This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Why is mATX (for gamers) and itx (for basic usage) not the dominant form factor over ATX given that almost every user in those categories will never make use of the advantages provided by the ATX form factor at this point in time?

Not trying to be a jerk or a troll, it's something that has crossed my mind a few times and I would love to hear your opinions.

Treasure Hunt: help me find my childhood pc case

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 06:29 AM PDT

wondering if you could help me out on this. I've been looking to retrieve a computer case that I had back in 2008. My very first serious computer in fact, built by some family member. I really loved the case, but never managed to find it again online. Said family member doesn't remember the case name sadly.

Here are as many infos as I can remember: - ATX Sized - Exterior frame was black, interior was gray (not black like newer cases, back then the case internals were gray in colour) - PSU on top (I think?) - Front has a swivel door (like Fractal Design Define series) that covers the dvd bays. This door was sort of gray and had a black trim around it. - Right under said cover there's a power button (sort of triangular) - and on the two sides one of the best features - it had two of those huge leds that looked like a pair of eyes. if I recall they were glowing red, but I'm not really sure. - at the very bottom there was a small tray that held front i/o (usb and audio), this tray had a little door as well - it had plastic feet on the bottom that swiveled (kind of like old thermaltake cases) - the side panel had NO window - the side panel had a HANDLE for opening and it had a LOCK with a key

Overall it didn't look completely crazy or gamer-y, aside from the huge front lights it looked lime a pretty normal average pc.

I've drawn a bad reference from what I can remember in paint. https://i.imgur.com/sja2YtC.png On the image its missing the tiny front i/o tray and the swivel feet.

I've been looking for this case for 8 years now, I really wanna find it again and build myself a rig in it because nostalgia.

I don't expect this to be from a big brand, probably it was some chinese thing, but still it would be cool to find it again. It was a nice case.

Even if you don't know what I'm talking about please upvote this so more people can see. Thank you.

Building a PC as a graduation gift. AMD or Nvidia?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 08:00 AM PDT

My brother graduates in May and I'm having a tough time deciding between AMD and Nvidia. For example. The 5600xt is a great value card but the drivers might still be terrible. The 2060 is stable but doesn't provide as much value as the AMD counterpart.

I'm looking to spend between 300-400 on the GPU. Targeting 60+ FPS on modern titles at 1080p. I might buy him a 1080p 144htz monitor

I know timing isn't great with RDNA2 and Ampere potentially around the corner, but he's graduating in May not October.

Trying to stay away from used hardware since I want him to have all brand new parts.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

First Build - Gaming, Editing, and Streaming at a decent price - Worth it?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 12:48 PM PDT

I am an experienced pc user but I've never saved up enough or wanted to enough to put together my own. I've decided to push ahead! Below is my draft parts list. I am trying to keep it around the $800 mark and would love some feedback on the list I've put together so far. As stated in the title this will be a build centered on being a multipurpose machine that won't break the bank. I would appreciate advice on whether or not this build will be worth it in the long run and how these components will work together. Thanks!

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 - $174.99

    Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M DS3H WIFI Micro ATX AM4 - $88.98

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB OC - $238.98

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 - $77.99

    Storage: Western Digital Blue 500 GB M.2-2280 SSD - $64.99 and a Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM HDD - $39.99

    PSU: EVGA BR 600 W 80+ - $55.98

Case: Fractal Design Focus G ATX Mid Tower - $67.98

$1000 budget, 1080p gaming and streaming with monitor

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 10:15 AM PDT

Building a PC for my cousins birthday. Wanting to get him a system that can stream and play comfortably at 1080p. Need a decent monitor as well, 1080p, at least 120hz and low refresh is always nice.

Currently looking into the Ryzen 5 2600, 6c 12t; Nvidia RTX 2060 or AMD rx5600xt/5700. Wanted to get him at least 240gb of SSD storage and maybe another 1-2tb of HDD storage.

This build does NOT need to be pretty at all. Cheap case with good airflow and performance is all that matter. Thank you for any assistance! Keeping the budget at or under $1000 is required.

    First Build Suggestions

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 01:07 PM PDT

I have put together my first build on pcpartpicker.com and I am hoping to get some feedback! Just want to see what thoughts are on what I put together before I start buying some of the components.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XJXQhg

    Notes:

-Looking for suggestions on some monitors, I like the ASUS VG249Q but might want something a little cheaper. I think I will get just one monitor to start, hopefully add a second a little later.

-Newegg.com has a bundle for the motherboard and cpu so I am planning to use that. https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.3955445

-I know I could save some money on a couple other things like the cooling and ram, but I chose those because, they look awesome.

Any feedback would be great, Thanks!

    New GPU underperforming?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 09:07 AM PDT

So I had an RX580 Before, and recently got a GTX 1070.

I've found that it runs the same if not worse than the RX580.

    I have I7 4770k, 16gb ram running on a 120hz monitor.

I used DDU and fresh installed the driver's myself from Nvidia website.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated thank you.

Favourite would be the Aerocool Cylon Mini as in here:

Been looking at some builds with it on youtube, but I just can't imagine it has sufficient air flow.

    System is gonna be

    B450m Pro4 2600 or 1600 AF RX580 or 1060/1070

Other considerations that I'd need advice on:

    MasterBox NR400

    Kolink Stronghold

    MasterBox Q300L

    Phanteks Eclipse P300

    Or any other recommendations?

Key questions on my build before buying parts

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 02:28 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PHVKk6

I'm about to buy the parts to my first PC and had a few questions/concerns I hope some of you could help me answer. Overall I feel pretty good about this part list (linked above) but since this is my first build there could be something I'm missing so if you see an oversight I would appreciate that kind of feedback as well (even if I didn't explicitly ask about it below).

    • Probably my biggest concern is the PSU. Currently, I have a compatibility note saying that my motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector that my PSU lacks. Even if the PC runs, which it seems like it will, is the power I'm going to be missing going to be an issue in the future? I wasn't planning on overclocking my PC but I'm not sure if this is going to affect other aspects of my build. I'll mainly be using this for gaming, editing, and streaming.

    • Is this mid-tower case too small for a first time builder? I feel this is a silly question but my hands are on the larger side and my fingers aren't very nimble so will I be making the building process more difficult for myself by not going with a full tower? I would prefer a mid-tower (mainly for weight and aesthetics) but if I'm just making things harder for myself then a larger case is fine.

    • Lastly, with the outbreak of COVID 19, should I expect significant delays with the delivery of my parts? Should I prioritize ordering with a certain merchant to avoid those delays? I live in the U.S. so anyone in the area with experience ordering items during this outbreak could help me understand how long I should expect to wait for my parts to be delivered.

I know this was pretty long-winded but I appreciate any answers and feedback on my build. Been wanting to build my own PC for years now and I'm really excited to be this close to doing it. Thanks for reading.

Fortnite. Minecraft. Roblox are probably the most intense games they'll be playing.

I will buying and building 2 of these.

I don't know how I feel about this build. Probably going to be sticking with Microcenter and not ordering online.

Question: Which PSU should I use?

    First build feedback

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 10:32 AM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LNXQhg

So like the title says, this is my first build. I'm a software engineer, so this computer will be used largely for work-related things (running multiple IDE instances simultaneously, plus other programs/tools, hosting a large web-app locally), as well as gaming (prioritizing resolution and settings over fps since i'm accustomed to console-level fps, so 4k at 45fps with ultra settings is honestly acceptable to me), plus some recreational Photoshop use.

My goal budget is under $2000, preferably as close to $1500 as I can go without making much in the way of compromises, since this machine needs to be very capable and very versatile.

Not listed in the partpicker is that the mobo and cpu are bundled for $580 (includes gamepass for free), the cooler is $49 on amazon, and the case should be around $95-110 if it goes back in stock (i'm currently seeing it listed at $110 used or $135 new on amazon). So assuming I find the lancool case at $110, that brings the total to $1883.93 before tax unless I fudged up the calculation.

Any and all feedback is welcome, and questions/criticisms are encouraged. I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing, but I've done a good amount of research to come to this build plan. And any suggestions for an aesthetically similar case would be greatly appreciated, since the lancool-ii is out of stock and unless I buy it used (which I'd rather not), I either have to wait or drop $135 on it, which is excessive since the case is by far not ideal (it just looks cool and has some nice features).

    Edit: Updated list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LWXw8M

I changed the psu and storage, 250 more GBs for $10 less and a way more reputable power supply for $20 more.

Best upgrade from an RX 580 at 1080p 144/240hz?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 02:17 PM PDT

So I have an XFX RX 580 that I've been using for a year and a half. The problem is at this point open world games and FPS like battlefield 2 have pretty poor performance when a lot is happening on screen. It's super loud on any game more intensive than league of legends and running a bit hotter lately.

I switched to a 5700 XT in hopes to get use of my 240 hz monitor but I got hit with the black screening issues and also bad performance at 1080p so I sold it. Looking for help on an upgrade where I can hit 100-144 hz consistently on 1080p. Feel like the 2070s might be overkill so I was thinking a card like 2060s, 2070, 1660ti etc. any thoughts on which one to choose? Thanks!

Came across some cery cheap used hardware,i5 4590,8 gb ddr3 1600mhz,GTX 1060 3gb,is it good for 1080p 60fps gaming on modest settings?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 06:41 AM PDT

My Phenom II 955,gtx 650ti rig is mad outdated so i wanted to buy something cheap to get back into gaming. I didn't play anything for like 4-5 years and i'm wondering if this rig in the title could push games like Fallout 4,GTA V,Doom on like medium-high settings with fps not dropping below 60 most of the time. Will this Haswell i5 be a bottleneck?

    3200 gigs of 3600mhz ram

all my drivers are up to date.

    Mounting HDD without Tray?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 02:03 PM PDT

My case came without a 3.5 inch tray so I ended up buying a two pack of supposed 3.5 inch trays except it's a bit too small width wise. I also thought it might be the hard drive (Hitachi) so I bought another brand (Seagate Barracuda) but it just confirmed that the tray is the issue.

Im looking into ordering another tray but is it safe if I just mount the HDD to the case without a tray by screwing it into the mount or no?
