Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:51 AM PST There are many silly names and conventions in CS, but nothing grinds my gears like the stupid fucking RAID naming scheme. First of all, the names are utterly undescriptive. Like, what exactly is RAID 4 for example? Well the only piece of information you can pull out of that name is that it you're working with 2+ disks because, you know, RAID. That's it. Beyond that, you can't even begin to guess what it might be unless you already have an idea. It's just a stupid number that tells you nothing useful whatsoever. It doesn't even imply anything. Second, who the hell thought using the word "level" to refer to different RAID configs was a good idea? That word followed by numbers comes with the inevitable implication that the RAIDs follow a natural progression of sorts, which is absolutely not true at all. Is RAID 1 a logical step up from RAID 0? No it's not. They're completely different stuff with completely different performance goals. There is no reasonable line of progression where you go "one level above" RAID 0 and land at RAID 1. The relation does kinda exist for certain levels, like 4 and 5 for example, I'll give it that. And then there's the RAID xy configurations that not only require you to have prior knowledge as to what RAID x and RAID y are, but also they don't give much useful information about how it really works. Take RAID 10 and RAID 01. Which one is mirrored then striped, and which one is striped then mirrored? I know the answer. Though not because the name tells it to me, but because I had to look it up many times in the past and now I have it memorized. If you want to make your names look kewl and 1337, just call it RAID-S for "striped" instead of RAID 0 for example. RAID-DP for "distributed parity" instead of the shitty RAID 5 that means fuck all. Not perfect of course, but at least then the name actually has some descriptive power. WHY NUMBERS, MAN? TL;DR: Using an ascending numerical order to name shit when there's no natural logical order was a stupid fucking idea and whoever came up with it should be very ashamed of themselves. Can't come up with decent names so uses shitty numbers instead smh. I'm angry. edit: for more anger check out how ibanez name their guitars. After 11 years of owning my Ibanez I still have to take a moment to remember how it's called. Shit can get wild. [link] [comments]

Do I need to do anything when upgrading my CPU? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:31 AM PST I am changing my Ryzen 5 2600 for a 3600, is it as simple as removing it and putting in the 3600? Do I need to do anything specific, other than remove and replace? I have a current overclock on the 2600, do I need to remove that or reset settings? Same mobo, CPU is the only thing being changed. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:04 PM PST I havent seen anyone make a post about this yet so i wanted to do this. Linus already made a video talking about this, and JayzTwoCents just made a video about it today. The corona virus is affecting all of the PC manufacturing companies located in china. And we have already seen some increases in prices already. But they are only going to go higher. If you can wait until the new generations of video card and processor to come out, then i think its ok to wait. But if not, buy buy buy buy buy. I finally got my motherboard to post! Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:22 PM PST It took me 3 hours to find the problem: a bad RAM stick. It's my first time building a PC myself, so I'm proud of myself! I tried taking the motherboard back out of the case, I tried running it with only 1 RAM stick, and then I swapped the RAM stick, and it worked. Then, I tried running in dual-channel mode, and it didn't work, so I'm assuming that one RAM stick is bad. On the down side: I only have 4GB of RAM to work with now. Help buying the right amount of RAM Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:37 PM PST Firstly, my issue. I'm struggling to run multiple software at the same time, Discord/Rainbow six siege/Twitch/Streaming. I've asked around and believe this is down to having 8GB of RAM. I have decided to invest in some more RAM to boost my PC performance and hopefully find a remedy to my issues. Specs: Motherboard: MS-7A66 RAM - DDR4 - 2400(1200MHz) Kingston Graphics Card - GTX 1060 GB CPU - i5 7400 I've run CPU - Z and seen I have 4 available slots on my motherboard. I've researched online and found people having issues with their CPU cooler restricting their space. I haven't opened my PC before hand and it was a pre built PC. My questionsWill I have enough clearance to install 2 8GB sticks of RAM in addition to my first stick? Will RAM solve the issue? Am I just going about this all the wrong way? Edit: Thank all of you for your help, you really are great! Have a good week! [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:03 AM PST Hey guys, My computer is starting to have some thermal issues so I have decided the clean out the fan and heatsink alongside replacing the thermal paste. My only problem is that I don't have any isopropyl alcohol to remove the old, presumably dry thermal paste with. Is there anything else I can use to remove this? Thanks! Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:48 AM PST I'm wanting to potentially upgrade my monitors. I've had dell u2414h dual monitors for the last 5-6 years, and I just upgraded my build and would like to try to go to a larger screen and have a single monitor. Is there a good way to do this without breaking the bank? 4K isn't a necessary feature, but I'd like 1440 maybe? I doubt my gpu could run games at 4K with any significant settings honestly. Build is a r5 2600x with an rx580 sapphire nitro + 8gb. [link] [comments]
Custom pc wont boot properly after taking apart to reapply thermal paste to cpu and gpu Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:42 PM PST Hi, I just took my pc apart to clean it up a little bit and reapply thermal paste to the cpu and gpu and then put it all back together. Upon turning it on all the lights light up and the fans start spinning but then stop shortly after, and then start back up again, and then stop again, forever and ever and ever, never actually booting up. I was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is, thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:40 PM PST So I was wondering if there was a way to check what bios a motherboard has , or how to check when it was manufactured? My current motherboard is from ASUS Another one would be what if I put a newer cpu that is compatible with my motherboard but with a bios update ,into a motherboard that I'm not sure has had its bios updated? Or would it just not boot? [link] [comments]
Please help me improve my build. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:40 PM PST Hello, I'm trying to figure out what components I'm going to buy in 3 months, I'm the type of planning ahead guy. Could you please let me know if there is anything I can improve in my build? https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/TZNWmg [link] [comments]
EVGA N1 or Thermaltake TR2 for NAS Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:39 PM PST I'm building a NAS file server with multiple hard drives soon. I'm wondering which power supply to use. They're about the same price. Thanks for the answers and support! [link] [comments]

Ive gone through my build with friends but i need someone to pick it apart in case theres something im not noticing that might bite me in the rear later. If theres anything i can upgrade for a better performance please tell me i want to ace this thing :)

Final advice post before the trip to Microcenter tomorrow Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:23 AM PST My wife and I have each posted here and we've had a ton of great feedback. Thanks to everyone for the help so far! This build will be used quite often by us along with frequent family gatherings for VR sessions. I also plan to do 1440p gaming on it paired with the LG 27gl850. Any final advice or comments are much appreciated as this is our first build. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:19 AM PST Hi, (Im not buying a SSD, HDD and GPUnow , I have them from my old config, I'll upgrade later if necessary, also I'm not building this PC for heavy gaming, I just want a reliable, future proof build.) What I decided already: (change my mind) Case: First I wanted to go with the CoolerMaster Q500L but I read some bad reviews and watched a video where the guy said its an oven, so while searching I found the NZXT H510 witch I think looks pretty cool (bit more expensive, but much good looking). CPU: Ryzen 5 3600, Im pretty sure about this one. (although I was thinking if a 2600x would enough, but I'm planning to use this PC for many years, so I'll go with latest gen.). PSU: If my calculations were correct a 550W PSU will be far enough for the future (Im planning something like a 1650 or an RX580 later). CoolerMaster MVE Brone 550W. RAM (2x8 GB): Here is my first issue, I have no idea what I need, I don't know if there is a noticabe difference (what's even the difference?) between CL 14, 15, 16 and 2400Mhz, 2666Mhz, 3000Mhz, 3200Mhz. And finally the thing I'm the most unsure about: I don't want to do any overclocking, I just want it to be reliable. Most of these boards have an M version which is the Micro-ITX version, but slightly cheaper. Thank your for reading it trough, and thank you for helping me to choose. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:26 PM PST I am currently planning my first build right now and am having trouble choosing a case. I am currently looking at the H710 and H510 from NZXT. (Here I'd like to point out I haven't researched a lot into other case companies so if you have any suggestions outside of NZXT I'd be welcome to them.) Here's my dilemma. My build has a Noctua CPU cooler that is 165mm tall and the specs of the H510 say that it supports a CPU cooler of "up to 165mm". So would the cooler fit in the H510? I got this information from the NZXT website. Oh and also for those who are wondering the specific cooler is the Noctua NH-D15. [link] [comments]
Corsair k95 rgb platinum usb passthrough problem. Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:25 PM PST So I just got the corsair k95 becuase everyone gave it such high reviews and its like $100 off. So far I really like it but I'm having a problem with the usb passthrough. I was told that if I plug the keyboard usb into a usb 3.1 that the usb passthrough would work, but its not working. Any advice would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]
What are motherboards even? (Video Editing) Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:15 PM PST Hey guys, I am currently working on a PC Build (video editing/gaming/streaming). So far I have decided on the following: BUDGET: $3500
I've gotten pretty far I know. I am looking at MBs next and I honestly am not sure what it is I am comparing. I was curious if someone could help me understand the importance of Ram/Wattage/etc. I will be gaming/streaming but I am mostly wanting to maximize this pc to improve post production render speeds while video editing 4k/3D. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]
What NON-COMPONENT parts should I buy to build a PC (such as tools, anti-static mat, etc)? Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:07 PM PST Title. I'm a first-time builder. I've got all my parts ordered and on the way. I've got a couple of screwdriver kits and an anti-static wristband already. Anything else I should order before I build 2 AMD PCs to make my assembly process easier? Anything you guys consider a "must-have" for building? EDIT: Should probably mention that one of the PCs is being built entirely from new parts, and the other is being built mostly using parts a friend very generously gave me (those parts were all used together in a previous system; all I need to provide is the case, PSU, and storage). In other words, one of the systems is all-new parts, the other is mostly used parts. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Mar 2020 01:03 PM PST I currently have two gtx 1080 founders edition cards, and was approached by someone selling a single rtx 2080 super founders edition card. Is this a good trade? His rtx 2080 super for both of my gtx 1080s? [link] [comments] |
