard + CPU + RAM all at once. Then I can also look at a new GPU. Does this make sense? What would you do with this computer in my situation knowing my intentions?

I have 500€ at the moment to work with thats why I thought about going Mainboard + CPU + RAM and then next month or so (with a new budget) look for a GPU. Since I doubt to get a good upgrade for this PC for under 500€, right?

I would be really happy about an advice on where to start, how to upgrade and maybe even specific suggestions on which CPU, which Mainboard, which GPU.. Im still somewhat lost at the moment

Pc wont power on, nothing spins and no lights at all

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 04:25 AM PDT

I did the paper clip test on my 1life 700w psu and it worked.

CPU: ryzen 3200g Motherboard: b450 pro vdh max

Ive tried to start with 1 ram stick only, jumpstart the thing but no lights all.

Its also worth mentioning that i tested the psu on a OLDER computer and it worked.

First build is complete! Plays 1440p beautifully, but have some questions on CPU temperatures

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 02:28 PM PDT

First off, thanks for all the help this subreddit has given me. Really helped me sort out what final components to get for my first build with a $1500 budget. Just finished putting the last of it together and installing windows/drivers/games. It not only looks awesome IMO, but performs really well at 1440P from the hour or so I've gamed with it.

I do have a question on my 3700x CPU temperatures though. it seems to run at around 55-60c no matter if I have the H115i pump/fans at full tilt or just at balanced, or even quiet settings. This seems a lot hotter than I've seen on some of the cooler reviews. My AIO water temps show around ambient temps, which makes me think I may need to reapply thermal paste? I just used the stock paste that comes pre-installed on the H115i. I also smeared a touch (toothpick pointed end size) of pasted on the CPU while fighting to get the bracket hooked up. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but I really want to be sure it's good to go and not have to watch the temps like a hawk.

Anyway, here's my full build with a few peripherals and components I had already:

High School Student Looking to Build my First PC

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 12:40 PM PDT

Hello all, I have been a PC gamer for the past 2 years gaming on quite a lame, pre-built computer that was about 400$. I've noticed the games aren't running as they used to, and I decided that I'm going to build a PC, as it could be fun. A buddy of mine knows about that kind of thing so I asked him for a build withing my budget. This is the list of parts he put together and I was looking for some feedback on things that could potentially reduce the price or alternatives. Thanks!

I just bought a new cpu (ryzen 7 3700x) and am looking at motherboards. I keep seeing that the Asus x470-f gaming mobo may need a bios update before it can even recognize the new cpu. Is that something to worry about or should a new board at this time already have the update?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 09:27 AM PDT

I get this message on pc part picker:

Some AMD X470 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions

Edit: Got some great information and learned a ton from you guys. Thanks for all the help!

    Worth the upgrade?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 01:55 PM PDT

I'm debating upgrading my almost 9 year old CPU as well as ram. I currently have a 3960x and 32 gigs 1600 mhz ddr3. I'm looking at a 9900k and 32gb of 3600mhz ddr4. I have a 2080 super and I know I am bottlenecking it I just don't know how much so. I have read some people claim 10+ fps gains just going from 2600mhz ram to 3600 mhz alone, let alone a 9 year newer CPU. Am I going to see a decent gaming performance difference with an upgrade like this? Only reason I am thinking of upgrading is I have a 144hz 1ms freesync monitor that is dipping down into the 50-60 fps range at times in certain games. I do some CAD work time to time and stream time to time which is why I decided to go with the 9900k as opposed to the 9700k. I'm just on the fence if this 1k upgrade will be worth it in the end.

mATX vs ATX Computer for the wife

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 01:13 PM PDT

So I decided to build my wife a new pc using the 1600 AF. Currently she is using my old 6600k but I want to give that to our daughter. My old PC has a full size tower and it takes up a lot of space under my wifes desk (No room for it on top)

I have 2 questions without going into a crazy form factor case what would be a good budget mesh case (She is so iffy on side panels, she loves mine but seeing computer parts freaks her out.) 2 What would be a good motherboard. I dont think that over clocking will ever be a thing (unless I just mess around with something small).

Needs tips on this full-AMD gaming build for 1440p 144hz

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 03:12 PM PDT

I was going to move to Portugal for college today, 14th of April, but my flight got delayed to July 9th, so now I've gotta wait a bit more to buy this rig.

I've been searching for months about computer building, posting on some forums, and now I think I have the best setup I can currently buy for a few years.

Portugal has only a few options for components, and importing from other countries is off the charts since taxes are too high.

I want this setup to last for atleast 5~7 years, since I'm not too much onto the newest AAA games that release every year, so I don't think I should waste with ray-tracing or better components to be future-proof, once I think this setup isn't enough anymore, I'll buy an entire new one.

Since PCpartpicker doesn't have the site I'm buying on, I've manually placed the prices from the site.

Shipping is free for all components, and taxes are arleady applied, I know a thing or two about mounting the rig, but I think it's more worth to pay 36.9 more Euro for the mounting service they offer.

The site I've been looking at is https://www.pcdiga.com/

If anyone has any recommendations, tips or tricks, please post them below, I'd be very thankful.

    • Like I've commented earlier, some of the parts I've selected aren't on PCPartPicker, the case is the ATX Nox Infinity Atom RGB for 39.9 Euros and I've also choose 5x 120mm Noctua 1700RPM NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM Fans, and since B450 Tomahawk Max only seems to have 4 fan connectors, I'm also buying Noctua's NA-SYC1 4-Pin Y Fan adapter.

Thanks for help! Built my first PC!

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 05:52 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Wanted to show off my build after successfully building my first PC. Had been watching tech videos and forums like this for years, and finally decided a few months ago to make the attempt. Took a lot of advice here on what parts are reviewed well and what performance to expect, and after using this system for a month I am more than happy with it! Will hope to tinker with overclocking and other settings down the line, but right now it performs great as is.

Will say for anyone that hasn't tried before, it is much easier than it looks even if you don't have any real expertise in hardware/software. I took forever assembling thinking the motherboard and every single pin would snap if I looked at it wrong, but most really aren't that brittle. My board at least it was very obvious and labeled where each cable was supposed to go. So many build guide videos out there too if you get stuck. Could get it done twice as fast now if I had another chance.

[$1200-1400] Building a new PC - parts sanity check

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 01:21 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

So I decided to get a new PC after 7 years, and let me start off by saying I'm not clueless when it comes to PC building, but I'm not a veteran either. So I would love to hear your input about the build, if I missed something, or if you think that the build might have some issues once put together.
A heads up for everyone, I'm from EU (Croatia to be specific), so prices may vary, I'll add the prices in dollars so you can gauge how our prices differentiate.

I will be using the PC for gaming and software/game development mostly, however, I may also do some image and video processing. The computer will be running Windows 10.
    I already have all the necessary peripherals (1080p 144Hz monitor + 1080p 75Hz monitor)

I wasn't thinking of overclocking currently, so I didn't include any CPU coolers, as the Ryzen stock one should be enough. If I ever consider overclocking, I will be looking to get a proper CPU cooler.
Talking about cooling, one of my concerns is that I should probably get at least one more case fan, as the case comes with only 2 mounted on the front of the case, should I maybe include one at the back? Airflow is my biggest concern, as I have little experience with that part.

Here are the components I picked, with the budget being around $1200-1400:

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor BOX ($220)

    Motherboard - MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard($140)

    First time PC building!

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 03:00 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I intend on building a budget pc as i am a poor college student, and I need some help. I plan on using my boyfriend's used gtx 970 with an Intel i7 7700k processor and I need a motherboard. The max I am willing to spend is $180, but obviously the cheaper, the better (but I still want quality). Please help! If the motherboard is capable of upgrading that is also a plus.

p.s. psu reccommendations are also welcome

Advice needed on a gpu for first build

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 02:59 PM PDT

Hey guys, first post here. So I'm building my first gaming pc, and need some advice. I'm using bitwits build from his "why most pre builts suck" video.

I've created a pc partpicker mock up of his build. Build Now not everything is the same but its as close as I could get it.

Is there a comparable gpu i can use instead of the rtx2060 sc gaming, for around 300$? Preferably through amazon. Any other tips you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

First custom build. Any advice or flaws that anyone sees would be greatly appreciated before I spend 2,000$ on a new build.

I've had a pc before so I have a generalized knowledge of what I need and what does what but my first one was a prebuilt. I bought it from Ibuypower and I picked the specs etc from the choices they gave me. I've decided I want to give building my own a shot and I'm hoping I enjoy the challenge and project it gives me. Here's the link to my amazon list of all the parts I'm planning on buying. (Ignore the work boots, it's just a for future reference list and to keep track of what I want) pc parts list.

How bad did i screw up?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 02:53 PM PDT

I just built a pc and bought two 8gb Corsair Vengeance RAM 3000mhz. After browsing reddit, i saw that everyone recommended AT LEAST 3200mhz if not 4000.

How bad did i screw up? Also, what's the main difference? (I'm not too good at this)
