    Simple Questions - April 12, 2020

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    r/buildapc celebrates 10 years!

    Hello everyone!

10 years ago our esteemed founder u/LieutenantClone first broke ground on /r/buildapc.

At that time, AMD's Phenom II lineup was up against Intel's first ever i series processors; fast forward to today and it's Ryzen 3rd generation vs Intel i series 9th generation. Back then, cases still had 5.25" drive bays, side intakes, and partial acrylic side panels. 120hz panels weren't mainstream - let alone 144hz - and SSDs were unaffordable for the average user.

Over the course of the past 10 years, trends in PC building have constantly changed and evolved, and the more than 2 million posts submitted to the subreddit are testament to this. During that time, AIOs have gone in and out of fashion, SSDs slowly became mainstream, high refresh monitors are now a must have, RGB mania has spread to every component, and making sure the insides of your PC are just as pretty as the outside have never mattered more (seen through tempered glass, obviously).

Trends change, but the spirit of the subreddit remains the same. There are few communities as altruistic and help-oriented as ours, and I don't think anyone imagined the subreddit would reach 2 million subscribers when it was launched 10 years ago.

Speaking of subscriber count, check out these milestones in /r/buildapc history:

And of course, our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in our 2 million subscriber giveaway - if you were lucky enough to win, please bear with our partners as they work to get your prizes sent out!

Join us tomorrow at 12pm EST as the modteam hosts a casual livestream at twitch.tv/buildapc, where we'll be talking 10 years, 2 million subscribers and what's next for /r/buildapc.

I have a website that can automatically build or upgrade your computer and look for feedback

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:23 AM PDT

So I have made a website https://envybits.com/ that can build or upgrade computers automatically, with some help of machine learning, lots of data entry and quite a lot of coding and debugging.

Now, I know it's not yet optimal so I would like to see if you can beat it and what improvements/changes would you suggest (essentially, check how it performs at different budgets and build types). Eg. if it recommends a really bad CPU/GPU combo in a given budget, puts too little RAM etc. From my own tests it seems to be doing fine in most situations and can help out people new to it but would like it to be checked by you guys too. In particular "upgrading old computers" (also known as Upgrade Planner) is really hard to check by just myself.

(Note - US prices are up to date, rest of the world is unfortunately a bit out of date so I would refrain from using them too much).

Some of you might remember me from last time - since then a lot of things have changed (for the better I hope!) and new features have shown up - mobile friendly UI, Game Planner aimed for people who want to play a specific title but don't actually know what kind of computer will run it so they don't know how much they should spend and hopefully better treatment of microATX/miniITX builds.

I built a computer case out of Lego! Took approximately 200 hours and 3500 pieces to build.

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:38 PM PDT

tl;dr: I built a hexagonal case out of Lego, has 3500 pieces, 32L, decent thermals. Super proud of it, wanted to share it :)

I've always been fascinated by hexagonal designs on stuff, and decided to rebuild my current Lego computer case into a full hexagonal shape. Took me about 3500 pieces and 200 hours, and I finally finished it!

And of course, it was made out of 100% Lego - no adhesives, glue, or any non-Lego parts.

    Pics:

    Lego Computer

The hardware is same as my old build so I won't post it here (see my older post).

Case is 32L, which I think is very compact for a ATX case.

Thermals are 65-72 Celsius while under max stress (Prime95), and GPU at 72-81 Celsius (3DMark). While gaming the GPU never exceeds 60C. I have three 120mm fans at the bottom pulling air into the case, and a 200mm fan at the top pulling the exhaust out.

Cost of all parts are around $400, I don't have a proper estimate as I built it from dismantling my previous case, and that already didn't have a proper estimate since I bought a lot of pieces in bulk and had a lot left over.

I've been planning this build for a while, mostly as an improvement over my old build. There's three main gripes about my old build that I wanted to improve upon:

    • Having a vertically aligned (I/Os facing down) case means I have to lift up my PC every time I needed to plug things in.
    • Having everything built in one piece and encasing the motherboard means I have to dismantle parts of the computer to access the hardware if I want to replace anything.
    • It's huge. It was about 44L. I've been very into sffpcs for a while, and while I have an ATX board, I wanted to see how small I can make it while keeping decent thermals and sticking to a hexagonal build (because rectangular is boring).

Now there's a door that swings open for me to swap parts, and certain panels on the case can also be removed to access the SATA/other ports.

    Here's my build process

Edit: Made the thermals portion more visible since most of the comments were asking about it, and adding how much it costs (a lot) :(

    Ditched Macbook, built Gaming PC!

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 06:20 AM PDT

My first build after years with only a Macbook Air. Building process went surprisingly smooth with no surprises. Really happy with the performance! Playing Doom (2016), Control, ... on max settings.

    Pics here

The stock fan on the Ryzen 3600x is pretty loud though... I plan on replacing it in the near future. Any suggestions? Some black/white cable extensions should be nice as well :-)

    Thanks!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

NOTE that I've included the MSI MPG Z390 in my parts list as that is the NEW motherboard that I'm working with at the moment that's giving me issues. The previous motherboard that I was using at the time the spill occurred was a GIGABYTE B360 AORUS Gaming 3 WiFi

First time posting here, so I hope that formatting is okay! Here's what happened:

I spilled a cup of coffee onto the top of my PC tower. UGH. Thankfully, I think the dust trap on top caught most of the liquid and it mainly pooled on top of the graphics card. The computer shut off right away. I, in a panic, accidentally wiped things down with a dish towel, although I've heard that in 2020 damage through static isn't likely to have happened/fried my motherboard. I didn't hear any audible sounds that would indicate that static damage had occurred, and again, I was mainly wiping the graphics card as that's where the majority of the liquid was.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I set the graphics card out to dry for a day, and then re-seated it and tried to boot up my PC. Nothing but the RAM lit up. Fans didn't spin. I assumed the board was fried, possibly mistakenly.

I bought a new motherboard, the MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC. I rebuilt my PC, made sure everything was properly connected, and powered things on. Components lit up, fans began to spin, but the CPU debug light came on and my monitor didn't display anything. The PC didn't POST. My motherboard also doesn't beep (not sure if that's just the board itself or something I've done wrong).

I double checked connections and everything seems to be properly connected. I reseated the CPU twice and checked for bent pins. The issue persists. I tried booting without the graphics card installed, still nothing. I tried booting with 1 stick of RAM, still nothing. I've inspected the PSU and it seems to be working, but I could be wrong? As far as I know, no liquid came in contact with the PSU. Today I took the plate off of my graphics card and noticed that it was still wet inside, so I've left it to dry again and will clean it with rubbing alcohol. In the meantime, just out of curiosity, I installed a spare GTX 960 just to see if it would do anything, but it didn't.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

At the moment, I don't have another PC to test individual components on, and I'm just generally feeling pretty down about how this entire thing even happened. It's feeling really frustrating to try and identify the problem. I can't tell if I messed up in buying a new motherboard, or if I messed up in starting up my PC again too soon and possibly fried something. I've heard it's pretty hard to fry a CPU, so I don't know if that could really be the case. It's important to note that PC Part Picker says that my PSU doesn't have the required 8-pin PCI power connector, but this isn't true. I've read some accounts of other people with the same MSI motherboard having issues with the CPU debug light, saying that their board was defective, which I REALLY hope is not the case. Anyway, any help would seriously be appreciated, and please be gentle! Let me know if I can provide any more info on my end, and thank you so, so much.

PC does not power on, please help

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 08:45 AM PDT

    Here's a list of my parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/getmoneymyrick/saved/cQrwzy

Testing my parts and nothing happens when I turn the power on.

    More information:

I live in the US and ordered the PSU off ebay in new condition. Everything was sealed but it included a European 2 prong cord instead of an american 3 prong cord. I asked a few people and did a few searches and it sounded like I was fine to swap the power cable, so I used my own 3 prong cord. Back of the PSU says 100-240Vac 50-60hz and I figured it can detect the right power. Because I was concerned about if it would work I bridged pins 4 and 5 with a paperclip and my fan did power on (slowly, but I figured that's just a be quiet feature to keep the fan quiet).

Because of my concern I installed everything on my table first to make sure it works. Installed CPU, heatstink, plugged in heatsink, put ram in slots A2 and B2, attached 24pin and 8pin power cables to the motherboard. I put a NVME M.2 drive in and screwed it down. I put my GPU in the first PCIe slot and put in the 8 power cord. Then I plugged in my mouse and keyboard and monitor to the HDMI port, powered it on, and nothing happened.

Worth noting as well before all of this I plugged my PSU in to my motherboard (those were the only two things), turned on the PSU and nothing happened. I thought there would be green LEDs or something but since there was nothing I figured I had to install other components for the motherboard to do anything.

If you have any thoughts please let me know. I can include pictures but didn't know what would be helpful as I believe I did everything.

Edit: Problem solved. Thank you u/Deltapeak! I did not know I had to jump the power switch on the mobo. Thanks to everyone that helped me through this. I definitely though I was good just turned on the PSU.

Westinghouse WWII Vintage PC Case Mod

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 01:14 PM PDT

    Q U A R A N T I N E is a fairly strong impetus to dosome hobbies, yes?

Story: I found this old aluminum radio case stripped of its vacuum tubes in a certain *Surplus Tools & Commodities* warehouse sale. It was very dirty, and one side of the screen paneling was so gnarly I just had to throw it out.

Pictures of the "case" when I first got it 8 years ago:

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/qZ7zGv5it3zavpzi6

The guts. Hopefully you can see why not all the knobs are in the final product; the are often tall stacked mechanisms, or just weirdly shaped. Once a real PC was in the case they could not all be re-installed.

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/3o62DUCzbaaZwaAL6

The case is very tall and narrow, so I couldn't quite go with a large ATX board, and not all video cards would fit. I also had to deal with the fact I didn't have a clear place to put the hard drives, at least not right away.

An early iteration using a recycled Dell inspiron or other, nicknamed "Xanadu":

    https://photos.app.goo.gl/x7x7hLr8ZCMAdpzL7

The hard drives were up on top using these cool sliders. Sadly, the back screen would have to come off to install/manipulate the hard drives.

The width of the case was such that with a little bit(!) of dremeling everything fit nicely. The original "case" had a series of trays for the radio electonics, and the "spines" that the motherboard tray is attached to were just excellent for my needs.

Another picture of the in-progress case, very nearly done, next to the most delicate RepRap heat hood ever designed:

Finally, pictures of the completed case and machine:

First PC build. Ryzen 5 3600 vs 3600x

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 04:54 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I'm about to start ordering parts for my first PC build ever. I have gotten really interested and watch tons of videos on PC building. I'm going to go with a ryzen cpu due to their cost versus performance. I'm wondering is a Ryzen 5 3600x worth the extra $25? Also having trouble picking a graphics card to go along with it. I was going to go with a 1660 ti but it's fairly pricey. Is there a Radeon card that would be comparable but maybe a bit cheaper? I've heard there are some driver issues with them so I'm weary.

Thank you very much! Super excited to build this beauty!

    Help With My 1st Build

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 01:07 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/c7VKx6

There is a link to my build.

I have a few questions regarding a 450 vs 570 motherboards and how PCle 4 works into that mix and if it's something I need.

I also am debating between the AMD 3700X VS 3900X it seems that the 3700X will work fine, but I just wanted some outside opinion. Also is the 2 more cores worth the 3700 over the 3600?

One thing I wanted some clarification on was for ram def going for 32 GB, but I wanted to know if there is a noticeable difference between having 16X2 or 8X4?

And lastly, for the Video Card, I like the Nvidia 2070 Super, but I kept reading in Toms Hardware that Nvidia's Ampere 7nm GPUs are coming? Should I buy a cheaper GPU now and wait for that or is that something that's 2 or 3 years out?

When to upgrade CPU - Intel 6700K

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:05 AM PDT

I've been looking at the possibility of rebuilding my computer around a mini-ITX platform. After a bit of investigation most of my hardware will transfer over into a NZXT H210, but I'm torn around what to do with my CPU. I can't justify investing (or trying to find) a 2011 1151 socket ITX board, but the chip is still serving me well.

How regularly do you fine people tend to upgrade your CPUs? Unsure if I should just bit the bullet and transfer CPU / board to a HTPC and get situated with new and shiny.

Hey guys, so I purchased this laptop for 120$! thought it would be a steal since the guy said it didn't work and lights turned on so i suspected bad ram. Boy was I wrong! I opened up the laptop to check it out and I was immediately hit with the worst looking corrosion i had ever seen on a laptop. IM guessing pepsi was the culprit but anyways i cleaned it up and it posted! but only once, after it would just start flashing the battery icon since the battery was gone. i would have to clean it again with alcohol and it would turn on!? every time i would want to turn in on i would need to wipe the effected area with alcohol, Weird right? i was looking for any potential answers to this. im guessing the alcohol creates a temp short that starts it up but i dunno. Any help would be appreciated!

    First gaming PC challenge

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 09:19 AM PDT

So I'm looking at making my first ever pc because, let's be real, I'm not going anywhere and I've been putting it off for a long time because I don't know what I need or what I should get. So that's why I'm here

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

Lots of gaming. VR for sure and games like COD and Witcher if that's possible

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

    £1,200

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

    ASAP

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

Everything except for mouse and keyboard

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

    UK

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

    None

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

Ideally but not necessary if it's better without

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

Turns on, plays games, doesn't blow up

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

None, make it as ugly as you like, as long as it's good value for money

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

I have a laptop with windows 10 but no install copy

Extra info or particulars: Please be patient, I'm not experienced in this as you can probably tell

Is there a point to build a PC now?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:49 AM PDT

I've been wanting to build a PC for the past three years now but never had enough money, I've been saving up and now have enough for a £600 PC. Should I buy the parts now or should I wait until the new console generation starts to buy parts?

    Critique my build!

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 01:56 PM PDT

I'm putting together my first PC build, and think I finally have the right gear picked out! I'm looking to run a 1440p/144Hz monitor primary and a 1080p/60Hz monitor secondary, for gaming use. I'm looking to buy now, and have a good performing PC that I don't have to upgrade for 2-3 years. I'm not crazy about graphics or framerate, my emphasis is smooth as butter performance. Parts list here, and described below: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Qp2sPn

GPU: Radeon RX 5700 XT Sapphire Nitro+

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X

    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB

Hard drives: OS: ADATA SX6000 LITE (256GB NVDE SSD)

    Gaming: Crucial MX500 2TB (SSD)

Media: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2TB (HDD)

Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 GAMING PLUS

    PSU: Corsair RM Series RM750

Case: Lian Li Lancool II (White)

I'd love r/buildapc's feedback before I press "go" on purchasing the items. Once they're bought and on their way I'll go ahead and shop for externals (possible wifi card/mouse/keyboard/speakers/table/chair) and get a proper battlestation for the first time ever. Thank you one and all, the sidebar of this community is what got me started!

I'm trying to come up with an upgrade to my 6 year old desktop. I'm trying to keep the budget under $700, any suggestions? I've been hardcore debating about whether I want the RX 590 card or a 1660ti. I'll also be taking the hard drive out of my original desktop to put into this one.

Advice on a budget(?) gaming build? Where can I shave/add money to get the most value. Keyword: value.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 11:41 AM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? Gaming at 1080p. No photo/video editing.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? 1080P. Doubtful I'll get into 4K within the next few years as I don't see it becoming really that affordable with the price of 4K monitors. I will say that I'm not too well versed in what freesync and gsync are, as well as the differences between the two. Looking to play AAA titles at 1080P with at the very, very least, 60 FPS. AT THE VERY LEAST.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Anywhere from $800 to $1200. This would not include OS, keyboard, mouse, or monitor. If I'm asking for too much or not enough, please be straight with me.

In what country are you purchasing your parts? USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KFffRk

Provide any additional details you wish below. I know USB-C headers (case) would be nice/convenient but I find it at this time to be unnecessary. It's a long story but dust tends to be a big issue with me which is why I went with a case with dust filters everywhere.

Upgraded my motherboard and CPU, now I'm getting told that my Windows isn't activated?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 09:53 AM PDT

This is my first time upgrading from a pre-built computer I got back in 2013, so I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but after the upgrade, my system is apparently not recognizing my Windows 10 as being legitimate anymore. Is this normal? I've tried getting into contact with support, but apparently all aspects of communication with Microsoft is being swamped right now so all I can deal with is a chat support bot who just tells me to use contact methods that aren't working because they're so busy. Do I really have to buy Windows 10 just because I upgraded my hardware?
